This market is located across the street from my work. It's wonderful! There are hot options such as street tacos, ribs, tamales.. cold foods such as pico, guacamole and a fresh veggie market, as well as beans, breads etc. I had beef tacos w /nopales, beef tamale and rice and beans. So we found ourselves in Ypsilanti from NE Ohio (OK not gonna lie, we were going to the excellent OZ dispensary), and we spotted Dos Hermanos. Now generally in my experience, little restaurants attached to Mexican markets have had the best food, so we tried it. To say that Dos Hermanos was outstanding would be a bit of an understatement. I don't have a broad experience of its menu, (since we only ordered two things) but I went for the Torta Cubano. This is a sandwich I've seen on menus in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Austin, Texas, but I was always afraid of to actually order it. Chorizo, ham, egg, chicken cutlet, lettuce, tomato, avocado, pickled chili, mayo, AND a hot dog. It always sounded like a saturated fat fever dream. When I walked into Dos Hermanos, however it seemed to call to me from the menu board. Finally, I did it. To cut to the chase, it was amazing! Perfectly balanced flavors, not too much of anything, and crusty, fluffy Torta bread that is the whole reason for such a sandwich to exist. The charred Serrano pepper on the side was an ideal accompaniment. The sandwich was so big I could only eat half and even later it remained delicious, if just a bit soggy. My wife had the veggie burrito with black beans and roasted peppers, and though lacking a hot dog, it was also wonderful. Perfectly cooked rice, flavorful black beans, rich roasted multi-colored peppers and if you add their sublime habanero salsa, this is a great dish, which frankly I'm only finishing tonight. I should also add that the staff was awesome - friendly, informative, attentive and they didn't make me feel bad for my terrible Spanish pronunciations. I'm not sure when we're going to get back to Ypsilanti, but if you're in the area you should definitely put a stop at Dos Hermanos on your agenda. . read more

Came here for the first time based on word of mouth thru a friend. Had the carnitas tacos, cheese and jalapeno tamale with beans and rice. Great deal overall. Pretty good to ok tasting. Nice staff in the market. It's part of the grocery store, so we ate outside in the car. Worth the try. read more

A great little haunt in Ypsi. Stop in and you will be sure to find something you want to sample. A nice little grocery shopping trip, Dos Hermanos will help you with anything food related you are looking for. They have great meat, with a full service meat counter that has some very tasty chorizo available, just for starters. If you are feeling lazy, you can buy precooked items to go by the pound like carnitas, bbq beef, lamb, goat (their goat here is not tough or stringy but fall off the bone type fabulous), assorted tamales, consomme and birria. This can help you *make* a delicious meal in a flash. You can get good ceviche here too, happy. Plenty of fresh veggies and fruits can be found to round out a meal. Salsas (I like the verde) and guac are convenient. Nice tortillas. You can stock up on everything here from a huge variety of beans to cilantro, fresh and dried peppers, even a good assortment of sugar cane pop (Jarritos and Pepsi too). Lots of spices. Bargain prices! Its so nice to be working nearby and have a little haven to help for the time crunches that come from working too much lately. Dos Hermanos is a delightful lifesaver. I've lived only a block away for the past 5 yrs. why didn't I come in this place sooner??? Looks and location can be deceiving I know better than to judge a book by its cover but this cover looks kind of rough. Glad I ventured in because I found a gem in the rough. The only way you can get a smile and "thank you" is if you're Hispanic. Yesterday I walked in and I noticed the cashier greeting and thanking all of her customers but when it was my turn it was a different story. I lost it when she threw my bag which contained two glass bottles on the counter like why not just sit it up? We were in the area and I've been craving tacos! Walking in here made me feel like I was back in So. Cal. It is a small market but they had everything I wanted! Fresh meat, small produce section, cooked food, and your essential Mexican goods. We picked up some carne asada, ceviche, pico de gallo, chicharones, and a couple tamales. I am a happy camper! Cool place to shop. As soon as I came in the doors, I was hypnotized by the soft glow of the pastry case, with all those pastel-colored sweet breads. There's a full-service meat counter and all the meat looked fresh. Not the same cuts you would expect at Meijer, but that's okay. They have tripe, but I didn't see any chicken. Some of the produce looked a little tired, especially the fruit stored in the open. But hardier vegetables like potatoes looked good, and so did the vegetables stored in the cooler. Lots of Mexican-made products on the shelves. Jarritos sodas in the cooler. Dos Hermanos brings a lot of character to the neighborhood. read more

