My main problem with this place has more to do with the staff. While some of the people working here are friendly, the majority are grumpy at best, and often quite rude. Now, I get it, dealing with drunks and college kids all day is not the ideal job, but for those of us just stopping by for a bottle of wine after work don't need to be treated like the former. There have been many times at the till where I'll say something like, 'hi, how are you?' only to be answered with a 'got an id?' It's just a little frustrating. I'm a friendly fellow, these folks are not. I'm taking my business elsewhere. The staff here is super friendly! My fav wine is a Gewurtz, and I didn't look hard enough to find one, but settled on a riesling from the Germany section instead. When I mentioned to the cashier that I couldn't find any Gewurtzs in the Germany section, he told me that those are on the other side of the shelf, in the Austria section. He was knowledgeable about wine and even complimented me on the one I had chosen! It made me realize that if people stroked my ego about my purchases more often, I'd probably be purchasing from them more often. After reading the reviews of this place I realized that I had the same experience as Romulo. I am traveling to Italy and wanted to try some really good Italian wine. I was totally ignored by this tall gentleman who appeared annoyed that I had entered his store. When I mentioned I was looking for a good bottle of wine. He looked at me and walked away. I walked around for a few minutes and realized he was intent on ignoring me. If I own is shop I dismiss this clerk immediately. I then went to Kappy,s and was treated as a valued customer and purchased half a dozen fine Italian wines. I would never return to this creepy place. read more

It is the only packy in Davis Square, but it's a great store nonetheless. Great selection of foreign and domestic cold beers and a museum-like collection of imported bottled beers. Nice selection of wines and if they don't have it, they'll order it for you. The staff is pretty knowledgeable. Ask for the manager, Alan, if yiou have questions about wine. The only draw-back is their slightly inflated prices but the selection makes it worth it. Open from 11-11, 7 days/wk. Bigger than youd expect. Lots of selection and average prices. The wines are at the front of the store (the interior is kind of like this reverse L-shape) and the beer/other alcohol is kind of to the side of the store, at the bend of the "L." I haven't been to may liquor stores so I don't really know how this place compares, but I really have to say that this place has really good service. They were super helpful in helping me pick out a wine for a special occasion. I just told the wine guy what I was planning on eating and he showed me wines from different regions and explained how each region's grapes typically taste compared to each other. Really informative and helpful, and they weren't pushy about trying to get me to purchase the most expensive bottle, which I appreciated. I ended up buying a bottle of french wine, which I've never tried before, and I really enjoyed it! Went really well with the soft cheeses I was having. I will definitely be back. read more

Best beer selection that i know of. I don't know a thing about wine but they seem very helpful if you have any questions. They don't have a huge selection of liquor but again more then make up for it in the beer selection. I love how they set up the beers on the shelves by countries, and they always seem to be open till 11 on sundays and holidays for people like me who forget about the important things in life. read more

They are humble as well-- while looking for a certain kind of Czech beer that they didn't have, the staff member suggested another store where I could probably find it-- this speaks volumes to me about them being more interested in you finding your beer than getting your money. I went to Belgium in January to a place with 2,000 beers and I was surprised to find that when I came back and went to Downtown (which is the closest liquor store to my house), they had most of my favorites that I had tried!! (I did NOT try all 2,000.) Belgian imports ARE expensive, but what can you do about that on this side of the pond? The beer selection here is just killer, and they have a bunch of "wine and spirits," too. I've always had friendly service, and I enjoy that there are beer pong balls displayed in the plastic case at the front next to all of the cute lil nips. An all around winner. read more

