Original review: I'm going to try and keep this review as objective as possible, instead of adding my normal color to the story. You can then decide for yourself if you want to work with Ideal Marine. Our port engine stopped working along the Intracoastal Waterway as we headed east from Ship Island to Alabama. It was smoking and spitting gunk out of the exhaust. When we were unable to resolve the issue we looked for an approved Volvo Penta Dealer. We called this one and the other one across Mobile Bay. The woman who answered the phone here confirmed there wasn't a dock at their facility but they could come by the next day if we got to a marina nearby. We had BoatUS tow us into a marina. When we called back that evening they didn't answer the phone. We called again the next morning and they said someone could see us around 10 am. When asked how much it would be we were told it depended on how long the mechanic was out. No mention of a minimum. When the mechanic came out he found a hose where the hose clamp was too tight. He cut and re-attached that hose. Then started the engine. When we tried to say that this didn't explain the gunk, or smoke coming out of the exhaust he said it was fine, and left. This happened in 10-20 min. When we went to stop the engine it set off alarms again. Ideal Marine called us to get our credit card to pay and then told us it would be $200+. When we asked why they said they had a 2-hour minimum. When we expressed that we didn't know that earlier and would have kept the mechanic out longer they got upset, and hung up on us. A mechanic who doesn't normally work on Volvo Penta engines came by after hearing about this incident and said he could hear the mis-fire from the dock. He opened up the engine and we ended up needing another 4 hours of work to get the issues resolved. The engine is no longer smoking or polluting the waterway. The approved Volvo Penta Mechanic from Ideal Marine didn't bother/wasn't able to fix those issues.
