Dos amigos is a small, neighborhood spot directly next to the Braddock rd metro. It has a nice outdoor patio, and the service was fast and excellent. The drinks were also very large and good. I'm not sure if they offer a happy hour, but the drink prices are reasonable even at full price. The food was good and generous portion sizes. I have absolutely no idea which Dos Amigos the other glowing yelpers visited, but it couldn't have been this one. Absolutely bland food, terrible service... No way this place lasts more than another year. We went at 6:30 PM on a Monday and the place was deserted. You'd think the lack of patrons would ensure prompt service, but the clueless waiter would disappear for 20 minutes at a time while our appetizer plates piled up on the table and the glasses screamed out for a refill. Where in the world was he? It was like a south-of-the-border Where's Waldo. And the food. It wasn't bad, but totally bland and void of any creativity or something to set it apart from every other joint claiming to serve genuine Tex-Mex. If you have a simple palate and don't expect much then give this place a try, but if you're after truly excellent Mexican food then you're better off elsewhere. Hasta la vista. read more

Delicious, fairly priced, hearty Tex-Mex food. I ate here once pre-pandemic times and their food and service were both excellent. Their drinks hit the spot too! I'm choosing to not dine in during the pandemic but I did take takeout a few days ago - and their food was just as good as I remembered! It was ready exactly on time (maybe a few minutes early!) and was hot and waiting for us when we got there. I ordered the enchiladas with chorizo and burrito with chicken al carbone with rice and black beans. They were both delicious! The take out order also included a complimentary side of fresh tortilla chips and salsa. I hope to be able to eat there again after COVID isn't an issue anymore. My husband and I have been coming to this restaurant for several years, and we love it. The food is always good and consistent. Never a complaint about the food. I always get the tacos and they are great. Today I decided to write a review after probably a 100 visits to this restaurant because in addition to having great mexican food I found out today how honest the staff is. Last night we had dinner here and I hooked my Gucci purse onto the back of my chair and went home without it. Today around 3 PM I realized I left my bag at the restaurant. I've seen this place quite a bit from the Braddock Rd., Metro station and wanted to give them a try so I did. Of course I picked a day that it was 92° out but I elected to sit outside, so I had the nice outdoor seating area to myself. It was a little early, 4:15 PM and Jose came out to greet me and take my order. I ordered a house margarita on the rocks with salt. I wanted chicken enchiladas with red sauce but it wasn't on the menu (green sauce was), so when I asked my server he said he would make it for me, no problem. Within seven minutes my food had arrived, and the server introduced himself as Jose. We began chatting and he stated that his father owned the place and he was the manager. Really a nice guy and enjoyed talking with him. He came out several more times to make sure I had what I needed which, of course, was another margarita! I had the black beans along with my dinner. Both the beans and the rice were great, also came guacamole. Jose definitely made me feel welcome there and wanted. Seafood soup is so good I cannot explain. Perfect "Mariscada"! Not too creamy and the taste is subtle and perfect. I've had this soup in other Mex restaurants, but this one here was the best. We pasted by this restaurant and didn't think much of it but once we came in and stopped in we were sat in less than a min on a Saturday night. I'm so bummed. We just moved into the area and wanted to find "our spot" and this was just around the corner. The first few times we went everything was great -- the nachos are AMAZING and so are the margaritas. But then my SO ordered the lamb fajitas off the specials menu. These fajitas gave him severe food poisoning for two days to the point where he was so weak he almost couldn't move and he couldn't even keep water down. We were leaving on vacation two days after we ate at Dos Amigos and he almost couldn't even make the flight. Everything else at Dos Amigos was good so if you want to take a gamble, go for it. During the pandemic, we got delivery, and the order was consistently wrong (especially leaving out tortillas with fajitas and when complaining asking us to come get them), and the queso seemed watered down. The bartender was friendly and attentive, so we decided to order and eat there, we could package the rest to go if it took a long time. I was impressed with the veggie enchiladas. I was crushing on the idea of a walkable Mexican wonderland, where I could happily procure south of the border delicacies, load up on margs, stumble home, possibly vomiting on the GW middle school football field as I returned to my quasi-suburban homestead, heels in hand. The waitress, while a bit slow, was very kind. But you just couldn't find the right rhythm. I thought I could look past the salsa - thin, watery with chunks of onion and what might have been a tomato in a past life. The spice, naturally, was absent. Nothing remotely resembling a jalapeno had been anywhere near this bowl. The chips, they were so close to being good, but were just a tiny bit off. A bit too thick, clutching to each other like kittens in a box in a rain storm, they just were sad. My enchiladas were ok. Not warm, not cold, but in that sad grey temperature you typically find food that has been sitting out all night. The cheese was yellow. To me, this matters and disappoints. The guac was good, but for the price should have included gold sprinkles, or more than a thimble full. My son did like the sour cream, so there's that. Came here for breakfast/brunch because I