Great food and excellent service and I had a good tasty burger and fries are excellent

I was visiting downtown Northfolk a couple of weeks ago while in town for an event and decided to grab a quick bite to eat for lunch. This Location is on Granby Street which has a lot of different restaurants and food options. I decided to try out Al's because this was the only hot dog spot I had seen while in town and I'm always down for a good hot dog. So I decided to try it out. This is a decent size restaurant with five or six tables and a counter that you can order take out or dine in from. There were two lovely Latinas working the restaurant that day and even though I was there slightly before lunch, they agreed to allow me to order off of the lunch menu. I ordered the spicy New Yorker and the chili cheese dog. Both were really solid. Made fresh with soft buns and sizable franks. This is definitely a spot I would check out in the future. read more

Stumbled upon this place while walking around trying to find a place to eat and decided to give it a go. Couldn't decide what I wanted so I stood there for quite a while. Ended up ordering the beef Philly sandwich with a side of Mac and cheese. Both came to around $12. Paid and sat down at a table in the back. My food came a few minutes after and all looked good. Took a bite of the sandwich and it was DELICIOUS!! I took one star off because when I took a bite of the Mac and cheese, it was cold. Like, cold cold. So I asked the lady if it was supposed to be cold and she questioned why it was cold and immediately took it and got me a hot bowl of Mac and cheese. I guess the other workers forgot to warm it up? No idea but things happen. The Mac and cheese was delicious tho. Next time they just need to make sure it's not cold. I will be going back if I'm in the area cause there's a lot on the menu I'd like to try. read more

I need to establish a couple things. Famous Uncle Al's is one of the areas older hot dog places that's still around. I say that to say that for reasons of nostalgia I find this a hard review to write. The service was ok. To clarify the waitress was great but when we first came in we weee standing up front waiting to have our order taken for quite a while since employees seemed to be busy chatting and having phone calls. The food was disappointing. We came in at about 1230 so not super late in the day and we couldn't find a full ketchup at any surrounding table. One of them the ketchup was a bit sour. The fries were ok. The hot dog was not as good. The buns were borderline stale. The tables and seating area were also not clean. It appeared the tables had not been wiped at all. There are too many other good places close by to do this again. read more

I've been a regular at famous Uncle Al's for years, mainly because it's so close to home and has always been my go-to spot for a quick, comforting breakfast on my days off. Recently, I learned that the restaurant is under new management, with new staff as well. While change can sometimes be exciting, I have to be honest the atmosphere doesn't feel as warm and homey as it used to. That welcoming, familiar vibe I loved seems to be missing for now. I'm hopeful this is just a period of adjustment. I plan to give it some time before making a final judgment, but I do miss the old energy and sense of family the place once had. Good choice for keto or ketovaur. I like the salad plate - $10 which comes with tuna salad, egg salad, and chicken salad. The spinach salad is also a good choice. If you wanna add a meat item to that. Great prices in here, but the place is closed at 2 PM every day. read more

If you go I suggest the hotdogs. I was happy with the hotdogs and if i go back ill definitely stick to the hotdogs. Got a crispy chicken sandwich as well and the crispy chicken sandwich was just average I felt like it's something I can make at home. Tasted like just a regular old Sam's club frozen chicken patty. Which isn't a good thing when I'm going out to eat. If I'm paying a price like that. I don't want to think as I'm eating "this taste like the one I made a home last month" So in my humble opinion. Stick with the dogs. I may try a burger next time just to say I tried it. Unless it's a frozen patty. When I'm guessing I'd have the same opinion as I did with the chicken sandwich. read more

