I visited Dr. Kesar Bhatt June 8, 2026. This office is a joke! I went to her because they were my dental provider on my dental insurance. I made an appointment for a general cleaning with X-rays. We I arrived I was taken back and many X-rays were taken. I then met with Dr. Bhatt who proceeded to tell me that she could not clean my teeth and "that I was a liability to her license ". She said I needed a deep cleaning and some sort of filling/coating - each service costing $700! I have never had a cavity in my life! My last cleaning was Oct. 2025. I have always had my teeth cleaned every 6 months. Deep cleanings are for someone with very bad dental hygiene. This was a totally switch and bait. She submitted a bill for $1,500 to my insurance- $500 which is my responsibility! I never got my teeth cleaned. I simply walked out- after waiting 30 min. To have someone explain the costs of procedures the dr. Wanted to do. The following week I went to my local dentist - who did not take my insurance and paid the normal $345 for X-rays, cleaning and meet with the dentist for consultation. Downtown SD Modern Dentistry simply wants to get you in their chair and charge more. Beware!!! read more

DO NOT GO HERE EVER! I had a very frustrating and disappointing experience with this dental office. I was initially told that my out-of-pocket cost would only be $50, which I paid in full at the time of service. However, I was later contacted and told that I owed an additional $1,200--completely contradicting what I had originally been told. I made multiple attempts to resolve this directly. I called several times, left over five voicemails requesting a callback, and was even left on hold for 20 minutes without any resolution. My calls were consistently ignored, and no one made any effort to communicate with me. Despite my attempts to address the issue, they sent the bill to a collections agency without ever speaking to me. This is completely unacceptable and unprofessional. On top of that, I paid $1,600 out of pocket during my visits, and the quality of care was poor--they broke my bottom retainer, which I now have to repair elsewhere at additional cost. Overall, I am now out nearly $1,700, dealing with a collections notice, and left with dental issues that need to be fixed by another provider. This experience has been stressful, costly, and entirely avoidable if the office had simply communicated honestly and responsibly. I would strongly caution others before seeking care here. read more

I came from out of town on a visit. During that time a crown came off. I just needed it to be put back on and then I would have it checked by my dentist when I got back home. A couple in my building referred me to Downtown SD Modern Dentistry. Coming into the office, the receptionist was not overly friendly. In fact, none of the employees seemed happy to be there. Although I had entered all my medical information the day before into their on-line system, none of it showed up on their system for my appt. I waited at least 30 minutes after my scheduled appt. time before I saw the dentist. I told him I just needed the crown to be put back on my tooth and that I would be seeing my dentist when I returned home. Even so, he had x-rays taken and tried to get me to go through a whole process of having new crown constructed and installed that day. I told him again, "No. I would have my dentist take care of it when I returned home." Instead of the dentist reinstalling my crown, he had a dental assistant do it. She did not clean my tooth of any residue first. She only wiped off the crown. She did it all while standing up. She never had a chair to sit in. It is obvious the staff is never expected to spend much time with the patient. The dentist never returned to check the final installation of my crown.. Although I have 2 dental insurances, I still ended up paying an extra $58 out of pocket for a very minor procedure (if you can call reinstalling a crown a minor procedure). I asked that my x-rays be sent to my dentist. The dentist did not seem to know how to do that. The receptionist said he would email them to me. I still have not received them. I would be very fearful to have this dental office do any serious work on my teeth. This experience makes me very glad for the dentist I have. My suggestion when looking for a dentist, get one who owns and operates his or her own dental office. Look for one who has a happy staff who is glad to work there and has remained with that dentist for a long time. Get a dentist who is hands on and has high standards. Get a dentist who has ergonomically fashioned chairs in which to work on the patients. Look for a dentist who has a growing business. You can tell it is growing if they need to take on one or two or three other top dentists over time, and they go through a building remodeling project in order to provide even better care. read more

