We love, love, love going to this shop. We are always greeted so warmly and enjoy conversations with the owner, Jane. We came in and got oils, incense, a new pendulum, herbs, and many other things. Best of all, we told stories and shared experiences which meant the world to us. Please go and check out this gem of a shop. All pricing is very reasonable and there is even layaway!

Imagine my delight to realize that the Changing Hands Tempe location was mere minutes away from our previous stop! Of course, we had to visit. I was immediately engrossed by the assortment of non-cheesy and extremely cool gift items that were at the front of the store, but also sprinkled throughout the location. I also really enjoyed that they had both new and used books. I try to limit myself to purchasing used books for environmental concerns, but it's tricky to find new titles pre-owned, so I justified a splurge and purchased two new books. The prices for both new and used books were extremely fair. In addition to the copious amounts of books, gift items, indie bookstore merch, and everything else wonderful, they also have a photo booth! My sister and I have an agreement to indulge in every photo booth we stumble upon, so we were super excited to happen upon one here. I can't say enough good things about this spot. I'm already excited to return.

I was shopping, and waiting for my trade offer for some items I brought in. I asked to look at a Collector Comic Book that was locked in a case. I asked the staff member if I could take the book out and look a it because I wanted to make sure nothing was cut out of the comic. He immediately became defensive, and his attitude became hostile. I said "if there is anything cut out it's not worth $25 and I want to check. If I damage it while looking at it, I'll pay for it." His response wasn't helpful or understanding, it was pushy and abusive. "You should just get these while you see them. No one has these, and I've never seen one in our store since I've been here". I said "I have been collecting comics all of my life, and if there is anything cut out, it's not worth $10 to me". Again, instead of being friendly and asking anything helpful or asking questions, he was pushy and forceful, and became even more irritated when I pointed out the water damage on the back of the comic and told him I didn't want it. He was very unfriendly from the start. A toxic person, to be as kind as I can be. I received notice that my trade offer was ready, but I cancelled my trade offer, and walked out of the store with the items I had brought to trade. I WILL NEVER RETURN AS LONG AS THAT PERSON WORKS THERE. When I advised the staff of what happened, they seemed disinterested in doing anything. I asked them "how can you allow a person who treats customer this was to work here, and why would you want to work here if the business allows this?" They all looked at me with blank stares on their faces. A manager did talk to me, but it was the same attitude as the rude employee. He didn't introduce himself my name. He didn't try to find out the name of the employee. His attitude, like the rude staff member, was an attitude of not wanting to be there, an attitude of feeling irritated that they have to actually talk to a customer and assist them, an attitude of superiority and entitlement, an attitude that their customers do not matter to them and that they don't respect people in general. I advised their manager on duty that I work as a customer service consultant, and the employees treatment was unacceptable. He did offer complimentary credit, but did not indicate how much. I declined and told them honestly "I don't care if you pay me a Billion dollars in cash, I don't want it if that person works here. What he did was unacceptable and he should be fired". I am sure they won't do anything, and I want everyone to know that Bookman's is a TOXIC company who does not appreciate their customers, and they will screw you over and abuse you if you go there.

Whether…read moreyou're looking for a new book or a bouquet, Wijaya is a great place to buy a gift for someone or to treat yourself. I've visited a couple times now, but on my most recent visit, I attended one of their ticketed flower bouquet making events. You can find a wide range of artsy book-related or flower-related events on their website. For this class, it was learning how to make a spiral bouquet. It was so fun learning this technique and leaving with a a bouquet that I had designed! I was immediately greeted by a young friendly woman at the front who left me to peruse the store. There's a selection of books for everyone, with sections for various genres housed on the east wall and within their bookcases and tables. I love the idea of a blind date with a book, and they had no shortage of options! There's a small area containing tees and other merch and, even tho I'm not a big sci-fi fan, I loved the setup they had for the genre! What I hadn't anticipated was the section that had the Sweet Valley Twins books! The nostalgia was HEAVY let me tell you! :) Regardless of how small the store seemed, they do an amazing job of packing in the books and I was impressed that there's literally every type of genre you could want there. Adding to the great vibes are the comfy sitting areas with plush seating, an old typewriter you can crank out 'hellos' to future visitors on, and plants and decor that add charm to some mid century modern furniture. What makes this place so unique though is the assortment of fresh flowers in the back and the flower workshops they hold each week. I haven't gone to one yet, but I plan on it, they look really cool! I highly recommend Wijaya House to any book lover, but especially those that prefer the locally owned to the big box store. I'm planning my next visit soon. :)

What I liked about this place was the abundance of reference books. I need to bone up on my chemistry skills from way back, so I bought a couple of older texts for just such a purpose. I also wandered into their $1 zone and found a couple of impulse buys. How can you not be impulsive when every book in that section is a buck? I found an old cookbook from "The Froog"... that's The Frugal Gourmet for those who remember back when he had a cooking show on PBS. Those who think Paula Deen was the only famous cooking television personality to be tarnished by scandal would do well to look Jeff Smith up on the Interwebs. I guess I know now why his stuff is in the bargain section... but his disappearance from the culinary scene is my shopportunity! The staff here seemed quite knowledgable. I had an interesting discussion with them about the collectibility of some of the Dungeons & Dragons manuals they displayed. I was not aware that the Deities & Demigods manual (available here for $75) was produced in two different versions, the later one omitting any Cthuhlu mythology due to legal issues). I forgot to check which versions were stocked here, but I am well familiar with this book from my childhood (not because I was a D&D player, but because I was into mythology). I had a fun time exploring this bookstore and chatting with the staff. I will return to navigate Bookmaze again sometime. If you've got some time to kill, this is a fine, quirky little bookstore in which to browse, browse, browse for bargains.
