I'm sorry that i hadn't shared this review sooner as I've now made 3 trips to my favorite Peruvian restaurant in NoVA. Huascaran is located in a small strip mall at the intersection of Mt. Vernon Avenue and Braddock Road (next to the Food Star International Market). If your only exposure to Peruvian food is charbroiled chicken (which can be awesome) you really don't know what you're missing. The menu is big with a wide range of Peruvian specialities mixed in with more traditional Latin and typical American food. While most of the staff are Spanish only speakers, for those with limited Espanol, they are happy to get one of their more English fluent colleagues to help decipher and suggest options. As you might know, I am a true sucker for a great tamale, and they have them here. Chicken, cheese, pork are all regularly on the menu. And yes, I loved it, as it was accompanied by a small side of red onions, tomatoes and Jalapeno slices. This was a great start to what was coming next. On the Specials Board were two other intriguing options. The Aquadito soup is sort of a Peruvian version of chicken and rice soup. The base is chicken, rice and veggies, but the Peruvian version is outstanding with a puree of cilantro, chile peppers, onions, garlic and lime juice. Oh my! For our entree we also harnessed the power of the Specials Board for the Sudado Pollo. This is a perfectly cooked, falling off the bone chicken leg and placed over a large bed of lentils served with a side of rice. With all of this great and delicious food, i did not leave hungry, and I certainly had wonderful flavors in my mind (and mouth) to satiate me throughout the rest of the day!

Probably the best ceviche I've ever had. Love this authentic spot. Will definitely be back.

New location has parking and is a bit larger and brighter with the windows. Food is still good. Service is still a bit slow but you can flag people down pretty easily. I like the breakfast plate and ceviche. Pollo saltado was pretty good too but a bit salty.

Huascaran is located in Del Ray and is a casual family owned Peruvian restaurant that serves a variety of Central and South American dishes. There was plenty of street parking available. You get a piece of complimentary (warm) bread with butter. We got the pupusa with pork and cheese to start and it was one of the best Pupusas I've had in the DMV area. The sauce from the Loma Saltado was flavorful and the steak pieces were super tender. The Sopa de Mariscos (seafood soup) was such a steal! There is so many pieces of shrimp, fish, squid, and a full crab. Lots of people ordered their ceviche and they serve breakfast plates all day. Huascaran serves huge portions at an affordable price. Don't be fooled by the unassuming exterior. It is definitely a neighborhood gem!

I had to think over whether I wanted to post this or not as I'd selfishly like to keep this hidden gem for myself, but alas, the fine people that run this place deserve all the praise. Top notch Peruvian food. I don't think there is one comparable within a 20 mile radius.

Food was good, rich in flavor. The spicy sauce was delicious. Not too overwhelming. The service provided was a tad bit slow, but still friendly and professional. The atmosphere was welcoming.

No frills little spot right across from the Birchmere that was pretty great. From the outside, I had my doubts, but inside it was a family run Peruvian restaurantwith lots of good options. I had mixed ceviche which was good and my kids had the lomo saltado (one had chicken and the other beef) and they both loved it. This place isn't fancy, but it's also not expensive. I'd recommend this spot to anyone looking for really good food at a great price.

They have been their for 25 years and getting better with age. Traditional dishes have been updated the fresh and brightly colored vegetables with just the right amount of seasonings. We got one of each and shared around, everything was perfect and surprisingly the fish dishes were the groups favorite. Overall a great experience!!

This review is based on the service, food quality, and overall experience. For reference I've ordered: ceviche mixto, arroz chaufa de mariscos, and the sopa de marisos. Service: I've come to this restaurant multiple times and this place is pretty busy! Normally there is one server and one helper. The server is always helpful and patient. She will answer any questions you have and recommend things off the menu. Only down side- when the restaurant is packed you do not get as much service. For example, it might take 10 minutes for her to refill your drink, or you might have to ask her. They need more hands during peak hours. 4/5 Food: This restaurant is majority Peruvian food. I am Peruvian so I feel like I can give you a pretty good opinion of the dishes they serve. The ceviche here is excellent. It is always fresh when I visit and it is a great portion to share. The arroz chaufa de mariscos is good. I would say that it doesn't taste very Peruvian so it is prepared a bit different than what I am used to. They give you plenty of seafood and a good variety which is nice. This portion is also huge! Finally, the sopa de mariscos was good also, This is a very large bowl so it is enough for two people to share! As you can probably tell by everything that I order, I love seafood and this is a great and filling soup to have if you enjoy seafood as well. 4/5 Experience is always good! This is a home-style restaurant with TV's always playing soccer or Peruvian news. This is a good place to come and try Peruvian food, the prices are very reasonable. This place is small so you might have to wait for a table, but I doubt you will wait too long. They menu is full of variety and they have wonderful lunch deals during the week. 5/5 I would recommend this location for authentic Peruvian food. This is a gem to me since I live 10 minutes away and my other favorite Peruvian restaurants are in Maryland. For the portion and price, I say you can't beat it!

