Double Ai is one of the most reliable places in the area when it comes to Asian cuisine. I have been here many times and am yet to be disappointed. My personal favorite is the Ten Ingredient Noodle Soup, which always manages to fill me up. I also recently tried the General tso chicken which was coated in a delicious sauce. One of the worst restaurant experiences I've ever had. Let me start by saying this is no longer a BYOB restaurant, despite giving every impression that it still is. There is no clear notice that they now have a liquor license, yet they charge a $10 corkage fee per bottle--or require one drink per person to waive the fee. This feels misleading from the start. After a long and frustrating discussion with our waitress--who couldn't clearly explain the policy--a man (who never identified himself as a manager or in any official role) came over. Even after more back-and-forth, the policy remained unclear until we were told definitively: one drink per person to waive the cork fee. By that point, we had already purchased a drink. We decided to stay, as we've dined here many times before without issues. Unfortunately, things only got worse. We specifically asked for our appetizers and entrees to be timed separately. Instead, our main courses arrived while we were still halfway through our appetizers. Then came the biggest issue: the beef teriyaki. The meat was inedible--extremely undercooked, with a bloody taste and raw interior. We immediately stopped eating and called the waitress over. She told us, quite confidently, that it was filet mignon. It absolutely was not. We asked to speak again with the same gentleman. When questioned, he immediately contradicted her and said it was not filet mignon--but then admitted he didn't know what cut of meat it actually was. He went to the kitchen and came back still unable to identify it, only saying it was "beef." At that point, offering us ice cream as compensation felt almost insulting. We asked for the dish to be removed from the bill. Instead, the waitress returned with three cups of vanilla ice cream--and the charge for the dish was still on the bill. We paid and left, including a 20% tip for the waitress, as the issues seemed more systemic than entirely her fault. Be advised: this is not a BYOB restaurant anymore, and based on this experience, I would strongly recommend proceeding with caution. read more

I feel so up and down about this place but for TLDR: good food, bottled water, BYO but cork fee, odd bathroom, SLOW service Went for a birthday celebration, reservation at 6:30 table was ready but service took a very long time and we got out at 9. Which sounds like we might've been sticking around but keep in mind - we waited the 30 minutes at our table for someone to take our drink order. Staff seems disinterested in helping tables, and could not be bothered to clear plates when necessary. The experience of having menus in the way while appetizers were served made zero sense, no one cared to take them away. Appetizer plates and the free crispy noodle paper dishes had to be stacked because no one was coming back to take them away. Also, they only offer bottled water no tap, and will charge you for it. This is not advertised or explained, even when wait staff takes your drink order. There is a cork fee of $10 per bottle, but this can be waived if you buy drinks from them. Our waiter was friendly but inattentive. 30 minutes to get water, glasses, or even an ice bucket for the wine is unacceptable. Sushi was good, but for this level of ambiance we were expecting more. Seems the other food options on the menu may be your best bet. Also, one bathroom for the entire restaurant and it was very poorly lit. Large 3 wick candle burning in there seems careless to leave unattended. There were no paper towels when I went. I will say, it was a nice birthday treat they did with ice cream and lava cake! Wayne, NJ - the dishes here are very "greatest hits" of standard Americanized Chinese and Japanese food, with some random Thai thrown in - nothing innovative or authentic - but I really like eating here and have enjoyed most of the entrees I've ordered, which are better than similar fare at restaurants that offer this type of cuisine. To my surprise, the pad Thai is superb! Better than I've had in many Thai restaurants. The noodles have perfect texture, are slightly smoky and not overly sweet. I enjoyed both the beef and chicken versions. The tom kha gai soup is also great. However, the Thai basil chicken, which I asked for "extra spicy," was not basil-y, spicy or Thai flavored - but as long as you're not wedded to authenticity (as I mentioned, the food is tweaked to American palates), it still tastes pretty good. I don't normally order sushi at mixed-Asian cuisine restaurants as they could be hit or miss, but tried a couple of special rolls my friend ordered and they tasted very fresh. The setting in an awesome feature here - the lakefront location with an outdoor deck that's open in warm weather and has a tabletop fire pit. The staff are friendly and service is great, and they're sweet to children. They've thrown in freebies with our orders like complimentary dumplings, sake shots, and ring pops for our kids! The owners are very nice and have a good sense of humor. FYI that they don't offer tap water, only bottle. And it's BYOB. There is a 3% credit card charge, which I see more and more across NJ and everywhere else, especially at family businesses like this one. read more