I would not recommend this dentist, or any practice within the Smile Generation network. My wife and I have used more than one of their offices and have had consistent issues that raise serious concerns about honesty, diagnosis accuracy, and billing practices. 1. Questionable periodontal diagnosis Prior to joining Smile Generation, my teeth had consistently been described by other dentists as exemplary in terms of hygiene. However, at more than one Smile Generation location in San Diego, multiple hygienists over a 2-3 year period diagnosed me with moderate to advanced periodontitis, citing numerous 4-5 mm pocket depths and even a 6 mm pocket, primarily on my rear teeth. Based on this diagnosis, I was placed on a periodontal maintenance program that included deep cleaning and quarterly visits, some of which were not fully covered by insurance. As recently as my final visit a month or two ago, I was again told these pocket depths persisted. I subsequently changed dentists to a community care facility. The dentist herself conducted the examination and found pocket depths of 2-3 mm throughout, with only one 4 mm reading and one 1 mm reading. She advised that a standard cleaning, fully covered by insurance, was sufficient, and did not support the prior periodontal diagnosis. 2. Deceptive crown practices I was told by a Smile Generation dentist that I needed a crown. The dentist stated they only perform same-day crowns and quoted approximately $1,000 out of pocket. When I pointed out that my insurance benefits clearly state a $375 copay for a ceramic or porcelain crown with a standard two-week turnaround, the office re-iterated the one-day crown procedure and produced a "limitations and exclusions" document that claimed that additional charges were allowed. The insurance coordinator told me that this was "the problem with insurance companies" and that there was fine print that customers don't get to see in the benefits document. I left without the work being done I opened a case with my insurance company. They confirmed that the dentist was contractually obligated to provide the crown I requested for the copay listed in my benefits. The "fine print" the dentist showed me was fabricated. When I returned to the practice to get the work done, the dentist again refused, repeating that he only does one-day crowns. I then called the insurance company's fraud department from the dental office. As soon as the insurance representative came on the line, the dentist immediately agreed to perform the standard 2-week turnaround crown procedure for the stipulated copay. 3. Billing Practices You are asked to sign a remote digital signature pad consenting to the procedure, which they don't show you voluntarily. Make sure you ask to see what you are consenting to. Both my wife and I have been caught out consenting to "add-ons" we weren't aware we were getting. Make sure you are aware of the co-pays your dental insurance specifies. We get overcharged pretty much every time we go in there, and have to dispute the bill. The last time I went in there, I was asked to pay a co-pay of $20 for the annual checkup, $40 for periodontal maintenance and $50 for fluoride treatment. I refused the periodontal maintenance and fluoride and refused to pay the $20 annual checkup co-pay, (it should have been $0) which they agreed to but warned me I was still liable for any charges. It doesn't stop at the front desk, either. Even after the insurance company processed the claim, and confirmed zero co-pay, I still got a bill from the dentist trying to charge me more. I then have to send proof from the insurance company that I owe nothing, which they should know because they get a copy. We find it incredulous. 4. Summary In my experience, this practice demonstrated: Highly inconsistent and questionable diagnoses. A strong pattern of up-selling unnecessary or more expensive treatments. Insurance representations that were contradicted by the insurer itself. Resistance to honoring contractual insurance obligations until confronted directly by the insurer. For these reasons, I would strongly caution others before using this dentist or any Smile Generation-affiliated practice. read more

She was told she would have to pay #2500.00 at delivery of dentures, only to find out she had to come up with $3600.00 additional for a total of $6100.00 today in order to get her dentures, when she was told she could make payments on the $3600.00. So no dentures, and we're out 3000.00 that we're out. These guys are crooks and I will see them in court!!!! read more

