This place is a bit of a maze but definitely worth exploring. I happened upon this bookstore after a hearty breakfast over at the Waffle House, which shares in the same general strip mall parking lot. What I liked about this place was the abundance of reference books. I need to bone up on my chemistry skills from way back, so I bought a couple of older texts for just such a purpose. I also wandered into their $1 zone and found a couple of impulse buys. How can you not be impulsive when every book in that section is a buck? I found an old cookbook from "The Froog"... that's The Frugal Gourmet for those who remember back when he had a cooking show on PBS. Those who think Paula Deen was the only famous cooking television personality to be tarnished by scandal would do well to look Jeff Smith up on the Interwebs. I guess I know now why his stuff is in the bargain section... but his disappearance from the culinary scene is my shopportunity! The staff here seemed quite knowledgable. I had an interesting discussion with them about the collectibility of some of the Dungeons & Dragons manuals they displayed. I was not aware that the Deities & Demigods manual (available here for $75) was produced in two different versions, the later one omitting any Cthuhlu mythology due to legal issues). I forgot to check which versions were stocked here, but I am well familiar with this book from my childhood (not because I was a D&D player, but because I was into mythology). I had a fun time exploring this bookstore and chatting with the staff. I will return to navigate Bookmaze again sometime. Weird place. Definitely a cool concept, it tries to stay as true to a "maze" as possible. The mildew smell couldn't be ignored. The man working had pajamas and no shoes on-- I'm not one to judge, but it seemed like he wasn't expecting us. Kind of creepy and half done. Not a very good selection and they only took like 1/8th of the books we tried to sell, for $20. It took everything in me not to get annoyed. I had originally On my way! to this plaza to visit another store. Unfortunately the store did not open for another hour. Instead I saw a book store and went to visit them. I was greeted upon my entry. Having never been here I had no idea how they were organized. After wandering I saw tape on the shelves indicating the type of books. The tape was not always available so it made it hard to navigate the store. It is a used book and game store. They have a separate children's area with a couch. Other than that I saw no chairs or other shoppers. It was a bit strange to be the only shopper. Shared parking lot with Cox WiFi for subscribers. read more

I really wanted to like this place but I just couldn't. O love mom & pop shops. I love the idea of getting lost in a maze of books... but didn't love it in reality. With a few changes it would actually be an amazing store. It felt very disorganized. There were very few labels on the shelves so I was left guessing what each section was supposed to contain. If there were labels at all they were generally peeling pieces of tape with faded marker so it's obvious very little care was taken in upkeep over long periods of time. Also didn't have much of a selection of books written this millennia. And my guy, I was in your store for almost an hour, the only person in fact, and you never once said hello, can I help you find anything, or goodbye. Excellent book digging. "Organized" but not so perfectly so that you don't come across surprises. Massive variety. The pricing scheme is a discount based on original cover price, so most things are a bargain, even compared to other used book stores. I've been looking for a good used book store relatively near the ASU campus for years and now I've finally found it! This store at first looks like not much, but the farther you walk in, the more you realize there is to see! There's even an upstairs (I heard someone mistook it for storage at first, lol). They have the best Scifi section I've ever seen! The authors are all alphabetized and what's more-they have GOOD authors. A lot of Scifi lovers don't like to let go of the books they find that they like, so it's hard to find stores that carry much good stuff(most of it's been picked clean). I found a book that I've been looking for for years! I almost cried I was so ecstatic! (Generation Warrior by McCaffery and Moon) Oh, yeah...they have other books besides Scifi, those are just my favorite..... So the prices:..the books were half off the cover price. That seems steep if you compare it to most big name book stores like Barnes and Noble, who sell 15-20 dollar books (that aren't as good), but a lot of the books sold here are older so the cover prices are not that much. I saw a lot that were $3.95 and half the cover price off of that is $2.00 If you figure that the selection is ridiculously good and that you can't even FIND a lot of these books, let alone buy them anywhere else, you'll see this is a GREAT DEAL. Cafe area:....also doesn't look like much, but it was some of the best Thai tea I've had in a while. My friend got a green tea-black berry smoothie (I know sounds weird, hu?), which was so good! The guy working there had about 50 different drinks we could have gotten (including coffee, italian soda, and Kerns-why don't more people sell Kerns?). Atmosphere: home-y touch/relaxing (my new favorite place after exams are done for the day) However, they don't have very clear signs up, so you either need to wander all over to find the section you want or else you have to find the clerk and ask him. Wifi: It exists here! Who would have thought?! Yeah, so this is my first review ever. I hope this helps you students looking for books! I'm hoping this place will replace the Borders that used to be on the corner of Mill and University in terms of a social atmosphere to meet like-minded people. Maybe I'll see you there? read more