wanted Tex/Mex breakfast dishes and was tired of the other Tex/Mex places in old town. The complementary chips and salsa are on point. Both are fresh and tasty. I got the huevos rancheros for an entree. The flavors and components were there but it didn't seem to click. Sitting at the bar, you have a ringside view of the kitchen, which buzzed with activity, though still not quite a well oiled machine. To the food: it's good. It's in the same league as Los Tios, with similar dishes and preparations. I've tried the the Tacos and enchiladas, and satisfied with each. I'll agree with others regarding the salsa...it tastes good, but it's too watery. I liked the chips- crispy and freshly cooked. Margaritas were good too and quick refills of sodas. After another enjoyable trip on the Metro (when your train brakes several times every 15 feet, you just pray that you won't have to deboard at the next station), i got to the bus stop to find that it had just left, so 15 minutes to the next bus. So I decided that I would try this place. It is across the street from the Braddock Road Metro station, so it is convenient to commuters. It is really a small space, with less than 20 tables. There is also a bar. Now, in the DMV, "Mexican" food seems to fall into one of three categories: Tex-Mex, Salvadoran or American Mex. This one falls into the latter. That's not to say it is bad, but don't expect "authentic." That said, the food I ordered was tasty. Chips were fresh and toasty. Salsa was more pico de gallo than sauce. I ordered the tacos al pastor plate with black beans and rice. Black beans are a nice option, in that they are normally much more flavorful, as was in this case. The pork in the tacos was soaked in too much ancho sauce for my taste. It tasted more like Chinese barbecue pork than Mexican street food that I am used to. But I can see how it would appeal the American taste. One thing that surprised me was that my tacos came with no limes, a staple with al pastor. But the meat portions in all three tacos was plentiful, and limes were brought on request. Price including iced tea and tip was $21. A friend of mine and her partner witnessed a lesbian couple share a kiss and the owner went over to their table and asked them to stop. It is not as if they were making out. My friend left her dinner and told the owner that while she was a regular, she would absolutely not be back. His reaction to her comment was that "this is a family restaurant." To which she pointed out she and her partner are a family. For an alternative, go to Los Tios on Mt. Vernon Ave., where gays are welcomed. The place was a bit small, but that's typical of the area. There's a little parking on the side and in the garage area but most of them were full. Sometimes people park in the metro parking lot. All of the food was delicious and it came out quickly. None of us were disappointed. They had the thin chips with no salt on it. The salsa was the one with chunky tomatoes and onions and thin liquid. It was very mild, not spicy. Their is only one bathroom near the bar, but it was clean. It was super busy and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. There was a lot of people at the bar area and they played sports on the TV. It was pretty decently priced. The waiter was nice, but didn't refill the drinks. I stopped in with some time to kill before meeting hubby and the metro and was very pleasantly surprised. The house margarita on HH was $4, a decent size and better than I expected because my bar tender was knowledable enough to cut the mix with lime juice making the taste smoother. The chips are warm but as others have mentioned the salsa is more pico de gao (sp) style. HOWEVER, if you happen to score a side of their ceviche green spicy salsa, it rivals el centros habanero sauce, which if you know me, is saying a lot. Its spicy and flavorful and amazing. They should call this FAIL-Mex. My Texan friends would slap "Tex-Mex" off the menu if they came here. For shame. I only bothered to come here because I a) needed enchiladas BAD and Taqueria Poblano is closed on Tuesdays (dear god, WHY ON A TUESDAY???!!!), and b) my backup enchilada-making supplies were depleted. We have a back-up cheese quesadilla (what I had really wanted was a cheese enchilada, which was not on the menu). That is hard to screw up, as it is literally cheese melted into a tortilla. Well, Ill be damned. Screwed up a quesadilla. It was rubbery and full of clearly processed cheese (I guess, in fairness, Texans are a fan of the processed foods). Oh and of course also cold. Okay, last resort. Chips and salsa. You REALLY can't screw that up! Have you ever tasted bad salsa? Me neither...until then. AYFKM???!!! That salsa was pico de gallo sitting in water and straight up chili powder. It was not edible. Who puts chili powder in salsa?? That's what actual CHILES are for. If you can't make your own salsa, then why not just BUY some, as there is literally an endless variety. Also, the chips, while fresh, were the greasiest I have ever seen. The establishment has changed ownership since it first opened up. I can only attest to my experience with the current ownership. I've been to quite a few places, including chains, and haven't had great experiences at many of them. This is a family owned local restaurant and I wasn't expecting much from it. I was pleasantly surprised as the food here is amazing and well worth it. They seem to be using fresh ingredients and the chips and salsa are to die for. I keep craving them until the next time I'm there. I've tried almost everything on the menu and haven't been disappointing yet. They have specials which are also good and have a happy hour with a nice beer selection. The place is always packed when I go there and I wish them the best and that it stays that way. Overall: Basic, affordable Mexican food in a casual atmosphere. Food: Nothing is really outside the box incredible -- but that also wasn't what I was looking for at this venture.
