Maybe I ordered the wrong items. That said, the pad Thai and the Kung Pao chicken were not good. Their version of kung pao is basically a brown sauce with fried chicken pieces like sesame chicken, not even close to what I expected. It tasted as poorly as it looked. Looking for a place on my list for dinner before our DPAC show, I saw Spring Rolls. I didn't see a way to make reservations and hoped it wouldn't be too busy early on a Saturday. Also, knew the parking should be easy. We walked in and got a table immediately. It was our first visit and they took their time telling us all about the restaurant, the food and being a family venture. The drink specials are every day and they have great specials. The food was devine. The sister is the head chef and her dishes were superb. We started with Wonton and Hot and Sour soup. Both were delicious. We had the Pad Thai and Kung Pao Prawns with brown rice for dinner. Nice size portions with good flavor. Great local run restaurant... go by and see them. read more

I was out last night for a friend's birthday, and he was quite excited to give Spring Rolls a try. I honestly hadn't heard of the place, and didn't have any expectations going in, so finding this gem was quite a treat. The freshness of the food is not to be underestimated. The fare is largely Cantonese standards, with one Szechuan dish (that I had), and a handful of Thai and Japanese dishes. All the dishes are prepared fresh and individually, which generally cause dishes to come out staggered. It appears to be a three-person outfit (brother, sister and business partner), which does appear to limit their attentiveness and responsiveness at times, but we were all out to enjoy a special occasion, so that wasn't a detractor for us. I had spring rolls, a bite of a friend's tempura vegetables, and the Szechuan stir fry with chicken. We were quite impressed with the appetizers - the tempura veg, especially the mushrooms, were delightful, and the fry quality of these items were fantastic. The filling for the spring rolls was delightfully fresh and crisp. My Szechuan stir fry dish certainly had the tell tale numbing spice of peppercorns from the region, but was far from "burn your mouth out spicy". I would have been fine with that (there are times when I want that!) but was glad to have the essence of the peppers without accompanying chili burn. The sweet-to-savory balance and seasoning of the sauce on the whole was simply delightful. I also nabbed a bit of the birthday boy's eggplant, and relished in proper preparation of Chinese eggplant. We were the only table in there (minus some folks that were finishing their meal at the bar) as we popped in closer to close, but that didn't stop the vibe of the place being very fun, modern and bright. They were jamming out to 80's hits, which was quite delightful. ordered takeout this evening and it was simply awful. egg roll filling covered in grease--inedible. pad thai was flavorless noodles cooked to within an inch of there life and again greasy. Bun was mostly a bowl of naked white noodles, no mint, no fish sauce, dry choaking chicken. Just miserable when we went to pick up order there were no costumers-- not a great sign in retrospect. Walking through downtown Durham while waiting to attend an event I was drawn into Sprihg Rolls. This was not due to an aroma or a sign, but by one of the staff members Radley. I was looking at their menu outside when the door suddenly opened, and here is this attractive dude telling me to come in out of the cold. He hands me a menu and asks me a series of questions, and tells me to stay. After checking out the menu, I decided to stay and sit at the bar. We continued our conversation while I sipped some water and ordered broccoli and chicken. The owner, Eddy, appears out of nowhere and chats it up with me. Eddy told me about how they opened during the pandemic and somehow stayed afloat on to go orders. Now, they stay pretty busy and have community events throughout the month. Then, a challenge from the owner to play jenga. As we played, my food came out pipping hot. The broccoli had a slight crunch, and the brown sauce that topped the other vegetables and chicken was light and not sweet or overpowering. I continued to dig in while I lost at jenga. Five stars for this gem on main street. The food was fresh and delicious; and they were super generous with their portions. Also, where can you go, and you end up playing jenga with the owner? What a cute spot. I appreciate being able to get fresh & hot Asian food and order a cocktail! They have a few bar height tables where you can eat and enjoy the TV and some music. The service was great! They also have take out and I saw folks dropping in to get to~go orders. I ordered the sesame chicken with White rice. It was just as described! This place was AMAZING!! My partner and I came to Durham for an overnight stay and show at DPAC, we stopped in Spring Rolls for dinner beforehand and landed on a hidden gem! When we first arrived there was one table sat and the host/server/bartender/owner came and sat us. He was so fun and energetic, he really made us feel so welcomed in a new city! The service was incredible, and the food was even better! The owner told us that they had opened the week that covid hit and after closing down for two years they had lost all their staff so it is just him and his sister. For a team of two the place was pristine, everything was delicious and the service was quick! We ordered 3 entrees (spring rolls, potstickers and crab rangoon) and an entree (chicken lo mein) as well as the mango sunrise cocktail all for $40 total! It was so much food we had to take the entree to go! I would highly recommend stopping in Spring Rolls for a bite, a drink, and a lovely conversation with two small local businesses owners. Service was super slow: it took 20+ min to receive a crab Rangoon appetizer, and during that time, the server never followed up on our entree order, so we just said nevermind. We also saw two other tables receive their food before ours. The menu states 6 should come with the order and we only received 4. We ordered two drinks in the meantime and they were decent. They do have decent drink specials. The staff is super friendly and It's family owned. They make everything fresh to order so I believe the food would be good if I returned, but I would not come here if I'm hungry. read more

