This place is kind of hidden. It is off the highway underneath the bridge that connects Fernandina Beach to Yulee. Turn into the entrance of the restuarant Schuckers and you'll see signs to go around the corner to get to Down Under. The food is typical beachside food: fried, seafood but comforting. The most unique feature is the way they prepare their Caesar salad which comes as a whole lettuce rather than chopped. The she crab soup was delicious and creamy. The fresh catch of the day happened to be Mahi Mahi which was good but portion a bit small for the cost of $22. Overall a solid place to eat after taking the boat out at Amelia Island Marina athough it is pricey. read more

Monday, 9/14 7:40pm - party of 2 This place has been on my bucket list for Fernandina Beach for a couple of years. I love waterfront outdoor seating and seafood - Down Under fits the bill for both. On a slow Monday night, we saw a tugboat and couple of barges in the river. The restaurant is next to a swing bridge and train tracks which could make for some interesting views. I'm not sure if they have limited the menu during this pandemic. While they offered a variety of dishes, it seemed like there should be more. Reviews raved about the crab dip ($9) so we had to try it. The dip is very good, very tasty and not shy with the crab. It's served with toast points. The toast was just too toasted, too crunchy. I would have preferred fresh bread. For dinner, I had the seafood platter ($26). Fish, scallops and shrimp in your choice of grilled, fried or blackened with fried oysters. The waitress said the blackened is very spicy so I opted for grilled. Scallops and fish were average, oysters were too mushy to be fried, but the shrimp were perfect. Local shrimp were large and sweet. Hush puppies were very good. My friend had fried shrimp ($17) with a side salad (+ $2) and her shrimp were very crispy and good. My only real disappointment was the cocktail sauce. It was so congealed and cold that I'm not sure how fresh it was. We had to stir up the little cups to thaw it and make it edible. Warning about entering the place - the dirt road is full of potholes and dips. Take it slow or you'll do a number on your car. read more

