Down South Kitchen, nestled in the heart of Gulf Shores at 2420 E 2nd St, is located next door to Big Beach Brewing. Historically, this location was home to the Ugly Diner and more recently, Cazadores Mexican Restaurant. However, based on my recent visits, I believe that Down South Kitchen is here to stay! This locally owned and operated establishment offers authentic Southern cuisine, but it's not exactly what I expected. I was anticipating lots of fried food with gravy, collard greens, and cornbread, but I was pleasantly surprised by a menu that features chicken, fish, pork, and beef with options for fried, grilled, or blackened preparations, as well as other delightful surprises. I had the opportunity to meet and talk with Chef Sam, a culinary school graduate with extensive experience in several medium to upscale restaurants. Her expertise shines through in every dish she creates. In addition to true tastes of the South, Down South Kitchen also offers Cajun/Creole choices, including Gumbo, Crawfish Etouffee, and Red Beans & Rice, along with a variety of fresh, assorted salads. One standout dish is their incredible crab bisque, which left me speechless! **Atmosphere** Down South Kitchen prides itself on its relaxed, down-home atmosphere, ensuring guests feel right at home. The cozy and inviting interior features warm lighting and comfortable seating, encouraging patrons to unwind and savor their meal. The attentive and friendly staff further enhances the welcoming environment, making every visit feel like a family gathering. **Food Offerings** The menu at Down South Kitchen showcases an array of Southern culinary delights, featuring dishes ranging from classic comfort foods to seafood specialties. Guests can indulge in tantalizing appetizers such as Gumbo, Crab Bisque, Red Beans and Rice, and Crawfish Etouffee, all in cup or bowl. Salad lovers can enjoy a variety of options, including Down South Salad with fried, grilled, or blackened chicken breast, Steak Salad with grilled flat iron steak, Big Salad, Chicken Tender Salad, and House Salad. For the main course, Down South Kitchen offers an enticing selection of entrees, including: - Hamburger Steak - Country Fried Steak - Down South Chicken - Pork Chops (fried, grilled, or blackened) - Down South Fish (fried, grilled, or blackened) - Popcorn Shrimp Plate (fried or grilled) - Down South Burger No meal at Down South Kitchen is complete without a delightful dessert. Choose from Banana Pudding, Bread Pudding, Chocolate Pie, or the Ice Cream DeJour. **Beverages** Quench your thirst with a selection of Pepsi products, lemonade, Sweet Tea, and UnSweet Tea. As of this review, they have not received their beer and liquor license, but it's coming. **Daily Specials** Down South Kitchen offers enticing daily specials: - Meatloaf Monday - 12 OZ Ribeye Tuesday - Chicken Farm Wednesday - Beef Tip Thursday - Fishy Friday - Saucy Saturday - Brunch Sunday Now, as for my dining experiences they have been excellent. On my first visit, I had the Tuesday special 12 OZ Ribeye with mashed potatoes and their white Down South gravy, accompanied by jalapeno cornbread. It came with a big fresh salad and the steak was perfectly seasoned and cooked just right and I enjoyed every bite. I liked the mashed potatoes so much that there was no gravy touching 'em. Let me talk about their gravy and salad dressing, they, like most every thing here is made fresh and in-house and both were spot on tasty. My sever Kristen, who was a joy, had already brought me me a sample of the crab bisque but then Sam brought me samples of the gumbo, red beans & rice and crawfish etouffee. Once again, freshly made and no pre-made roux that was all Sam, all delish. Although I finished my meal with their homemade bread pudding that was beautifully presented and was the perfect end to a great meal. On my next visit, with ten of my friends, I started with the Down South salad with fried chicken and that cut above honey mustard dressing and the big bowl of that crawfish etouffee, all very good! I also got to sample the fried green tomatoes with crab meat and Parmesan a the okra side was passed around that everybody really liked. I got the bread pudding and passed that around with the same results, so overall another pleasing meal and everyone agreed that we will be returning soon. Bottom line: Down South Kitchen offers a very good dining experience in Gulf Shores, highlighting its Southern charm and outstanding cuisine. From its inviting atmosphere to its flavorful dishes and delightful desserts, with excellent service and affordable prices, this local gem is sure to satisfy any craving for a genuine taste of the South and more. Glad we decided to try this place. Best fried green tomatoes we have ever eaten! I'd have posted a pic but they didn't last that long. Also had beef tips and red beans and rice. Everything was good. The restaurant has an old southern diner feel, clean and cool. The service is A+. We ate here on Thursday around 2pm. Located across the street from Tacky Jacks Gulf Shores location.

Went for a late lunch and some music - he had hamburger steak, I had fresh grilled fish - great service, fun crowd! We'll be back!!

They are located near Tacky Jacks, Big Beach brewery, and Pelican Ice cream shop!

Hominy, hush puppies, cornbread, grits, Alabama white sauce on any meat, especially smoked chicken, are all popular in Alabama. BBQ is practically a religion in the South! As former certified Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) certified judges, my husband and I completed the training and paid the fees to be certified. The "KCBS way" is different from a lot of people's preferences in that, for example, a BBQ rib should actually have some "pull" to it, meaning, when you bite into it, your mouth should leave a mark in the rib. This means "fall off the bones" ribs are not KDBS quality, despite how many love that rib consistency. The KCBS judges slots fill up so quickly and required us to travel at our own cost and we did not judge any KCBS events. Back to Southern food. Deep fried double Oreos are one of the many fried foods here in Huntsville, and Melt restaurant features them on their menu. Meat-and-Three restaurants feature a meat (usually fried pork chop, meatloaf, BBQ, fried catfish, country fried steak/chicken) and three sides (fried okra, creamed corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked potato, potato salad, cole slaw, French fries) and bread options such as cornbread, rolls, hush puppies. While Southern Cooking is absolutely delicious, I have to limit it because lets face it, it is high in calories and cholesterol. When I do indulge, it's shrimp and grits, pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, and fried whole okra.

Love that pimento cheese ball appetizer with that blueberry pepper jelly! For lunch, I had the meat and three. It was all good, especially the collard greens. I HATE THAT I CAN'T REMEMBER HER NAME, BUT SHE WAS ON TOP OF IT AND SUPER DELIGHTFUL. DRINKS The bar area looked really nice. Most of my table had iced tea which everybody enjoyed. I also got a beer from the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I was very impressed by their beer selection and they are a verified venue on the Untappd app so you can go to that app to look at all the beer selection and even filter and sort the beers so that you can have an easier time selecting the proper beverage. It even came out in a glass that matched the beer that I had! I like that extra touch.

But it was brought with the meal. The salad was fresh and crisp, with a surprise of a small Peppa dew pepper. Blazing red with a little heat and delicious. Haven't seen them in a restaurant ever. Unfortunately my fish and potatoes were cold, cold and butter congealed. The greens were warm and good I had also ordered the cornbread. It was refreshing to see that it wasn't the usual cake like kind, plus not the ultra sweet kind either. More bread like with a hint of sweetness. Delicious. The fish and potatoes had a nice flavor but unfortunately the cold food spoiled the experience. Since I was a guest of my sister I didn't say anything about the cold food. What a disappointment. Maybe when I return things will be better.
