My husband's review of his burger is, "nothing to write home about." his fries LOOKED perfectly done but they were soft. I ordered a cup of crab bisque with a side of mexican cornbread. The cornbread was hard. Maybe it was supposed to be though as it came with a side of melted butter (pictured) i used it as a crouton in my tepid (i asked if i could have it heated) but well-seasoned bisque. We enjoyed eating at Down South Kitchen. Katelyn was very attentive. We will definitely be back soon! The crab and shrimp gumbo was wonderful, spicy and full of seafood and flavor. Prices were amazingly reasonable. Jambalaya and salad for me. My spouse enjoyed the blackened fish and the wonderful breaded fried green tomatoes with hollandaise were incredible! The best fried green tomatoes I have had since I had mom's. The jambalaya was ok, not anything super special. We were so full we had plenty of leftovers. Took home bread pudding. I had the opportunity to meet and talk with Chef Sam, a culinary school graduate with extensive experience in several medium to upscale restaurants. It came with a big fresh salad and the steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked just right and I enjoyed every bite. I liked the mashed potatoes so much that there was no gravy touching 'em. Let me talk about their gravy and salad dressing, they, like most every thing here is made fresh and in-house and both were spot on tasty. My sever Kristen, who was a joy, had already brought me me a sample of the crab bisque but then Sam brought me samples of the gumbo, red beans & rice and crawfish etouffee. Once again, freshly made and no pre-made roux that was all Sam, all delish. Although I finished my meal with their homemade bread pudding that was beautifully presented and was the perfect end to a great meal. On my next visit, with ten of my friends, I started with the Down South salad with fried chicken and that cut above honey mustard dressing and the big bowl of that crawfish etouffee, all very good! I also got to sample the fried green tomatoes with crab meat and Parmesan a the okra side was passed around that everybody really liked. I got the bread pudding and passed that around with the same results, so overall another pleasing meal and everyone agreed that we will be returning soon. Bottom line: Down South Kitchen offers a very good dining experience in Gulf Shores, highlighting its Southern charm and outstanding cuisine. From its inviting atmosphere to its flavorful dishes and delightful desserts, with excellent service and affordable prices, this local gem is sure to satisfy any craving for a genuine taste of the South and more. A very new restaurant, no real ambiance. The Toni was friendly and helpful. Food started with a cup of crab bisque that was fabulous. A little spicy and a lot of crab. I had the Saturday special blackened shrimp over a magnificent pasta with a spicy mustard sauce. Don't worry you don't taste the mustard. It came with a beautiful salad that I had to take home. OK.....Still a secret but Damn! You get comfort food, fast and friendly. There is NO better pricing for just a good lunch. Country Fried Steak is what I got and Shekera was my waitress. Glad we decided to try this place. Best fried green tomatoes we have ever eaten! I'd have posted a pic but they didn't last that long. Also had beef tips and red beans and rice. Everything was good. We decided to give this place a try since it is fairly new. Ordered carryout through Uber eats. Our food arrived promptly, but we were so disapointed. We ordered the Gumbo (which claims to "Knock your Socks off"). It was bland - tasted like tomato soup - had 2 tiny shrimp, no vegetables. The Mexican cornbread that we ordered to go with this was tasteless as well. WE live less than a mile away and were hoping this would be a new go to place for us when vacationing, but I will never go back. Expensive and terrible. read more

First time here and they earned our repeat business! Great, friendly service and the food choices are enough to offer variety without being overwhelming. The crab bisque was the best I've had anywhere, and the crab meat is plentiful. Fried green tomatoes were flavorful and crispy. The steak fries looked really good along with the pan seared chicken breast guest had. Hubby had the hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and gravy and said it was very good.
