This place is very very good. I feel like not many people know about this place because whenever we eat in it is always empty. I think most of their customers order two out. I really enjoy the food here and the restaurant and service is usually pretty good. The thing that makes this a four star review is the consistency . Usually when we eat in the food is quick and excellent. Recently though, when taking out, the food was not as good as previous take out experiences. It was still tasty but some of the dishes were not as tender, under or over salted, and the sauce was super thick and gloppy. If you have children, you've had frozen chicken strips in your home. I do, and have, and know what their flavor is. That said, I ordered takeout from Dragon Inn this weekend, in particular the sesame chicken. The frozen chicken strips flavor could not be hidden despite the sesame brown sauce! I realize chicken is expensive these days, but this is inexcusable from a restaurant, it's not even trying. I will NEVER order from them again, and would encourage others to avoid this restaurant. Working here in Raleigh, stopped in at dinner, just as they opened. Ordered the dumpling soup, one dumpling and broth. Also ordered the steamed dumplings, more like steamed empanadas, no flavor. Ordered the combination lime in, noodles seemed to be over cooked making the noodles mushy, asked for spices, did not get and very bland flavor, no vegetales in the dish at all. Actually couldn't even eat it. My hubby ordered the orange beef, he enjoyed it with fried rice. Too sweet flavor for me with zero spices. Not one of my best choices in restaurants. Since I needed a few meals, I ordered a handful of dishes: hand made wontons (RUBBERY), crab Rangoon (HARD), and the sesame chicken dinner combo (SWIMMING IN SAUCE, TASTELESS EGG ROLL, NOT THE FRIED RICE I ORDERED). And to top it off, took over an hour to get to me when max was to be 40 min AND was not even warm. I took a few bites and dumped it all in the garbage. A waste of $51!!! "Szechuan and other Chinese food on Guess Rd in Durham" Nestled in a strip shopping center with "Ollie's" and Italian Pizzeria is this little gem. We came on a Saturday night with a group of 5. The restaurant is fairly brightly lit and welcoming. There were a few other customers, but not many. The menu had Chinese-American restaurant staples (e.g., sesame chicken and the like) as well as a few Szechuan dishes. I went for the spicy eggplant. We shared an order of crab rangoon, and others at m table ordered sesame tofu, a seafood hotpot, and a dish with shiitake mushrooms and baby bok choi. We were brought a pitcher of water for the table, which was nice so we had it as we needed it. Each dish came with a choice of white or fried rice. One nice thing I saw-- you had the choice of chicken fried rice, and the eggrolls (which we didn't order) were also chicken-- good for non-pork eaters. We liked our food overall. My spicy eggplant was absolutely delicious-- perfectly cooked japanese eggplant and seasoning. It was quite mild to my taste-- not really that spicy overall-- but I was looking for flavor over heat so I didn't mind. My son really liked his seafood hotpot-- it had surprisingly little liquid but a mountain of seafood (fake crab meat, fish balls, and more) and tofu in it. My daughter liked the sesame tofu-- I had a bite and it was fine. The crab rangoons were good/ pretty typical. The least popular (but still OK) dish was the mushroom & bok choi... it was oddly slimy and not wonderfully flavored, but again it was still OK. Don't think any of us will order that again in the future, but it was worth trying. The only negative was the pacing of the meal, though this was partly our fault. We didn't get our dishes at the same time, and the polite among us let their dishes get cold waiting for the other dishes to arrive. There was perhaps a 10-15 minute gap between the first and last dish arriving (and weirdly the appetizer came after the hotpot). This all would have not been a problem if we were eating "family style" with everyone sharing dishes as they arrived, but we instead ordered individual dishes, so this was less than ideal (again, partly our fault). Price was fair-- came to roughly $80 before tip. Given this fed 5 of us, and we had some leftovers to take home, that's pretty reasonable. Given Gourmet Kingdom in Carrboro is a bit of a hike for those of us in North Durham, this is a decent option for some Szechuan or other Chinese food in the area-- good chance we'll come back and try more on the menu. read more