It's a little confusing for a first timer. If you're picking up or ordering to go stay at the front. If you're eating in go to the back and have a seat. You can pick up your cup and self serve a drink before you sit. A waitress will come take your order but she's alone so it was a bit busy at lunch time. Hotdogs were very good. More of a sausage than normal hotdog. Onion rings had great flavor but were not hot. Sriracha mayo was excellent. Prices are good. Would definitely return. Unfortunately I have to edit my review. I cannot say with 100% certainty, but I am 90% sure I got some bad food here. While I enjoyed the meal, about two hours later I was not feeling well with GI issues that lasted about 12 hours. I normally wouldn't write a review, but since this has happened more than once, I feel it needs to be addressed. I really like the convenience of ordering breakfast online and picking it up at the estimated time. Unfortunately, there have been multiple occasions where my order was not ready and was only started once I arrived -- even though I arrived at the ETA provided. The first time this happened, two employees were chatting in an empty store, so I asked about my order. I was told they were "really busy" and that the notification didn't go off. When I asked if the manager was aware, since this seemed to be a recurring issue, I was told that I "could go elsewhere and didn't need to order from there". I was very taken aback -- that is not something a customer should ever be told. Some time passed, and I decided to give Uncle Al's another chance. Things were fine until this morning. A coworker and I placed separate online breakfast orders at the same time. Forty minutes later, I went to pick them up. My coworker's order was ready, but mine was not. I asked what happened, since the orders were submitted at the same time, and was again told that the "ding didn't go off" and only my coworker's order was received. Once again, I was told that "I didn't need to order from there". When I responded -- calmly -- that it wasn't appropriate to tell customers that, the employee snapped back, accusing me of raising my voice and saying I couldn't speak to her that way. I was speaking in a normal tone and simply asking reasonable questions. The main takeaway here is that employees should never tell customers not to order from the store due to internal mistakes. It's also clear that mornings may be understaffed, and while being overwhelmed is understandable, it's not an excuse for dismissive or rude behavior. Because of this repeated experience and attitude, I will not be ordering from Uncle Al's again, nor will others in my office. read more

Downtown Norfolk. Great place to meet up and have a lunch. Busy during the work week because it seems like the people working in this area come here. Semi-friendly staff. They are busy and move quickly for the lunch rush. Not the cleanest but not super dirty either. I just thought the drink area could have been wiped down . Onto the food. Fries were pretty good. The Club sandwich was great and we got to choose the type of bread. That made it even better. The hot pastrami sandwich is the best. Plenty of meat, thick slices of melty swiss cheese, and the mustard was perfectly spicy. YUMM. The chicken wrap was pretty good too. Make sure to check out the special for the day. That is always a good deal. I did not take a lot of pictures because it was so busy in there and we were in a hurry to get lunch and go. We had a good meal at this place on the way out of town from a recent trip to the beach. My kids loved the wings, while the chicken tenders, Italian sausage, and chili dog were less loved by those who tried them. The fries were a little bit on the "burn victims" end of crispy. Prices were fair for the portion sizes and service was fast and friendly. Famous Uncle Al's is one of the only breakfast places that provide an American classic breakfast sandwich for dining in or on the go on Granby Street. Living/working downtown I'm typically in a rush in the mornings. I can always count on Famous Uncle Al's to make a Bacon, Egg, and Cheese on an everything bagel sandwich for me. They have Daily Specials and offer not only breakfast but lunch menu items as well. Uncle Al's offers call ahead if they are not busy or online ordering. The staff is always so friendly and quick with the orders! The restaurant is clean and organized! Parking is street parking but you can find a spot during the early mornings. read more

June 2019 Better showing but not great, I had the Thursday foot long combo with chili cheese. The fries were crinkle and it was not good. The fries were dry and not fresh even though the fries are being made constantly. 2018 Not impressed... at least with this particular visit. I ordered a NY hot and it was dry and flavorless. Here's what I love about Uncle Al's: They're always nice, the service is always fast, and the food is exactly what you would expect. I don't even know where to start. However, I go to uncle Al's every single morning to get my breakfast because I work downtown in the city treasurers office. There was an older lady that worked the front with glasses. I don't remember her name. But she was great. I would call every single morning place my order, and by the time I got there, my food was ready. Every single morning like clockwork. All of a sudden someone else starts working the farm and as of today, she told me that she owned the place. With some gentleman name, Ramon. The first two times that I came she got my order wrong and the pricing wrong. The second two times I came she kept me on hold from Rosemont exit in Virginia Beach all the way until I had to walk in the building and show them that I'm still on hold. She got an attitude with me because I didn't like the fact that she kept getting my order wrong and keeping me on hold without coming back to the phone. This morning I walked in and said hey how come you didn't come back to the phone again this is the second time. And she immediately made me leave. Every single time she's at the front. She gets something wrong and then gives me her ass to kiss. There's zero accountability. Whoever this particular person is that feels like she can deal with me any type of way because she has ties to the owner is ridiculous. This establishment definitely lost a customer and I will definitely make it a part of my agenda to make sure that my friends and family and the people that I know and have some type of contact with will never eat at this particular place again. read more

