We were cruising around the Old Port having drinks and apps before dinner. We popped into Dry Dock for drinks and to sit on the upstairs patio. We immediately got on the waitlist for the upstairs decks & headed to the bar for drinks. Service was quick and friendly. Drink menu was good list had many options. Bartenders were knowledgeable about the drinks. I was a little disappointed I wanted to add a little fruit puree from one of the other drinks to mine and they stated most are premade so they don't have the fruit purée available as a mixer...bummer. After about 20-25 minutes we went up to the deck. Great place. Nice little view of the bay. We saw a harbor seal while having drinks. We ordered the mussels for an app. Let me tell you WOW. They may be the most succulent large muscles and broth I ever had. Muscles are a favorite dish,we usually try them at those restaurants. This was not just an ordinary wine broth, this was straight clam chowder!! I seriously asked for a spoon so I could "drink" the left over broth. Hands down most delicious mussels. Only complaint, I could've used more bread. Ha ha Must try!! read more

I stopped in here today with my family today for lunch for the first time. We were able to sit down right away and all of the staff was pleasant and friendly. We were also fortunate enough to sit outside on their upstairs patio, though the interior decor would have been pretty cool to check out. For a beverage, my wife and I decided to split the Scorpion Bowl. It wasn't fishbowl sized like some places but it definitely had a good enough kick for the both of us to get a little buzz off of it. For the kids to eat, they got a cheeseburger and chicken fingers, both with fries and chocolate milk. The Cheeseburger was pretty run of the mill and our somewhat picky daughter had no problem with her chicken fingers with ranch to dip. The fries (for all 4 of us) were very McDonald's-esque plus a little extra salt to boot. Pretty good but nothing crazy. My wife got a lobster roll with the gluten free bun (she's celiac) and seemed to enjoy it pretty thoroughly, especially with the extra melted butter for the top. She finished the whole thing and seems like she got a pretty decent portion. I got the fish and chips (though the tuna couscous special was pretty tempting, just not at $46). The fish wasn't really an overly impressive portion and the tartar sauce wasn't much to my liking at all. All in all, this place was just OK. They seemed a little on the high end pricewise for what they had to offer and relied pretty heavily on the fries to fill us up instead of focusing on the entree as the star of the show. With all the other great places around the Old Port, I'd have to say this isn't a place I'm going to go out of my way to go back to. read more

After a morning of looking at the ocean we decided we really needed some seafood in our lives for lunch. Dry Dock looked like a lovely location and relatively quiet so we got a seat. They sat us at the end of the bar by the oysters. It's a pretty tucked away spot and unfortunately there was a miscommunication and I don't think the server that was assigned to that area knew we were there so we waited at least 15 minutes. As soon as we informed the host they were extremely apologetic and corrected it right away. Service was stellar after that. Mistakes happen! Overall it's a beautiful airy space with two floors. There's also a deck that overlooks the harbor and I plan to tackle the stairs to sit on it when we're there in good weather! The food was fabulous. Seeing as I was seated in front of the oysters of course I had to get some. They had three varieties available this day and they were all delicious and fresh, ranging in flavor from briny to buttery. I decided to get some vegetables in so I ordered a kale Caesar. I'm not usually crazy for Caesar salad but the kale really improves the dish for me and I enjoyed it a lot. Of course I had to balance that.. so we shared some fried calamari. It was so tender and crisp with some hot picked peppers mixed in which is my favorite. My husband had a grilled fish sandwich which ended up being one of his favorite meals of the trip. It was a Fresh piece of haddock grilled with an herbaceous seasoning served on a super soft bun. I have tried dry dock a couple times since it reopened. I love the outdoor patio in the summer where you can head out there and grab a drink from the outdoor bar. It is limited in what you can order but has most options. I sat a the bar one time and got the chicken sandwich, it was good! I just wish the fish piece was a little bigger as the bun covered up most of the fish, but that could have just been a one time thing. I have also sat upstairs and the vibe is very nice upstairs even in the colder weather. I got the burger and it was very good with the special sauce. I have been to Dry Dock a couple of times now, and I'm a big fan! Initially, I had some reservations (as usual when a new place opens up in Portland). Is it going to be a tourist trap?! Is the food going to be mediocre?! Based on my experience, the answer is no to both. The food has been incredible, the staff exceptional, and the space impressive. It's so expansive -- two whole floors, ocean views, Commercial Street views, bar seating... there's something for everyone. Unlike its sister restaurant, Luke's Lobster, Dry Dock doesn't seem to get as packed (which I absolutely love), although that may change during the summer. We've tried a lot of their menu and found everything quite delicious. Their burger is one of my husband's favorites in town. Their chorizo soup and chowder are both to die for. We recently had the friend cod cheeks, and it was a hit. Their dips are also phenomenal. The ceviche was the only dish we've had that didn't wow us. The addition of sweet potato was an interesting choice that I don't think added a lot of flavor. Prices are fair when considering location and quality. Overall, we've had a great experience at Dry Dock and will continue going back there. I think it's one of the best restaurants on Commercial St. read more

