True to the dish's name, the sauce definitely has a spicy kick but not too spicy that it overwhelms the taste. It pairs really well with the rice. The egg and cilantro are nice touches to the dish. If the dish were a tad cheaper (priced at $19), I'd be an even bigger fan. But not unreasonable and taste is completely worth it - reminiscent of home cooking or Taiwanese comfort food (Lu rou fan) which is my favorite. I would definitely order again! read more

Total hidden gem! I only stumbled upon this restaurant when driving down a side street after leaving Parker's Table. This is a tiny Vietnamese restaurant tucked along side the Cheshire Hotel. As of March 2021, you need to call your order in and then pick up in about 30 minutes. There is a parking lot in the rear of the building and parking along the street on Clayton. There is a driveway on the side of the building that connects the rear lot with Clayton. If you are on Clayton, you'll be able to see their outdoor patio dining. Call when you arrive in the parking lot for curbside service. I had arrived early so I went to the door. They said they would bring it out and I didn't need to wait inside. Very friendly service! We tried both the DouDou Beef Noodle Soup (beef pho) and the spicy lemongrass beef noodle soup. Both entrees were $16. Since we ordered our food to go, the thinly shaved beef was served raw on top of the noodles. The same container had cilantro and peppers. The lemongrass soup also had green onions as a garnish. Both broths were boiling hot and served in a separate container. When you get home, just add the raw meat to the hot broth. Since the meat is sliced so thinly, it should cook in a matter of seconds. I thought the portion sizes were generous. I couldn't fit the entire portion of broth/meat/noodles into a large cereal bowl, so I had enough leftovers for the next day. My partner was able to eat it all in one sitting. Completely out of the ordinary for me, I didn't order spring rolls (gasp)! The description of the rice rolls was too enticing to pass up: steamed rice rolls filled with ground pork, mushrooms, and onions, topped with steamed pork. Served with 2 containers of sweet and sour dressing on a huge fresh bed of mixed greens. And not wimpy wilted greens, but enough for a salad. Three come to an order for $13. The prices do seem high, but over the phone, I was not given an option to tip. So, in that case, the price was appropriate. read more

Delicious beef noodle soup! My partner tried the spicy lemongrass beef noodle soup and that was also good. We ordered take out on a cold day and the temperature of the soup was still pretty hot. Our first time coming here. It's a quaint, small, family place. Prices are a little higher than other places but the food is fresh and delicious. Really tasty and the owner was so nice and engaged with a personal touch. The menu isn't expansive like a number of Vietnamese places but we tried three of the dishes and all were stellar. The service and the food was excellent. The staff were incredibly accommodating. I could eat anything on their menu and one time I ordered a very delicious spicey ramen bowl and when I was having a hard time dealing with how spicey it was, they immediately brought me Kleenex's and water. This place is a gem! We are visiting St. Louis and staying at The Cheshire. We got to town late, and by the time we checked in and got our luggage to our room the hotel restaurants were already done serving food. We saw there was a Qdoba half a mile up the road and it was a nice night, so we decided to walk. On our way we saw the "Open" sign on, so I walked over but when I pulled on the door it was locked. The owner, Donnal, unlocked the door and said "Come on in!" with a big smile. We were hesitant, because I don't like getting to restaurants when they're about to close, but he reassured us that they were just doing some dishes and watching the game and he'd love to have us. My husband and I both ordered the Spicy Pork Belly. As we waited the owner chatted with us and was very friendly. He told us that he is from Hong Kong and his wife is from Veitnam and the dishes they chose to serve are his favorites. Because of this, their menu has a limited number of items that he said she has perfected, and it shows! The food we were served is not the restaurant style Veitnamese food you get at most places, this food is fresh and tastes like your best friend's mom just served you her favorite dish. I saw that other's mentioned the price being high compared to other restaurants, I think the price is warranted based on the food quality. Gal that waited on us was very sweet and nice but there are only five items on the menu. We ordered the chicken salad which consisted of a microwaved chicken breast with pepper on top and eight few crushed peanuts. There were a few rice noodles and lettuce with a vinegar honey sauce on the side. Chicken breast taste like it came out of the microwave. No spices or other enhancements on it. I had the spicy beef pho and my wife had the regular beef pho. Both were excellent and met my fairly high standards for what it should taste like, even with me taking the meals home and preparing them there. The ingredients were fresh and crisp, the broth was flavorful and those dishes would stand up with many of the significant more expensive Asian/Vietnamese restaurants where I have dined in St. Louis and in Washington DC. The spring rolls that I ordered as an appetizer were fresh and well prepared, without sogginess and they stood up well to the hoisin sauce and minimally spicy pepper sauce. I would definitely come back again and would look forward to trying the pork belly which looks delicious in the photos present on yelp! It is difficult to impress me as a foodie. I was staying at the Cheshire Inn and looking for a nearby restaurant to grab lunch. Yelp directed me to Dou Dou Cafe which is the absolute closest restaurant for lunch, near the hotel... And 10 yards west of the Cheshire Inn! Not only was it the closest, but I have to say it was, perhaps the best option in the local vicinity. I arrived, just as the owner was opening the restaurant. We had a nice conversation about her restaurant and the pride she takes in providing an organic and gluten-free menu. I was in the mood for something light, so she directed me to the beef lettuce wraps. The beef is prepared to be sweet and sour. It was tender and juicy. The lettuce was fresh and crispy and included an assortment of other greens. Despite it being billed as on the "lighter" side, it still filled me up.
