Dosa Place is a hidden gem and the exterior looks humble. The owner was friendly, attentive and introduced their signature dishes to us with patience. The options on the menu were various but they ran out of lots of ingredients when we arrived at a late lunch time. We ended up getting their Cheese Dosa with Masala to share and our favorite Indian donut Gulab Jamun as dessert. The dosa was fried crispy and matched with the flavorful Masala sauce. My family was fairly disappointed after tasting what dosa place had to offer. The sambar was not the best- as if they were simply reheating it and adding water when they began running out. To top it off, dosa, the food in the name of the restaurant, did not taste like the dosa we all know and love. The onion rava dosa did not even have onions in it. The area itself was also sketchy. After a mediocre experience dinning at the food trucks near Niagara Falls, we were able to get some delicious authentic South Indian food at Dosa Place. Run by a family, the place was bustling with people and orders well past their closing time during the busy Labor Day long weekend. We got to try their dosas and tamarind rice. The chutney and sambar accompaniments went well with the Masala dosa which we really liked and highly recommend. A decent Dosa place close to Niagara Falls. I come from a South Indian family so I have high standards for dosas (Indian savory crepes). I ordered a paper butter roast dosa. If you are familiar with dosas, you know that paper dosas are these extra thin crispy crepes. The masala (potatoes and peas cooked in Indian spices) came on the side and I also requested spicy powder on the side which I like to mix in with the other accompaniments. Dosa traditionally also comes with Sambar (lentils cooked in a stewy style) which was also provided. I thought the dosa tasted pretty good but they could work a bit on the sambar and masala part. I think it's a good option if you are in the area and are craving some South Indian food. They also gave me a complimentary cup of rasam (spicy soup with Indian spices) which was very nice of them. Hardly any vegetables and no flavor. I thought impossible to have Indian food be flavorless. How??? Well Dosa Place knows how. If you want flavorless dishes with almost no vegetables and lots of curry then this is your place. The dosas were burnt. We brought someone here because the last meal was so good. If it ever had eyes it's not being served here. Almost half of India calls themselves vege. So they have lots of vege options. This is a large space at the end of this plaza nearest to Tops. Far enough away from Tops doors that parking won't be an issue. 10 booths, 6-8 4 tops, 4 2 tops and two larger in the back. Well lit. They ask you to wait to be seated. Presumably because it's busy, which when I was here it was. Mostly with Indians actually, i think that's a good sign. Easy to read takeout menus. I gather this is the same family that had a place on NFB previously. I did not go there so cannot compare. I had a masala dosa. To go. Well wrapped and generous portions, both the filling and the dipping options. This is a spicy dosa but they have much more mild ones too. I really enjoyed mine. I'll be back for another one soon. Have you had a dose of dosa yet? If not try them out! Growing up in India, we had south Indian food quite a lot. Special occasions with a large group of family members always took place at a south Indian restaurant as the food is economical, fast and delicious. South Indian food is quite different from north Indian. It is usually vegetarian, much lighter and spicier than north Indian. Dosa is a large crepe made with a mixture of ground lentils and rice. The batter is allowed to ferment overnight which gives it a slightly tangy, sourdough like taste. It is usually eaten with sambar(a lentil and veggie soup) and coconut chutney. At dosa place they also serve it with a spicy chutney. Ive been to Dosa Place a half a dozen times now and my experience has been mixed. Ive tried several of their dishes. Some things have been really delicious and others just meh. The onion rava dosa(crepe made with semolina) is by far my favorite. I also enjoyed the Mysore masala dosa(regular dosa with a spicy paste spread on the inside.) The paper dosa is ginormous! It is crispier than a regular dosa. The Dosa place special is a good deal, and so is the Thali special. Ive had both and I found the quality of the vadai(fried lentil cakes) and idli(steamed rice cake) not so appealing. They seemed a little tough and stale. The inconsistencies at this restaurant made me deduct some stars. The restaurant is clean except some clutter in the back, going toward the restrooms. I am sure I will return to Dosa Place again, mostly to satisfy my craving for south Indian food. But, now I know what to stick to on the menu. read more

We came across this place when we visited the falls. One of the best dosa restaurant ever and that's coming from a South Indian. The taste was on spot and food was authentic. Nothing beats the Rasam (soup), it was hands down one of the best I have ever had. The place was clean and the staff was super friendly. I was really interested in trying Dosa's and especially having the experience of eating with my hands, a child's dream come true! The menu comes with lots of options, some meals extremely similar to each other I was unable to tell the difference. Anyways we ordered the P2 (combination plate of yogurt, few curries, and rice) and also the Spicy Masala Dosa. Both we super delicious, I loved dipping the bread to taste the different spices from each curry! Once we finished our bread and rice, we still had remaining curry left over so we ordered another dosa! The Onion Rava Dosa, this time the "bread" was much thinner and crisper. Is this the most decorated place with the best atmosphere for an Indian restaurant.. nope. Is it cheap? hell yeah. is the food good? absolutely. My parents love this place, the staff members are all really friendly and the place get cleaned fast. Indian restaurants are notorious for taking time to clear a table for the next customers, but not the Dosa Place. Really we come here for the dosas, I do recommend dining in as they are much more fresh and crispy. They are very generous with their coconut chutney and sambar sides that accompany the dosa but, if its not enough you can always get extra for $1.25. Take out might get a little soggy but still tastes good. I love the sambar, I actually drink it like soup. The apps are a bit expensive, so I haven't really tried them. I normally buy them at the Indian store and just get entrees from here. Definitely give it a try! read more

