We came in on a rainy cold Saturday. It was busy for 2 o'clock in the afternoon actually quite packed. We seated ourselves right away. It was seat yourself plenty of tables open. It was a lively busy, good ambience. We sat down and we were immediately greeted by our server who ran the entire dining room with ease... He immediately asked how we were doing and what we would like to drink, he was helpful with suggestions. We placed our drink order and then looked at the menu. Our drinks came promptly and we ordered their Pretzel sticks appetizer. It came out within 10 minutes. Everything was delicious. The food that came out of the kitchen look appetizing. We opted for Thai Chili and at the suggestion of the bartender the off the menu Buffalo Garlic Parm. They need to add it to the menu of flavors because it was that good. Wings did take quite some time to come out, could be because they were busy before a UConn game was about to tip off, but they were worth the wait. Wings were crispy and perfectly sauced up. I've been coming here for years during Football season and have always enjoyed the food and drinks. Typically, I like to get a wrap with the famous tetris shaped tots. My friend suggested we go to Double Play Café last night after a concert at the Oakdale Theatre. There was a large crowd for a late on a Saturday night, and we sat at a high top table. We were cold from standing outside for a while at the concert and decided to have some hot drinks. I had a coffee. It was delicious. We then ordered some food. I had the avocado, mozzarella, caprice he salad. I enjoyed it very much. It was fresh and had a very nice balsamic glaze on top. The place has a great reputation and when I went there years ago it was really good. Friendly staff, cold beer, great cheese surfs. Went for trivia recently and found the service a little slow but the staff was otherwise great. The disappointing part was the Reuben. The rye bread was barely toasted, the ample supply of corned beef seemed processed, a thin veneer of maybe cole slaw was presenting but contributed nothing and there may have been Russian dressing involved, but I can't be sure. The complete absence of any cheese, Swiss or otherwise, didn't really help. As a side, i ordered the tots. Usually a great idea. So the tots come out and they are shaped like various Tetris pieces. Cute? Yes, if you're 8. And if they were hot or crispy, they would probably have been okay. However, they were undercooked. The whole thing, sandwich and side came out lukewarm to room temperature at best. So, why did I eat it rather than sending it back? Well, I hadn't eaten anything else that day so I was pretty hungry and this took long enough the first time. Now the place was even busier so no telling when I might see anything again. Came here for the first time yesterday for "National Cheeseburger Day" (totally serious) and saw that they had K LaMay steamed cheeseburgers. I have NO IDEA why or how this is the first time we've been there! The waitress was very friendly and sweet, the food was AWESOME and fresh, in our order for 4 of us, we had 2 steamed cheeseburgers, onion rings, sweet potato fries, pretzel beer battered cheese curds, ballpark pretzel twists, and Buffalo wings and all of it was FANTASTIC! I had a Counterweight Headway on draft (Yay!) and it was fresh as can be! It was a nice, casual, local place that I will definitely be back to! Pretty annoyed. Went here on st Patty's after getting out of work. Last call was called at 1am (when bars close at 2am on Saturday's). So my friend and I ordered another beer and ten minutes later the TVs were off and the door was locked. I kindly asked the bouncer if we could stay and finish our beers, and he said "nope you gotta go, finish your beer." So I wasted my money and my beer and had to leave, and drive elsewhere at 120am. My first visit to Double Play Cafe in Wallingford, CT occurred shortly after I moved into the area from Texas. I was starving for some good nachos and this looked like a good place. Service was prompt and the manager quickly picked up on my Texas accent; we promptly engaged in a lively conversation about the Texas Rangers, the NY Yankees and the Red Sox. He even showed me a framed print of Nolan Ryan, one of my favorite all-time players. My second visit (today July 5, 2018, was not so great. It was about 12:30 p.m. and the place wasn't busy at all. Seated myself and it took a few minutes for the bartender to acknowledge my presence. When she finally did notice me, I placed my order for Mexican nachos and iced tea. She brought my set-up and tea right away and left me to wait for my food. Well, I waited. And waited. And when I was through waiting, I waited some more. After about thirty minutes, I collected my belongings and stepped to the bar. The lady told me that my food (nachos, mind you!) would "be up any minute". I told her to cancel my order and offered to pay for the iced tea. She asked me if I wanted the food to go. No, I just wanted to cancel the food order and pay for the tea.