If you're looking for a place where the service is good.. SKIP THIS ONE!! Walked in and talk to the hosts who we THOUGHT said take any spot outside. Went to grab a table outside and one of the woman servers gave us an attitude saying that we can't sit anywhere we want and that if we wanted to do that, go back inside. So we did, went back inside and asked for a table inside (so we wouldn't have to have that woman as our server) and then we heard her telling another server to NEVER let anyone sit wherever they want! "It has never been that way and never will be." Safe to say we went across the street to Porthole!! :) ALSO, there's no happy hour during the summer! We visited Dry Dock to experience Maine lobster. The reviews for the restaurant were good, so we decided to splurge a bit. We ordered two lobster dinners, one baked haddock dinner, one cheeseburger (please don't judge) and a kids meal. The lobsters came with broiled small potatoes and corn on the cob which were tasty. The lobsters were a bit tough and not as flavorful as we were expecting - maybe overcooked? The haddock meal was odd and also lacking in flavor - it was a pile of pureed potatoes on top of the fish with some tomatoes maybe baked in. The cheeseburger was dry and the fries seemed like they had been waiting all day for someone to order a burger. We paid $40 to park there and our bill was over $200 for 4 adults and 1 child not including any alcoholic beverages or dessert. The bathrooms were surprisingly not clean - trash cans were overflowing with dirty floors and messy sinks. We were there between 5 and 6pm on a Wednesday night when there were few people there. We should have taken that as a sign but we had already paid (a lot) for parking... Our server was fun and interesting and very attentive without being overbearing. She was really knowledgeable about the food and was the highlight of the visit. So $300 later, we felt like guppie tourists who fell for the reviews and romance of a Maine dockside experience. I looked up Dry Dock for lobster rolls, they did not disappoint that's for sure! I got the garlic brown butter roll and my husband got the cold lobster roll. Both were served with a large portion of French fries! They definitely don't skimp on the lobster! Service was just ok, they were not very busy when we went but we had to wait forever for everything. We asked for cocktail sauce and were almost done with our meal when we got a tiny serving of cocktail sauce. We had to ask for soda refill and were ready to leave when we finally got our refill. Recently just re-opened with the same name as before DRY DOCK. One of my favorite nieces works for the main office doing graphic design. She's very good at her job & loves what she does. Our wait person Jeff was a true hoot of a person. Thank you Jeff for doing all you do to make our meal such a success. Jeff a true gentleman with a gift of gab. So all in all I forgot to take pictures of all our meals which were memorable. We started off with a small tower which was plenty except I didn't get any lobster The rest of the tower was very good & fresh, a good appetizer to share. One of us got 2 halibut sliders & a ceasar salad with no complaints. The fish & chips my wife had was great. The fries perfectly done & a very tasty coleslaw. How was the tartar sauce you ask? No idea I wasn't offered any to try. Next up brother in law & I both had the halibut special of the night. We both enjoyed it but truth be told both pieces were overcooked & dry. Usually I speak up at restaurants & voice my pleasure or displeasure. Tonight I was on my best behavior. The restaurant was loud & very full of paying customers. We were walking around trying to find a good place with a great atmosphere to eat that didn't have an hour wait when we stumbled upon the Dry Dock. We walked in & we were greeting immediately by 2 friendly gentlemen & put on the waiting list but sat at the bar because it was faster & full service. We ordered calamari which was delicious & had a little kick to it. We also ordered the double decker tower with lots of fresh seafood to choose from, oysters, clams, ceviche. Lobster, shrimp & tuna. Such a great spot on the water. Came here with my girlfriends recently for drinks and snacks and we had a great time. The space is bright and airy, there are 2 floors of seating and outdoor patios as well with water views. The food we had was solid, good bar food but limited options for vegetarians so take that into consideration. Definitely a seafood spot. Such a great experience here - easily got an early afternoon reservation with a lovely table overlooking the docks. Service was prompt and friendly! Great ambiance with nautical decor and a fun touch is the lobster tank right in the dining room! Doesn't get much fresher than that! Speaking of lobster, the lobster roll was incredible. Tons of claw meat for a fair price, hot & buttered was delicious on a soft and fresh roll. Comes with a pile of well seasoned fries. Tried the chef's special appetizer, "fish of the day", which was a swordfish skewer with a delicious sauce. Husband loved the blackened fish sandwich! The drinks were a real star here - get the Admiral Nelson! A delicious spicy cocktail that comes in an adorable fish glass. I may not have been to the original Dry Dock, but I am sure happy that I've been to the reopened version! I tend to stay away from a lot of places on Commercial St. because the tourist traffic can get out of hand, prices are high, and quality can be meh, but I think this is a place that is clearly for the locals too. When I went with friends recently we ordered a bunch of things to share (lots of great small-er plates for that here, though let me emphasize that "small" is still pretty generous). First up was a bunch of oysters, and while I'm never gonna be mad at a Maine oyster served to me anywhere, these were exceptional and shucked to perfection (there's an art to it!). Fried cod cheeks: delicious with a super light, crunchy batter; no grease here, my friends. The ceviche was scallops with sweet potato, and I admit I was initially wary b/c sweet potatoes aren't really my thing, but these balanced out nicely with some kind of spice and just enough brine. My favorite (hard to choose) was probably the smoked fish dip with Saltines: oh. wow. Talk about knowing when simple is best: this was the perfect amount of smoked and whipped to keep it light; delicious! There was a mussel and chorizo stew that was yummy as well, with a nice slow warm burn of spiciness. I'd eat all of these again for sure, and there's more I'd love to try--and with super friendly service and great views out over the port, you can't go wrong. read more

