I went to Dots yesterday afternoon for an early dinner with my parents. Initially, I thought the prices to be high for a diner. I ordered the ham and cheese melt sandwich. I could only eat half as the sandwich was generously filled with ham, cheese, lettuce and tomatoes. The other half is my lunch for today. My ring slipped off my finger while I was in the diner but I didn't notice it until later. I called the diner and they had it. I drove out early this morning to retrieve it and decided to also pick up breakfast for my family My husband and son had the pancake breakfast. They are huge! My side of grits with my egg was enough for all 3 of us and the toast slices are thick. The side of bacon contains 4 slices. I can honestly say that the prices are due to the generous portions of food so definitely fairly priced. I also appreciate the honesty of the staff in turning my ring in when it was found. read more

Came to the Dot's in Gulfgate with a party of 4 and Angela was our waitress. We ordered two ribeye steaks with eggs and two fried chicken sandwiches. The order took a very long time to come and when it arrived one of the egg and hash brown plates was lukewarm. They also gave us New York strips instead of ribeyes. When we reported it to the manager, Mike, he said they were substituting because they were out of ribeyes. I told him some people don't like New York strips and that information should have been shared in advance. He said nothing and did not offer to make the poor service right. I'm never coming back here. Meant to update a while ago. Pappas made good on this incident by sending me a gift card and apologizing for the service we received. read more

1st time here. Elsa, our waitress was friendly, helpful, and very attentive. I ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs (dispite Nathaniel's on going derogatory review remarks. Had he complained to the manager, they would have corrected the issue. In my opinion, he went overboard with his nasty comments, therefore it's obvious the core of his frustration lies outside the restaurant.) I've had chicken fried steak for decades, so I know good from not, and this was spot on. The batter was light and crispy, eggs, hash browns, and biscuits were all cooked just right, and were delicious. This place being owned by Pappas consistently provides top shelf quality and quantity. I've eaten at many Pappas restaurants for many years and they are all consistent with their quality, service, and cleanliness, which makes them reliable. I will be back, therefore I recommend this place. Oh, and I also very much enjoyed the 70's music and the 70's style setting. read more

A great restaurant I have been going to for over a decade. When friends and I were hungry after college in the late 2000s we would hit up dots. The food had big portions and gave us poor college students more than enough to bring home for later for a second meal. After many years as a customer this has to be the worst time ever. A 20 minute wait on a Thursday night 8:30 , turned into a 40 minute wait watching 18 tables sit unused. The clueless receptionist, stood there and never once talked to a person until they asked for service- she then asked for a name and phone number and told everyone it would be 20 minutes. Still 18 unused tables. Our food came out in a timely manner- everthing was so much smaller and over cooked chicken strips that were tough. We had to get up to try to get any waiters attention to try to get syrup while the pancakes in our order got cold. Again another 20 minute wait. Not a good night of dinner for my family of 6. I guess customer service just isn't a priority any longer. read more

Dot, the king of midnight breakfast. I have yet to find a better place that opens 24 hours and serve MY kind of portion. Each plate is good enough for two, maybe even three with all the sides. I had the Chicken Fried Steak. Huge piece of chicken with crunchy breading. I don't think "drizzle" would be appropriate for how much gravy was showered on it. Probably the only dish I would get from here. The sides are mediocre at best but nice to have a little variety. The feel of Texas is in every direction, from the walls to the complimentary hot, fresh rolls with creamy butter. read more