Worst experience! The receptionist was rude and inpatient from the moment I walked in. He made me feel unwelcome and uncomfortable. Very negative energy. I had asked if they wanted me to bring my X-rays before hand and he told me over the phone that it wasn't necessary but when i arrived he's treating me like I'm stupid for not bringing them. By the time I get called in I'm already feeling very unwanted and wanted to leave! I was told to sit elsewhere and wait for my other dentist to call me back and email the X-rays I have things to do and this is why I asked before coming so I decided to cancel my services. I came back to the front desk to ask for a refund he just looked at me with his nasty stare and said you should get it within two days. I just wasted my morning to have this terrible experience. This dental office is state of the art, my dentist was knowledgeable and articulate, but I question the quality of care. After my X-ray and examination, I got the following treatment plan. - deep cleaning on the left side - deep cleaning on the right side - and inlay for a cavity They refused to do a routine cleaning because I needed the deep cleaning I got 2 second opinions from other dental offices and found that I need a routine cleaning. One of the dentists called my treatment plan from Downtown SD Modern Dentistry "unethical". Do your homework and if you feel the treatment plan is excessive, get a second opinion. read more

Horrible experience here. The receptionists have zero customer service skills. The tech Erica who did my X-rays was very inexperienced and had a horrible beside manner. Once the dentist Dr Kaila saw me he tried to upsell me on a "laser deep cleaning." He noticed I needed a filling and left the tech to numb me, the tech numbed the wrong side of my face, so they had to also numb the other side the filling was actually on. The office came highly recommended by a coworker of mine. I had some dental health concerns, and I made an appointment. Upon arrival for my appointment, I waited in the waiting area for a few minutes while the front desk person attempted to help the patient in front of me. Unfortunately, I could not help but over hear the conversation between the patient in front of me and the front desk man. The gentleman in a wheelchair was asking the front desk person several questions about insurance and what they had been charged, etc. It was immediately apparent that the man at the front desk was extremely frustrated with the line of questioning from the patient. After a few minutes of attempting to find the answer to his questions, the patient was told by the man at the front desk that it was obvious that he was attempting to blame the office instead of the insurance company. Having shown up as a new patient, I can assure you I was shocked by this statement. I even took a photo of the of them at this moment, thinking that this approach from the employee was completely out of line. Shortly after, a young lady who was at the front desk said that she didn't normally work the front counter, but that she would get me checked in, and she did. I was shown a room and had a seat. The technician was wonderful and the doctor was wonderful. He proposed a plan of care and said that someone from the front desk would be in shortly to present a quote for the services. Jonathan came in from the front desk. He was the employee who was dealing with the patient in front of me upon my arrival. He quickly went over the proposal, and we agreed that I would do a deep cleaning same day and I would return for future services. The technician that did my deep cleaning was fantastic. When I was done, I was directed to the exit. I had an appointment scheduled with the Periodontist the following week. 3 days prior to this appointment for consultation with the Periodontist, I called the office to find out what I would need for this appointment. As this was a consultation with the Periodontist, I was fairly certain that I wasn't going to need much other than myself. Unfortunately, I had the misfortune of speaking with Jonathan again. I asked to verify what I would need to bring to the appointment I had scheduled. He asked me several times what I meant by "What do I need to bring?" I figured it was pretty obvious I was asking what the appointment was going to cost. Was there a copay, etc. He put me on hold for a few minutes and came back on the line and said I would need $1,300. He said the appointment was not for a consultation but for an actual procedure, to which I said I'm sorry that's not going to work because I will not have the funds for that. I told him that I needed to check something, and I would call back shortly to cancel the appointment, to which I did. I then asked him to send me the quote that he presented to me when I first arrived. He said sure he would email it shortly. I waited several hours and called back because I had not received it. I spoke with a young lady who apologized and said that those types of emails are only sent at the end of the day. I waited until the next day and still had not received the requested document. I sent a request using Smile Generation through mychart for the document again. 7 Days Later and I still had not received the document. I called today and unfortunately had to speak with Jonathan again. I explained my situation again, and I asked what the delay was in sending the document, and with the most insulting aggressive attitude, he said I'll send it in a minute. I asked him why it was not sent last week and why there was no response on my Smile Generation MyChart account, and he said, "I said I'll send it in a minute!" I began to tell him that I had witnessed how he had treated a patient in front of me in line when I first arrived and he loudly yelled at me to hold, and placed me on hold. Several minutes later, the call was picked up by Elena, who merely just picked up a call on hold and knew nothing about the situation. After explaining myself, she apologized and was able to assist. Unfortunately, the document that I received is not the document that I was presented in the chair when I first went. I am sure this can be rectified. I will not subject myself to poor treatment from Jonathan again. I have canceled all future appointments because of Jonathan and will be finding a new provider. read more