I visit Dos Hermanos probably weekly either to stock up on fresh limes (usually 10/$1) and avocados. The tortillas from El Milagro are amazing but spoil fast so make sure to keep them refrigerated and share them with a friend or two. The meat is extremely fresh. I've purchased lots of chorizo in the past as well as five-pounders of pork to slow-cook and shred for dishes. It's all VERY AFFORDABLE! I've walked out with three bags of groceries for under $30. Many meal options for a low cost. I love to stock up on spices (very fresh, located against the wall as you come in past the pastry case) and cans of beans, cubes of stock, flours and fruits and vegetables for juicing or eating. The best part is on weekends when they offer fresh tamales and tacos. Tamales are $1 for one and tacos are $1 for two. They are both fantastic compared to any other Mexican food offered in the area. I've stopped eating at La Fiesta and instead just come here on the weekend for my fix. The service is good, too. If you are confused about something there is usually always someone who is enthusiastic and willing to help you sort it out. read more

This place is great! It is well stocked and has everything you need for most Mexican recipes. They have freshly rendered lard! The spanish word is "manteca", which will unlock the beauty of unhydrogenated pork fat to anyone who asks. I also was able to get epazote here (although it was pretty limp, they pulled out the crate for me when I asked for it), limes are cheap as mentioned by Riki L. (10 for $1), and they have several brands of tortillas. There is also a pretty large selection of fish, meat, and fresh cheese at meat counter. Great selection of products. Lousy bombed out parking lot. If you (a) know what you want and (b) speak Spanish (which this gringo does) this store may be for you. It is for me. Uneven floor surfaces and at times a rugged terrain and narrow aisles clogged with unshelved products make it almost impossible for anyone on crutches or a walker as I now find myself. When I was last in there, another Anglo couple came to me and asked me (!!!) where the breakfast cereal was. I had no idea, so I asked the cashier (once she concluded her conversation with a friend) in Spanish who was only too glad to answer me, but not the couple. Absent or low functioning English at best. Rough looking fruits and withered desiccated produce. The 'dead' epazote bundle for 2 bucks---really? The Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area is blessed with a great many small ethnic groceries, but I am most familiar with the Asian ones. It's nice to find an ethnic market dedicated to Mexican and other Latin food goods. There are a few other small Latino markets, but Dos Hermanos is one of the bigger ones, offering pastries and bread baked on site and a large butcher counter. They also offer rows and rows of canned and dried goods and several freezer and refrigerator cases of ethnic foods. The selection of produce, including lots of kinds of chiles, was also fabulous. From the street, it looks like street parking only, but there is actually a private lot around back, and a sign on the side of the building that fronts Michigan Ave. will direct you to enter in the back by that parking lot. read more

I grew up in Ypsi. and have driven past this place so many times. I always intended to stop in but never got around to it, that is until this summer. After I ran into a vender in Depot Town and asked him about where he got his mortar and pestle, he said Dos Hermanos. Right away I drove up there. My only regret is that I hadn't done it sooner. I ordered the tamales, two chicken and two pork. My first impression was, 'these taste like grandmas.' Seriously I've never had them as good as my grandmothers but they do in fact rank up there with the best I've had. The store itself is pretty large with all sorts of things from food to cleaning supplies. I even got that mortar and pestle for under 20 bucks. Since that first visit I've been back several times but have not tried anything other than the tamales, they are just so good I can't help but get them on each visit. read more

Came out for tacos with my girlfriend and we ended up buying some spices and assorted items. So glad I tried this place. I was a little intimated by the previous post saying you might have trouble if you don't speak Spanish . I had zero issues. Went Friday around 1pm everyone was friendly and spoke English. Unassuming place you can see the meat being cut up next to where they cook the tacos . Pork Carnitas and beef Barbacoa tacos awesome at a $1.60 each and they give a ton of meat. This place is as good as some of the best taco places in Mexican town. I would recommend park in the back vs the busy front street. Will definitely add this as a regular to go place. read more

I stopped going because of the rude service. The employees ...and owners...are more interested in pursuing the minutiae of their various tasks behind the deli counter or register than they are serving you courteously or with friendliness. They'll eventually begrudgingly you assist you with something...but only after a long annoying wait. One gets the sensation that they play favorites (wonder why? As the store is dirty, ill kempt, and smelly) so if they dont know you, expect a bizarrely cold reception. I gave them a lot of business when I lived in town, but no longer. They are just too cold & unfriendly and it's alot of work for a gringo to get courtueous service here, esp for minor things like getting meat from the counter. read more