I went with a group of about 7 of us and we were treated so well I only ordered drinks and the Bang Bang shrimp but neither disappointed! I loved this spot. We were originally planning to go to a different spot downtown but it was packed so we wandered for a bit and found Spring Rolls. We were looking at the menu posted outside when the owner spotted us and told us that everything is made fresh here. The bartender also invited us inside. After debating a couple of minutes we decided to try them out. It's a small intimate spot. It had nice decor and it looked practically new. The bartender said it's only been open about 9 months, so it's still fairly new. The food did not disappoint and the portion sizes were good. Also the drinks were good as well. The prices were reasonable as well and because it's new there was no wait time! I have a feeling that won't be the case for long. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. I highly recommend not going here if you want your order done correctly. We have been given shrimp fried rice instead of chicken fried rice three separate times after expressing a shellfish allergy. Tonight, we were given shrimp fried rice and then beef fried rice before we were finally given the proper order with no sort of refund. First and foremost- the food is absolutely delicious and the menu has so many great Asian dish options! I love all Asian foods- and it's always a dilemma to find what I want. This visit I enjoyed the General Tao's Chicken with fried rice and the amazing owner (who wears many hats!) made me a virgin margarita since I am pregnant! It was absolutely delicious!!! Secondly, the service is TOP TIER! The owner Eddie and Mama are amazing and shared the story of their business and culture ! As a black woman-- I know the importance of supporting Mama businesses and family organizations!!!! Thirdly, their dining room space was not just a place to eat; but a great networking venue that they frequently use to give back to their community!!! I am absolutely in awe of them!!! In a few words awful . The service was fine but the food was terrible. We ordered pot stickers . Orange chicken and Schezuan chicken . The pot sticker came out of a fryer extremely crispy with a small amount of filling and no flavor . The other items came out cold. The orange chicken was like sweet and sour . It had a slightly sweet coating and no orange flavor . The Szechuan chicken had a salty goopy sauce with little heat or flavor. Not going back! read more

Came in on a weekday and it so happen to be their one month anniversary of being open since having to close due to COVID . We were greeted by staff and owner which really made the experience pleasant. They shared fun facts about the way they make their foods: they prep their spices and fruits to make their sauces everyday, veggies are hand cut to go with the fried rice and noodles . All in all the food was savory and fresh I recommend the chefs platter which is the best way to kick start your meals, you get about 6 appetizers for a fraction of the price if they were a la carte. I can't forget to mention the drink menu, they have a great variety of options, wine, beer, cocktails for prices that felt generous for the area. Let me mention the space, spacious, clean and a bar wide enough to holds several parties. I'll definitely be back to experience other items on the menu.
