What an incredibly beautiful place. We went here to attend a seminar for seniors about scammers…read more I can't give much info about the care, costs or accommodations Because we were not there for that. Not quite ready for that lifestyle yet. What I can say is that everyone was very friendly, the building was beautiful and very clean. What I did not like was that the outside area was very cramped and claustrophobic to me. Besides the Assisted Living building there were rows of apartment buildings for seniors. Just too much in a small space. If I needed to live in an Assisted Living place I would check this one out (although they did say it was full) Once inside, I liked it very much.

My father has been living at Aston Gardens in Sun City Center for 6 or 7 years now. When he first…read moremoved, he was not keen on the idea and you might say we dragged him there kicking and screaming. Now he calls me up all the time to tell me how much he loves living there and how glad he is that I found him such a nice place! Aston Gardens is a Senior Independent Living Community. There are many singles but also couples. Apartments range in size from 687 sq ft apartment with one bedroom and 1 bath, to 1525 sq ft 2 bedroom 2 bath with formal dining room and a den. All apartments have a full kitchen, laundry, storage unit, and a porch. My dad chose a two bedroom unit with 1.5 baths which was perfect for him. He has enough room, but it is not too big for him either. He has one room set up as an exercise room / office, and uses the smaller bedroom for sleeping. It is a nice bright upscale apartment with a screened in porch. When my Dad first moved in he was able to still drive his golf cart and there are parking spaces where you can plug in and keep your golf cart covered for a reasonable monthly fee. In case you are not familiar with Sun City Center Florida, they have special lanes all over town just for golf carts. You can get around town with just a golf cart, so seniors can have more independence without having to drive a car. Golf carts do not require a license to drive and they also do not require the expense of insurance. Besides the apartment at Aston Gardens, your rent includes housekeeping once a week. They also change your sheets and wash your towels. Aston Gardens provides meals for residents that are also included in the rent and available in the dining room. We were invited to have lunch and dinner with a few residents to try it out. At the time my father moved in they were offering a special of one month free. Do not be afraid to negotiate on price or moving expenses! One of the things I liked about Aston Gardens is that he had buttons and pull cords in his apartment in case he needed help. Also he had to check in once a day or they would check on him! The rent includes rides if needed and there are many activities to choose from. The complex is on beautiful grounds that look more like a resort than a retirement community. The grounds are surrounded by a golf course and include an outdoor swimming pool. If you find that you need extra help you can get it in your apartment. So far my Dad does not need it, but it is nice to know it is there. He does take advantage of the barber shop and sometimes he needs help with writing something out to send in the mail. Extra help in a residents apartment is an extra expense, but the staff at Aston Gardens can help you arrange it. I am so glad that we found Aston Gardens for my Dad. It has really improved his quality of life! Photo Credit and for more information: www.astongardens.com/senior_living/Sun_City_Center_FL/zip_33573/aston_gardens/4474

I will not even give this place a rating because it is so low…read more Not only are they short staffed, one or two of the aid staff are totally lazy and could care less about the residents they are supposed to take care of. To boot management doesn't care! In the memory care unit, they serve a lot of chicken breasts on-the-bone as lunch and dinner meals There are no knives (butter as with a normal place setting). The reidents look at the meal in the dish as there is no way to cut it into edible pieces. The chicken is usually covered with a sauce or gravy and they can not even pick it up. Many leave the table without eating! Mgm't has seen it, and still does nothing. The aids sit there and see this without helping the residents to eat. ADF would be a more suitable title. That said, with any facility you must be present often and you must continue to advocate for your relative's needs. The communication with doctors and nurses who see the residents regularly is done through an online portal. The medical staff is responsive and always on top of everything. As to cleanliness, I have never ever seen a bug anywhere and they do their best with any 'odors' which can occur from time to time in any facility which cares for residents of this age and incapacity. One star off for the staffing levels, they do emphasize they're not a 1:1 facility which I understand. However, this heightens the risk to residents in general, especially if they are a fall risk. This situation is tough on families and they do offer regular support group meetings for relatives.