It's a diner, so they have anything from omelets and pancakes to country fried chicken and mashed potatoes. They daily specials on the website, which is even a better bang for your buck considering their normal prices are already cheap. The interior is consisted of over-sized booths, tables and chairs, and TVs to cater to everyone. As soon as you sit down and order, they'll bring out a basket of assorted breads (cornbread and rolls), which are sooo guiltily delicious. I've only had their omelets, which can be substituted for egg whites even though that is not mentioned in the menu. Did I mention the portion sizes are big here? Ok, so I kept passing this place going on south I-45 and thinking, man when is the perfect time to go here, it's always packed........and for good reason...it's wicked friggin awesome. I'm just going to go into to the food, because who are we kiddin', we don't go to diners to have a light candle lit dinner, we go there to eat guys.....and that you'll do! Grand paw, bring your stretchy pants!!!!! So I got the pork chop special with onions over rice with sides of stuffing and maahed potatoes....Oh I also ordered hashbrowns....why, because it's friggin awesome! Oh by the way, look at the pic, there's actually 2 pork chops under all that gravy........yeaiiiiiih buddy! My girl got a chicken fried steak with sides. To die for. Both of us had boxes. This is such an awesome tasting place. It's fast even when it's packed. And it's the best filling and sobering up food in town. Best part, it's 24/7 guys.....that you can't beat. Im from out of town so decided to try it out. Im a connoisseur of chicken fried steak, so the yelp pics persuaded me naturally. Ordered the CFS with coffee. The coffee was crazy watered down to the point when I put one cream in it it looked like skim milk. The CFS was rubbery and soggy battered. Was not the business! They give you 2 eggs with it, hash browns and biscuits or toast, but wont substitute all those carbs for pancakes. So I had to order a small stack extra. This is why its not a 1 star review. The food was very good and they give you huge portions. My friends and I went randomly and it was such a good choice. They have two menus for you to order from, one is the weekly specials and the other is their every day breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is literally so much to choose from, it took us over 10 minutes of debating to figure out what the each of us were going to try, it's that much. The plates were very heavy and full, everything was delicious and I'd definitely recommend this place to someone who is starving, because they are going to make sure you leave full! Their food is very delicious just about everything I've ever ordered. I've enjoyed eating as a recently. They have changed the method on how they would make their French fries and this is the only thing that I had a problem with. The only time the service is slow is when it's super Duper busy other than that, they are great at serving you. On the inside of the location. it's very comfortable. We decided to give this place another chance? It is still horrible with very poor service. We asked for a table and the hostess did not know what to do and disappeared for ever. Returned with the manager who was just as useless and unfriendly as the hostess. We had to sit at a booth when there were plenty of table available. Our waiter (David)was very rushed and no personality. Wanted to push ranch dressing on us. I ordered thousand island with extra and my wife ordered blue cheese. He brought my with no extra TI. Told my wife they didn't have bleu cheese. He didn't bring crackers and we had to request them and he threw a bunch on the table. Took forever for my wife to get her salad. We received our meals. My CFS tasted like it was fried in old grease and gave me indigestion. I asked for extra gravy and was brought at the end of my meal. He never refilled drinks even they were empty. This used to be my absolute favorite diner in Houston. Recently I visited for the first time since the pandemic to find that the menu has been decimated. They used to have a menu called "Homestyle Cookin'" with daily specials where you pick one entree and three sides. That menu is now completely gone. MANY menu items have been removed, prices are WAY up, and they now CHARGE for the rolls that used to be free. Insane. First off, Jacqueline our waitress was fine. With that said, DOTS now nickle & dimes you. As an occasional patron on the past, bread is no longer offered complimentary. You want bread? A basket of rolls are $2. My chicken fried steak was the smallest its been in years. Kelley's blows both the CFS as well as my pancakes out of the water. My visit was a late weekday lunch with two of my siblings. The inside of the restaurant reminded me of the now defuncted 59 Diners. The menus and prices are kind of like Denny's or IHOP, but the portions were larger. Our server was very helpful for my sister on advising what on the menu was gluten free. The only negative I had was the construction surrounding the restaurant along I-45. The staff is super friendly; they sanitize the booths and tables immediately when the patrons leave. That's so good to see. The manager takes time to come to your table to greet you and make sure everything's OK. The service is prompt and I haven't had a bad meal from them yet. The prices are great for the amount of food they give you. Word to the manager: If anyone tells you to change your decor, DONT! The retro style along with the 80-90's style music is a VIBE.
