Randi, Oh Randi! That woman is amazingly talented and sweet! I got my locs done on November 4th, 2013. It took about 13 hours to get my hair done. 13 hours seems like a lot but that time flew. I was actually quite sad when she gave me the heads up that she had 3 more locs to go. While there, the shop was full of love. She ordered food for everyone that was there (3 clients, assistance and shop friends) without anyone needing to ask. We all watched tv on her flat screen and laughed and shared stories of our lives and the history of her business (a great story to hear). She didn't tug or pull on my hair but instead worked diligently and efficiently. She would explicitly let me know what she was doing to my hair and how the technique she is using will affect my hair. After 13 hours, I was way more impressed and happy with my locs. Right out of the shop, I was getting compliments at the train station. Randi gave me an aftercare kit and explained to me how to take care of my locs. After a week, I had a little panic because I thought one of my locs were unraveling and she told me to come in that same day. I came in and she took a look and it wasn't unraveling at all! I also told her that I wasn't sure on how to dry wash my hair and moisturize my hair the way she told me so she did both for me right then and there. No charge, just very kind and supportive words. I've called and texted Randi since at least once a week with questions and she answers them very thoroughly. I do not feel scared to communicate with her (like the way other reviewers were/are), because she makes me feel welcomed and has never made me feel otherwise. Even her assistance is the sweetest person! They both feel like family and has given me open invitation to hang out at the shop with them anytime (an offer I will gladly accept). Let me explain something: Randi is not rude, she takes her business very seriously. She's very honest and wants what's best for you as a client. On another note, Randi can basically do anything and everything when it comes to locs whether they're extensions or impossible knot repairs. However, She does not NEED your money, meaning she will not entertain people who come in with bad vibes or energy. That woman runs a successful business with or without you. I came in with a positive vibe and energy and that's exactly what I received from her. You get what you give! It's Dec 1st and my locs are looking fabulous. Randi is probably one of my favorite people in the world and that is NOT an exaggeration (I invited her to my wedding, so you can believe me when I say that). She has a kind heart and takes her craft very seriously, which I really love. She has been my loctician since 2005. I remember that she put me at ease when I was debating whether to start locs or keep box braids. She assured me that I did not need to cut off all of my hair ( a popular myth) and that I could start the loc process as soon as I was ready. Once I made the decision, she provided verbal(and typed!) directions on how to take care of budding locs with her after care kit. I can't even describe the boost in my confidence as my locs grew due to Randi's care and hair advice. The thing I LOVE is that Randi doesn't rush her customers. She takes her time with each client, offering snacks and soda and a place to just relax if needed. She knows about her clients, takes care of their hair and is genuinely interested in them as people. When I was struggling with work issues, she let me vent (while in her chair) and THEN she put out feelers and found other schools/programs I might want to contact in order to change jobs. She's like a second mother or like that 'tell-it-like-it-is' favorite aunt you feel comfortable telling all of your secrets to. Randi cares for her clients and treats them with respect, which can be hard to find in the hair care industry where businesses only care about how many customers they can get through in a day. That's not the tone she sets in her shop. She loves what she does and it shows in the ways that she takes care of her clients. I'm not into giving reviews cause everybody has they own experience with places. But i will say this i was denied service because i canceled 3 hours before the appointment. I don't even remember why i canceled & this was probably about last year sometime. I called 2 weeks ago and get told they are booked for the next 2 weeks, I wait till today to call and get told some BS that she can't take me cause i canceled before. Okay my review is an emotional one. Please note that everyone has a different Loc journey. I found Randi a few years ago during my previous Loc journey and then found out I had cancer. The chemo caused me to lose my Locs. I was devastated and Randi continued to help me through that lost. After getting off the chemo that caused me to lose my Locs my hair grew back and I wanted my Locs back. Many people call themselves locticians but don't have a clue. I knew Randi would be truthful and precise about how to begin my new Loc journey and she did. On March 26th she provided