Yesterday, Texas was under amber alerts for thunderstorms and heavy rains. In route from Austin to San Antonio, TX I had to stop to get out of the rain (quite unusual for Texas). I stopped at Dos Gatos for coffee and also picked up a few sweet treats for later (wink, wink!) Dos Gatos, which I believe means two cats, is a shop for "on the go" folks...no inside seating and small space. The shop focuses on fast service, and fresh baked goods, with kolaches baked daily. Dos Gatos has a variety of items such as sweet kolaches with traditional fillings like apricot, poppy seed, strawberry, raspberry, and cream cheese. They have savory kolaches such as sausage and cheese, jalapeño sausage, chorizo, ham and cheddar, and vegetarian sausage options. The turkey sausage kolache was the standout...sometimes called a pig in the blanket. One downside of the sweet kolaches is they are rather small. I forget how small they were until my hubby mentioned also. A surprise bonus was their full espresso bar, which includes lattes, cappuccinos, mochas, chai, cold brew, etc. Pricing was at the low end of the spectrum. Sent Mr R to the original store near opening time on a Sunday morning, but had backup choices on hand because you always need to here. Just in case your favorite is still baking or sold out before you got here. Got my heart's desire of a cherry kolache and a ham and swiss for breakfast. Great kolache spot in San Marcos, Texas! There are two locations... The other is by campus... The bread here is a little different from the kolaches I've had in Houston... It seems more like a type of dinner bun than a pastry... It's still delicious! Ordered an assortment of kolaches and had a cup of black coffee. Good stuff! Kolaches are amazing, even when you buy more than you can eat, let them sit on your kitchen counter for a couple of days, then finish them off at 2am because you woke up from a sound sleep absolutely ravenous. Oh man worth a stop! Parking is a bit of a pain, and its a bit out of the way if just passing through, but worth it. We tried 6 different types of savory kolaches. Each was above average to great. the breading was soft and had a touch of sweetness. My favorite was the hatch sausage. The bacon and cheese with Jalapeno was good, but it was above average spicy. My least favorite was the pizza kolache it was good flavor, but very greasy. There is no inside seating, but there is a few tables outside on the sidewalk. We make kolache dough at home as a family with a matriarch who has been making kolaches for 60 years. Speaking as someone who knows what it takes to make a good kolache, I will say that the dough was decent - a bit soggy, but not bad. The sausages inside the pigs-in-a-blanket "sausage kolaches" were underwhelming. Too small and a bit scrawny. I bought 2 dozen and spent nearly $80. That's insanely expensive. Your overhead costs must be outrageous to need to sell sausage kolaches to $40/dozen. read more

I know this economy sucks, but you have to pick between keeping quality and raising costs or keeping the same price and gutting quality. I can't justify going anymore when the dough tastes weird, has a less pleasant texture, and the filling keeps getting smaller. Unfortunate. Easily one of the best places in Texas to grab some kolaches with their sausage, jalapeño, and cheese being my favorite. They're the only place nearby that I've found that uses quality sausage instead of hot dogs. I keep meaning to try their fruit and cream cheese kolaches as well, but every time I buy a dozen and bring them to work they're all gone before I get a chance. I am not a kolache expert, but I am something of an expert in doughnuts, and kolaches are like the special Texas-Czech version of donuts. I've had a few kolaches before my visit here, and these were head and shoulders above the rest. Soft and fluffy but not gummy or mushy, which a good balance of filling to dough. Poppy seed is the super traditional flavor, but there is a variety of sweet options and you just can't go wrong with any of them. The savory options add some more Texas flavors, and they're like a breakfast sandwich wrapped up in an easy to eat ball. Some of them are a bit greasy, but that's attributable to the breakfast meats inside. The coffee is great too, but that's not why you're here. The location near the University means this place does a pretty consistent business through the morning. read more

I have been in twice. Once was a very busy line out the door and the other was later in the day and no line. There is no clear and present menu so you have to walk up to see what is available. The coffee menu is tucked behind the counter or facing the other direction from where you order. Customer service is lacking. I felt very rushed both times even though there was no line the second time. Zero chance to see what was available and make a decision and constantly "is that all"?. I love to support small and alway hope the small businesses move a different pace than fast food (I know it's a double edge sword everyone wants it NOW). But when no one is in the store it just hits different. If there was a menu or something available off to the side so there is time to make a decision maybe it wouldn't be so bad. The appeal for not going into places is not being rushed to order from a million options you can barely see. I came into the store on LBJ the other day heading to school, and while the food and staff were great, I almost had to leave without buying anything because of the temperature in the store. It also didn't help that I was walking to the university in 96° weather but the inside of the store was like walking into a sauna. It was basically the same temperature inside than it was outside. I honestly just feel bad for the people working there, I don't know how they can stand it for that long when I could barley stay in there for a few minutes! This has got to be one of my favorite kolache spot. They always have a variety of fresh kolaches to choose from. From sweet to savory to meaty and vegetarian, there is a a kolache waiting for you! I also love how this place sells "Day Old" kolaches in a batch. You can never go wrong with this! They still taste delicious and all it takes is some heating up. Service here is also pretty fast and friendly. They also have a small menu of coffees, so if you ever need an ice latte to go with your kolache. By all means go for it! Yea this food one of them ones man, the kolaches are insane, the cinnamon rolls got my mouth watering, and i specifically crave the pep and swiss kolache at least 3 times a week. The staff here are amazing, they always treat you right and know what's going on. If you're from texas you know the vibe of every mom and pop donut shop, and this place has a same feeling. We were in town for a short visit and this is the only business we made a point to visit multiple times. Their kolaches were all solid choices, though we didn't care for the one with the egg as much. Their seasonal danish Fall Spice was our favorite! It was like an incredibly well seasoned apple pie on a pillowy danish, superb! It's so fun to visit a new town/state and discover things that don't exist where you live. For me, that was a kolache. And they're everywhere here! We were informed that Dos Gatos had some of the best so we stopped in to grab a few before they closed one day. They had SO MANY options to choose from. It was a little overwhelming. I got two, a savory and a sweet to enjoy right then and in hindsight I wish I would have gotten a few more to try later in the day. The poppyseed one was interesting. I'm not really sure what I was expecting, but the consistency of the crunchy poppyseeds kind of threw me off even though it had great flavor. And the sausage mustard and kraut one was super delicious, salty, and tangy. I really enjoyed the flaky kolache itself and it reminded me of a danish or a pig in a Blanket depending on if you got savory or sweet. I'm glad I got to try it and I think it's a great and affordable quick snack, lunch, or breakfast! read more

Dos gatos has the best kolaches I've ever had in the entire Austin / San Marcos metroplex. I try a kolache place almost every time I discover one, and at this point, I must have tried 25 + kolache places. Nothing even comes close to the quality of Dos Gatos. They have the right roll / sausage ratio- a sweet, moist roll- and a big, non-breakfast sausage (i.e. an actual sausage) with a nice skin and a satisfying "pop" when you bite it. You're gonna' wanna' get the sausage, cheese, jalapeño- the other stuff is good too, but this is of course the holy grail of kolaches, and what I'm talking about here. No one in the game is showing this much love and attention to the quality of every ingredient in the kolache, and making sure they all work together well. You really just have to go try it.