Our usual Chinese restaurant of over 15 years had hired a new cook and things have gone way downhill. So we've decided to try some places we haven't been to before using Yelp reviews. We landed here for Christmas even though it's on the other side of town. I actually used to dine at this location many years ago, but I believe it was called something else and maybe different owners. Anyway, we were seated by a not so friendly man who seemed impatient with us as we were trying to decide what to order. I choose the pork egg foo young which was three patties smothered in gravy with white rice on the side. It was quite tasty and I definitely had leftovers. My spouse had the chicken and vegetables which was also an ample portion that she thought was just okay. It also came with an egg roll that she enjoyed. Overall the food was pretty good, but the vibe was kind of strange. I guess if I'm over on that side of town I'd give it a try again, but for now the search continues for our new spot. read more

Just moved here and desperately seeking good (not even great) Chinese food. Dragon Inn is not it. Rice was cold and clumpy. I ordered pepper beef. What little beef there was was thin and nearly shredded. It was tasteless without even a hint of spice. My wife ordered the curry chicken. Again, equally bland. Food: Excellent authentic Chinese menu. I went a few times earlier this year and sampled the following: Dan Dan Noodles (wide noodles, meaty, with lots of sauce) - this can feed multiple people Shredded Pork with Dried Tofu - a little spicy but not too much Shredded Pork with Black Bean Sauce (and pancakes) - sweet sauce and a good amount of pork and chives. I would get all of these again. I've also had Americanized Chinese off the main menu, they were OK, but stick with the authentic menu. Lesson learned: call if you want to order these authentic dishes, they aren't on yelp's online order platform, at least not the mobile one. Service: The last two times I went (end of February/early March), I got entrees, but no rice. Strange, but I wasn't going back for white rice. I had to repeat my order, rather than them reading my order back to me. Time: It may take a while, but I didn't have to wait the last few times. About 25 minutes or so for takeout. Parking: near Ollie's Bargain Outlet as you head north on Guess Road. Turn left near Harris Teeter then right into the strip mall. Return: I've been back, so yes. read more

The major issue with this restaurant is that everything 'spicy' is cut from the same spice cloth. If you just got one thing, maybe you wouldn't notice - that one piece of cloth is pretty tasty! But when your Chongqing chili chicken, your boiled fish in chili oil, and your dry pot all taste basically the same with a few minor variations, it gets a little much. I'm thankful for the waiter, who overheard me wondering if I could handle triple chili pepper spicy, and reassured us that it wasn't spicy. Having sweat my entire face off in dry pot restaurants in Chongqing and Chengdu, I was skeptical, but indeed - 'three chili pepper spicy' wasn't even enough to bead my forehead. So, taken separately - the chili chicken was probably the best, in a satisfying finger food kind of way. Like much more exciting chicken fingers. This would be followed by the fish, which has a thicker chili sauce/broth and a decent stewy bite. The dry pot, while tasty, is really too saucy to be dry and gives the textural impression of, I don't know, yakisoba. read more

Still 5 stars. Tonight we ordered chive pancakes from the special menu. Scrumptious! Fried wonton wrappers around chives and scrambled eggs. We didn't see the Chinese menu until after we ordered, but we were pleased with the Singapore noodles (super spicy ) and Kung Pao shrimp. The veggies in the shrimp dish were perfectly cooked. One note would be to be mindful of any allergies. Spouse request his noodles without egg, which was honored. However the chive pancakes arrived with egg, which we did not expect. I've dined in on two occasions and ordered takeout at least three times over the past two years, so I feel confident in saying that this place is really hit or miss. Unfortunately, the past couple of times it has been more of a miss. Last week we ordered takeout - one combination dinner of sweet and sour chicken with steamed rice, egg roll, and wonton soup; one Singapore noodles with shrimp; and another cup of wonton. Let's start with the wonton soup. The broth had no flavor; it wasn't even salty. The wontons were mushy and the meat tasted very off. Not a good start to the meal. The sweet and sour chicken would have been okay except that they forgot to include the sweet and sour sauce, so it was basically just fried pieces of chicken served with steamed rice. The Singapore noodles were spicier than they are at most other restaurants, and I didn't find the included veggies particularly tasty. I usually love Singapore noodles, so I was disappointed in these. We are crossing Dragon Inn off our list, and our search for good Chinese takeout will continue. read more

