Our sports-loving older kids were immediately drawn in by the variety of sports playing on the big screens while the 70s music created a fun, nostalgic vibe that we really enjoyed. Our waitress, Megan was friendly, attentive and handled our group's varied requests with ease. The food didn't disappoint--especially the ribs, which were incredibly tender and literally fell off the bone. Great menu choices for the kids and all came with ice cream and chocolate sauce. One standout was the kid's macaroni and cheese-- it was clearly homemade and not the typical box version you often see on kid's menus at other restaurants. She kept conversation going, was quick with the drinks and made sure we got our food order right before the kitchen closed. I've been here before in person and the wings and fried pickles were excellent, with a great selection of drinks. They do a pretty good burger too. However, my recent takeout experience was subpar. I ordered a plain caesar salad for $13 and it was so small it barely even filled the small takeout container. I also ordered mozzarella sticks for $13 that were so overcooked they were barely edible. I learned about Salty Dog Tavern because I was looking for a relatively nearby wing spot I hadn't tried and the Wing Addicts Central CT Wing Trail pointed me there. It's essentially a neighborhood sports bar. Not fancy. But it's comfortable and there are many TV's. I arrived around 12:15 p.m. on a football Sunday game day. There were a few people there when I arrived, but by 1 p.m. game time, it was getting full. I sat at the bar. Service was friendly, helpful and efficient. They had a great special that is available at various times. 6 wings (they actually gave me 7) and a domestic draft (I went with Yuengling) for $10. That's basically the cost of the 6 wings, plus a free beer. I'll be making some plans to return for that deal. The Wing Addicts website recommended the Miso Honey and the Apple Jerk wings. I probably wouldn't have chosen either flavor on my own, but I think when you take a restaurant recommendation, you're usually better off taking an order recommendation from the same person. There is a lot to like about Salty Dog's chicken wings. They were meaty. Tasted fresh. Both wings were tender inside. The Miso Honey had a nice crispy texture outside. The Apple Jerk had a softer, almost slightly battered vibe. But it seemed like a style choice and it worked. I tried both the blue cheese and ranch. Both top tier for CT wing spots. Both flavors had a unique taste. I liked the Apple Jerk better. I tasted both apple flavor and jerk flavor, but neither was overpowering. I would not order this version of the Miso Honey again. The flavor profile skewed a bit too salty for my tastes. I suspect they're mixing ingredients on the spot for that sauce. I wonder if sometimes the sauce has more honey. I think that would have added some balance. In any event, it tasted great with the slightly sweet Ranch. I've seen enough that I'm definitely returning to explore more flavors. The black garlic parm sounds very intriguing. I'll also have to try a Buffalo sauce, because that's a baseline for judging wings for me. I've had Yuengling many times. This one tasted super fresh. The carbonation level was perfect. They had a decent craft beer selection as well, but they weren't part of the $10 deal. 4.5 Stars. I recommend Salty Dog for wings and sports watching. read more

I've seen pictures of the salty dog taverns food online, sadly the quality did not live up to them. We ordered the bourbon wings, the only thing I could taste was the artificial smoke flavor. We also had the mini corn dogs which was sadly the best thing on the menu. We both had burgers, I specified I wanted mine well done and the waitress just told me that they are Smashburger so they're pretty much always well done but she would put it in the notes... Well I'm not really sure how it's possible but my thin thin burger was still a little pink. Our tots were supposed to come loaded, when they didn't we both said it was fine but she insisted on fixing it. I wished we had just left them playing as "loaded" was a watery cheese sauce, the small sprinkle of and fake bacon bits. We both left there with stomach aches from the loads of grease $95 later (including 2 beers and a drink, ipa draft was $9 each. We have driven past this place multiple times and never noticed it. The wait at Longhorn and Texas Roadhouse was over an hour so we looked for somewhere else. My husband found this tavern and we will definitely be coming back. The decor is currently still that of a sports bar but it will switch to resemble more of a tavern. The place was clean including the restrooms. Our son loved the ribs which were a preview to their new menu coming after the Super Bowl. I ordered the ribs also and enjoyed them too. My husband went to one of his favs which is a buffalo chicken wrap. He enjoyed his sandwich and also had the tater tots which we both thought were awesome. They were crispy and seasoned perfectly. We with the kid here one day we might have been the only people there at the time. This being said the food was delicious. I had the hot dog with sweet potato waffle cut fries. My daughter had the soup and a burger. She loved my fries so much she wanted an order of her own too. And to be honest my fries were amazing. I have to be honest I've never eaten here. I called up the places a to go food order and the person that was taking the order told me that I needed to use the Website I tried to do that and there was no way for me to pay cash they wanted me to use a charge card and I don't do that on websites. I called up and told them that I would be coming in to pay cash and they said they do not except cash for to go orders???. The whole thing made no sense to me.
