Great location (on the way to Timberline/Canaan), top of the line rental equipment, excellent pricing, and superb customer service!

This is 2.5 stars really because while meh, I've experienced better (and I NEVER say "meh"), you…read morereally need this Ski Barn location because if, like me, you don't ski or snowboard much, you won't have all the shit you need. Thus, Ski Barn earns a three-star rating for being in the right place at the right time. The prices are semi-high, although the shop offers a 10 percent discount for college students (and you best believe I'm still milking my undated GW college ID from last year). The selection is weak, but that is usually the case with noncorporate boutiques and stores. The customer service, in true Canaan style, was pretty much nonexistent. I picked up some socks, snowboard mittens and a sunglasses band. We also rented our snowboard equipment from Ski Barn because the quality and selection here were better, and the prices cheaper, than Canaan Valley Resort, where we were staying and 'boarding. I'll be back, I'm sure, not out of desire, but necessity.

Definitely forget renting at either Timberline or Canaan Valley and head to the conveniently…read morelocated Ski Barn (mid-way between both ski resorts). Equipment rental prices are much more affordable at the Barn and you can pick up all those expensive necessities that you need, but might not necessarily want to make the investment in (like ski bibs, helmets, etc.). If you reserve online, you get a 10% discount on your total, which is always helpful. I will say that on the two occasions I visited recently, at the first visit - the staff handled a large crowd with a much appreciated polite efficiency, however on our return, when the store was empty - I found it to be that cliche ski rental place experience, a bunch of staff standing around with somewhat of a snitty attitude that they had to process our returning rentals and interrupt their story (which was about 'poop' btw). So, while customer service might be hit or miss, this is pretty much your best option for skiing around Davis.

If you can, rent your skis off the mountain or get the insurance. These shysters will try to cheat…read moreyou otherwise. I rode for a day and a half on nothing but snow and ice. I never took them off course, never did jumps, never went over rocks or sticks. When I returned them, they asked if I bought the insurance and when I said no, they blamed me for two gashes on the skis. If those gashes came from me, then their skis are soft and you shouldn't rent from them anyway. But I'm certain they weren't. There is absolutely nothing I rode over that could have caused that. I should have just walked out but instead paid their ridiculous fee. But lesson learned. Not getting my skis from them again and since they are the main shop in town, I suggest you get your skis out of town (I never had problems with the shop at the bottom of the mountain, but they are connected).

Just rented skis and poles (I have my own boots) for two days and was very happy. I was assisted…read moreby Levi, who was really knowledgeable about the skis and was able to match them to my ability (advanced Intermediate), performance goals (agile in turns but stiff and secure on ice), and the demands of the mountain given current conditions. Not surprisingly, I ended up on their Demo skis (I am very demanding), but those were still cheaper than even the regular sport skis at the Snowshoe rental places -- and significantly cheaper ($17/day) than Demo skis would have been at Snowshoe. They put a fresh coat of wax on them before giving them to me -- a very nice touch (and much appreciated). I recommend reserving your skis 24 hours in advance online to get the 10% discount. Don't worry about which level of ski to rent (regular, sport, or demo) as they will apply the discount to whatever level of ski you end up with. The store is located on the mountain near the Silver Creek ski area which is about 2.6 miles from the main Villiage Ski areas (and where night skiing occurs). We picked up the skis by car when we first arrived the evening before at no extra charge, but it is also accessible via the snowshoe bus. Note: While writing this I read a negative review from last year regarding insurance. I did not get insurance, and noone mentioned anything when I returned the skis with several course-of-skiing gouges/scratches on the bottoms from ice and rocks on the slopes from grooming so perhaps last year was a one-off. You should not have to pay for damage from normal on-piste skiing.

Tube Park Review…read more This review is specific to the Tube Park. Highly recommend getting tickets ahead of time online. All sessions for the day were sold out when we visited. The lodge area for the tube park is very small, so don't expect to be able to change clothing quickly inside due to how busy it is. There's a fire place inside and a huge fire pit outside. Very small concession inside with about 8-10 small snack items to choose from. The staff here are top notch - very kind to each other and talkative to visitors. 10 minutes before the session starts, the group gets a safety briefing and reviews the rules. There's a nurse/medic on site. This is fun for the whole family. 1200 feet long and very fast. Be sure to read the requirements online for kids. Extra safety precautions are taken onsite for young kids.

I was disappointed with my stay at Canaan Valley Resort. As someone with disabilities, I found the…read moreproperty to be less accessible than expected, making it difficult to fully enjoy the experience. One of the most frustrating moments was at dinner. Our tour group was told we could not sit by the windows and enjoy the view because we were "with a tour and not paying customers." Considering many of us paid nearly $2,000 for this trip, that was insulting. We were also not allowed to order from the regular menu and pay ourselves if we wanted something else. Unfortunately, the meal provided left me sick for going on 2 days. The resort itself also had several maintenance and convenience issues. The ice machine on our floor was broken, the snack machine and soda machine was nearly empty, and the shower had VERY poor water pressure. The gift shop closed before 7 p.m., making it impossible to purchase basic necessities when needed. There was also very little to do in the evenings. The pool closes at 8 p.m., and by 7 p.m. most activities and amenities seemed to be shut down, leaving guests with few options other than returning to their rooms to watch TV. Overall, the resort did not meet my expectations, particularly regarding accessibility, guest experience, and customer service.
