There's a charm of chilly weather and the smell of books! Just stopped by to wander and peruse the children's books section but found some many good finds! There's an astonishing amount of classic literature, history, music, science - absolutely everything! Vintage books are a weakness for me and the dream to have a vintage book collection can be fulfilled here! They also sell gift certificates here so if you need a holiday gift - come by and see what you can find!

7.23.20: Such a treat to find a brick & mortar book store! I don't hang out in Mesa so had no knowledge of Book Gallery. Randy was super knowledgeable & told me their location used to be a movie theater years & years ago. Wow - love learning cool details like that. Their inventory is mind boggling: * First editions of course * Old Life, Look magazines - always fun for the old print ads inside * Classic books * Childrens picture book section * Paperbacks for summer beach reading * Humor books Basically they have something for everyone, even kids attached to their devices will find something to pique their curiosity. CV-19 Safety Protocols: shop employee wearing mask & customers are asked to wear masks but it is NOT enforced. There were only three people in the shop when I was there - I mask up & 2 out of 3 also wore masks.

This is my absolute favorite place, probably ever. The smell of all the old books is just something you don't experience every day. This place is so big and absolutely stunning. The books are amazing and gorgeous. I can't recommend stopping here and checking it out! Love love loveeeee

Old creaky wood floors, wooden bookcases, stairs leading up and stairs leading down, the smell of old pages.....this is what I love about the Book Gallery. Formerly the "Majestic Theater", a movie theater in downtown Mesa which opened in 1910. In the 1930's, it became the Ritz Movie Theater. An updated Art Deco style theatre that remained there until 1949. If you ask the workers at the Book Gallery, they will fill you in on the history of this place and even show you some photos of its former glory. While they do have a ton or books here, they may not have what you are looking for. Their selections are minimal and many of the books are old and dated. I usually come here and have my kids choose 1-2 books they like. Pages are always yellow and sometimes the spine isnt always in the best condition. Most of the books will have an original price tag on it. Ignore those, and flip to the first page where they will have a new price written in pencil. Prices are a bit high, but understandable to keep this place running. It's definitely not a place where you will find a great deal. This would be an ideal spot for finding an old book as a gift for a friend. Or if you like to keep old Library books as decor for your home.

It's a great bookstore with lots of antique books and comics. Unfortunately, they have a small travel section. This place reminds me of an old bookstore in New York like the Strand or Westsider. Many rare vintage pieces of literature, and even a few vinyl records. Navigating the stacks of books can be quite daunting, though. Many items in this store are mostly at discounted prices, and they offer occasional sale days. Put aside a few hours and let yourself get lost, you might find some out of print books! Have you ever dreamed about being Belle from Disney's Beauty and the Beast? Peculiar? Nose stuck in a book? Annoying piece of hair that keeps falling in front of your face? Check, check, and double check! Well, Book Gallery is probably one of the closest, and I might I add more reasonably priced, experiences someone can have to becoming the nerdiest of all the fictional princesses. I'm not exactly sure what the store's policy is on musical numbers and/or rolling around on their ladders, so perhaps it might be best to hold off on ALL the elation if you can. Though, I highly doubt anyone would blame you if you couldn't contain your excitement. The store is multiple levels and there are an endless amount of categories to explore from "true crime" to "whaling" to "cooking" and "cats"! I'm positive you can even find a section on "pirates". So get lost exploring far off places, daring swordfights, magic spells, people in disguise and if you are lucky you might just step on a creaky floorboard in the mystery section or find a rare treasure hiding in the glorious maze of books.

    Love the ladders...

This book store is a hidden gem in downtown Mesa ! Who would have thought this place was here... So many old books, books by subjects, laddered walls and old squeeky beautiful wooden floors...I felt like I went to another dimension or back in time before big corporate chained book stores took over!!! It gave me a nostalgic feeling being in there. This is a store you need to have at least an hour if not more in. There are 3 levels to the store. Owner Mike is a real down to earth cool guy too!!! There is also a "bargain" rack with books ranging from $1.00-$3.00. I will definitely be back here!!!

Well organized, nice selection. Most used bookstores have closed in past few decades and it's always good to see one still around.

There is so much to appreciate. This one feels a bit more spacious and I found myself in the store for 2 hours just taking my time looking through the aisles. Immediately upon walking in, I was enamored by their setup and selection of books. They have every genre you can think about. Some sections that caught my eye: a dedicated kids' section and a spot for when special guests come. They're also connected to Wildflower so you can come before or after a sip and bite. Changing Hands is so special because they care about community and also support second hand! Staff is eager to help you out and guide you if you have a specific book in mind. You can bring your well loved books in return for store credit and they're quite generous with the credit. They'll take your books depending on the condition and if they need stock for that book. The cherry on top- I love that I'm supporting a local bookstore. And you even get a stamp card with a discount once you've gotten it all stamped out. Their prices are also affordable, and you can choose from new or used books which is nice. Most of their used books are in pristine condition. I support Changing Hands through and through and am so glad I ran across this bookstore. If you're a book lover, you need to go!

It is OBVIOUS the staff here half ass their jobs as not only was this used book damaged to the point that I won't be able to read it in its entirety, I FOUND SOMEONES TAX DOCUMENTS IN THE BOOK and the staff DIDN'T CARE. This is without a doubt the worst store I have ever been to in my life. I am fuming and will not be coming back, which is incredibly disappointing as I was hoping to support a local business but this store is just an absolute nightmare. Review: The selection was alright at best, but the store was laid out horrifically. I struggled to find any of the books I was interested in, and the staff did not seem interested in helping me in any way. I struggled to find any of the Star Wars books I was interested in as they were just scattered randomly throughout the store whereas every single other bookstore I have been to have franchises that large in their own sections. And it wasn't just the Star Wars books, books from numerous series were scattered randomly across the store making it near impossible to find anything you'd actually want. Want the sequel to your favorite book? Well it's not going to be by the first one in the series, that's for sure. And the prices? Insane!! The used book prices are alright at best, thankfully I was lucky enough to find one decent deal on a book I had already wanted. But it was disappointing nevertheless, as a used paperback from the 90s shouldn't be $8. All of their new books are noticeably more expensive than any other bookstore I've ever been to, at least $5 to $10 more than even Barnes and Noble, who already charge too much IMO. And the staff? Horrifically unwelcoming. There was one or two employees there who made me feel welcome, greeting me on entry and being very polite. But when I found someone's PERSONAL TAX DOCUMENTS in the back of a book, the employee who I handed it off to seemed annoyed that I even acknowledged him, despite the fact that I found something incredibly personal in a used book that should have been checked before it was ever put on the shelf. I have NEVER seen something so unprofessional as I could've gone home with the document and taken this man's SSN (obviously I didn't, that's a felony and I'd rather not go to jail). And the cashier who checked me out seemed annoyed that I was even there. I understand that the economy is rough right now and that working in retail really isn't that fun or fulfilling, but at the same time experiences like that with staff are never fun. Work is hard, but I came in and was nothing but polite, minding my own business as I looked for a good book, so I don't understand why the staff couldn't have at least reciprocated with the slightest bit of positivity or kindness. They were obviously miserable and it made me feel unwelcome and has assured me that I will not be returning to this store. If you are looking for solid deals on books in the suburbs of Phoenix, you are much better off going to Bookmans, Half Price Books, or even Zia Records. Bookmans especially, as their prices on used books are unbeatable. Overall, you're better off skipping this one. While you might be able to find a decent deal, you'll be stuck searching for an hour with little to no help from the staff. It was an incredibly frustrating experience.