I've been saving my visit to Dosa Place until my parents came to town. Though Gujarati, we have always loved a good dosa. We were all incredibly excited to try this place out and were really hoping it would deliver. This spot hits that perfect medium between dine in and takeout which brings you a pretty causal atmosphere. There wasn't another soul in there on a Thursday night during dinner time, so we had the manager's undivided attention. I'm sure this had nothing to do with our fellow brownness either. He served us some warm water and let us deliberate. The menu is pretty wide ranging from your standard dosas, standard South Indian fare, some Punjabi options, and of course some mango beverages and coffee to polish it off. A lot more of an exhaustive menu than I imagined. I went with a mysore masala dosa (a spicy dosa with potato and onion stir fry) to get the full experience. It came out looking real good and had a sambar that was chunky and looked great. The dosa was hot and crispy, but the sambar didn't have much kick. Once I got to the masala, I immediately stopped. It was evident that the vegetables in the masala were reheated/old. I was seriously bummed and just finished off the dosa while leaving the masala to the side. I really really wanted to like this place. It had all of the factors leading in and frankly I was concerned that I would have a skewed perspective when I inevitably wrote this. Unfortunately it's a pretty sub par South Indian spot in Buffalo. It will satisfy the itch but not cure the craving. read more

I've been looking forward to trying Dosa Place for a while, since I'm a vegetarian and I like Indian food. Not all Indian restaurants have dosas, so that was an bonus. My husband and I ordered an assorted appetizer platter to start. I got a utthappam with mixed vegetables and cheese, which the menu described as an Indian-style pizza. My husband had the paper dosa with masala. It took a long time for our appetizers to appear, though our waitress apologized for the delay when she brought it from the kitchen. A few of the appetizers were familiar to us, the baji and the pakoda, which are both battered and fried vegetables (I think other restaurants call pakoda "pakora" instead). The others on the platter were new to us, iddly (a steamed cake made from lentils and rice), vadai (fried lentil donut), and bonda (fried potato balls). While I liked that we got to try some appetizers we've never had before, nothing really jumped out as something I'd order again. The platter is pretty large for 2 diners-I'd say it could work as a starter for up to 4 people. I wish I had taken a picture, but we were really hungry by the time the platter arrived. As for our entrees, I've never had utthappam before, but I wish I'd gotten a dosa instead. While dosas are thin and crepe-like, utthappams are more like thick pancakes, with toppings cooked right into the batter. My husband's paper dosa looked beautiful and huge when it arrived at the table. I tried some of it with the masala (spiced potatoes and onion), and it was great. Service seemed rather inconsistent. Besides the long wait for our appetizers, it seemed like the manager/owner was making the rounds to other tables to check in, but didn't stop at our table. We also waited a long time for our bill. We had seen the manager bringing the bill to other tables, so we sat in the booth after our dishes had been cleared, and waited. He eventually came over to ask if we were waiting for something. I was more uncomfortable watching the manager train a new employee during our meal. She seemed very inexperienced, and had to be given instruction on how to do every single thing (e.g., clearing a table's dishes once all the diners had finished eating). But it bugs me when I see managers not treating their staff very nicely in the restaurant/retail industry, because I've been there before. Maybe we were at Dosa Place on an off day. I'll give them another try at some point. But I'll definitely order a dosa next time. read more

My experience with Indian food in Buffalo is minimal. I only know/knew Tandoori. I've had decent food elsewhere however that does not help me indoctrinate my daughter to the pleasures of trying Indian cuisine locally. To expand her taste buds and expectations. Dosa Place popped up as a ROTD. I had never heard of it. Checked and saw that Maria B. had reviewed and liked. Good enough for me. What can I say? Food was outstanding. I ordered off of the menu and my daughter picked up "the bag of goodness". Don't know what I ate but all was fantastic! This stuff is all vegetarian. I don't worry. I'm am not even going to try naming food because I will screw up everything. What I will comment on are the following: Indian crepes. WHOOHOOO!!! Tasty little buggers. Some filled, some not. The Indian version of Tzatziki. Cukes and sour cream. Get the freak out of town! And finally...the special sent home with my kid from the owner. Tapioca Pudding! I love tapioca. Dosa Place is something very unique to the Buffalo landscape. My first experience with Dosa was with Palace of Dosas down at the Taste of Buffalo many years ago. I fell in love with the crispy thin crepe surrounding spiced potatoes there and have enjoyed it ever since. I miss Palace, but Dosa Place is a nice substitute. It's rare to find an all Vegan restaurant in Buffalo. I've eaten here twice. The first time we dined in one of the big booths. Clean and sparse. The owner sits in the dining area most of the time watching over the place. It was a slow night and I remember it taking a bit long to get our food. I'm assuming they have changed that, since this was a couple of years back and they have high ratings. The food was freshly made to order and very tasty. We tried several Dosas and enjoyed them. Butter Dosa was plain, but I think I'm just spoiled by the tasty potatoes. The next visit we went back for take out, thinking that would fix the problem of the long wait for our food, but that was a mistake. Though everything was still nicely spiced, the dosa, it seems, does not travel well. It was very soggy by the time we got home. Oh, well, live and learn. Wanted to try something different that was currently going with a vegetarian cleans we are doing and stopped by this place for dinner. When we walked in it a pretty slow for a Sunday at dinner time. The decor is very simple, clean and the place is brightly lit. We were seated quickly and given time to look over the menu. We had the appetizer platter, Rava Dosai and Masala Dosai. All the food was great. We also tried the mango lassi and it was delicious. The portion sizes were good and very filling. Both our entrees came with Sambhar and Chutneys, both were good.
