On the home from the doctor in Norfolk today I suddenly had a desire for Doumar's. It was a quick decision. I was almost at the light at Monticello with just enough time to get into the turn lane for a detour to the longtime Norfolk legend. It has been a long time since I pulled into one of the car order spaces. The carhop immediately came out to take our orders. She brought no menus because everyone who frequents Doumar's doesn't need one. They also never write down a car order. We told her it was "to go" so she wouldn't bring the order out on a tray the slips over the window. How I love the things that don't change over time. There have been changed over time. The carhops no longer come out on roller skates. The order was paid for with a small handheld credit card terminal brought to the car. A few things need to change with technology. But Doumar's will always be so very much the same. The interior & signage is still the same as when I first visited in the mid 80's. The business is run by descendants of the original founders. I can still remember Al Doumar sitting on a stool behind the inside take out counter or wandering the restaurant. My barbecue sandwiches, the best in Coastal Virginia, were a delicious dinner treat paired with air fryer fries from my freezer. Stopped by on way home from Dr appointment to pick up dinner. Doumar's has been around my entire life and has always been a favorite of mine. My friend got 2 barbecues and I got 2 hotdogs and fries. We got our food to go. Our waitress was very nice and in no time we had our food and was headed home. The barbecue sandwiches had a large amount of meat on them and my friend said they were delicious. My hotdogs and fries were as usual just perfect. Can't beat the prices here. The burgers are just okay, but they hit the spot. I would really recommend this place for the ice cream over anything else! You can stop in and enjoy the vintage vibe, or you can pull up to the parking spots and have your food brought to you. It's cute and has charm! I've always wanted to try Doumar's but it's just never really worked out any time I've been in Norfolk - plus, it's not my typical type of food I'm going to go out of my way for. We finally pulled in on Saturday while running errands nearby and decided to get some ice cream. We wanted cookies and cream but that wasn't in season (I thought that was always in!) so we went with a chocolate shake. We walked inside for take out and I browsed inside. It has far more seating inside than I thought on the left side of the building. Dou's is a local staple and something I've known all about for the 18+ years I've lived here. I love that they keep it simple, honest, and low prices with a simple menu and had a board inside with staff members who have been there for 10, 20, 30 and even 40 years! We love going to new places especially places that have been featured on DDD. The place is very nostalgic and so much memorabilia on the walls. You seat yourself and there was a wait for us to be served. The food came out and was very good. Loved my pineapple shake it had chunks of pineapple in it. The service could have been better he never came back after dropping off our food and then showed up at the end to give us the bill. The people next to us sat down and never got served. Obsessed with this place! We were looking for a place that had good ole American diner food and this place hit the nail right on! I love the old fashioned drive thru, the lady who served us and took our order was so sweet and friendly, the food was SO GOOD. Doumars is a really cool blast to the past. It's an old school drive in where the carhops come to your car and bring your food out an set it on a tray that attaches to your drivers side window. Food is good, but nothing special. They have really good homemade waffle cones for their ice cream treats. I typically get a BBQ sandwich and an Egg O Doumar. Love the history of this place. The setting is very retro, and I like that it's authentic, not one of those places that is actually fairly new but trying to be vintage. My ice cream was very reasonably priced - coming from Phoenix, AZ, it actually felt quite cheap. It was also very tasty. Service was decent - not great, not horrible. One of the staff saw me snapping photos and approached me to share a bit of history and showi the waffle cone machine. I really appreciated that, and it made a big difference in my experience with the establishment. They also have binders with old photographs and facts about this and other old diners in the area. Then it took a bit for her to return. There were three of us and we ordered: banana milkshake, butter pecan single dip cone, and a strawberry single dip cone. The banana milkshake tasted a little bit like a fake flavor and only had some banana slices. The butter pecan ice cream was good and the cone was very good. The strawberry ice cream I didn't get to try but looked nice, with fresh strawberry inside. Came here mostly for the nostalgia, but wouldn't return otherwise just because there really aren't enough ice cream flavors and even choosing the one I got was difficult because it's not my usual choice. read more

A man st for anyone visiting the city! The first ever waffle cone was from here and they still make them fresh with an old machine. I opened the place up at 9 and had the Ringo which has the leftover broken waffle cone pieces made into a small sundae. Delicious. Very nostalgic and enjoyable experience. read more

We came after watching a show "Aswang" at ODU. This was pretty much a recommendation from a student knowing most places around are closed by then. The place is interesting. It's kind of a drive through but you park on designated places and you place your order and food is brought to your cars. They are pretty quick to bring your order. The waitress is so nice, efficient and knows the products being sold. Her recommendations are on point. The burgers are so tasty and delicious. The milk shake heavenly, creamy and perfectly sweet. Doumar's has reasonably priced fast food. It's diner style with a drive-in, so you can order from your car and eat outside. The staff was nice and the food came out fast. There's a lunch rush so it's best to go outside of that timeframe. I ordered fries, a bbq sandwich, a cheeseburger, and a vanilla shake. It was less than $20. The burger was ok, I wish it was seasoned, it would have been better. The fries were crispy and hot, but had no salt. They are only about $2.70 so it's not a large order. But still filling. I wasn't a fan of the bbq sandwich. It was just too porky and it didn't have any sauce. Besides the pork taste, it had no flavor. If it had sauce maybe I'd like it more. Also if you're on lunch it's a messy sandwich. It's chopped so it falls out of the bun. In the blink of an eye I lost 1/3 of the sandwich. It was pork and coleslaw all over my shirt and floor. Lol. It was no way around it. I did enjoy the vanilla shake. It was creamy and good!!! Also it was a good size for what I paid. I probably wouldn't go out of the way to eat here often, but if they make a few adjustments it could make the food more enjoyable. Even if it's just salt and pepper it would help the burger. The bbq sandwich should be changed altogether. It wasn't what I expected. I will say their homemade hot sauce is delicious. It had a tangy kick!! It was good to dip my fries in and it helped the bbq sandwich some. All in all I do like to stop here when I'm in the area. The food is cheap and I'm in and out pretty quickly !! The food prices have gone up a little bit in the past few years, but the food is still excellent and served fast. I traditionally have the Egg-o-Doumar fried egg and ham sandwich; fries; limeade with plain water; and strawberry shortcake. The service is cheerful and pleasant. We park our car at the drive-in, turn our lights on, and the waitresses come to us with menus. They leave a metal tray on the side of our window with our food on it. I can't really speak to the ambiance of the inside of the restaurant, since we always do the drive-in. But we frequently get to watch one of the Misters Doumar make ice cream cones on the World's Original Ice Cream Making Machine. Stopped into Doumars today on my way to the Chrysler Museum. The location is super convenient for any attraction in Norfolk- the zoo, Chrysler museum, mall and shopping are all nearby. The food took less than 5 minutes from order to in front of me - the food is all freshly made in house down to the bun. It is phenomenal food for the old school prices! The entire meal was under $10. I had a grilled cheese and fries with the classic vanilla ice cream cone, all of which was very tasty! We dined in instead of the car hop service. Greeted immediately. We all got cheeseburgers and fries. Asked for ranch dressing, no dressing. Only ketcup and mustard. Asked for barbecue sauce, no barbecue sauce as a condiment, although they SELL barbecue. It's ok to stick with some of the old school traditions but you should think about adding some new staples too. I have never been to anyone's barbecue place and they don't have barbecue sauce blended into their food or as a condiment. Also, they don't sell bottle water. read more