My no-brainer lunch choice. This little local chain is my favorite breakfast/lunch spot on Granby. They have other locations in Hampton Roads, but the one on Granby is served is extra care. You can watch the kitchen crew make your sandwich right behind the counter, and you can either take it to-go, or chill-out in what reminds me of an early 2000's food court. Which I love! It's more homey, nostalgic, and more intimate feeling. Casual! The menu is filled with a variety of options of gourmet sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, and more. Breakfast is my favorite, and it's served until 10:45AM! They're quick, easy, and convenient. Prices are cheap, and conveniently located near my work. Love this little restaurant! read more

All across America downtown business district diners are becoming a rare breed. Replaced by trendy fast causal joints and bougie coffee shops. But there was a time when the hot dog was the king of fast food and part of the everyman's lunch. Al's has been Norfolk's go to business diner for as long as I can remember. I first ate here in the 80's with my dad while spending summer days in his office. The location has changed and think even the owners but Al's remains part of the fabric of Norfolk. You are just as likely to see a table of executives in suits and Rolex's as you are some UPS drivers, Norfolk City fire or police, construction workers a group of ladies from an office, or uniformed Coast Guard. It's clean, well run, the service is fast and good, the prices are affordable and food is simple yet great. Because there was a time when life was simpler and just sitting in Al's for a quick chili dog will take you back to that place. read more

Newly renovated, looks so much better! I come here whenever I don't bring breakfast because it's quick and Robert and his staff are always so pleasant. Most of the time, they have $1 off their breakfast sandwiches. My go-to is the bacon egg and cheese croissant. It can be just a bit on the greasy side, where sometimes I'll have to pat it down with a paper towel. Their chicken biscuit is pretty awesome too. Every once in a while I'll order lunch too from their daily lunch specials, prices are very reasonable with decent sized proportions! read more

so I have eaten here at this location only a couple of times. today I ordered 2 simple hot dogs clearly written down. I was served wrong items. when I went to return the hot dogs for the right ones the employee said what did I order. if you write it down and listen why ask again. I walked out as I had a multimillion dollar customer waiting on me. too much distracted play at front counter. Al Stien would be mortified as to how this store was being handled at the front counter. I knew him when I was about 10 and went to school with his kids. I will not be back, it would cost me more in parking versus a refund. simple food made difficult by lack of attention. this is the second time wrong item served. not coming back. read more

My favorite employee is Disney because shes very good at what she does and always get my food fast and there has never been any mistakes! I've walked past this business several times with week and just happened to walk past when they were open. It's hard to make a decent hot dog but I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered 3 hotdogs with ketchup, shredded cheese, and bacon along with a side of fries. The hotdogs didn't have to many toppings, just right. My only negative critique is that I wish the serving size of the fries was larger. The atmosphere is pleasant as there were open tables, local workers coming in for a quick meal, and polite staff. I have gone to this particular spot for lunch a few times since working in downtown Norfolk. It's nothing to get excited about, in my opinion. The place is always packed when I go in around lunch time. The seating area is generally pretty crowded when I go in so we generally take our food to go and sit outside in downtown somewhere. The wait was about 20 minutes for 1 hot dog and fries. That's pretty long considering they are most famous for their hot dogs. Not sure why it took that long. The fries were great! Not your generic taste, which is nice every once in a while. The hot dog was just okay. It had a casing that was crunchy (textured a bit odd in my opinion). Overall it was a tasty lunch but I'd rather go to one of the outdoor hot dog vendors downtown. read more

Close to my job so I come here a few times a month. They always have a burger of the month. One month was a donut burger served on a donut. Another time they had a boardwalk burger. It had liquid cheese and bacon. Both were good! The main thing I like is their breakfast. The man on the grill is cracking real eggs on pouring pancake batter on the flat top griddle. Amazing!! Home fries are just the right amount of crispy and soft. The bacon is always perfectly done. They have a punch card loyalty program. Girl at the register knows the regulars by name.
