For my birthday a few weeks ago, I received a lovely secondhand DSLR Canon from my parents - unfortunately it did not come with a strap or a bag. My out-of-town father suggested I go to a mom-and-pop camera store: "They're everywhere!" I scoffed, "Of course not, those are all out of business, I HAVE to go through Amazon." Then I found Dot Dotson's. Not only did they have a great array of camera straps and bags available, I was able to purchase a strap and bag for a FRACTION of what I would have spent on shipping alone to get them here in any reasonable amount of time. Additionally, the gentleman who helped me not only helped me find a good bag that would fit my camera as well as a strap, he even threaded the strap on my camera for me (a feat I must admit I was not up to). I came into Dot Dotson's today after getting frustrated with Walgreens. I had to get a work visa photo taken with very specific measurements (including one for the size of my head in the photo) and was told that I should bring a ruler to double check the photos, as Japan's immigration is quite picky with what they will accept. I stopped in at Dot Dotson's and despite being pretty busy, the guy who helped me was courteous, knowledgeable, and totally nailed it- my photos turned out to be exactly what I needed, to the millimeter. My Sony digital camera got dropped on vacation and the zoom lens malfunctioned. This had happened once before, when I lived in a different town with no local repair shop, and I had sent it away to a place i found online. That was 100% successful, economical and fast. However, now that we are back in Eugene with the famous Dot Dotsons, I decided to go local first. That was a mistake. I brought the camera in and waited for 15 minutes or so while the person who I was told to talk to, Joanna, argued loudly with what was apparently a collections company on the phone over a disputed bill. After much shouting, she hung up on the caller and finally came to speak with me. She told me she might be able to fix it herself for $10, and thus avoid the $80 "send-away-for-repairs" fee. I agreed to that, and she told me she'd call when it was ready the next day. Next day, no call. I waited a week, no call. Finally I called. "Joanne is out, please call back in a couple days." I wait a couple days, and call back. Joanna says, "uhhh, uhhhh, yeah, uhhh, sure, it's fixed, or let's just say, come in in 30 minutes and it WILL be fixed by the time you get here. it'll be up front" I am suspicious. I make it in the next day. Joanne is again out. The woman at the counter checks the fixed camera shelf. No camera. She wanders around the store vaguely. No camera. I look into the back from my side of the counter and see my camera (which is red) randomly among a bunch of cameras in a light box. I tell her, "there's my camera." She looks confused, gets the camera, tries to find documentation that it's mine, but there isn't any. She brings it out and says brightly, "Well, at least it's fixed!!!" No, no it was not fixed. The zoom was as broken as when I brought it in a week earlier. She says, "well, I'll just take some notes for Joanne and she'll get them when she comes back in." I say, "Joanne has already had the camera a week, and it's still broken. She didn't call me when she was supposed to, she didn't leave it where it was supposed to be, and she didn't fix it. Why would I leave it here?" The woman just said, vaguely,. "well, yeah, sorry...." I took the camera and left. I'm going back online, and I'm definitely not going back to Dot Dotsons. Dot Dotsons is actually only the latest in a series of the so-called Unique Eugene shops I've been to that are distinguished primarily by shitty service. Their motto seems to be: "if we haven't known you since 1978, we don't need to care about you." And they wonder why people don't shop local anymore. read more

I brought them three rolls of film to develop after spending time in South America and they ruined all of it. I've been a customer for three years and I just can't believe how outstandingly negligent the Dot Dotson's staff and specifically, Annette as the developer, was and what that has cost. I went to pick it up to find that one roll of black and white film had been color processed, stripping the film of its exposure, leaving me with a taped up roll of plastic. The next roll was actually color film and when I opened it there were only 10 photos inside. When I asked what happened, I was told that it must have been MY fault, that my camera must have opened and exposed it all. I have a leather case that wraps around the full body of my film camera, so it can't open until I manually remove the leather case and open it myself. I've been shooting film for 8 years, so I feel that I can confidently say I know how to properly load, remove and store film. And, as for the last roll, they said nothing happened to it and just let me walk out of the store. Thankfully, I stopped and checked outside because they were NOT MINE. I was given a package of 50 photos that weren't mine. At this point, they were panicking and couldn't tell me what happened or where they were or anything except that "this sort of thing never happens" and they would call me when they found them. Later I received a call to hear that they never even developed the roll and found it somewhere. I picked up the photos yesterday and they tried to charge me for them. All of the photos were there but there were obvious marks from the printer on over half the photos. Shooting film nowadays is a specialty and it can be expensive. Additionally, these photos weren't just a walk in the park, these were a center piece of a series I worked on in South America for 11 weeks that will never happen again. I trusted Dot Dotson's to care for my work and emotional investment and they really messed up. I understand mistakes happen, but this was a train wreck. read more

After my friend's father passed away, there was a ton of photos and negatives that were unearthed. Having a rather large family, she wanted to get copies to pass around. We went into Dot Dotson's with a bag full of pictures to be scanned onto CDs, not long after his passing, so also in a bit of a foggy haze of emotions as well. They were able to put all the photos onto CDs so that folks can print them as they see fit. The costs are on the higher end of the scale but it was all worth it if you don't have a lot of time to invest scanning or printing your own photos. MIssion: find someone locally to fix my friend's nice Sony camera that started to fall apart in his bag! I got online and looked on Yellow Pages for camera shops, camera repair shops, etc. All of the phone numbers--about 5 of them--were either no longer in service or were to fax machines, etc. The only number that worked was Dot Dotson's! I was actually surprised that the outgoing voicemail message picked up! I left a clear message about needing a local shop to either repair a camera or help arrange services with Sony. I called late Saturday night/early Sunday morning (I do late night computer work.) Early Monday morning, Paul called and left a message on my voicemail, detailing the process on how to get the camera fixed through Sony. It was a genuinely helpful voicemail that he left, with ideas regarding Sony's website, and even a phone number to call. I am very, very impressed with Dot Dotson's and Paul's professionalism, even when the service is not something they do in house! To go out of their way to help a community member achieve their camera/repair goals is highly commendable and really sets the bar way up high! They definitely support digital cameras, although the U of O bookstore seems to be the best place in town for digital prints. That aside, Dot Dotson's is camera heaven. Amazing customer service When we were in Eugene for my son's wedding 6 years ago, we bought a new lens at Dotson. 5.99 years later, it broke. I delighted to find that it had a 6 year guarantee, but despaired of finding a receipt. Annette dropped what she was doing, found our receipt and emailed it to us right away. I'm ranking them four dollar signs because the film was marked up higher than I've ever seen, anywhere(13.50 for Velvia 100F, I typically can pick this up under $10, and if I shopped online you can purchase closer to $7-$8). Super helpful. Went in for some advice on fixing vs. replacing a body, and they ended up doing the fix (which other repairers had told me would be hundreds of dollars) in about 2 minutes, for free.