20150124 I always like going to this market to check out what is on sale and to see if it has added any tasty new hot sauces. The key reason we go is for the food--the yummy, flavorful delicious aromatic food. If you are not into hot and spicy then this is the place for you. They put the hot and spicy into their salsa/add on sauces. I especially like the ones made with tomatillos. My money is better spent else where. With them having multiple comments saying the same thing I'm saying they must not care. I will not be back. I strongly recommend this market over other Latino markets that I've visited in the Ann Arbor area. The selection here is good (for example, many, many different types of beans & salsas). The produce is generally fresh, and I like their selection of cheeses, meats, and other groceries. On the weekends, as well, I go to get tacos & tamales. I'd recommend the beef tacos, though, over the pork. The pork tacos the last time around were a little dry. The tamales are also great -- I've gotten the meat and vegetarian and both were very tasty and a great bargain at $1 each. read more

This is why I love Yelp. If not for seeing the reviews for this place, I would have never stopped. There isn't much more to say about this place that hasn't been said. I spent $20, got 2 full bags of groceries and enough goods to make several meals and snacks. I got some tortillas, some steak fajita mix, beef, produce, dried peppers, homemade salsa and guacamole. I couldn't wait to try the salsa and guacamole, and popped those open as soon as I got home. They were so tasty, that I would drive 25 minutes just to get those again. The fajita mix with the sliced peppers, onions, meat and marinade is wonderful, and its cheap enough to pick up to serve if I'm feeling lazy and don't want to make dinner from scratch. Lets face it, who doesn't want to save some time? The employees were wonderful, and beyond helpful. I was greeted as soon as I came in, they left me alone to wander around, and when I was trying to decided between several items, a man came over to see if he could help. The lady working behind the meat counter was especially helpful since I didn't know what I was looking for and I was trying to describe what I was trying to make. The tacos that were coming out of their center food cart looked excellent. I wanted to try them, but had the kids with me. I didn't think that a toddler wandering around with a taco was a good idea, or her eating a taco in the back of my car. Next time I'm going alone, and I'm going to get my grub on. I had promised the kids that if they were good and kept their hands off the store items, that they could pick out a pack of cookies or something on the way out. I don't know what they picked, but they were the best prepackaged cookies ever. The 3 of us ate the 6 cookies by the time we got out of the lot, and turned back onto Michigan. Best tamales around, I recommend the jalapeno and cheese tamales. Good homemade salsas you can by buy the pint. Good bbq chicken and tacos. Good meat counter. Not so fresh produce looks like leftovers from the produce clearing house on Fort St. Great fresh tortillas and mexican bakery shipped in from detroit. Have bought some candies that were stale. How do you describe the awesomeness of this place in words? This is our one-stop shop for all foods Mexican/Chicano/Latino. They have pretty much everything you need, from snacks to soft drinks to spices and cooking ingredients to produce and meats. And of course they have marinated meats that're excellent, and they make their own chorizo. They also have a food counter that serve tacos and tamales, and I prefer the tamales here to another place that people like in a heartbeat. Feel too lazy to make your own pico de gallo? They make their own fresh. And where else do you go around here to find fresh nopales? Price is very reasonable, and people are so friendly. I was happy to hear that a Mexican grocery store was going to open up in Ypsilanti. Usually, I have to drive all the way to Detroit to find the products I am looking for. While the pan de dulce (sweet bread) is not fresh, I like the fact that they offer fresh chorizo in their meat case. Just as a quick update. One thing that I've noticed time and again is that they always have perfectly ripe avocados in the veg section. No need to wait 3 weeks to make that guac while those hard avocados take their sweet time ripening only to go off because you were a day late. Make it right when you crave it. We live in Jackson. We have been to Dos Hermanos in Adrian and in Ypsi. The two main reasons I love this store is the Chorizo and the taco stand. My wife likes the canned goods and the spices. Unfortunately, the owners and staff don't realize how many non-Hispanics are interested in their goods. Many things are not labeled and when they are it's only in Spanish. We like to try new things but we need to know what it is. Fruit? Vegetable? Eat it raw? Cook it? How? In Adrian they told us that they are a smaller store because there aren't that many Mexicans there. What?! What about everybody else in the greater Adrian area?! Anyway, my wife cannot go three months without a road trip to Ypsi with a stop at Whole foods in Ann Arbor. They have beer, too! read more