me with her Loc extension service which took about 8 hours to complete. No crochet needles just those loctician hands Loc by Loc. The results was amazing and has made me feel so much better. Locs to me is not about style but is about spirit and real love for my hair. Our ancestors knew the power of our crown and I truly believe and feel that power with my Locs. First I want to thank Randi for her exceptional talent. I have locs now for 15 years. My Locs had several damaged ends as a result of my coloring, as well as weak spots that were ignored over the years. I was working in Maine on a assignment when I came across Randi Dreadlocks in NYC. I was interviewed on the phone and needless to say Randi was extremely detail oriented, professional and she understood my concerns, because she listened. I will be very honest, she have her professional opinions and she guided me. This was only over the phone. I flew to NYC with my appointment solidified two weeks prior. Randi would not take my deposit until I mailed her my locs, in order for her to able to match my colors for the repair. It was very tense, the mail service was suboptimal. However everything worked out. She sacrificed a special day for me and I am grateful. Happy Birthday Randi! Well I met her she was supposed to reattach my locs, but the day of the appointment or it may have been a day before she calls me about a death in her family, and told me she would reach out to me after. My husband has a huge horrible knot in his long head of hair. Randi seemed knowledgeable and nice enough (despite some of the bad reviews here) when I first spoke to her on the phone. She said come on in and it wasn't until two weeks after that first phone call that we were able to go in (aka today). Not only did she scold us several times for coming in a couple of weeks later (uh sorry this is NYC, I got other stuff to do and some people just flake and don't say anything)... but she and her sister said unnecesarily rude things like "Why do only white people come here with these problems" or "You think that looks good?". We tried to be polite and just laughed along... Obviously his hair is a mess but as a salon you're supposed to help people look/feel good and not in a rude condescending manner. Nevertheless we scheduled an appointment. Three minutes after we left, he got a call from her saying, "I don't want to do the job and best of luck". Why couldn't she have told us that 5 minutes before when we were actually there?? Maybe she does good work when she actually does it, but I find the way the service to be very rude and the way they run is absolutely unprofessional. Updated: I have no reason to lie. The negative energy is from you and your poor service, Randi. Fix that. The negative reviews are entirely correct - Randi is extremely rude and unprofessional. You can even tell by her replies to said reviews. I entered her shop with a (black) child for him to get his hair done. Randi started questioning me about the kids' hair maintenance and was condescending and rude with every answer I gave. When the children's (white) mother came, she went out of her way to be condescending and impolite. I guess she thought she was the authority on Black hair? Speaking down to clients or potential clients is not a good business practice. Mind you - I'm a Black woman with healthy dreadlocks. Randi is a non-Black woman, scolding me about hair maintenance. Weird. Here's the thing: everyone with locs or Black hair knows: there are multiple ways to maintain our hair. It all depends on what works for you, your hair texture, lifestyle, etc. Everything Randi instructed - using different products, wearing a stocking cap at night, blow drying or applying heat - I would never do. But she arrogantly said that she's a professional, (she knows better). Whatever. Randi is the epitome of cultural appropriation. I don't write reviews often, but Randi is awesome! Both her and Nikki were godsends while I was in a desperate situation.. I had one massive monster knot-ball that had formed out of unintentional neglect after one very busy month. It got so bad that I knew I needed professional help. But first I went to another salon (I won't mention names), that made it into a huge matted mess. I knew I needed a dreadlock specialist and that was my only hope. My best friend somehow found Randi's info and contacted her to help me get a big ass knot out of my hair. Randi took the time to talk with my friend on the phone about my "predicament" and she gave him some helpful tips about how he could help me get it out. She said to call back if he was unable to. A short while later when we realized he couldn't do it, he called back and she moved around her schedule to take me in the very next day. I had hair that was waist-length. My only hope was to avoid having to cut it all entirely off and do a pixie cut. The whole thing up until I got to Randi's was very upsetting and traumatic. Nikki took good care of me and got that knot out after several hours. It was by no means painless, but I didn't have to