Dry Dock has been a very anticipated opening, because for an oceanside city, Portland has only a handful of restaurants with outdoor seating on the water. The original Dry Dock was not great food but was a fun divey atmosphere. Would the new, higher end version be an overpriced tourist trap? The answer is no, mostly not. There's a couple of tourist trap entrees to get stuck in (a $58 lobster? That's just cruel), but as a whole, this an ideal new addition to the Portland waterfront. The restaurant is absolutely huge, with three bars and seating for 300 between indoors and out. But they haven't quite mastered how to seat people. On both of my visits I requested outdoor seating. Upon being brought out, we see a perfect empty table in the sun with gorgeous ocean views. And they proceed to bring us instead to a same-sized shady table facing a parking lot. I was able to be moved to the better table both times, but it shouldn't take so much effort. And that's the biggest knock against Dry Dock...for such a prime location, there's maybe five good tables with ocean views. And if you want sun, you better get there before 5 pm. In order to write this review, I felt obligated to try all six cocktails. The Daily Tot was my favorite (rum, banana, almond and lime) but all were creative, fun and fortunately less sweet than the descriptions. For food, the crab roll ($30), blackened fish sandwich ($19) and fried cod cheeks ($20) were some of the best on the waterfront, and certainly better than nearby Porthole and sister restaurant Luke's Lobster. All sandwiches come with a heaping portion of fries, which strongly resemble McDonalds. I'm sorry, but I much prefer these frozen fries to fresh, which quickly degrade into a greasy and soggy mess. I think these might be my new favorite fries in town. As a local, only the double decker seafood platter ($82) was disappointing for the price. There's just better places to get nearly everything on it, for cheaper. But for tourists, it's easily worth it. Service was perfect on both visits. The new Dry Dock is barely recognizable from the old dive. It's massive and trendy. But it mostly lives up to the hype, with better food than other waterfront spots. I finally made it to try out the new Dry Dock reopen! At first glance walking into the restaurant I was a little underwhelmed as the decor was very bland. I felt like I was walking into a chain restaurant, I was expecting for for a maine vibe... not the case. It felt dry, empty, nothing calling out to me to have a memory of this establishment! The service was great, bartenders were very attentive with very quick food service. For the food I started with the shrimp ceviche which the shrimp was incredibly fresh in the ceviche was very delicious but the corn chip selection was honestly terrible! The fried chicken sandwich was subpar nothing special or something that I would ever be like I have to come back for this again, they really need to reconsider their French selection because they were just awful tasted like they came out of a frozen bag straight into a fryer just very generic. Another part that I really disliked about this restaurant was their plating selection. The plates felt like they came from an old Denny's very dated! I also was very disappointed in the plating of the food in general. The proportions were fine, but I dislike when there's empty space on a plate. I don't think I'll be returning back to dry as it just wasn't something to remember or place I would bring family friends to for a fun dining night out too many great options in Portland and this one I was expecting more from but was pretty disappointed in overall. read more

Went with friends on a Thursday evening. Nice space. Sat downstairs in a booth near the bar. Service was good and server gave us time to chat before we put our food order in. The open space makes it a bit loud even when it's not full. Our table had mussels, fish chowder, chorizo and mussel soup, winter slaw, winter salad and an oyster slider. Everything was good. Winter slaw had some fans but I found it just ok. Winter salad was delicious as were the mussels. Oyster slider was good, but on 1/2 a hot dog bun vs potato bun, so maybe an off night. Ok, but then why is there a chemical bomb bright red fake cherry in my drink? Why collect the fries McDonald's is throwing out & put them on my plate? You take a highly reputable seafood organization (Luke's) and bring in a reputable chef, add an iconic address, dress it up, reinvent it....should be spectacular.... Instead you strip most of the character, make it a processed hospitality experience, and completely underwhelm the menu? Went from so excited to so disappointed. Am I writing them off? No. Do I believe in the group behind this? Yes. My point? Be Better....what I saw was looks more like cheap commercialism. This will be highly successful commercially, but its current form is tourist trap mediocrity. In short, I'd accept the robotic, unformed efforts of the server & I'd accept the sterilized version of this grand space....if you blew my socks off with the food. Was excited to go to Dry Dock based on the reopening and very good reviews. Love the indoor dining areas! It was a gorgeous day so we sat outside where there was a nice water view and the server was very sweet and prompt. My cousin ordered a glass of wine and they were kind enough to let her sample two white wines since they only have Pinot Grigio by the bottle and that's her favorite. She picked one of them and when our drinks came out her wine was in an 8oz plastic cup - which we understand because it was outdoors - BUT the cup wasn't quite a third full and cost $12. We were told that the pour was 5 1/2 ounces. It was 4oz, if that much. (The T-shirt motto is "Pouring Strong"?!?) We weren't looking for extra, just a reasonably sized glass of wine. My cousin and her daughter were happy with their Fish and Chips and Haddock sandwich. I ordered a caesar salad and asked if I could have the shrimp blackened but that wasn't possible, they could only make it with shrimp cocktail. I love going to Portland once or twice a year and this time was a spontaneous trip so my boyfriend and I didn't have anywhere for a dinner reservation. I'm so glad we didn't at our usual spots because we walked around and ended up at Dry Dock. We got seated by the window and had a great night view of the water and some of the other restaurants. My boyfriend got one of the cocktails served in a fish which was such a fun surprise! I got 3 oysters for myself and they were easily some of the freshest I've ever had. We split the mussels, an amazing choice. That broth would've been eaten by me as a soup it was so good. My boyfriend got the steak frites, perfectly cooked with fries and a side arugula salad along with an aioli. He was obsessed! I ended with the tuna crudo and it was so fresh and delicious.