This was the most traumatic dentist experience I've ever had in my life. I got to the office for my 8am appointment and waited nearly 2 hours to be seen. Once Dr. Nice came over, he tried measuring my gums and said that my gums were too sensitive. So then, he put 4-6 numbing shots of local anesthesia in my mouth. Nobody explained to me how the numbing shots worked, they just left me alone waiting for an hour unable to feel the bottom half of my face. This caused me to have a full blown panic attack, so Dr. Nice came in and condescendingly explained that I'm okay and that my mouth is normal. He even told me to take Snapchat pictures of my mouth to assure myself I'm okay. This really pissed me off to have a dentist patronize me and tell me to go on Snapchat when I'm upset. It did the exact opposite of making me feel better, I don't like being treated like a 12 year old. Fast forward to finally getting my teeth cleaned. I was told that I have so much build up in my teeth that it could lead to gum disease, so the hygienist cleaned my teeth for another hour. She was actually pleasant and I appreciated her work, but I think they were completely disorganized with the whole process from start to finish. I have never received numbing shots for a basic cleaning in my life and I've also never been told that I have inflamed gums. Over 4 hours later, and the anesthesia still hasn't left. I feel humiliated and even more anxious about visiting the dentist than I was before. Oh also, it was $220 for a basic cleaning which I thought my HMO plan covered. Severely overpriced for such an awful experience. I won't be coming back and I'm truly scarred from this whole process. read more

I usually don't write Yelp reviews, but after my recent experience at Downtown SD Modern Dentistry, I felt like I needed to share. I've been a patient here for almost two years because the office is so nice and the initial reviews seemed great. However, my last two visits made me rethink my choice. While the office is modern and the staff are polite, every visit felt like relentless attempts to upsell me on various procedures. After receiving an examination and X-rays, I was given a treatment plan that included deep cleanings for both sides of my mouth with a laser treatment which was estimated to be approx 1,000+ out of pocket and felt pressured to finance with them in the office . I was told that a routine cleaning wasn't an option because of the severity of my gum inflammation. I consulted with two other dentists in San Diego after and neither agreed with the extensive treatments recommended by Downtown SD Modern Dentistry. I was assured by two other dentists in the area that I only needed a standard cleaning. If you're thinking about visiting this office, I highly recommend going somewhere else or at least seeking a second opinion before committing to any major expensive treatments. While the office itself is impressive, I can not and will not recommend Downtown SD Modern Dentistry based on my experience with their aggressive upselling and questionable treatment plans that in my experience seemed profit driven. read more

