We stumbled across this place by complete accident and were pleasantly surprised by this unique little restaurant. The food was delicious--definitely on the pricey side, but worth trying. My son still asks to go back because he loved his pizza so much! The reason for the 3 stars is the service (and fly in the beer). Our server wasn't the friendliest. When my husband's beer arrived with a fly in it, she just grumbled something and took the drink away without an apology, making us feel like we were the inconvenience. I was a bit worried about how the rest of the evening would go, but thankfully, it turned out fine. All in all, a memorable find with great food--just hoping for a better service experience next time. read more

If you are in Spearfish, you don't want to miss this amazing sourdough, stone oven pizza! It has the most unique, cozy atmosphere, but there isn't a lot of seating and it's usually pretty busy! I have never been disappointed in the pizza here, and we have enjoyed a lot of them. They have a lot of wonderful combinations or you can create your own. We had the Pompeii and it was delicious. We also ordered a Bacon Beets Goat Cheese salad and it was so so good! The staff is friendly and truly you can't go wrong here! Been coming for years but the service has gone downhill. Had to wait an hour and 20 minutes for food. Never got checked on to refresh drinks during our wait. Definitely don't go here if you're in a hurry. Pizza is good, it's cash only business, and poor wait times. read more

Wow. Great Pizza in Spearfish SD. Outstanding beer selection as well. Salads were done very well. It's one thing to be able to deliver a stellar hot 'pie'. It's a whole other level of skill to do it with a unique cold beer and a great salad - that at least makes me feel healthy eating it. But, be sure to bring CA$HOLA.... They don't take plastic. Very bland pizza with minimal toppings. If it was just a bread place it would be good as the crust was very nice. Inside was fine. Spent $85 on pizza and then they wanted to charge me $1 a piece for small containers of ranch! No service as I got it to go. I will try somewhere else as the was a yelp miss for pizza read more

The beet salad is to die for! There is a good selection of pizzas (my favorite is King Leonidas) using delicious sourdough crust. Service is friendly and prompt. Our favorite place when visiting Spearfish but last night they were way off their game. Server was marginal, extremely slow service. It took 45 min to get our cheesy bread appetizer & another 15 min for the pizza. It was cold in the dining area and the staff didn't seem to care, so we moved closer to the fire place to warm up only to be told that the server put the reserved sign on the wrong table and we'd need to move back to the table we were at. We'll take a few years off before going back. Lots of other places to eat in Spearfish. read more

We stopped in a Saturday afternoon. one table was occupied inside and three tables were occupied outside. We were told by the young lady at the door that we needed a reservation. The website says reservation recommended. She explained that there was a sign posted outside (there was not). So I asked to make a reservation for thirty minutes from the time we were there. She said no, that reservations had to be 24 hours in advance. When stopping from out of town, not knowing we needed reservations and there being a total of twelve people eating at the time, we thought it was ridiculous that we could not get a table. We left and went down the road to Sawyers where we were greeted kindly, had a table and ate wonderful pIzza. Would not recommend Dough Traders again even though we had eaten there many times. read more

Can't say enough good things about this restaurant. My wife and I each got a beet salad, and wow! So delicious! My wife got a "dances with goats" pizza, I got a "veggies are for lovers". The best crust I've ever had and I've had a LOT of pizza! Had to search a bit to find this little hideaway but what a gem! Friendly, affable staff, great ambiance. And don't skip the salad with the house ginger dressing, all the flavors work together and it was a treat in addition to the great pizza. Mitch is a stud, he nailed it for me! I had to get the pepperoni and sausage pizza for $18 didn't even take them 20 minutes to have it ready walked in grabbed a slice of heaven and walked right out this pizza is absolutely delicious I can't think of a better place to go 18 bucks can feed at least two people. The food was amazing! We ordered the Betty Rizzo & I was very impressed. The waitress was so sweet & did a great job at making sure we were taken cared of. UNFORTUNATELY, one of the workers friends were sitting at the bar talking and singing OBNOXIOUSLY loud that we couldn't hear the conversations going on at the table. I wouldn't have mind it so much if she had been a little more mindful to the fact that this is a restaurant and not a college lounge area. We were looking forward to visiting this place as the reviews about the food were so positive. Unfortunately we never were able to make it to the food. We arrived about 2:00 PM and waited for about 15 min to be greeted and told it would just be a few min. There was only one other customer in the restaurant. A couple were taking on their speaker phone that could be heard throughout the restaurant. We were finally seated at a table, we asked if we could have a booth. The hostess looked flustered and said, " I can put you at this one". Which was right next to the loud people on their phone. Part of the problem was that most of the booths hadn't been cleared from lunch and the place was a mess. We apologized and said, can we please sit back at the table since it was farther away from the loud phone people. We again sat there for about 20 min. No drinks, no acknowledgment, nothing. Again, it was just us and the phone people in the restaurant. The two servers were standing behind the counter just talking, seemingly unaware of what was happening in the restaurant, which was odd since the restaurant was a mess. We decided it wasn't worth it anymore, got up and walked out. They saw us but couldn't care less that we were leaving. It was a very strange experience. Established in 2011.

The building that houses the Dough Trader was originally brought to Spearfish by Tom Bell in the 1960s as the Bell Boy Drive Inn. It has been in the Bell family since, housing a variety of businesses from The Budget Spot to Funk's pottery studio. On July 4th of 2011, the Dough Trader opened its doors for business, dedicated to providing excellent pizza and friendly service in an inviting atmosphere.

This pizza crust is made with 130 year old sour dough starter and among the best I've ever tasted. I know a guy who said he is traveling 1200 miles just to sample it based on what he's heard of the quality.
