On the home from the doctor in Norfolk today I suddenly had a desire for Doumar's. It was a quick decision. I was almost at the light at Monticello with just enough time to get into the turn lane for a detour to the longtime Norfolk legend. It has been a long time since I pulled into one of the car order spaces. The carhop immediately came out to take our orders. She brought no menus because everyone who frequents Doumar's doesn't need one. They also never write down a car order. We told her it was "to go" so she wouldn't bring the order out on a tray the slips over the window. How I love the things that don't change over time. There have been changed over time. The carhops no longer come out on roller skates. The order was paid for with a small handheld credit card terminal brought to the car. A few things need to change with technology. But Doumar's will always be so very much the same. The interior & signage is still the same as when I first visited in the mid 80's. The business is run by descendants of the original founders. I can still remember Al Doumar sitting on a stool behind the inside take out counter or wandering the restaurant. My barbecue sandwiches, the best in Coastal Virginia, were a delicious dinner treat paired with air fryer fries from my freezer. If you haven't tried Doumar's you've missed a wonderful experience and great food.

Can't beat the prices here. The burgers are just okay, but they hit the spot. I would really recommend this place for the ice cream over anything else! You can stop in and enjoy the vintage vibe, or you can pull up to the parking spots and have your food brought to you. It's cute and has charm! Will definitely be back for desserts, especially over the summer.

This is a nice shout out to their success.

I've always wanted to try Doumar's but it's just never really worked out any time I've been in Norfolk - plus, it's not my typical type of food I'm going to go out of my way for. We finally pulled in on Saturday while running errands nearby and decided to get some ice cream. We wanted cookies and cream but that wasn't in season (I thought that was always in!) so we went with a chocolate shake. We walked inside for take out and I browsed inside. It has far more seating inside than I thought on the left side of the building. Dou's is a local staple and something I've known all about for the 18+ years I've lived here. I love that they keep it simple, honest, and low prices with a simple menu and had a board inside with staff members who have been there for 10, 20, 30 and even 40 years! They're clearly doing it right if people are staying that long! Will be back soon to try some food. I saw some breakfast items that looked very good.

We love going to new places especially places that have been featured on DDD. The place is very nostalgic and so much memorabilia on the walls. You seat yourself and there was a wait for us to be served. The food came out and was very good. Loved my pineapple shake it had chunks of pineapple in it. The service could have been better he never came back after dropping off our food and then showed up at the end to give us the bill. The people next to us sat down and never got served. They ended up leaving after about 15 minutes.

Doumars is a really cool blast to the past. It's an old school drive in where the carhops come to your car and bring your food out an set it on a tray that attaches to your drivers side window. Food is good, but nothing special. They have really good homemade waffle cones for their ice cream treats. I typically get a BBQ sandwich and an Egg O Doumar. Service is typically great and the food comes out quickly.

Still a great spot for delicious food, fun to sit in your car and have your food brought out to you! There is seating inside if that is more your speed or come with a large group! This second visit we shared a cherry coke, deluxe burger, fries, and cherry chocolate milkshake!

Love the history of this place. The setting is very retro, and I like that it's authentic, not one of those places that is actually fairly new but trying to be vintage. My ice cream was very reasonably priced - coming from Phoenix, AZ, it actually felt quite cheap. It was also very tasty. Service was decent - not great, not horrible. One of the staff saw me snapping photos and approached me to share a bit of history and showi the waffle cone machine. I really appreciated that, and it made a big difference in my experience with the establishment. They also have binders with old photographs and facts about this and other old diners in the area. You have to go outside to get to the restrooms, which isn't ideal but maybe that's in line with the authentic old-school experience!

Reminds me of my childhood. Classic drive in food place. The food honestly isn't anything spectacular but the experience and prices make it worth it to me. Service is always good, and the restaurant maintains the nostalgic look and feel.

Great little dive with inexpensive burgers and dogs and great ice cream from a local Virginia dairy in a thier hand rolled waffle cones. Nice to see some old places still around to give you some real nostalgia and not some new attempt to recreate it.

Our server was very nice. I wish they had menus already up or even QR codes so you can pull it up, as the first thing asked was if we were ready, but didn't know the menu. Then it took a bit for her to return. There were three of us and we ordered: banana milkshake, butter pecan single dip cone, and a strawberry single dip cone. The banana milkshake tasted a little bit like a fake flavor and only had some banana slices. The butter pecan ice cream was good and the cone was very good. The strawberry ice cream I didn't get to try but looked nice, with fresh strawberry inside. Came here mostly for the nostalgia, but wouldn't return otherwise just because there really aren't enough ice cream flavors and even choosing the one I got was difficult because it's not my usual choice.