I love old bookstores. I love losing myself in a building filled top to bottom with books, surrounding myself in so many words put on paper by people who have sat down to write. It's a beautiful thing. When I heard about this store, I was so excited. A two story used bookstore with a café?! The very idea is as if someone took my own personal heaven and placed it Tempe. Yes, please. Now fast forward to me walking in. All the air deflating from my body. There are a lot of books. There is also a café, I suppose. This place is dirty and not in the way that a used bookstore should be dirty, it's dirty in like a sifting through your grandparents garage kind of dirty. There are a lot of shelves covered in books that are old and forgotten, nothing up to date which isn't exactly their fault I suppose but a proper display or two would possibly make the place feel more like a book store and less like a storage unit. There are boxes of who knows what blocking walkways that makes it difficult to roam around. It's eerily quiet in there, nothing going on except the quiet murmur of the employee watching something on his computer, giving me an awkward feeling like I'm not supposed to be in there. Some music would really liven the place up. I can only imagine what this place could be like with proper care, there is so much potential. I was very excited to find an Independent Book Store in the area and was especially excited to use my Groupon which gave me $25 worth of merchandise and free drink for the cost of $10. The books were soooo old. Most of them are at least 10 years old. It was even more shocking to find out that the hardcover books are 1/3 of the cover cost and paper books are 1/2 the cover cost. You can cheaper books in the bargain section of Barnes and Noble. This store ended up being a major disappointment, and you'd be better off just going to your local library. read more

Bookmaze is a fun little used bookstore. They have a wide variety of everything. I've been especially amused by their cookbook section. They also have I believe all the romance novels in the entire world. :) I also enjoy the little cafe. They make a yummy Italian soda and I love that they have the all sugar coke. The only downside really is that like the store name it's a maze. While that's kind of cute and fun it can make it difficult to find what your looking for. On the other side half the fun of a used bookstore is never knowing what you're going to find. Also, they have board game nights every other Monday at 6pm. I've been to a couple and they are super fun. They have some games and encourage people to bring their own. read more

I am going to give the store 2 stars because the staff were friendly and inviting. However, I have to say I've experienced better because they were unable to properly process my payment. The store withdrew and then debited my account five times. That means the payment came out and then was debited back each time. I had to call the bank to get it sorted and to come back to pay in cash. If you are paying in cash, then, I think it's fine. So bring cash. read more

It's hard to rate an independent bookstore poorly, but I couldn't find a thing worth reading, and that's tough to accept. The collection is overwhelmingly dated and incredibly dull, and I know that's the difficult part of owning a secondhand store: you sell what people bring you. What I'm really rating, here, is the taste of the neighborhood: step it up, book-discarders! This is a local owned used Bookstore. I have been able to find all my books for my reading lists for school here. Plus there are tons of books here in general. It would be really hard to come in and not find something you like. Plus they are the only Bookstore close to ASU with a coffee/tea shop where you can sit down. read more

