My wife and I were in the mood for fajitas and were looking for a different option to our usual Tex Mex choices. After reading some reviews, we decided to give Dos Hermanos a try. They emphasized fajitas as being a featured item on their extensive menu, and reviews seemed quite positive, so hey...why not give it a try? We arrived around 4 and sat at the bar. We were the only customers at the time which seemed a little odd since it was a Friday and a very pleasant day outside. We were greeted by the bartender/server and given complimentary chips and salsa, both of which were quite nice. We also had basic salted rim jalapeno margaritas, which were ok. Not bad, not outstanding, they were poured out of a large plastic jug. We then opted to split the steak and shrimp fajitas with the usual accompaniment of guacamole, sour cream, cheese, tomatoes, refried beans and rice. For $28.99, this was a huge disappointment. 3 shrimp and 5 strips of thin beef with fried onions and a few peppers. The shrimp was actually tasty and very well seasoned but 3 shrimp? Please. The steak was difficult to evaluate since the pieces were so tiny. The refried beans, rice etc were fine, but the dish was overall a total disappointment and a terrible value for the price. There was only one other party of people that came in during the entire time we were at the restaurant which I feel is telling. I loved Dos Hermanos! First, the salsa is absolutely to die for. It's a mixture of salsa, and what seems like pureed pico de gallo. Either way, it's amazing. The case was also good, it's made with yellow cheese, so it's not quite my favorite because I prefer the white cheese, but it was pretty good. A little thick. We dined on a Wednesday evening, very few people there but everyone was very nice, it's a nice place, and the food was very good. Dieting (alas) I had the Dos Hermanos salad with grilled chicken. Impressive. Plenty of chicken. My date had the Lechoncito Al Horno. Good but lots of onions, so it's a little on the acidic and .. onion side. Ever since Dos Hermanos opened this is a weekly visit for us. The food is alway consistent, fresh, and reasonably priced. The fajitas, taco salad, and shrimp/fish tacos are all great. The only thing to avoid is the queso, which we find to have an odd texture. They have a great happy hour during the week 5-7 with $2 off beers and margarita discounts. Also, when the weather is nice out, the patio seating is great. The service here is friendly and they make you feel at home. We were pretty aggravated as we had a hungry and restless 3 year old. The waiter apologized and rushed our child's food. There was no offer to comp anything to make it right. This is true Tex Mex and I'm here for it! Having lived in the Southwest for over a decade, we are always on the lookout for amazing Mexican, New Mexican, and Tex Mex food. When we went to pick our order up, we were surprised we had plenty of food with the price that we paid. Definitely so much more than what you would expect with DC prices.