Wow, a good way to summarize this. I called in an order and they said it would be ready in a half hour. I went down there, and it took 55 minutes to finish in all. At the same time, they were still taking orders, and telling people it was 30 minutes to get there food. There was a huge line of people waiting. When I got my food, everything was bad. My crab Rangoons were tasteless and one was basically empty. My Egg drop soup was basically just a broth. My General Tso's chicken, had barely any flavor and no heat to it at all. I ended up throwing away 2/3 of every part of this and ate something else I had around the house. My roommate got another meal and ended up doing the same. I will never return, because this was the worst meal I have had in over a year and that includes pop-tarts. read more

To start off, let's just say my experience was so awful I wished I could give no stars. I waited for my order for over 45 minutes and coming from nyc, a restaurant with food quality like this is already overly expensive. We finally got our food and the tofu hot pot was sour inside the tofu and the fried rice was noticeably spoiled and had a sour scent to it. My friend who is a chef immediately noticed this and we called back. When we called, the owner picked up and my friend was just letting him know that the food was spoiled and instead of apologizing, he became very rude and kept saying profanity in Chinese not knowing we understand. My husband and I placed our online order here at Dragon Inn, at 6:10pm. We arrive at the place by 6:40pm which was 25 minutes after. The front desk told us as soon as we mention our order "one hour" to wait for our food! Another 25 minutes later we asked again how long it would be and were told it would still be another hour!!!that's a total of 2 hours being told to wait for our food!!!! The front desk also said to another customer "don't waist your time. It's gonna be 2 hours." I witness people who are dining in still waiting for their food! There were several DoorDashers who were also told to not even bother! This place has poor management and deserves the worst rating, not even a 1 star!!! read more

This place is terrible. They have two menus, one for native Chinese Americans, and then the "tourist" menu. The cooks really don't give a crap about the regular menu. Every time I order from them the food is really awful! Tonight is the last time I will ever order from them. I ordered a deep fried chicken dish. The chicken was so over cooked all that was left was a crusty bread, the chicken had vaporized. It was like eating a hollowed out burned out, Cheeto. It's almost as if there is some type of cynicism at play where their regular menu for the average Chinese food eater is cooked so poorly, as if they believe non-native Chinese, DON'T CARE, and that we'll eat ANYTHING, even the CRAP they are serving. I hate to give a bad review since there are not many authentic Chinese restaurants in the triangle area, but I gave this place 2 stars based on the combination of the serving time, food, and customer service. We got there around 1pm on Saturday, there were only 3 tables at the time, and one of them had the food on the table already. We ordered one appetizer and dry hot pot as our meal to share. The waitress brought over the rice 5 minutes after we ordered from the menu, but the food didn't show up. 20 minutes later, the table behind us asked the waitress how long would it take to get their food, they were told in 2 minutes. We ordered about the same time, so I figured they would be coming soon. But when the waitress finally served food on both our tables, it was 10-15 minutes later, the rice was cold already! The hot pot wasn't bad, authentic flavor and taste, a little too salty though. The appetizer we ordered was Chinese street-style crispy pancake, but we didn't get our appetizer until we finished the half of the hot pot. The waitress told us that there was only one chef in the kitchen, but that didn't make sense to us why the appetizer came out after the main dish, and that's not a good excuse. The taste was awful, the fried dough(you tiao) was the frozen type, no crispness and crunchy taste at all. The wrap had a rotten egg taste, I spat out immediately, and both of us felt the same way. But when we told the waitress about it, her only reaction was it must be something wrong with our taste buds. Wow, something else!