Do NOT trust them: I had a dental implant procedure completed back in September 2021. Prior to the procedure, I was told that I needed to pay up front, and then the office would bill my insurance. I reluctantly accepted and the procedure was a success. I paid nearly $1,800 in total for the procedure out of pocket and was told that the office would submit my claim to my dental insurance and they would refund the difference. Fast forward to December 2021. I received confirmation that my insurance would cover $1,400 of the total costs. I attempted to contact the office to provide them with this confirmation. I called over 150 times from December 2021 until June 2022. I kept getting the run around about the financial setup and payment methods, the manager not being in the office to approve, and the never ending saga. FINALLY, in October 2022, over an entire year of waiting, I received my $1,400. Please, for your sanity, do not go here. They do not respect you. They do not respect your time. I originally came to this office due to convenience since I lived downtown then and did not have to drive, but even after moving away I kept coming back due to the quality of the service. Anna is one of the best hygienist I've met. She is thorough but efficient. I've only met Dr. Andrade briefly a couple times, but she is friendly and easy to talk to. They have techs handling the Xrays and dental molds, etc, so usually the dentist consultation is pretty brief, followed by the hygienist. I also finally got my first night guard after decades of grinding. Unfortunately, when I picked it up, I saw a tech only and Dr. Andrade was not available to check the fit. It took about a month to get used to, and I am still waiting for an appointment to get it checked. Dr. Andrade and Anna canceled the last two appts I had, so I'm well overdue. This is a bit frustrating, but not enough to take off a star. Go early in the morning for easier street parking. Usually I am in and out under 2 hours, so metered parking worked fine. There seems to be a 1-2 months wait on routine appts, so book early. They have an online portal for your records. Prices are very reasonable, though I do have insurance coverage. Anything that will be out of pocket will be discussed with you by a coordinator before any service is rendered so that there are no surprises. My friends said that they spent about the same amount for a night guard elsewhere. Staff wears mask and face shields, and plenty of hand sanitizers available. Everything is spotless and definitely cleaned regularly judging by the alcohol/disinfectant smell. One thing to note, for those who are claustrophobic when it comes to dental offices, there are no doors to each exam room, but there are no windows either. read more

We will NOT return to complete the dental work we started. My wife was given a written estimate for a tooth extraction and graft and told that her co-pay after insurance would be $799. We have Delta Dental insurance coverage through Kaiser. The written estimate we have in hand was $799. The bill was presented to us as we were leaving and scheduling the follow-up appointment. The actual bill was $799 and we paid $799. All is good. Right? Wrong! A month later we received a bill for an additional $610. We called and asked why. Elana, the office manager, said she'd research it and get back to us the next day. She didn't. My wife called again a few days later and was again promised an explanation and return phone call. To date my wife has made 9 calls attempting to resolve the issue. We have NEVER received a call back. But every month we receive a bill for $610. Frustrated, we called Delta Dental who promised to research it. They get back to us the next day saying it was a coding error and said they would make sure the dental office made the correction. We keep getting a bill for $610. WTF? Finally we called Delta Dental again and this time were informed we were actually overcharged the first time and our co-pay should have only been $134. They looked at the actual coding and billing from the the dental office, not something we provided. Delta Dental said they would file a grievance for the wrong billing and the continued additional billing and we should expect a refund of $665, the difference between what we originally paid, $799, and what we should have paid, $134. Everybody makes honest mistakes. But this dental office showed zero effort to investigate, offered zero concern or follow through, lied 9 times about getting back to us and on top of that over charged us and then tried to bill us again without basis or explanation, AND THEY WERE WRONG. I'm sure they are not crooks, so they just must be grossly incompetent and rude. This is only my 2nd Yelp review ever, so you know this is really over the line for us. I rarely write Yelp reviews (good or bad) but felt compelled to post here as a warning. I have been visiting SD Modern Dentistry for nearly two years. The office is located conveniently close to my apartment and I did not see anything overly alarming in the reviews prior to my visit. While the office is nice, the team specializes in forceful sales tactics as they consistently try to upsell every procedure possible. In response to their most recent attempt, I visited two additional dentists for second opinions. I did not share with them the additional services the team at SD Modern Dentistry suggested I pursue (at least 7 times during my most recent visit, with 6 of them coming after I had turned the service down). Towards the end of the visits, I asked if the procedure recommended by SD Modern was necessary and they both assured me that to forcefully recommend such a treatment is borderline malpractice and without question not necessary. If you want to spend a lot of money unnecessarily and be pressured by members of the staff into opting into procedures, SD Modern is the place to go. I would not recommend this dentist to anyone and will not be visiting again. read more