The management is never anywhere to be found and doesn't address needs or concerns promptly. The facility is short staffed and the residents do not seem happy whenever we visit our family there. At night time they only lock the front door leaving the back and side doors wide open and unsupervised. They have cameras in certain areas of the facility but they do not work making them a useless excuse for safety measures. If you are wanting to be sure your family is in safe space I do not recommend this facility.

They either had the answer or were quick to follow-up. Any time they noticed something out of the ordinary or potentially needed my attention, they proactively reached out with clear and helpful information. When my father had a need, they would typically help him figure things out rather than ask me to take care of it. The doctors, nurses, and therapy staff were phenomenal - knowing their watchful and caring eyes were looking after my father gave me great comfort. The facilities and rooms are nice, although there were some significant maintenance issues (water, climate control) while we were there. I understand there may have been some staffing changes recently. The maintenance director recently reached out to me through the center director to explain what kind of remote to purchase for my father's television. It seemed like he was knowledgeable and that he took ownership of helping my father with his TV issue. The location of the Crossings is excellent with groceries and restaraunts nearby and a new hospital and medical facilities practically across the street. The one downside that I heard from my father and several other residents was that the food was not good. I ate there once with my father and agreed it was not particularly good. Staff are very accessible throughout the Crossings - I met briefly with the chef and believe he is invested in improving the experience. However, food continues to be the most significant weakness I have seen at the Crossings. Food is important, but the safety and well-being of your loved one is paramount. In my opinion, with the current leadership team and staff in place, you can be confident that your loved one is safe and well cared for. I am thankful for everything they did for my father.

Protocol is to contact us to notify where he is taken. About 11:30 am I received a call from my father that he was taken by ambulance to the local hospital. I contacted Aston Gardens and spoke to Bill. The security person missed contacting us. Information was passed on to another person to write a report and call us. Today is 26 Nov 2023 at 10:30 am and no one has contacted us. My father has been a resident for over six years. When he moved there management was more caring and this place was wonderful to live at. Budgets have been cut thus shortcuts in many departments including staff, weekly apt cleaning (he lives in a 2 bedroom 2 bath with a 45 minute limit to clean and wash sheets), food quality is mediocre, no hot breakfast except oatmeal. Recently the health department shut the dining room and during the hurricane no transformer so all the residents lost whatever food they had. It is disappointing that my father and other residents have to put up with this. 11:53 am

My impressions that follow are based on about 15 days of participating in some of the daily activities, meeting dozens of residents and generally eating two meals a day in the main dinning room. Also as a baseline, I live in retirement community (CCRC) which is fairly similar to the living style of Aston Gardens. On my very first visit in February, 2013 at my first breakfast meal, I was introduced to 5-6 men by my friend and we joined their table. After almost two hours at the table, I walked away thinking that I cannot remember the last time I have enjoyed myself so much with new friends. Most of all, they made me feel very welcome to Aston Gardens and all went out of their way to speak to me individually. During my 5 day visit, I met many more residents, visited some in their apartments, some in the pool, some in golf carts and lots on the sidewalk and hallways. Because of the very diverse population, it seemed I was always bumping into folks that I had something in common with and all seemed willing to share their backgrounds. I returned in early August, 2013 and was warmly received by those that I met earlier in the year. I had the opportunity during all my visits to see the Assisted Care facility since my friend's spouse is a resident in this separate building. My impression was the Assisted Care service is excellent. You will never forget the handsome dog who will often meet you at the front entrance. My most recent visit this week, February 28, 2014 is no different than my past experience. I feel very much a part of Aston Gardens and look forward to many more visits. On a special note is that I was able to attend a monthly resident meeting after a specially prepared breakfast that was held by the Director of Aston Gardens At The Courtyards. There were nearly 200 in attendance. Toward the end of the meeting, the residents were asked if they had any questions, complains, suggestions and etc. I was very impressed with the constructive remarks by residents but most of all, I hardly heard any complaints. It seemed to me that this group was very satisfied with the management of Aston a gardens. If I did not have 5 children and 10 grandchildren in the Ohio area, I would pack my bags and become a resident immediately here at Aston Gardens.