It's been awhile since we've been here. They now have a liquor license with a nice outdoor bar and the patio was redone. Very nice view of Pompton Lakes. The owner Jeff is really nice ! It was my husband's birthday and he got a complimentary shot and after our dinner they came out with ice cream with a candle and sang Happy Birthday . That was such a nice surprise!! Each roll offered something unique, and the combinations worked well together. However, the gyoza and smoked salmon sushi were underwhelming and not quite up to the same standard. The wait staff was very young and rarely checked in. We were given bottled water (and charged for it) instead of tap, weren't offered small sauce plates for our soy sauce, and chopsticks were never brought to the table. The biggest issue was that my mother-in-law's meal was forgotten not once, but twice, and her second drink never arrived. What was disappointing to see was the stark difference in service--two influencers were filming their experience and received fast, attentive, professional service, while the rest of us did not. I've been following Double Ai on Instagram for a while now and finally got to go last night! I didn't make a reservation so had to wait for outdoor seating but the wait was short and you can hang on the couches near the fire pit. We got the steamed pork dumplings and kani salad (SO good) to start. We shared the King Kong and Happy Holiday rolls. The King Kong roll was excellent. Heads up this place is byob. They charge you for water. Idk why some places do that but I get that bottles are more costly than tap. I'd be perfectly fine drinking tap if it were an option. read more

We tried again and disappointed again. We waited about 30 mins for a table but it was Friday night so it was understandable. We ordered a variety of pups and rolls. But things came to our table randomly. For example some apps and 1 roll. The menu stated one of the apps came with a cucumber salad but when we asked about it we got a response that we didn't understand and were told they would bring us something else. Never happened. Finally had a chance to stop by at Double Ai after all these years of eating across the street on a Friday night and hearing music and people laughing at Double Ai. Came here during the day so there wasn't music playing and there wasn't a massive amount of people. We originally decided to sit outside in their patio area that has a view of the water. However, it was quite sunny and we had babies with us so we decided to sit in doors. Indoors was modern black and had a few decorations. The food itself was typical Chinese. They also had a few Japanese dishes, so which made it Japanese Chinese fusion. The food wasn't anything special, but it was delicious. The service itself was great. We got to meet the owners. They were nice. The restaurant is ran by a son and a mother. The food came on time as expected. All in all, I would go back again. read more

We came here on Sunday around 6pm and got seated right away. It was my husband and I with our two little ones under 5. We ordered edamame & pork gyoza to start - the edamame was yummy but there was a leftover noodle on the bottom of the dish (not sure if it just wasn't washed all the way?) The gyoza were good. For mains, we got the kids House Lo Mein to share which was yummy. For sushi, we got the Princess, Scorpion King, Happy Ending and Bounty rolls along with the Ikura & Tobiko on the side, for my husband. He said the Ikura tasted like it's been out for a while. I really enjoyed the Princess roll but the Scorpion King tasted a little too fishy (and we eat a pretty decent amount of sushi). This place is a great spot if you want to have an outdoor meal. They have a really nice outdoor side patio where you can look at the lake. We went during the fall, and the leaf foliage was beautiful. It looked like a picture out of a painting. We went on a Sunday and arrived around 1240. They seated us, but the kitchen didn't open till one and there was already about four tables set. We didn't mind because we were in no rush and just wanted to enjoy the beautiful day. The place is BYOB while we waited. They gave us some wonton crisp strips With duck sauce. For my meal, I had the shrimp pad Thai I ordered it spicy, but it wasn't spicy at all. There was a good amount with it, and I liked the tofu that was in it. The other person that I went with, had the Ramen with chicken, which looked really good. There was a large amount of chicken in it. Highly recommend this place if you want to eat outside. read more