My husband and I have been going here for years...until this morning. We have always had great results from the previous dentist (Dr. Christine Al-Khouri) but consistently bad issues with the front of the house (scheduling being cancelled on us the day of numerous times, etc). They have since changed the front office and Kristina is WONDERFUL - great attitude. HOWEVER.... Their new dentist Dr. GAIL HOFFMAN is horribly prideful and unethical. At first, my husband and I agreed she seemed very nice, cheerful, etc. Happy to see a younger woman dentist....great. So, during my annual checkup on 11/2/21, I scheduled to come back for a filling for an ongoing minor sensitivity issue that I could have honestly left alone. Fast forward...I got home from that second appointment on 11/16/21 and it hurt horribly after the numbing wore off. I decide to wait a day to see if it was just inflammation. It obviously wasn't because I could not brush my teeth on that side, so I took a look and there was a huge hole where there wasn't one before right where she did the work. I called in to explain the situation and that it actually hurt worse than before she did her work and scheduled to have it repaired ...again. Inconvenient to have to come in again, but no big deal in my head since this would obviously be fixed without charge. So I thought. They scheduled me for a revisit this morning 12/2/21. I go in and Dr. Gail Hoffman was extremely defensive and saying that it was a different filling that fell out and that can happen at any time to any person and for a bunch of reasons and she has no control over that. No &hit, Sherlock. I calmly explain that I am not accusing her of anything, but it would be an INCREDIBLE coincidence that a filling I have had for a decade falls out the same day she does the work on the tooth right next to it. I wasn't trying to get into who caused what, but explain that from a customer's perspective... I have had the filling for a decade without issue, I come in for work on the tooth next to it, and the filling adjoining falls out the same day. Dr. Hoffman goes on to say she would not have let me leave her office if it looked like it did now and she wasn't there to see when it fell out. I explain AGAIN that I called in that next day to explain what was happening. I don't think she would have knowingly broke my other filling and not say anything and hope for the best, BUT... It is almost certain that what she did caused my perfectly good filling to fall out when it wouldn't have. Any normal human being with common sense can figure that puzzle out. She went to the front to inquire on the cost to fix the tooth she damaged. Long story short...back and forth with them... she was not going to fix her mistake without charging me for fixing the filling she broke off. As Kristina explained to me in a drawn out diagram of what happened, during the procedure, Dr. Gail Hoffman placed a guard in between tooth #13 and #14 to protect my other tooth while she worked on the one next to it. The filling MAGICALLY broke off that afternoon. ORRRR, more obviously, putting that guard between my tooth caused the other filling to come out. I felt like I was in the twilight zone trying to explain this "possibility" to her. Kristina did not object to this and it was very obvious she was trying to tow the line on what she thinks is right/ethical thing to do (for the dentist to fix what she caused no charge to me) but having to explain that she cannot make the dentist do anything she does not want to do. I felt for her. The business owners should know.... you brought Kristina in to turn things around. She is doing her best. I feel so bad for her, as it is obvious she takes pride in her work and the reputation of the business. Unfortunately, the shady dentistry practices of Dr. Gail Hoffman will be your downfall. I have additionally placed a complaint at the California Board of Dentistry and you have lost my husband and my business of several years...even through all the billing and scheduling issues we have had over the years. It is not like I couldn't afford the $80 copay to fix the other cavity, but it is completely unethical to charge me for damage she caused and to collect my $80 AND all teh money the insurance would give her. Love my new dentist, the staff are friendly and you know your visit costs upfront. Unlike my old dentist who upsold products and procedures that were excessive and not needed, they create a plan that's appropriate and based on your needs and priorities. They wants what's best for you, not their profits and I love that! Highly recommend! I also love being able to schedule online and view my chart using their app! read more

