When I walked in, the owner was not very friendly. The entire establishment was completely unorganized. I called the owner shortly after leaving asking about the hip hop class, not understanding why the boys can do ballet, tap and jazz, but why my daughter couldn't join the hip hop class. I understand it is her establishment and she can do what she pleases with it. But I, personally found it very sexist. She was rude, unprofessional and dismissive. Needless to say my daughter will not be attending the dance classes.

The actors change, the games change, and funny changes. So let's be straight up honest, it is at 10:00 p.m. for a reason. They sometimes have an early show that is always family friendly. The later shows are still clean, but get a little PG-13 from time to time. Were it me, I'd leave the kids at home with grandma, and take my man out for a night of funny, in your face, comedy fun. The shows recently moved to the Midvale Performing Arts Center which has a great big stage for these comedians to play with. The teams are usually well matched in improv funny. Listen, it is a fun night. Run, do not walk, to laugh until your sides hurt!!

As with many of the other buildings along this road, it's older and has a lot of character-I'll bet it could tell some fascinating stories if the building could talk. I'd go to that play, fo' sho! The seating is fairly comfortable and there's not a bad spot in the house. You can see the stage from every angle. It's a smaller theater, which magnifies the intimacy of the productions put on here. I love that you can see the facial expression of the performers and are so close to the stage. This may not be the fanciest house in town, but there's something about being able to say you've been coming to this theater for generations and the nostalgia that comes along with the place.

There was much discussion some years ago about what to do with the building (it used to be City Hall, then was somewhat shuttered) and thanks to a large grant was turned into a theatre and offices. As a theater, it's quite adequate. The chairs were brought from a local high school auditorium that was being remodeled, so the orange and brown are not so sexy, but are not meant to be permanent. There are ongoing projects like upgrades to the sound system, and they certainly need to keep working on the lighting system. It's better than it was when the building was first re-purposed, but they're still working hard on funding a more robust setup. I've seen many shows, concerts, and other events here and it suits the purpose perfectly. You're apt to find the mayor in the audience some nights; it's just a community theater. While I'm not in love with the setup of the stage (it's not bad from the back, but starts to feel kind of high the further towards the front you sit) it's just great to have little places like this available to community groups. You can rent the theater for a modest fee, or see what shows are running there. Typically you will find community theater productions by The Midvale Arts Council, or shows produced by Pinnacle Acting Group, who do some lesser-known shows with some talented actors. Parking is limited, so you may have to park a block down at the new city hall and hoof it. Grab some food from the Taco street vendor before, and hit up Mexican food Leatherby's afterward. I don't even know where I first heard of Copa but my daughter begged for a chance to sing dance and…read moreact all in one place. The program is quite expensive but they have scholarships available. It runs about 400 a month, 6 hours a week, on a one-year contract. There are also incidentals like costumes, dancewear and t-shirts. There's also a mandatory tour in the summer that will run you about $1,200. My daughter knew no one when she first began but every single time I dropped her off she radiated with excitement. She never once complained about her teachers or her classmates. She made lifelong friends and her talent blossomed. She auditioned with a self tape and halfway through the year, I had her sing the same song that she auditioned with. The difference was night and day. COPA is not just an after-school party. The teachers and curriculum are demanding and the care that they take with these kids couldn't be more professional. My daughter learned so much during her year there and we would have loved to continue except that the commute was killing us. If they ever decide to put a Copa in Park City before my daughter goes to college, we would re-sign in a heartbeat!

If improv ain't your thing, then it's probably best to stay away or come during the early evening for a straight up show. But Quick Wits has been at it for a while and depending on who's there it can be pretty entertaining. If you'll reach back to the recesses of your mind, you'll recall that this location used to be the Comedy Circuit. It's set up just like you'd expect a comedy club turned theater would be. And sure, it's had shinier days, but they do continue to light the marquee out front and since becoming Midvale Main Street Theater a few years back it's in good repair. Parking is on the street (perhaps in back? Don't quote me on that one) and I'm a fan of old Midvale Main. It's not the hip hop happenin' place it could be, but it's a unique place to grab some laughs.

I had recently moved to the area from California and didn't know anyone or of any activities to put my kids in (I have twins boy/girl and they had just turned 2). With us not knowing anyone, I wanted to get them involved in different things to find out what they enjoyed and hopefully find their "niche". My daughter started when she was 2 (just turned 2) and her very first day, my husband took her because I was at work still. The owner, Tammy, explained to my husband the nitty gritty of the studio and the option for her to compete at one competition as well as the end of year (they also do Christmas but she joined after). Of course like most husbands, they listen and retain the information but don't always do the best job of relaying the information and I'm the type of mom that has a lot of questions and is not afraid to ask. I figure the more I know the less chance to get frustrated/confused down the road...but again, that's me. Tammy was more than helpful-- I was blown away and have never forgotten that day. She talked about the competition at Lagoon and I had (obviously) never heard of that and had no idea where it was. She helped explain where it was, the distance, what it would be like -- and this was my daughter's first day at this studio -- and she was 2...TWO! My daughter was on the shy side so I really wanted her to interact with other kids her age besides her brother and this studio was a perfect fit -- so it didn't matter to me that we drive 30-40 minutes ONE WAY once a week. The following year, I signed my son up as well -- to be honest, I was less interested in him learning "dance" and more interested in him getting involved. While he wasn't shy -- he was shy when he was put in something out of his element. This year my twins had a teacher named Erin. To say that she is patient is the most understated compliment I could give her. While my son was not the fun-loving 3 year old that would run around class being silly - he didn't want to be there and he kicked and screamed (literally) and Erin just kept talking to him as if he was acting like the most obedient kid in the class. Tammy (the owner) was so amazing and told me that it would get better. Let me be clear -- it didn't make me sad or hurt me in any way that he was acting like that - he was embarrassing me a little because of his anger and uncooperative attitude. Let's fast forward...my son LOVES Erin still to this day. She never gave up on him and I think that created a very very special bond. She also has an amazing bond with my daughter. I cannot even describe what that feels like as a mother. Now, this year...they are 4. They have yet another amazing teacher, Nery, who pushes them to develop their skills more because they're getting older and they understand things a little more. She's fun with them but she is amazing at keeping them focused. As a parent, you want to know that your kids like who they are with when they are not with you. I have had nothing but a wonderful experience with that. So...so far owner (Tammy) = A+; Teachers = A+++. Oh, they also have cameras so you can watch your kids while in the waiting room...so you can see how your kid(s) are behaving even when you are not right there! If you are the type of parent who is just looking for a break from your kid for 45mins -1hr - this may not be the place for you. Now, if you want a break from your child AND want them to get SOMETHING out of this - whether it be social skills, learning dance skills or just learning to be a good human - THIS is an amazing place. If you have questions, ask!!!! If you have something that you're concerned about, talk to the staff. Never once has anyone not helped me (and I ask a lot of questions) and/or not been 100% pleasant to me. Tammy does a great job running…read morethe place, my daughter's instruction has always been provided with patience, skill and care. It's been amazing to watch her improve and mature. Kickin'it ALWAYS does well in competition so there's a sense of pride having your kid dance here as opposed to other studios. Fees are reasonable and they offer multiple options depending on how much involvement your child wants with their programs. It's a big commitment in time, effort and expense if your kid wants to go down this path but it's no different than soccer, snowboarding or whatever else you decide to support your child in. I don't care for the beauty pageant feel of the competitions. It's a culture that I haven't been exposed to before but I suppose it boils down to different strokes for different folks. I'm just as different but in a drab and dowdy sort of way...