So many 1 and 2 stars are here for this place, ask yourself why, over the years we gave it low ratings too. Well, we were fools because here we were trying this place again, after some years long after our 2 bad experiences long since past, so now, add on yet another updated review for the Yelp books, now in 2024. Now, the only reason we just went back here recently, was all because we actually thought the place was sold by now, this was assumed based on my seeing an ad for it for sale awhile back and that perhaps it was sold, the place is popular and makes its money, so unfortunately we were close by and hungry and risked another try. Oh my.... Wrong, same deal, food, same manager, who's an owner, so, obviously nobody bought it as we hoped was the case, instead quickly seen was how bad it always was some years ago. This time we left very soon after seating, this after being told a policy is you can have no table water. Huh? New lying thing since Covid? Nickel and dime people instead in this way? Must buy a $2 bottle for 8 oz Poland Spring AND then think we would accept our 2 very cold filling inside egg rolls served to us? Red flags and things simply unacceptable yet people will flock there. When I wanted to leave right after the refuse table water deal, must buy their bottled water? Instead - We order 2 waters, one I opened to drink, other one was not yet. We order 2 egg rolls to start, not yet the main dishes. They brought our egg rolls rather quickly, looked fried dark brown BUT entirely the filling inside for both egg rolls were VERY cold? Huh? Why is because details like this don't matter there AND they fry these right out of the fridge, filling stays cold inside and slightly hot on the exterior? They take them out of a fryer way too fast. These were def. fried in batches earlier in the day, then put in fridge for later dinner service, when it gets busy, this expedites BUT not when YOU hardly fry them long enough to get the insides hot? Also it's not my first rodeo of having an egg roll received this way. It is simple stuff in food service to not do. After this - I just needed to LEAVE - or I would have made much more of these details - we got up from the table and proceed to the cashier up front, paid for the 1 opened bottle of water, the other was unopened. Told the girl upfront in so many words how the place sucks and how it did before, in 2024, nothing has changed. We left and did so, ever so gladly. Stay away, this place is not quality and the details don't matter much with customers only a dollar sign for them. Bye Double Ai and seems nobody wanted to buy the place at 499k yet, apparently the kid/Mom duo still owns it but he's run it for years now. He's no longer a kid but one slick little biz owner who nickel and dimes customers while he keeps on cashing in. This was a very strange experience. Service was extremely slow when it was not very busy. We saw a woman in white greeting customers and tending to the plants and asked her if we could order since we had been waiting a while. She yelled that she "did not work there" and that we would need to ask a server. Later on, she proceeded to ask other customers how they were doing, pouring some wine for other guests. Very, very bizarre. I will say the food was good. I had the prawns with walnuts, which I enjoyed. It was also really nice to be by the lake. The salt and pepper scallops and jalapeño yellow tail appetizer are a must. The warning is that the service is slow. It took almost two hours to get our food. But we were not in a rush so not an issue. I read the review before dining here and others had same issue. Not a place to stop at if you are on a tight schedule. This restaurant has so much potential and I really wanted to like it but it failed in so many ways. Decor/ambiance: Great location, good parking, right on the water, great views. Terrible upkeep, water damage in ceiling, paint chipping off the ceiling. Cleanliness: I feel dirty sitting in the dining room. Servers wipe all the table crumbs onto the floor when they leave. One of our knives was very dirty and looked used. The other knife had a fruit/produce sticker on it. How do you put these dirty utensils out? Doesn't anyone check before they set the table? Service: not good, staff did not seem to care much about the service. Brought my credit card and bill to the wrong table when it literally says the table number on the bill. Staff: They hire a bunch of young and skinny high school girls that don't know what they are doing. I assume the creepy owner thinks hiring these young girls will get more customers to come and dine. I guess people will sacrifice their stomach and taste buds for flirty little high school girls. What a PATHETIC AND GROSS business model! Food: Terrible, I don't understand how anyone says the food is good here. Dumplings: very mediocre and the frozen pre-made variety, definitely not fresh made. Boneless spareribs: came out kind of cold, probably been sitting there for a while. It was dry and tasteless. Kamikaze roll: the soft shell crab was mostly batter and very rubbery, wasn't newly fried, probably premade and sitting in kitchen for a long time. Salmon avocado roll: this was ok. Hard to mess this up, literally salmon and avocado. Tuna avocado roll: terrible, tuna was rubbery sitting out in room temperature for way too long. Sushi combo: not good, again, sushi was not properly kept and sitting out for a long time. Soy sauce: Something is really off about the soy sauce they offer. I'm not really sure what. I think it must be a cheaper variety they are trying to cut costs on. It tastes weird and thicker consistency than normal. I am surprised we didn't get sick. Ate maybe half our food and couldn't manage to eat anymore because it was so bad. They asked us if we wanted to take leftovers home and I said no, the food was not good and the guy just smiled and walked away. He did not care one bit and did not bother to ask what was wrong. I wouldn't come her again if they offered me free food. I'd rather eat at McDonald's than come here. Probably one of the worst sushi places I've been to in NJ. Sushi village in little falls might be the only place that is worse than Double Ai. read more