My experience at this dentistry was on the negative side. And here are the reasons - schedule operator had to push my appt for an hour due to mistake, which was okay, it happens to the best of us - waited for 30 mins in the lobby before getting seen by a technician - The technician didn't seem to want to be there. She was not very gentle with my mouth either - waited 40mins before getting seen by a dentist - it took 2 hours for a teeth cleaning session - kept on receiving promo emails from them despite digitally unsubscribing then calling My very personal feeling about this place is they are extremely commercial. IMO you won't find a better dental office than Downtown SD Modern Dentistry. It's state-of-the-art technology. I went in at 3pm and left at 5:40pm with a new crown that was expertly designed & comfortable. You won't find a better dentist than Dr. Al-Khouri. She is super-smart, very skilled, knowledgable, and explains everything with wonderful clarity. After determining what I needed, a list of options was presented to me, complete with what my benefits plan would pick up. The entire end-to-end experience couldn't have been better. They are clearly committed to process design, whereas other offices just let it happen. STAY AWAY! Jonathan Privus is SO rude, literally a receptionist and had the audacity to raise his voice and yell at me when he lied about doing his job the previous day. I had called and stated I need to speak with someone that can help with an insurance claim, he put me on hold and came back and said the manager was in a meeting and would call me back. They never called back so I went in person and tried to see if someone could help. Jonathan was still there and said that I never called but when I brought up my phone calls he later changed his answer and said "I said she was with a client not in a meeting and I never said she would call back"... why would I hang up if they weren't going to call me back??? Nothing was resolved. So the lady next to him pitched in and said that she will take this on and try to get me an answer about the claim and would need to call me back tomorrow. Now it's tomorrow end of day and still hadn't heard back so I go back in and ask if they have any updates. Jonathan is the only one there and doesn't look up from his computer or greet me and is very sarcastic and rude when he says "the manager is off today" I asked if there was anyone else that could help, he said "no I said the manager was off today she's allowed a day off" I said okay but why would she say she was going to call me today if she was off and her jacket and stuff was on the desk. He continued to say she was out and that there was no else there and raised his voice told me to "get out" so I left and approximately 20 minutes later I received a call... guess who it was lol... it was the female manager saying she was sorry she missed me she was "just on lunch"... DO NOT TRUST THIS PLACE. I resisted the urge to post this review because I was so upset when I realized I even needed to, I fought using my energy because I'm not one to post bad reviews but I think it's important for people to know this. I was funneled directly to this location by my insurance (which I have since cancelled completely since this happened). Everyone was very friendly and nice in the office, I was extremely nervous because it has been a few years since going to a dentist (due to the price) and I was worried it would be an expensive experience. I was somewhat prepared for some type of investment (maybe $1000) because I knew I had some cavities. The appointment when fine until I was quoted a price. almost $5000.00 worth of work was quoted to me, told that it was very important and that they would make the time for me right then and there. With the insurance it was almost $1900.00. In the moment I trusted them and felt like "wow maybe I should just do it now and take the hit" but luckily I had a gut feeling that I needed to sit on this. So they reassured me they would be available for whenever I was ready for this 5 thousand dollar work and I went home. I started to become really worried about the cost, even at 1800.00 that's a lot for me. I had previously had a dentist who I trusted but couldn't afford to go to because they didn't take insurance. My intuition told me to get a second opinion so I called the trusted dentist and asked if he would let me come in and pay just an exam fee to look over this paperwork and my mouth and give me second opinion. He was SHOCKED. He helped me go through the paperwork to understand what all this work does and told me what he thought was actually necessary, which was a fraction of what was put on this estimate. To get the work done at the trusted dentist WITHOUT insurance it was $700! $700 when this place estimated me for almost $5000. I am so disgusted by the attempt to take advantage of me. My lack of understanding this paperwork, what was needed and what is actually necessary and the fact that they were so confident with me that I almost said okay to the work on the spot. It clear they know what they are doing and my biggest issue is that I was sent here directly from my insurance. I pictured what it would look like to someone who struggled even more than I did, finally getting insurance and feeling the way I did and getting that estimate and maybe paying it out of shame for having neglected going sooner. How many elderly people or innocent clients come here and pay these crazy estimates because they trusted the situation. It's WRONG. I filed a complaint with blue cross california to let them know this is who they are sending these people who finally could afford to get insurance. This review was prompted by an email notifying me that the place is under new ownership, however i'm pretty sure the new owner was the man who did my exam and gave me this quote. My advice is to go somewhere else because this place cares about upcharging you if they smell the opportunity, don't be a victim of this place. read more

