Somehow I waited until the last day of January to get my inspection sticker. I did a Google search and found Dover Paint and Varnish. Who Da Thunk they did stickers. Stopped in at about 9:00AM and they said if I came back at noon they could take care of me. Before I could leave the parking lot they hailed me and said they could do it now. NOW IS GOOD ! While the inspection was being done I browsed the store....This is like an old fashion General Store. They have the typical convenience store stuff, hardware...... and oh yes Paint and Varnish. This place was recommended to me by a family of car lovers who know how to do everything on their cars. They know the guy who runs this place and have relied on him for many years to get them parts or to do a fix on a car that they just don't have the time or tools to do themselves. These guys do NOT rip you off. I tend to price quote my automotive needs with a couple of places before I commit and they always are the best deal. The guys work efficiently and they don't mess around with your car - and being a younger woman I always get defensive with mechanics because I worry they will take advantage of my not knowing too much about cars, but I never have to do that with them. They explain in good detail the problem your car is having and they fix it without trying to tack on extra unnecessary work. Now, keep in mind that this is a true gas station/garage so there is no where comfy to sit (a fold up chair in the corner of the basic store is all you get) and there isn't anything to read to pass the time. So if you can get someone to drop you off and pick you up, that is HIGHLY recommended. But that's ok with me, as long as I know my car is going to be well taken care of. NOTE: I did lower it one star simply because of this though - I do wish that there was a little bit more space for those of us who don't have two cars and need to wait. Dover Paint & Varnish is hands down the best garage in the Seacoast Area. I have brought my vehicles there for years and have never been disappointed. To be honest, their level of customer service, honesty and skill are of the highest quality. Customer Service- The level of customer service is over the top! The crew always makes every effort to get your vehicle in as quickly as possible and makes space as needed/required. Honesty- The car repair industry is one that is fraught with companies/owners who incent their employees to jack up the repair bill by "discovering" items that supposedly need repair. In many circumstances, the customers don't know the difference and end up paying for an unnecessary repair. The opposite is true of Dover Paint & Varnish. A couple of years ago, my father brought his vehicle to a local dealership for a routine inspection. The service desk came back with a list of items that supposedly needed to be repaired prior to receiving an inspection sticker. One of the items cited was a full fuel line replacement totaling several thousand dollars. I suggested he go to Dover Paint & Varnish for a second opinion. He brought the car in and it was determined by Dave that the fuel lines did not need to be replaced- in fact, they were fine- saving him a couple grand. In addition, they don't exponentially mark up the price of the parts needed for a repair or use a flat rate billing system- the cost of labor is the cost that was incurred-nothing more. Skill- Whenever I have brought my vehicles in, the crew always repairs the issue at hand quickly and without having to come back again. Dwayne is fantastic and so is the rest of the staff. They are smart and incredibly helpful. I would highly recommend them. They are honest and do their best every time you bring your car to them. I recently moved and took my car to another place for an oil change and state inspection. The new place told me due to being 4,000 miles over due for an oil change that I needed a engine flush. I reluctantly agreed. After getting all the services done and everything coming to $160 I called DPV and asked about the flush and Dwayne said no. He said it was a waste of money and I shouldn't do it. Sadly it was too late. Although Dwayne had no idea who he was talking to he gave sound advice without trying to take advantage. read more

I'm giving two stars because I got my money back. I just spoke with Dwayne and Richard, the owner, about how when I picked up my car last night after getting an inspection, that extra work was done to my car without letting me know and I was charged for it. I only had $40 to spend on the inspection and could have fixed a windshield wiper and two bulbs myself, one of which was a lie, because I checked my car up and down before bringing it in. After speaking with Dwayne, he said "don't worry, we didn't make any money off of it, we're just here for fun." When I asked him not to be sarcastic and disrespectful, he said "don't take it personally". That is awful customer service and it is not legal practice to do unwanted and uninformed work on a vehicle. These people are not honest and this is the third time this has happened to one of our family cars. There are better places to go. read more

I read the review that mentioned that there was nowhere to wait except for one folding chair, so I came prepared with a comfortable canvas folding chair of my own. However, I discovered that Dover Paint & Varnish/Kay's has improved the situation for their customers and now has a table an chairs available. It's not elegant, but it's functional and comfortable, and since there's a convenience store associated with the business there's a great selection of snacks and drinks that you can purchase to munch on while you wait. read more