get a pixie cut. I lost a lot of my length, but that was partially in my own request that she just start cutting the knot because my head hurt too much. My hair is still considered long and is well past my shoulders. Nikki cut it into an even line and blow-dried it for me when she was done. I was left with what is actually a pretty cool layered cut and I can wear it down all the time now. Very rock n roll! While I was there, Randi was very hospitable. She fed my friend and I pizza and lots of Halloween candy. She's also funny and made us feel very at home in her comfortable salon. For what it's worth I'm a white gal, and Randi told me that this surprisingly happens frequently and she's dealt with it several times before. I don't even know where to start. I had root wrapping done last night and the results are nothing less than amazing! She is not only a phenomenal loctician but a phenomenal WOMAN! I always had aspirations of dreading my hair but for a while was concern with people's perception or acceptance of a different version of myself. In my ventures in finding a dread lock location that can work with extension i meet Randi. The 1st thing Randi told me was who cares what people think it's what you want and more importantly be true to yourself. I had tons of questions and Randi answered them all with the most details and sincere care. I went forward and got my dreads locked with extension with Randi. It was one of my greatest decisions I've ever made. People stop me till this day to complement me about my dreads. More importantly I love them dearly. This review was actually supposed to be written a number of weeks ago. Back in late Feb. 2014, I had loc extensions put in from a salon downtown (due to having taken the "loctician" and salon owner to court I cannot reveal the names) for the next month and a half, I was feeling light headed which led to my having a dizzy spell. Secondly, my loc just did not look right; needless to say I was not satisfied with the outcome. I did some research, called a few places, checked out some websites-which eventually led me to Dreadlocks by Randi. On her website, one can clearly see the work she has done; most of these salons who boasts having loc extension experience show nothing other than the stylized finished product (that tells me nothing as the consumer). On Randi's site, it shows the various types of locs in addition to the before and after pics....all organic, not filtered. I made the decision to meet her for a consultation. I first called her to set up a day; she was kind, very professional and courteous. I can pick up on her energy that the consultation was going to go well. When I arrived at her salon, I felt at home-it is a cozy space, free of the hustle and bustle that most salons have. Her salon had a calming vibe along with snacks for her clients (BIG PLUS!!) Randi herself is a presence; she kindly greeted me and immediately had me sit down for the consult. She took her time in examining my locs. When she was done, she told me the truth about the loc extensions I had in my hair-I was stunned at what she told me. First, the extensions were not pre made; it was locs from someone else that this person put in my hair, second, it was not attached naturally as the person first told me, it was bonded with glue. More importantly, when I conveyed to Randi that I was dealing with bouts of lightheadedness and dizzy spells, she told me that it was not surprising because with the locs of another person, I was taking in their energy, their past-which could have been negative. It made complete sense to me. My biggest concern was whether or not she can undo the damage that was obviously done-she had it in her power to do so. After my consultation, I went home that evening and cried-cried because I cannot believe that I was deceived (and spent so much money) cried because I found someone who was bold enough to tell me like it was without making me feel like an idiot. The next day I went back to the loctician who originally did my hair, of course she denied everything, looking at me straight in the face without flinching. I could have come out of character and did something, but as stated, she was taken to court and I was compensated. Two weeks later, I had my appointment with Randi; she did tell me it was going to be a lengthy process-I did not care; I had gotten the bullshit locs out and I was ready. Again she made my time there very comfortable, between the soothing music, great conversation, snacks (which included pretzel rods wrapped in turkey, and pastries) I was in heaven LOLOL. I even got to see a number of her clients come in; all of whom have a strong relationship with her. When she was done, I was once more stunned; my locs looked great!!! one length, good thickness and it looked very healthy-I could not believe the miracle she created. Her talent and knowledge is only superseded by her kindness and willingness to listen. She was by no means judging my bad choice of hair care, she educated me without having me feel so low and I appreciated that. The moment I walked out of her salon, I was getting compliments; not once was I complimented on my prior locs-WOW..... I will be seeing her in a number of weeks-my locs despite the new growth (and boy has it grown!) looks fantastic. She has a client for life. read more