Yummy! As others have remarked, this is a no-frills, hole-in-the wall destination. Servers were attentive, but it definitely helps if you know some Spanish. We had the Aji de Gallina, Arroz Chaufa de Mariscos, and Lomo Saltado. All were solid dishes with good portion sizes. The Arroz Chaufa had a very good amount of calamari, fish, and other seafood. The Aji de Gallina and Lomo Saltado were also very good (although I've had better). We finished off our meal with warm donuts - delicious!

In town for a meeting. There are no Peruvian restaurants in my home town so was excited to see this one. Fantastic casual atmosphere and delicious ceviche mixto. Would definitely recommend.

sexiness on a plate. beef, cilantro, beans, rice in a stew. I forgot the name.

He was in the mood for Lahmacun (sounds like Lahamajoun) super thin, crispy pizza topped with a mixture of minced meat with peppers, tomato, herbs, and spices. More fine, light, and delicate than the typical American thin pizza. The service, drinks, and food were beyond stellar in Narman. We felt like the only customers there and were waited on by many staff. The highlight of the day there was their pizza and their beverage presentation and flavors. We came on a weekday night and were the only people there in the end. My husband was impressed at how upscale the restaurant was and it was the finest Turkish restaurant he ever visited. He said it was similar to the hotel dining place he lived at in Turkey. This was our first restaurant in downtown Alexandria and one of our best experiences in Alexandria. The Lahmacun was the finest Turkish pizza my husband ever had. He ordered three of them! Each pizza was served on a large wood board with extra toppings on the side like lemon wedges, cilantro, and onions. They are so fine and thin that you can roll them up to eat. We had to put some of the last pizza aside for take out. I ate the takeout piece and was very impressed how delicious it was after being in the fridge overnight & re-heated. I loved the flavors of the Lahmacun and I don't even care for pizza that much. It is my most preferred pizza in my life ever next to the Crazy Ex in The Thirsty Goat in Clarksville, Tennessee. I ordered a Turkish dish with a rich and ancient history, Hunkar Begendi, or "Sultan's Delight." It dates back several centuries, and it was prepared for the sultans and high-ranking officials, and was served during special occasions and celebrations. The Hunkar Begendi had lamb and velvet soft eggplant with spices. I ordered it with a side of rice. It was very delicious and unique. Yet the Lahmacun despite its simplicity stole the show and cost 1/3 of the price of the Hunkar Begendi. For my beverage, I ordered The Elma. It has a stunning presentation in a smoke filled glass box. The Elma is a beverage with Bourbon, Peach liquor, vanilla maple, Apple butter,Lemon juice, and Apple cider. You have to watch the videos of how it is presented at the table. At the end of our dinner, they played happy birthday and surprised my husband with an ice cream and pumpkin dessert with a candle. So wonderful & heartfelt. It was a fascinating and flavorful dish. The pumpkin tasted like sweet potato & was different. This is a must see place for Turkish cuisine and the finest restaurant service. Prices are low to fair for such high quality food and service. Five Stars.

