But, netting out at almost $800/night increases expectations and so it probably deserves more like 3 or 3-1/2 stars. It was a 3 bedroom home and was ok -- nothing fancy or high-end. So maybe the cost was based on the size? Importantly, what we really believed we were paying extra for that would have been worth the money was the "farm stay" aspect. It may have been a house on a farm property, but it was not a "farm stay experience." The only thing that came close were the animals, but their enclosures were small, cramped, on the side of the road (which was steep and hard to walk on), and the animals did not look healthy or well taken care of. The alpaca's fur was matted up and many of the chickens had bald spots on their backs, potentially due to overcrowding, rooster overbreeding, or aggressively going after each other in such a small space for so many hens (and hopefully not from parasites). It was a side show vs. a real farm experience. Back to the house, another attraction in the listing was the hot tub -- but it had a really horrible smell. The towels we used to dry off with kept the smell too. We used it on the first day, but not afterward. It's a shame. If the hot tub issue were fixed, the property is nice enough, but I do believe it is mis-marketed. It'd probably be very appealing for a bigger group who is visiting the Temecula wine country scene, but who doesn't want to be in the middle of the fray and, instead, wants a quieter location that feels off the beaten path. It should not be marketed as a "farm stay." And the poor animals should definitely go, especially as they feel like such an after thought on the property anyhow.

The preserve has several well-marked, directional trails, which is super helpful in case you get turned around. It does get very busy, and parking is almost always full unless you arrive early or don't mind waiting. The views are beautiful, with lots of flowers along the way. I personally did about 5 miles, but the trails definitely go beyond that. It was a great hike--challenging but enjoyable--and perfect for my dog and me. The trail is dog-friendly, but we did come across horseback riders, so a friendly reminder to be mindful of others on the trail, especially horses, and to keep your dogs under control. Overall, this was an amazing hike and I highly recommend this trail!‍

I also love that there's a sign at the beginning of the hike that lists/dates recent wildlife sightings. It does get incredibly busy here. Despite visiting on a Wednesday the parking lot was completely filled by 10am. Highly recommend arriving early if you want to snag a spot.

My friend and I went for a birthday celebration. It was just the two of us. On March 14, it was a…read morefine spring day. Perfect to be on a mountain top in the sunshine sifting through rocks and hunting for gems. The Oceanview mine works in finding a number of different quartz, Tourmoline, and other gems. Take a look at their website. For $75 for an adult, you get all the equipment that you need to sift through rock and gravel piles which they set out for you. There are a big tables, the two grades of sorters, a bucket, trowel, and toothbrush to clean off rocks. Also a big tray of water to rinse your rocks in and clean them off. There were igneous rocks with black tourmaline and tiny pieces of garnet. It was a lot of fun. You have to get there promptly at the opening time in order to get situated and the digging/sorting/sifting begins sharp at 10 AM. You have three hours and 45 minutes to go through all the rocks that you want. Bring your own gloves! They also have shaded umbrellas, and 5 gallon buckets to purchase that you can load up with rocks to sift through on your own at home. While it was a fun adventure, and I've never been to a quarry mine that you could actually look for your own gems, the staff did leave a little to training, although they were very good about going around and assisting you. However, I think if you really want to find something, you need to educate yourself ahead of time as to what you are looking for and what is available. Five minute presentation to 50 people wouldn't you can't even really look at the rocks and no handout or guide sheet for reference was a drawback. They don't take credit cards for the entrance. You have to pay cash. Children are a lower price. But they do take credit cards for memorabilia, gemstones that they have turned into jewelry and other items. And also for the rentals. I thought the purchasing of a 5 gallon bucket for $10 was too much. They don't make it clear that if you want to take home a 5 gallon bucket of extra stones to sort through then you can bring your own. I thought for the price of $75 a 5 gallon bucket would be included. They are not. There are picnic tables in the shade where you can have your own lunch, there is a grill you can use if you want to utilize that. Bring all of your own beverages, water, and snacks and meal. There is a short tour that you can take of the areas that they mine on this mountain. You load up on a four wheel vehicle that holds six people and spin around the mountainside, stopping at the entrance of three of the mine shafts. This is only about a 5 to 7 minute tour. They don't allow you to stop get out and take pictures in front of the mine openings. This was certainly a drawback. They could've extended the "tour" to let you get out and take pictures in front of the mine shafts. Perhaps it is a liability issue I don't know. I would not do this for a second time since I've already done it, without further educating myself about gem hunting and what exactly I was looking for. But for a one time adventure, it was fun and we had a beautiful spring day. Don't forget your sunblock and sunglasses and hat!

