We've stored our stuff here for nearly 3 years and have been extremely happy with the security and service. It's in an ideal location - just off the freeway so if you have a U-Haul you don't have to navigate too many city streets. Plus they have several loading docks to accommodate any amount of stuff. With any storage facility the biggest concern is security. And this place is locked up tight. The entrance is like a command center with TVs and monitors. It's staffed from open to close and everyone has to sign in and out. That's awesome. Once you're inside, there are cameras everywhere and all the windows are wired to an alarm system. There's probably a few security snipers in the rafters - but don't quote me on that. read more

I highly recommend Johnson's if you live downtown. The people are so nice and helpful and my unit was perfect for storing my collection of ski, water, and art stuff. I was within 3 blocks and could easily walk to grab stuff or drive over. The bays are easy to access or the 13th loading dock for big stuff. There's Parking Kitty on 13th across from the loading dock. Johnson's is a welcoming place in a very cool brick building. There's restroom availability and a large freight elevator for upper floors. P.S. Kure is across the street for a killer smoothie after a crazy move! read more

I've been storing things here for over two years now. The staff is always helpful and friendly. The place is clean and I feel my belongings are as secure as they can be. Sometimes parking and access is a bit of an issue. But that can't really be helped because it's located in the Pearl on Johnson and 13th. The location is close to me and the prices are very reasonable. I will continue to store here. I'm really pleased with them. read more

Overall, the staff are friendly and they made things fairly easy. I ended up asking a lot of questions and they even ended up answering a few I wouldn't have thought of. It's a bummer that they've taken on a policy that won't allow you to get refunded if you plan to move your items out at the beginning of the month. That seems like such an outdated policy for these times and honestly makes me think they're just not getting enough business if they have to charge people for a full month they're not using the unit (and they have to keep it empty). Either, they need the money or they're okay with turning away the business if someone were in need of that empty unit. Both do not reflect well on a business. Moving truck was easy to back in. Space was clean. Staff are friendly and willing to answer questions. It would have been nice to get a verbal warning about the payment policy so that way I could coordinate moving items out. read more

Very friendly service! I've been a customer for over a decade and am finally getting around to writing a review. The place gets a solid A+ for cleanliness, organization and competent friendly staff. I can always count on them being there with a friendly greeting and a spotlessly clean loading and hallway area. If anything is amiss - like yours-truly-the-knucklehead forgetting to lock his locker, they will put a secondary lock on it when shutting down for the night, and call/email to let you know. I greatly appreciate that the staff sends timely emails and is always very professional with their paperwork and receipts. The building itself is quite nice with covered and secure loading area, heavy brick walls, climate control, excellent security and very well maintained doors and elevators. The staff sweeps, mops and cleans it on a continuous basis all day - the bathrooms are spotless and the floors always fresh swept. read more

I had a unit here for over three years that I used for both work and personal storage. The only reason I had to leave was due to a personal move that allowed me to store my items at home. The staff is friendly, attentive and always willing to help. Even when I desperately needed to get into my space and the elevator was being serviced, a member of the staff personally walked down the stairs carrying a very heavy item for me. We had a storage unit with Downtown Self Storage for many years. There was a leak when we moved in that the manager attempted to fix. However, when we moved out, we found that there was significant water damage to our belongings. On top of that, we had a rodent problem even with regular placement of mouse/rat bait. Over half of our boxes were infested. There were feces and urine stains on many of our fabric goods, some of which were so bad they had to be tossed. The customer service is awful, with the exception of Jeremy (who is a gem and frankly I don't know why he works there as his talents are wasted on this business). We had a house break-in and our credit cards were stolen. When we went into the unit a couple of months later, the manager told us that we had late fees associated with the card not going through. When we asked why he did not call us to get a different credit card number, the manager said that an email was sent out to notify us. We never received that email and when we discussed this with him and asked for the fees to be reversed due to the burglary he said he would not do it. We also have a storage unit in Washington. In the same situation with the stolen card, they called us to get a new credit card number and did not charge us a fee to do this. This is good customer service. To top everything off, we had to call multiple times to request a refund check for the balance they owed us when we moved out. Jeremy came to the rescue to get this taken care of, but it took three calls to get it done. This storage facility is in such a good location that the staff and business practice policies do not have to be good. They have no competition, so who knows if they will up their game to improve their disinterested and lack luster customer service. We recommend you go elsewhere. read more

I'm becoming an expert at moving and storage, I don't see an end in sight. Fortunately, I have chosen Downtown Self Storage on Johnson. I never thought I'd say this about storage but I really enjoy being there. The staff make me feel welcome, the place is incredibly well kept in an historic building, always clean, warm and safe. In the past few years I've used at least 8 storage units in three cities, at least four of which were at my absolutely favorite, this one. Movers with giant rigs, private cars, me and my roller cart on foot,,,,whatever we need, we are accommodated. I'm down to one unit now and making no promises it will be my last. Arrived at store 10 minutes before closing to buy boxes. Employee would not let me in. When I told him I was just there to buy boxes and that they didn't close for another ten minutes, he responded by telling me that they in fact closed ten minutes before the posted closing time. If I had showed up ten minutes before closing to rent a storage unit I'd understand, but to turn a customer away who just wants to buy boxes ten minutes before closing time--that's just lame. read more

We were looking for storage space in Portland and thought we'd give this place a look. Price on par with most other storage companies, about $70-75 per month for a 5x10 space. Coupon available on their website. Allison, the staff member who helped us was very nice and down to earth. They even gave us a $5 Starbucks gift card for stopping by to look. Cons: Old, old building. Not much parking available. No place to park the u-pack pod for a couple of days without getting a permit from the City. I realize that's pretty typical for a downtown establishment, but I'd rather invest somewhere a little less spooky (dark, old dingy units) with better access. read more

The staff is always super friendly and helpful; Jesse in particular has been incredibly kind and overly accommodating with me and he is someone I look forward to seeing every time I visit. For the location you cant beat the price! Facility is clean and staff is friendly (even with me being the queen of breaking glass). Really with they had better hours and I'd be sold as a long time customer. Was skeptical about the few spots for loading and unloading but honestly NEVER had an issue. And the sign in thing was odd, well basically a new thing to me. But I do understand having a business blocks away that it was merely for customers security and can't knock on them trying to help. Have used this place for about 5 months so far and have no issues. Living in the Pearl or any downtown location usually means smaller spaces and if you need storage, this is a perfect spot. Easy to get in and out of. I can usually pull into the loading dock easily and if not there are reserved spots across the street. Yeah the building is old but everything works, is clean, and well maintained. I don't think it is creepy at all and the staff is very friendly. read more

The place is CRAZY CLEAN which is amazing to pull off for a storage complex. I love the staff, they are all so nice and kind and helpful. I had been ill and informed the company that the payment was on the way, on the day of sending payment. I always send my payment priority mail and as luck would have it, the priority mail was 3 days instead of the sometimes 2 days until receipt. I was charged a $20 late fee and sent that $20 along right away because the tone was very disagreeable about having $20 in their hands within 6 days. ( From the implication of their threat I wonder whether they have commandeered my stuff) I do not recommend these people and their capricious disabling of the convenience of online payments. In all honesty, this last month has been an anguishing RIP-OFF and I am planning to vacate my unit within a few weeks. Speaks volumes: how difficult it was to find a review site that did not involve an overabundance of personal information. Sig Heil! read more

We are very impressed with this storage unit facility, it's always clean and well managed. With it being downtown parking and access can be a challenge, however we have not have any issues getting access. I like the fact that it is well lit there are no dark spaces or corridors. read more
