Rustic Roots Winery - Dry Pear Cider 2014

This is a seriously underrated gem in the overall spectrum of Okanagan dining. Sure, locals flock there for brunch or to scope out the live tunes, but do yourself a favour and if you happen to be in Peach City visiting, head there right now and tell me if I'm wrong. First off, walking in, the aromas from the medley of spices hit you like a bat! This is a serious food worshipper's joint and not to be outdone in any way by its fine dining counterparts nearby. The atmosphere is funky, but still retains a bistro air to it. It was fairly dead when I walked in, but it was at the weird hour between lunch and dinner, and the farmer's and artisan's market was just shutting down. My server was laid back, but extremely attentive, easy to chat with, and recommended me one of the best dishes I've had in months: the Tuna Melt! I ordered a bottle of Rustic Roots Winery (Cawston, BC - near Keremeos) dry pear cider. This was a huge hit and I'd recommend trying it if you're like me and despise sweet ciders. Once my main dish arrived, I was starving and ready to eat. I have eaten out at countless restaurants and I usually go for something I can't or wouldn't make at home. Man, let me tell you... this tuna melt was incredible. Tuna was cooked perfectly for this kind of dish. The bread was sourdough and just enough to fill you up. The arugula salad had just the right kick and wasn't doused in oil. The smoked cheese sauce oozed over the melt and was made from scratch, which was the icing on the cake! So delicious and creamy. The entire dish was slightly rich, but in the best possible way. Absolutely go check this quirky little place out sometime, you'll be glad you did! The chef knows his stuff. Keep it up! Penticton is thriving when it comes to superb eats!

Food is pretty good. Main attraction here is the live music, wide variety of performances, intimate venue.

For the first night of Peachfest they did admirably amid a city wide staff shortage and a line stretching down the street. The steak sandwich was so good I'm guessing they hand pick their sirloin and cut their steaks in house. The seafood pasta was as good as we've had ocean side. Amazing job by the hostess keeping a pace that never crashed the kitchen and I assume the owner already knows the three cooks on tonight are some of the most capable in the Okanagan!

I think that's probably true. My kid and I heard that this place has an awesome happy hour deal: purchase a drink from 2-5pm, get a free pound of chicken wings. And the wings look great, with lots of choices of sauces! We had hoped to come here for this HH deal but unfortunately, the time never worked out. So we came here for an early lunch instead one hot day. There were very few diners when we arrived, so we had our pick of tables. We chose to sit at the outdoor patio, as it was a lovely day. Our server was super nice. My kid ordered a Wagyu burger with fries and a flight of beers. (One this day of the week, any Wagyu item was $2 off. They have certain specials every day of the week). I usually have a salad for lunch, so I ordered the vegetable salad with beets and goat cheese with its honey Dijon poppyseed vinaigrette. The flight of beers was quite good (according to my kid, who enjoyed them). Her burger and fries were also quite good. (I had a bite and it was tasty). 4/5 stars for her meal. My salad, however, was beyond sad. It was 95% lettuce, a thimble-full of goat cheese crumbles, zero beets, a few wilted cucumber spears, and, again, 95% lettuce. (At least the lettuce was fresh and clean, I'll give it that! But for $17, it was 95% lettuce! I am not exaggerating. And the vinaigrette looked and tasted exactly like a bottled Kraft dressing I've recently had. It did not taste like honey or Dijon at ALL). I'd give my salad 1/5 stars. And that's being kind. (I returned 75% of it uneaten. Even my kid wasn't up for it - and she usually finishes ALL my meals). One item on the menu sounded too good to pass up: their "peaches in a blanket" dessert. It takes 20 minutes to make. We ordered it - and it was the highlight of the whole meal. (Sorry I did not get a photo. We ate it immediately lol!). It was truly delicious, and not obscenely large in size (I find it a turn-off when portions are too huge. This was sized just right). Truly delicious. 5/5. Side note: the bathrooms here, in the back of the restaurant, are quite nice. There are three of them, each nicely decorated, and roomy, one with a large baby table. All super clean. I was impressed by the washrooms! Back to the food... regarding our meals, our dishes were very inconsistent. I'm giving this place a 3/5 stars, totally middle of the road, just because I think your experience will depend on what you order and what day you order it.

First, same agitated servers from the previous owner. New owners seem to like catering to the regulars. Place hasn't changed other than it getting worse. Also, they no longer have dark or amber beers, just light beers. I tried ordering a Richard's Red before, they got rid of it., Naramata Nut Brown, nope, so I settled on a canned Guinness; what can go wrong you ask? Well, I stepped out to grab something from my vehicle, 30 seconds max.,when I got back, the beer was at my table. Now, I know how a Guinness should look once it's poured, I ordered it dozens of times from other reputable establishments; once poured, hopefully in front of you, the widget in the can activates the nitrogen gas and you have the cascading effect in the glass; Nope nothing. Even the head looked soapy. I asked the server about it and she told me that she just opened it. No cascading effect, no decent head, tasted like petroleum. Even one of the owners mentioned that the Keg pour was better than the cans, not likely. He doesn't know what he's talking about. Long story short, crabby servers, unknowledgeable owner, sad atmosphere and unclean facility. If you're looking for an old school, uneventful pub, this is the place. If you're looking for a half decent pub, go up the street, The Hub, Slackwater and Neighborhood Brewing are always better options. Haply drinking!