Once you walk in the door you can tell this place takes spirits seriously. There's even a tasting bar in the back. The selection is without doubt the best I've ever seen. But it's once you walk into the craft brew area, you can see a true temple built to hops and barely. Their wine selection is a bit limited - what they have is decent but they don't have the range that the Cask has. Still - good enough selection and enough offerings in the $15 and under range. I've watched this store blossom over the years, from a sticky floored liquor store, where college kids get their 30-racks, to the beautiful tabernacle to alcohol that now exists. They've expanded their wine selection to a range of lower, mid and upper priced selection, and it's nice to see the bottles, and not the layer of dust from 3 years ago. Their bourbon selection is seriously impressive. I WOULD however, like to see more scotch diversity, but I appreciate the bourbon thing that they have going. Overall: good times. Best staff and selection in the ville and it has a parking lot which is unheard of in New England's most densely populated and most badass city. Dan and his whole crew are cool, laid back and really know their stuff and for being in the heart of Davis Sq its cheaper than most Somerville package stores, which is quite the feet. They constantly have different wine, beer and booze tastings and they need to with all the crazy and unique selections they have. This is a great wine store, with a great selection and very helpful salespeople. My only reason for not giving five stars is that their prices are high. I frequent a number of wine stores near where I live and where I work, so I am familiar with many labels and prices. Invariably, any bottle of wine you see at Downtown Wine & Spirits will cost you from $2-$5 more than anywhere else. Decent selection but terrible customer service and high prices. They sell a lot of good beers but be careful because that Maharaja or Sculpin IPA that you want nice and fresh might be a year old. I have been here a few times out of convenience but wont be going back. At this past year's "Porchfest" (a Somerville festival where over 150 bands perform on sponsor's porches, yards, driveways, etc.) we stopped in here to re-load our beer supply. I went around the backside of the building to sit in the shade and give my pup some water. When my friends who went in to the store came back out with the beer we opened the 30-pack we had just bought and began loading it into backpacks we were using to transport supplies for the day. Just as we were about to finish, two employees - one whom I presume to be the manager - come out and start swearing at us to "get the #*&% out of there". The dude literally lost it without any provocation. Perhaps he was under the impression that we were going to be hanging out in the parking lot all day and consuming the beers we just bought from them (which clearly wasn't the case) - but even still, that isn't the way you should treat your customers. Kindly ask us to leave and remind us that we cannot drink outside in public in Massachusetts - perfectly reasonable. Jump to conclusions and start screaming and swearing at a group of customers - not the way to handle things. Ironically enough, there were two lawyers and an NYPD officer within the ranks of our small group, not as if that matters, but we were clearly not a bunch of vagrants. We immediately went on our way and I simply told the gentleman that he would be losing my business, I hope that this review will make others reconsider as well. Ball Square Fine Wines is close by with better prices and superior customer service - plus you might catch a craft beer, wine, or spirit tasting over there! read more

I don't get why this liquor store gets so many positive reviews...maybe because it's the only main liquor store in Davis Square?? I will say that their beer selection is good. However, their wine selection is lacking. I can never find a good 'value' wine there, like I can at Ball Sq. Fine Wines or at Dave's. The thing that annoys me most about this place is some of the employees, who can be kind of rude. The last time we were in there, their machine wouldn't read my boyfriend's debit card, which is relatively new (no more than 6 months old). The employee ringing us up proceeds to tell us that he needs to get a new debit card because their machine ALWAYS works, which is false because we have run into this same issue at Downtown Wine & Spirits before, but NOWHERE else. To top it off, the employee didn't even offer us a bag for 2 bottles of wine/liquor and two 6 packs. We won't be returning here again...there are far better places in Somerville to get good beer and wine. read more

i went here for the first time yesterday. i always walk by when i'm in davis. but i never think that it has anything cause it looks pretty tiny. well, ya know what? i was so wrong about this. they have a ton of random beers there. which i totally love. they sell many by the bottle. and i even found my rogue hazelnut which i couldn't find at kappy's or atlas liquors! i am definitely heading back there at some point to check out the other beers that they have in stock. read more

Came in to buy a keg and the dude at the counter was a real jerk. When I asked how many beers were in the half, quarter or sixth kegs he didn't have an answer and acted like I shouldn't have asked the question. So I rephrased the inquiry and asked how many gallons were in said barrels. Again, I was treated like I had asked a ridiculous question. After googling it myself to determine which keg I should buy, I made my selection. I then asked if they rented out or sold keg tubs to keep the beer cold on ice. Homie looked at me like I had sprouted horns and said "What do you mean? We keep our beers in the freezer here. They are already cold." So I tried explaining to him that I wanted to keep the kegs that way and was just looking for a way to keep them on ice. I then said every party with a keg I had ever been to had a keg on a tub of ice. He told me he didn't know what kind of parties I attended but that a tub of ice to keep your keg cold on a hot day, outside, wasn't necessary. I left not knowing if Mr. Unhelpful was being purposefully obtuse or if that was just his natural state. read more

Every time I walk into this place I walk away disappointed. The selection is incredible, the prices are good, I love the music playing, the selection is great, and the staff walking around the floor is very helpful and friendly. It's checkout time that gets me down. I can't recall a single time when I've had a positive encounter with the cashier. Davis Square is a fun place to hang out, but the cashiers at Downtown Wines & Spirits are too cool, or hip, to do anything more than ask for your ID and give you your change, or ask for a signature. I wish it was more like a gas station where I could pay up front and get it over with and then walk away happy. read more

The manager refused to let me buy alcohol on my 21st birthday. I tried to buy a bottle of the wine I drank with my girlfriend on our first date, but the manager wouldn't let me because my friend couldn't produce a photo ID (I had taken to Harvard on the T the day before to replace his bank card after he lost his wallet). They closed the store immediately after I left (before 11 o'clock when their sign says they close), and I couldn't buy the wine for our trip to Canada the next morning. I'm never going back and I would advise anyone reading this to stay away. read more