Wanted raw oysters and this one came up with 4 stars. I must say we were not disappointed. Raw oysters were sweet and delicious. The fried oysters were plump and lightly battered. The soft shell crab sandwich was very tasty and the homemade chips were very good. The restaurant lives up to its name - its down under the A1A (Thomas J. Shave JR.) bridge. My first experience with "Down-under" was a lot of expectation that resulted in mostly disappointment. That disappointment is directed primarily at the "special," which was titled jambalaya. Unfortunately, it was as far from special as you can get. However, before I give my unfettered review of this trumped-up concoction, I will mention some high lights. The server was friendly and well informed. Food was served within 15 minutes. And the house cocktail called Sunburn, was refreshing. Now to the food. My special was literally drowning in grease. The server assured me it included andouille sausage - Not even close. The primary ingredient in this dish was tomato's, rice and a lot of grease. I found this restaurant on Yelp and it was in a kind of strange place, but I found it and it was right on the water and, you know, OK. The girls at the front were really busy and you could tell they were feeling overwhelmed, but I got seated pretty quickly. I did wait at the bar and was going to have a beer, and then I realized I couldn't drink any of it because it was very domestic. No craft. Yikes. That didn't give me a great feeling, but they serve you drinks out of plastic cups so it's not fancy. I got to sit outside and it was nice, not too hot. The water was nice but limited view. You could see the freeway, but whatever, it was fine. I looked at the menu and went straight for the oysters. Let me tell you, if you visit here, have the oysters raw, they are spectacular. Probably some of the best I've ever had. I also ordered the seafood platter for one. I really wish I had not done this. First, it wasn't cheap, it was $32. Second, it was so bad I couldn't even eat it all. I will say that the scallops and the hush puppies were amazing. The fried oysters, which I really was looking forward to, I don't even know what I was eating. The shrimp were in edible, the fish was not only burned but it was so hard I couldn't eat that either. So basically I ate a couple of the fried oysters, awful, and hush puppies which were amazing and the scallops which were stunningly good considering what they were surrounded by. The coleslaw was I don't know what that was. I didn't eat the sauces because nothing was going to save this platter. I normally would send something back that was cooked that badly, it was cold when I got it like it had been sitting in the window, mind you all all of this was fried, but the waitress who was amazing probably didn't want to hear it so I just took the huge hit on terrible food. But I would recommend not getting the seafood platter fried. By the way they use the word heaping, I couldn't believe how small the plate was for how much I got. We've passed the sign for Down Under about 100 times, but never ventured under the bridge till last week. You get there headline East on the causeway, and turn in where you see the sign for Shuckers. Only don't go to Shuckers; turn right, and meander down the dirt road, past the VFW, and under the bridge itself, and you'll find yourself at the resto. We came for lunch, and sat on the patio. First things first; they were really doing COVID-19 precautions well. Tables were well spaced, servers wore masks, menus were disposable, and when I asked for a bottle of hot sauce, the waitress replied "let me wipe it down for your first". Bravo. We had the fried oysters (a little greasy but delicious), a half dozen raw oysters, the shrimp sautéed in garlic and butter, and the fried grouper sandwich. When I asked for them to make the Sammy with Grouper, they apologized and said that I'd have to pay the Grouper price (about $24). I told them I'd be happy to do so ... and I was. The sandwich came out with an 9 or 10 oz grouper filet, juicy and expertly fried, on a butter sautéed brioche bun. Truly one of th best grouper sandwiches I've ever had. We got the crab dip that was recommended by others on here-it wasn't that bad, did have some decent meat to it, but still not anything I'd go out of my way to recommend. The Down Under Oysters were good! I'll give them that. I would recommend those. I shared the Seafood Platter, we got it blackened. It was good. I mean, as good as blackened fish typically is? Our hush puppies were very different. Not sweet. And not that good. They had this harsh pepper taste? Cheese grits didn't have cheese mixed into the grits. It was just like shredded cheese on top placed under a broiler. Our other guest got fish and chips. They were ok. A bit on the thinner side and hard fried. My mouth got a little torn up from it. Service was the worst I've had in a long time. We definitely felt like the red headed step child with our server cleaning the tables next to us without asking how our food was or if I needed more water. Back on Aug 19th Wife and I where over by Fernandina for a Doctor Appt. Once done with the Doctor it was going on 11:00 so we decided to go ahead and get something to eat. The place we chose to eat at was closed until 11:30 because they were change over from breakfast to Lunch. We didn't want to wait so we decided to go to the Down Under Restaurant. We got there and we were about the third table of the day from the looks of it. Once seated our waitress Mary came over and took our drink order and I also ordered a She Crab Soup Appetizer. When the soup was delivered it came out luke warm. Didn't see Mary so I took the cup of soup up the bar and asked the staff there to have the kitchen make it hot for me. When Mary brought it back, it was much better then before and it had a nice flavor. At this point my wife and I ordered our meal off their lunch menu. Wife ordered their Fried Fish Sandwich with homemade chips as a side and I ordered their blackened Shrimp with coleslaw. When our food arrived my wifes fried fish looked dark like they had left it in the fryer to long or like the oil in the fryer was old and needed to be changed. We tasted the fish and it didn't taste burnt so the oil probably needs to be changed more frequently I guess. Wife enjoyed the sandwich and the chips. Regarding my Blackened Shrimp, I was a bit surprised. I only received six (06) shrimp on my order they were small shrimp. It would take between 26-30 shrimp in order to make up a pound of shrimp. So I paid $12 for 4 oz. of shrimp and a small bowl of coleslaw. I will say that the coleslaw tasted fresh but it needed seasoning. Once I added a tad bit of salt to it was much better. It has been quite a while since we've been to this restaurant because we didn't feel the food was as good as it could be and we wanted to come back and see how things were now. I think we'll give this place a bit more time before we're back. I admit the wifes sandwich and chips were ok and the 4 oz of blackened shrimp I got were OK and the slaw was fresh but I just feel they should be better. Kitchen should have ensured soup was hot leaving the kitchen. Kitchen should be changing their fry oil once items start getting dark and they don't need to be cheap on what they put on the plate. Boy, was I embarrassed and disappointed. Grouper monterrey was skimpy and way over cooked just a mess now, and at that price, they should be embarrassed. Another person got tuna tacos, and the tuna was so overcooked that it was ruined even the waitress agreed, but no one offered to fix the issue. Recommended to us by the director of the WPB Fishing club, we sought out Down Under on our trip to Fernandina Beach. It was GREAT! We ordered a 1/2 lb of boiled shrimp, Chips with blue cheese and a fish sandwich with black eyed peas. The shrimp were so delicious and cooked absolutely perfectly! The sandwich was great and the chips divine. The black eyed peas were the weakest aspect as they needed a little more seasoning. This is not in the touristy downtown area of Fernandina Beach but is well worth the short drive to get under the bridge. If you are lucky you'll get the chance to sit on the patio and watch the bridge swing close and the train go by. read more

Hidden Gem! This restaurant is off the "beaten path", under a bridge, down an rocky gravel road, pass the VFW, don't fret, keep going! The food is awesome. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Our server Ms. Emily was fantastic, very knowledgeable of the menu. Although they were out of some of their popular drinks. My husband had Emily's recommendation of the Salmon BLT with sweet potato fries. The salmon was well seasoned served on a toasted bun with crisp bacon, lettuce and tomato. I choose the Oyster Rockefeller and Oysters topped with crab meat. They were served on a hot tray with rock salt. They were fresh and delicious. I wasn't fond of the hush puppies. We have eaten here many times and the food is very good. We usually get the seared tuna appetizers and I have even gotten it as an entree. My son ordered the shrimp and grits, he enjoyed that very much and my wife ordered the fish special which was a dill crusted salmon with garlic herb butter. She loved it! I was a bit disappointed with the fish and chips we ordered. The portion of 2 pieces of fish was pitiful. For the price of $20 I shouldn't have my kid say they are still hungry after eating it. Of course there was a pile of fries, but I was unhappy with that. Also, they are a bit pricy.
