Had the brisket and ribs with a side of slaw and fries. Everything was really good. Especially liked the slaw, great oil/vinegar dressing with peppers and pickled red onions. The fries have a really good tasting seasoning on them, just could have used another minute in the fryer. Service was very fast and friendly. I was there recently for lunch. I ordered a brisket sandwich on rye. It is described on the menu as "Smoked & sliced beef brisket served on rye with grainy mustard, pickles & dusted onions. Served with choice of fries, sweet fries or slaw." It was what it said it was, but for 18., I expect more than one slice of brisket. The brisket was not the worst but far from the best I've had. The fries were plentiful but over done. Service was slow but it was busy. Not going back. read more

The server here was really friendly and accommodating. The food: I liked how everything, including all the sauces were homemade. The restaurant food feels like everything's grilled by your uncle and prepared by your grandma, which is a good thing. A lot of the seasoning tasted a little more on the sweet side, which was surprising since I expected it to be really strong, salty and flavorful. The appetizer that the server recommended was pretty good. It was a baked pastry with pears which was sweet also. Because everything was on the sweet side, I expected the dessert to be really good so I ordered the cheesecake and banana pudding but it did not meet expectations. We dropped in on our way through Peterborough, looking for another restaurant that we had heard about (it was closed) so we happened upon this restaurant a couple of blocks over, in the downtown core. They don't look nearly as good on the outside as they do inside (from the street) but don't let that deter you. The interior is bright and spacious, with a nice bar on the one end, and lots of booths and high-tables around the room. These folks are serious about their BBQ !! They have a full sized-smoker going full-blast / full-time in the parking lot. The menu is large with lots of choice - chicken, ribs, wings, brisket, pulled pork, some of the thickest burgers I've ever seen !! They also list several platter choices. The food was excellent and the portion sizes generous. The staff were very friendly and the service was excellent (we were served by Kiera). Highly recommended !! read more

Well Dr. J's is my go to spot for all things BBQ in Peterborough. Their Ribs are wonderful and fall off the bone, their wings are the best in town, and they make a wicked Pulled pork sandwich. The thing that makes them real special is their Mac n' Cheese, it is by far the best I've ever had. They also make pretty good beans though I'm not one for beans. read more

We were visiting Canada for the first time from NC and our friends suggested this place because I was craving bbq (since it's my fav!) We ordered the largest meal for four, drove to pick it up and hurried back home because we were so hungry. Our order was wrong; we were missing brisket AND pulled pork and the cole slaw. I immediately called to see about getting the rest of our food. We had received wings and salad which we didn't order. The nice man (I should've asked his name) offered to bring it to us! We still didn't get our cole slaw but that's ok. It was delish! I've had quite a bit of true southern bbq and these guys have brought it all the way to Canada!! Their sauce was also fantastic! Up here from New York. I have been fortunate to travel and try some good and not so good bbq. This place is a gem. Peterborough is lucky to have a place like this. The brisket is fantastic and the pulled Pork is right up there with It. Pulled pork can go sideways quick and be dry. Not this place. Had the nachos, wings and the half and half brisket/pulled pork. Don't sleep on the wings. Great beer selection as well. Only bad part about this place is I live 500 miles away. Definitely gonna be on our list when we come back up. This place was recommended to me and I thought Id try it out. Nice vibe. Great menu. I decided to try the pulled pork sandwich and upgrade to the smoked beet salad. Nice presentation. The pork had nice flavor but was cold. 2 small slices of Jalapanos and just enough fillings to cover the bun unfortunately it wasnt loaded up nicely. Beet salad was very good. Smoked beets were nice. Good place to eat, it's got a great vibe. I'm pretty sure I got a new bartender the first time I went. I ordered a couple long island ice teas and got very drunk lol. The next visit I ordered same but dissapointly didn't have the same effect! Good food though. The interior is very homey and the service is nice!! Been here a few times and generally the food is good and nicely flavoured, but it's almost always served lukewarm. Nothing worse than any cooked meat served barely warm. My daughter had the eggplant lasagna and it was served cold, as though it had just come out of the fridge. Every special occasion in our house ends up at Dr. J's. It's always got delicious offerings and good beer - we haven't had a bad meal ever! Occasionally they will be out of something we want to order but we chalk it up to it being so popular and there are lots of other yummy things to order. We had a party of 5, we all got different things and everyone enjoyed their meal except the person who chose the catfish taco (her first time having catfish and thought it was too fishy). The food is plentiful, no appetizers needed. My beef brisket and pulled pork combo platter was excellent. My husband's Can't decide platter was good but he thoroughly enjoyed the ribs the most (his brisket was a tad dry). Everyone who got the beans thought they were delicious.