A man st for anyone visiting the city! The first ever waffle cone was from here and they still make them fresh with an old machine. I opened the place up at 9 and had the Ringo which has the leftover broken waffle cone pieces made into a small sundae. Delicious. Very nostalgic and enjoyable experience.

So much fun going to get an ice cream cone! Got to watch cones being made on the first ice cream cone machine dating back to 1904. Had the chocolate ice cream and it was soooo good! Very chocolaty and not sickening sweet.

I have been here several times to pick up food, but this was my first time actually going inside to order. The line was long around lunchtime, but it moved quickly. It is fast casual style, so you walk down the line choosing what you want and then pay at the register. I honestly had no idea that was how it worked before, so I was prepared to wait a while. I was pleasantly surprised at how efficient everything was. I was in and out much faster than expected. While putting my order together, the man helping me handed me a sample rib over the counter. I am a very socially awkward person and do not handle unexpected moments very gracefully, so I probably reacted a little awkwardly. That part was on me. The rib was GOOD though. He was very kind about my reaction and even handed me a napkin. The whole staff was friendly, asking how my week was going and checking in to make sure everyone was happy. Even though it was busy, they clearly care about customer service. The food was great. The garlic and green onion sausage had so much flavor, and the bananamisu was the perfect sweet finish. I originally went in hoping to order the BBQ oxtail, but they were sold out within two hours of opening, which honestly says a lot about how good they must be. I had also gone the day before around 7 PM and they had already closed because they were sold out for the day. Just a heads up that they do close early if they run out of food. Overall, great food, friendly staff, and quick service. I will definitely be back and hopefully I will finally catch the oxtail next time.

The Food is REALLY GOOD! I had the Pork & Pollock; a healthy lump of pulled pork with two pieces of battered and fried pollock, a cup of slaw and a side of your choice (I got the Cindy's Mac-n-cheese). This is not my first time at this store, but overall they have been weaker than others, so I kept pocketing reviews. That term "pocketing" is used by review writers that they will not write due to a negative experience, or want to visit again. This is probably my 4th, or 5th visit since they opened over 6 years ago. The business is tucked away in a parking lot off I64 and North Hampton beside Chick Fil A. So you must snake around the lot. Once you arrive there is plenty of parking. I was immediately taken back by the amount of trash in the lot, especially one particular pile that looked freshly dumped. The footprint of this Mission is smaller than others, for that matter smaller than Virginia Beach around 8 miles away. The size seems correct for the amount of business they receive. I entered the store on a weekday around 12:30 PM. I noticed trash on their patio too! My instincts were to turn around and leave. I immediately alerted the manager of the trash. He was busy preparing a major catering order. He did not thank me, he did not utter a word. He rolled his eyes. I specifically came to Mission with it being National Peach Cobbler Day. I absolutely adore Missions peach cobbler. I ordered a pulled port lunch with green beans that comes with corn bread. I added a peach cobbler. I was not asked if military, which they provide a discount. They ALWAYS ask, first time they have not. So ok, no discount today. I respect the mission of the business to support military and first responders. The staff clearly did not want to be there, no smile no enthusiasm when I exclaimed it's National Peach Cobbler Day and yours rocks! This was the first time I've ever encountered staff at Mission like that. They were not busy, so I expected almost immediate turn around. Even when busy the Mission staff are like Ninjas. It comes out in minutes. So I waited. Order up, no smoke by staff #2. Or is it #3 because the manager sure never smiled. I found a seat. The dining room was pretty empty and clean. Dug into my lunch and the pulled pork is a favorite and was great! The green beans dry, the cornbread not edible and worse of all the peach cobbler not as good, the breading was dry. I asked another staff if they had fresh cornbread. Another staff brought out two center pieces, she was friendly but no apologies. It was still dry and not edible. This staff never did another check unfortunately. If she had I would have reported my overall dissatisfaction with the meal. Upon walking out I could not help myself. I began picking up trash on the patio with a nearby can to easily dispose of. What seemed obvious is this. They had more than enough staff. Their resources were being strained because a major catering order that had all hands on deck. It seemed apparent this was the priority. I did notice the like of trash was picked up, but nearby trash let untouched, that's just lazy! Later in the evening I got very sick, of course it's unknown why with having a dinner meal as a possible culprit too. So 50/50 chance its Mission. I will never return to the Norfolk Mission again and fully believe corporate needs to step in to thoroughly look into items I've outlined. I will continue to support Mission BBQ. Again this hurts to write. 1.5 rounding up because I can bring myself to a 1 star. I feel like I've been ripped off from $18+