The place can get quite busy so I would highly recommend making a reservation first. We ordered some cocktails which all tasted amazing, I enjoyed the espresso martini the most. Our table ordered the baked oysters and tuna tartare to start. The oysters were seriously so fricking good, I wanted to order another round! The tuna tarate was refreshing and tasted really good as well. I highly recommend ordering the fish curry or their scallop entree. My wife and I arrived around 1:20 p.m. on a Thursday. The lunch crowd was still going strong, which only reinforced that we had picked a popular spot. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill almost immediately. When we walked in, there was no hostess to be found. After waiting about four minutes, she finally appeared and offered us a choice between a small table in the corner or one by the bar. Given how busy the restaurant was, we took the table by the bar. About seven minutes later, someone finally came by to offer us water and explained that our server was busy, but she would help us in the meantime. No problem. We ordered the Avo Goddess Salad and asked that it be split so we could share it. A few minutes later, our server arrived, introduced herself, and we let her know we had already ordered the salad and were ready to place our lunch orders. She was very helpful in guiding my wife toward the Old Bay Shrimp Burger. I was excited to order the Shrimp and Grits until I learned it contained Andouille sausage and, according to our server, couldn't be prepared without it. Since the restaurant highlights that everything is made from scratch, that surprised me. I ended up ordering the Ahi Tuna Salad instead. So far, so good. Then came the frustration. We spent the next 20 minutes slowly picking at our salad, growing increasingly hungry and confused. You know something is wrong when guests who were seated after you begin receiving their meals before you. Finally, at 2:10 p.m., our food arrived: my Ahi Tuna Salad and a Pulled Lamb Sandwich for my wife. Except my wife had ordered the Shrimp Burger. When we pointed out the mistake to what was now our third server, she quickly assured us it would be corrected. A few minutes later, our original server returned and took full responsibility. She explained that the lamb and shrimp items are next to each other in the POS system and she accidentally selected the wrong item. She assured us the Shrimp Burger would be out in two minutes and suggested we enjoy the fries that came with the lamb sandwich while we waited. Unfortunately, another ten minutes passed before the burger finally arrived. Here's where things became truly disappointing: the top bun was still cold--almost frozen. My wife ended up removing it entirely and eating the sandwich with just the bottom bun. At best, the Shrimp Burger was decent, but certainly not worth the wait and frustration. As for my Ahi Tuna Salad, it felt like something I could easily make at home, especially considering the $25 price tag. I'm also not entirely convinced the tuna was particularly fresh. I can't bring myself to give Matt and Tony's one star because the atmosphere is genuinely cool and inviting. So I settled on two stars--mostly for how I felt before the experience unraveled. And listen, I get it. Mistakes happen. We're all human. But as someone who eats out frequently, here's one piece of advice: when a restaurant makes a significant mistake with a customer's order, consider taking that item off the bill. Sometimes that gesture is the only reason a guest decides to come back.

All of the hip young girls in high school recommended this place to me and my friends and lets just say, they have never been more wrong. My girls and I went this weekend for a birthday brunch. I wanted a crepe, but when I saw it was 17 DOLLARS to slap some Nutella and strawberries on a piece of crepe is outrageous. I ordered a "Continental Breakfast," which, with tax and tip, cost me $30 DOLLARS. I wish you could have seen the look on my face when they gave me a plate of rabbit food. All 6 of us looked at the plate and laughed. Seriously, my 5 year old neice can eat 3 times as much of that in one sitting. So, in what world would that be enough food for a grown woman? My friend then went on to order the French toast for a grand total of $36 DOLLARS. Mind you, there was only one piece of toast, and the Inside was raw and soggy. Tasted like eating wet, soaked toilet paper. On top of the overpriced food and small portions, our "server" came to our table for a total of ONE SINGULAR TIME. My friend had also ordered a Chai Latte. Surprise, Surprise! It never came, and they still charged her for it. I think the nice man who brought us our food could see the look on our faces when we received our food, because he then brought us a free side of French fries. It is a huge problem when the french fries were the only sufficient thing I put in my mouth at this restaurant. I please, genuinely beg all of you to NOT waste your money. I promise there is anywhere else where you can get a crepe for double the size and half the cost. Once we left, we went down to Call Your Mother, the Jewish Deli, to get more food, as all of us left with our tummies still rumbling. Mind you, a full bagel sandwich and coffee cost HALF THE PRICE of one meal at Fontaine. Horrible. Mind you, it is 2 days later, and I am still thinking about this. I fully created a Yelp account just so I could leave a review. I think I would have a better experience eating an IHOP Continental breakfast than whatever I put in my mouth at this restaurant. Not worth the hype at all. Save your hard-earned cash and be a big baller elsewhere!