For the sheer quantity of books it would get a high rating ... but for quality and books you'd want to buy ... a lower rating. I asked and they said the books are from "a used bookstore going out of business in the Midwest" ... the books seem very old and not "interesting" reading. It seemed like it was the remainder of books left over after a used bookstore sold all the good books ... and the remaining books were taken to the goodwill but instead were brought to Arizona. No offense but the books are not good and high priced. Price of books at 1/3 of cover price would be about $7 to $10. Their trade policy is not even very good... 50c or $1 per book trade. To start this place is in a sketchy strip mall. I went in because I had an expired Groupon I wanted to at least used for what I paid for it. I walked in and was shocked to find that they had a little cafe. This place was so dirty I can't believe anyone would get a refreshment there. The book selection - the name says it all, it's a maze. Maybe it was meant to be that way but it comes off as disorganized and disheveled. I found it difficult to want to look for anything specific. The selection also seemed out of date. There was no pricing on anything so I assumed books were about 1/2 of cover (which is typical at used book stores) and picked out enough fiction to cover what I had originally paid for Groupon. I walked back down the un-vacuumed stairs to check out to have the owner ramble on about the people on the radio and take 7 minutes to type the info from the books I was getting into the outdated computer system. Never once did she ask about my shopping experience, not did she seem to care that I (the only customer) was there. Once finally rang up to total I handed her the expired groupon which in pretty large print reads (AMOUNT PAID $12 NEVER EXPIRES) and she refused to accept it. Bookmaze is the best! The perfect place to get lost in a book (helped by the maze like placing of bookshelves) :) I personally love stopping by to pick up a book along with an amazing Thai tea.. would totally recommend it! While your at it, you should check out the awesome mural on the cafe wall! I love seeing which literary characters I can pick out... Very homey and while sometimes confusing (as most used bookstores are) the staff is always willing to help me find my books! read more

This place truly lives up to its name -the upstairs floor is a maze. This sure isn't your Barnes & Noble where you're going to find whatever you're looking for, but with its rather eclectic collection, there are quite a few non-mainstream books that are worth looking at. Definitely a lot of old books - for example, Piers Anthony titles in hardbound and paperback. It gets points for having a section with books for $1. Downside, the guy working when I went wasn't entirely attentive or helpful but was at least pleasant. It could be that I went just at the start of summer so business was slow with no college kids in town. I'll definitely be going back. read more

This is an independently owned USED bookstore. The people that work there are friendly and the ones that I've dealt with are knowledgeable about sci fi, fantasy and cheesy romance novels. The prices are pretty decent though the organization is erratic. They have four square deals and twitter junk It's a decent place and should be visited at least 7 times. read more

I called to see whether this store was interested in purchasing any books and the woman who answered was rude because she was uninterested. She was not taking any, which was completely fine, so I thanked her for her time and hung up to call other stores to see if they were purchasing. I'm on google so I'm just going down the list and calling the different used bookstores and I guess I accidentally called this number twice and the woman was so beyond rude the second time I called I was honestly speechless for a few seconds. I apologized for accidentally calling her twice and asking and she just hung up. I was appalled by such unprofessional and honestly just sad customer service. I would never step foot into this store and I am recommending that all else do the same, or even call to ask any questions, unless you are prepared to be yelled at for asking a simple question politely. read more

I was in Phoenix on business travel and gave my book to someone with an earlier flight, so I was thrilled to find this place right off 101 at University in Tempe. I didn't expect to find many newish books in a used bookstore, but at least in the literature section there were quite a few. The selection is huge, I found it to be well organized by category and by author, with serendipitous tables of miscellaneous ones that were fun to notice as well. Great selection of spy-type novels and historical fiction, and much more that I didn't have time to look at. Lot of classics. Anyone looking for something to read on their flight home should plan to clear out part of a suitcase and head over! read more

This used book store is amazing! Thousands of books, and a cute little cafe, too. The set up is like a maze but with little reading nooks. They have a good assortment of books and even children's, teen and young people books. Book Maze also buys your used books so we take in our old ones, sell then buy lots of new to us books. The sign just says BOOKS in big green neon since the city of Tempe won't allow more but still the same place. Oh and the staff is very helpful and friendly too. read more

When I was a kid, there were cool independent pizza joints. Every one of them had a different taste. There were cool independent sub shops. No two subs were alike. And there were lots of cool independent book stores, each filled with unique treasures, and shopkeepers who were like runic lords, dragons of wondrous knowledge resting upon their precious hordes of pages... Gone now are most of the pizza joints. Gone are most of the sub shops. And while I may be willing to make do with Domino's and Subway - I draw the line at the independent book store. Bookmaze is that cookie, weird, god-knows-what-you-will-find-here place run by the sort of cookie, cool, weird, gotta-love-em proprietors that make me think the human race may still just possibly have a worthy place in this univers.