I will be taking me and my family's business elsewhere. I had an amazing experience with Dr. Al-Khouri, but have had an unacceptable experience with Dr. Spencer Nice. My daughter had a loose tooth that was giving us concern because she hadn't been brushing it well, as well as the tooth next to it. They were literally caked in tartar. We brought her in and he said it was completely normal and there was no need to clean anything. Fast forward a month, the tooth is still loose, and the tartar is even worse. We scheduled another appointment, and Dr. Nice again said everything was normal. He pulled the loose tooth out, but there was still what we thought was a tooth covered in tartar. I told him to clean her teeth, I'll pay extra, I don't care. His response, "I'll clean them really quick". What's the rush, man? My 6-year old daughter is your patient -- give her the time and respect she deserves. He "cleaned" a little bit, but there was still a huge buildup of tartar. We decided to see another dentist. Within 10 minutes of seeing the new dentist, he had removed the tartar. It turns out the tartar was not on a tooth, but rather just a tower of tartar, growing out from another tooth. He removed it with a few quick strokes of his instrument. Why Dr. Nice couldn't make this same evaluation and do this same quick fix is beyond me. Either he was too busy and didn't care enough to do this job properly, or he's a fraud. It's a bummer, because I liked the staff at Downtown Modern Dentistry, I had a great experience with Dr. Al-Khouri, as well as the hygienist who did a deep cleaning for me earlier this year. Dr. Al-Khouri took a leave of absence when COVID lockdown happened, so my guess is they were struggling to find a new dentist to take her place, and they settled on Dr. Nice. My experience with him and my daughter was completely unacceptable, and he's not someone I can trust for another second with my or my family's dental health. read more

I always have a really nice experience with doctor Gail Burgess. She's always so friendly and attentive, half of my veneer chipped off and they were able to take me first thing next day and fixed it so quickly. Receptionists and nurses are all nice too. Definitely recommend this clinic! read more

Not to be trusted. Terrible cleanings, bs from everyone- used car salesman with prices - scaling- ( which btw, my 2nd opinion said my gums were fine!) gave me a price - but that was only half the mouth- negated to make that clear - next visit was close to 2 thou- then they gave me another price. I said no then" tell you what we can do -$ 375. How does that sound. During a Covid break gal greeter me no mask. I commented she said she forgot - a waste of my time! Really terrible experience here. They tried to give me fillings, but I didn't have cavities - and when I tried to ask them why they were suggesting fillings the dentist became angry. Stupidly, I went back a second time, and this time they tried to force me to have a gingivitis treatment that they were advertising on their walls. I've found another dentist who is not crooked and who makes recommendations based on my dental needs, and will never return here. I'm considering reporting them for unethical dentistry, actually! First impressions are everything and this place, despite its fancy facade, and cool tech, is lacking in all areas of competency, organization, friendliness and transparency. The dentist and hygienist were great! I would go back if they replaced their entire front office team. The woman at the front desk does not know how to use the system, was not friendly and after initially explaining to me a payment plan, they did the work, then informed me as I was checking out of a credit check that would have to be done. All of which should have been handled prior to the dental work being performed. No one wants to hang out waiting for people to learn their job... while I am trying to get back to mine after taking time off work. read more

I went in for a cleaning and X-rays were taken. I was then told I needed a new crown in a molar because of decay! I went to my regular dentist for confirmation and he said that it was false - there were shadows NOT DECAY! This facility was trying to get me to purchase their insurance and get a new crown!