Nikki and Randi, please forgive us for this belated review! These two people were literally ANGELS to us. They don't typically do house calls but made an exception to come to the hospital and work for hours and hours ... and hours on an extremely bad hair situation that required EXTREME patience, kindness, and skill. While Randi checked in regularly by phone to see how things were going, Nikki single-handedly salvaged our child's hair when everyone else had given up, because the situation seemed that hopeless. Nikki handled a difficult situation with incredible grace and positivity. These are really good and kind people who are extremely talented and professional at what they do. It doesn't get any better. I previously had dreadlocks for over 10 years for which on August 11, 2011, I was forced to cut off my locks due to health concerns. I held onto the locks as a keepsake and to remind myself of better times. About three months ago, I discovered re-attachments and the search was on. Out of the dozens of websites in several states, I finally came across Dreadlocks by Randi. The page included numerous photo testimonies of the countless services provided. After perusing through the entire page, I was sold. On October 16th I called to schedule an appointment and on October 18th I was headed to undertake the process. Let me start by explaining the atmosphere and culture. Randi purposely only takes on one client at a time to ensure exclusive personal attention is paid to each person. The room is calming and felt like you were stepping into her home. She offered snacks, pop, water and even bought me a healthy lunch (not normally included in services so don't get too excited). As I sat down to begin, she explained that this was collaborative experience. I would have sole discretion as to which lock to choose and where it would be placed. This type of relationship allowed me to fully be involved in my transformation. She worked incredibly fast, but with the skill and precision of a surgeon; rather, an artist. As the process went on I started to slowly feel my self lifting. Catharsis. The worries and weight of my life we're drifting away. There's is no easy way to describe how important having my own dreadlocks back. It's even more difficult to express the way it touches your soul. Im first generation Jamaican, but not Rasta. I have no affiliation, but believe in a higher power and someone was looking over me throughout this experience and as I write this. I was initially nervous about getting locks because I work a corporate job. All the worries and apprehension faded away with each lock I gave Randi. And fully subsided when she completed. Even more so mitigated by the uncanny neatness of each and every lock. If I didn't see the process, I'd swear she took a ruler to measure each part. Waking down Houston I felt the breeze in my hair. Suddenly, I found myself straightening my back. Lifting up my chin. Perhaps even a little swag in my step. Since then, my confidence level increased exponentially. I felt this, but I didn't realize how exuberant it was until I had friends, coworkers, family members, even the cashier at the local deli pointed out that I have changed for the better. And it's true. It's more than that. I. Have. My. Hair. Back. And I owe it all to Randi. I would not and will not trust any single person with my hair. It's been months and that feeling hasn't changed. Not only that, my hair which was previously falling out and not growing due to alapecia and stress grew an inch and a half in two months. I want to start by saying that Randi was so incredibly rude and mean to me, she had me crying in her chair. The only reason I gave her two stars is because her work is good. I went to her for maintenance of my locs, which she had put in for me previously. I had gone on vacation and went swimming with them and they really did need maintenance. I was prepared for her to say something to me about the bad state of my locs and laugh it off. I was not prepared for her to spend the entire 2 1/2 hours belittling, chastising, and reprimanding me for what I had done to my own hair. I was literally crying for the entire time because she just did not let up or stop about how I had not taken care of the locs in the exact way she had prescribed. In my mind, I could light my hair on fire if I so chose, and when I pay you to style it, your job is to deal with what I bring to you and do your best to make it look nice. I do not need to be screamed at like a child. She was not doing a favor for me...I was paying her $200 to do my hair. My advice to you....find someone else to do your hair....you don't need such nasty, angry energy to be touching your locs. read more