My son is a rock hound, and the idea of being able to mine your own gems here at Oceanview Mines has been on his lips for a few years now. So, we finally decided that for his Xmas gift last year, we'd make his dreams come true with a trip to SD and a visit to the mines. Most kids want Disneyland, but mine wants to mine, which, oddly enough, sounds about right. :0) The Good: *Reservations are mandatory and made easily thru the website. They'll keep you informed and reminded of your apt both thru email and text message. *Staff is very friendly and helpful. *Store that sells swag as well as gems and other rocks to take home and pretend you mined yourself. They do take CC at the store fyi. *Very clean and hospitable restrooms. *Shaded/covered areas w/ picnic tables to rest and grab a nosh at. *Even if you're not really into it (aka moi), you kinda get the fever of what's next as you sift thru each load. Kinda like playing the slot machines at the casino kinda rush. You could definitely see how someone can get addicted to this. *Fun for the whole family. The Meh: *Must bring cash for your entrance fee to the mine, which is strange considering that they take CC at the store. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ *The drive up to the mine was a bit harry, but nothing too bad. If you're coming after a big rain, it might be better if you had some kinda AWD SuV, tho. The Ugly: *Kinda pricey for what it is imo @$75/ea (12-××) & $60/ea (5-11 yrs old) w/ no option to just come along for the ride and not actively mine. *Their rules about paying ahead of time seem a bit "Soup N@zi"-ish, but it's nowhere near as bad as it sounds. Just make sure you have your waiver printed and signed, and your cash in hand (bring exact change don't assume they're gonna make change). Conclusion: Pricey but fun and 100% worth it if you're into gems and such. My son would do this every day if he could. Tips: *If you arrive early, they you have the opportunity to walk around the property and search for stuff that's laying about. Can't access the pile until it's time, tho. *Definitely bring a hat (wide-brimmed preferable), because even in the winter the sun can be brutal. It is still SoCal, after all. *Bring gloves because you're hands will get tore up sifting thru all that rock. A pair of those nitrile dipped ones (±$3-5) from the hardware store should suffice. *A bucket to carry your haul and any other equipment you bring. Doesn't need to be a huge bucket but at least a 2-gallon. *An umbrella or one of those covered structures you take to the beach would be great, if you have it. They do have umbrellas to rent for $15. *Bring snacks and drinks. They do sell some stuff if you forget or would rather not be bothered, but then you can't complain about what they have. ;) *Bring spare clothes, because you will get wet and dirty. There's just no avoiding it. *Get ready for a workout, as it's pretty hard work doing this for four hours. Disclaimer: This really isn't my thing, as I could care less about rocks, gems, and mining. So the rating would most likely be higher if I did, so take that FWIW.

The trail is mostly easy to moderate and great for walking, hiking, or even horseback riding. It's also very dog-friendly, but keep your dog on a leash; simple. There are horses and other trail users beyond you and your dog. Be considerate, which reminds me, pack it in, pack it out. It does get pretty busy, especially on weekends, so expect to see lots of people, dogs, and riders sharing the trail. Parking is free, but it can fill up quickly. The lot fills with trailers. Overall, it's a great place to enjoy nature, just be prepared for crowds if you go during peak times. Also, bring plenty of water and snacks because it can get hot during the summer months. The signage does remind you to keep an eye out for rattlesnakes, poison oak, and uneven or rocky terrain. I've seen plenty of poison oak, so pay attention.

Me and the pup started our hike at about 8am and unfortunately because I'm not usually a hiker, I definitely got lost even with a map. I didn't really know there was like 7 different paths you could go on and well I guess I did a little bit of this and a little bit of that and ended up leaving about 3 hours after. It was a pretty one for sure but be careful of dog poop. A lot of dogs on the trail and not a lot of people picking up that poop. Unfortunately, there are not any trash cans on the trail so if your dog has to go, try to do it before the hike instead of on it. I was carrying that bag what felt like forever. The greenery is gorgeous obviously and the water seemed nice, I just didn't feel like going through it to get wet. Fairly easy hike except for some sketchy rock ledges. Other than that, be cool, wear a hat, pick up your dog poop and watch out for the horses.

Pilot Denni (the owner of the company with almost 40 years of pilot experience) was great and landed in the same place we took off, which is likened to a hole in one in golf. The whole experience was less than 3hrs. The ride itself lasted about an hour. We were transported to and from the launch and landing sites. They took some pictures for us and provided a balloon ride certificate at the end with discounts for local wineries and businesses. Mimosas and a bag of snacks were provided at the end. It was a great experience and would recommend to anyone willing to wake up before sunrise.

We booked on their website and used the promo code "Groupon" for a discounted price of about $180 per person. The meeting point was in the parking lot of a shopping center in Temecula at 5:30am. There, they went over some rules, info about hot air ballooning and there was a photographer/videographer, Wesly Cajuste, selling packages for stills and a video. He has a drone that follows the balloon. My friends and I decided to go for it since it was our first time and it was a special occasion (friend's birthday). We were very happy with the way the video and the photos came out. Then, a couple shuttle vans took us to where they were setting up the hot air balloons, which varies depending on the wind. Before getting in the basket, we got to go in the balloon while they were inflating it. It was chilly in the morning, but it gets pretty warm being under the propane tank, so hats and layers are suggested. We were 4 groups of 4 and were assigned to a huge balloon with 4 separate compartments we were snug in. The knowledgeable and experienced pilot, Brian, was in the middle. I read that the baskets have doors but we had to climb in ours. The ride was about an hour long and we had a spectacular view of Temecula valley. I was a little nervous about the landing, but Brian is clearly a pro and did a magnificent job with a smooth landing on an open field. No mimosas in the air since there are no restrooms, but they busted out the Crooks when we got out! The website said breakfast, but they actually just give out ziplocked bags of snacks. Lol! Totally not necessary. The balloon ride was the ultimate highlight! They also give a certificate, which includes a list of wineries you can get discounts at for having done the hot air experience.

Once you pull in though everything opens up into this lush wilderness. It has a huge parking lot. Once you get on the trail it is well maintained and plenty of space for dogs joggers strollers etc. Bird watchers this is your heaven! There were so many different species in here. The funnest part of this trail is there is choose your own adventure. Along the way you choose left or right over and over. You can't go wrong because it is a beautiful view no matter which way you turn. The best part of all is if you are the type to get lost like me it will spit you out into the parking lot because it's a huge loop. A huge loop with different trails what a great place! The only reason I gave it a four-star instead of a five is unfortunately it's built right on the side of mission Ave which is the main avenue going into fallbrook so there is a lot of traffic noise. That is only part of the trail though not the whole thing. I will be back here on my days off because it's an easy going 1 mile so I feel like I barely had to do anything, got into nature and got my steps in.