I've had dreadlocks for four years, and they have never looked as good as they do today. I saw Randi this morning in her shop on the Lower East Side. She has the best locks I've ever seen on a white person! When I walked in, she had just done two African-American guys' hair, and they both looked great. She was equally competent with my Caucasian locks. She has her own method, which I like much better than the way I've had it done previously, where the roots are tied with string. Randi uses synthetic hair to wrap the roots and ends. Caucasian hair doesn't lock on the ends, which drives me nuts, and I've tried keeping them blunt with rubber bands. No stylist I've ever seen before has known how to deal with them, saying, "White people's dreads are just stringy on the ends, that's how it is." Randi, however, wrapped the ends with the synthetic hair, and they look exactly like I've always wanted them to. Her assistant Gigi gave me a lovely shampoo and now my locks smell delicious. I would never recommend Randi to anyone. How she handles her business is crazy. She charges alot of money and its not worh it. I made 2 appts with her and she cancelled them on me at the last minute. I paid her 600.00 and she only did 15 locks on me. When i went to the salon to get my hair styled her girlfriend harassed and terrorized me the whole time saying that Randi does not want to be friends she is only doing my hair for the business which was fine with me. I am indian and I have long black hair. I would never allow that women to ever touch my hair. I was on a mission to get dreadlock extensions and from my first encounter with Randi via cell, to the consultation and the finished product, I have nothing but positive things to say. Randi is very accommodating and she is willing to answer any questions. I was very nervous given the condition of my hair and the fact that I was committing to a permanent style. Now that all is said and done I could not be happier. Randi keeps a very clean and inviting salon atmosphere and her assistant and clientele were all friendly. Given that you potentially stand to be in her shop for hours depending on what style you get, she succeeds in making your time their comfortable. Randi has excelled at providing a great skill for doing hair and in a comfortable environment. Since having my hair done I have received endless compliments. I will continue to see her for maintenance every few month since I know she will help me keep my hair looking great. read more

I rarely write reviews but due to the ridiculous negativity aimed at Randi, I feel the need to chime in. I've been going to Randi for several years after having my locks done at two other salons, one in Manhattan and one in Brooklyn. She is, without a doubt, the most fairly priced and the most attentive stylist I've ever had. I hear her on the phone often with potential customers and she is always polite and helpful. She clearly knows what she's doing if you look at the before and after pictures on her website not to mention the fact that she has locks growing down her back. She has numerous regular clients from all ethnic backgrounds who return to her clearly because she knows locks. called randi asked about maintaining dreadlocks if you have straight oily hair she said it was no problem and tells me you don't need to maintain dreadlocks yes they need to be maintained they need to be palm rolled everyday for first few months she doesn't know anything about dreadlocks when it comes to white hair and she's white that's the even sadder part(albino African American obiviously judging by her lack of knowledge when it comes to white people hair). she just wants money she put me down for appointment and I didn't even actually make an appointment and told her I would call her back when I could make an appointment and she just's put me down for an appointment and when I didn't show up for the appointment I never actually made she told me to never call or make appointment and that it wasn't good business last time I checked booking someone for an appointment when they never made one is bad business beware of this woman don't go to her salon if you want dreads or dread maintenance. read more

I did like the person Randi. She bought a whole pizza and gave me a slice, nice. BUT...What is with all the junk candy? That's scary! I think most candy is a poison and that's why I say it's scary. I'm not sure about going back because I wanted my hair in a few cornrows, but the sister, not Randi, didn't perform the cornrows on my hair in it's nappy state. But I didn't state for the record that I wanted her to do the cornrows on my nappy head of hair; so her method is to blow out the naps and straighten the hair as much as possible by the heated blow out and then work the cornrows. In that way the cornrows were so small and flat and that is not what I wanted. So how to get want I want is still an issue for now. I like the location and the ambience. I think of going back and asking the young lady if she is accustomed to doing cornrows on nappy hair. Yeah, I'll do it like that because of the things I liked there. Right?