Such a disappointment, especially compared to the previous Dry Dock incarnation. The barn-like second floor is loud and charmless, and the service was slow and indifferent. The haddock in the fish and chips was overcooked, the breading was salty and tasteless, and the fries were undercooked and over salted. We used to come to Dry Dock; as in several years ago; so we had decided to return with friends - many of whom had been here with us for Dry Dock OG. Long story short it was amazing. And, we were a party of 10 - got a seat, ordered drinks, ordered food, and were pretty amazed at how fast it arrived! They did what you normally don't see in fast casual restaurants that was right out of fine dining - different servers all brought out the food together and placed them where they needed to go! We had one issue w/the Lobster Salad, but it was resolved by our great server Bry even before we realized it was an issue. The seafood was so fresh, yummy. Fries were totally worth it - even my granddaughter was happy! (the rest of us are all senior citizens, she is just a senior in high school school!). Pricing wasn't quite as good as the OG Dry Dock, but it was representative of the Old Port and frankly the food, service and place was well worth it. read more

The standout of the visit was the service from Madison. She was friendly, attentive, and genuinely welcoming without hovering. Dry Dock has been a very anticipated opening, because for an oceanside city, Portland has only a handful of restaurants with outdoor seating on the water. The original Dry Dock was not great food but was a fun divey atmosphere. Would the new, higher end version be an overpriced tourist trap? The answer is no, mostly not. There's a couple of tourist trap entrees to get stuck in (a $58 lobster? That's just cruel), but as a whole, this an ideal new addition to the Portland waterfront. The restaurant is absolutely huge, with three bars and seating for 300 between indoors and out. But they haven't quite mastered how to seat people. On both of my visits I requested outdoor seating. Upon being brought out, we see a perfect empty table in the sun with gorgeous ocean views. And they proceed to bring us instead to a same-sized shady table facing a parking lot. I was able to be moved to the better table both times, but it shouldn't take so much effort. And that's the biggest knock against Dry Dock...for such a prime location, there's maybe five good tables with ocean views. And if you want sun, you better get there before 5 pm. In order to write this review, I felt obligated to try all six cocktails. The Daily Tot was my favorite (rum, banana, almond and lime) but all were creative, fun and fortunately less sweet than the descriptions. For food, the crab roll ($30), blackened fish sandwich ($19) and fried cod cheeks ($20) were some of the best on the waterfront, and certainly better than nearby Porthole and sister restaurant Luke's Lobster. All sandwiches come with a heaping portion of fries, which strongly resemble McDonalds. I'm sorry, but I much prefer these frozen fries to fresh, which quickly degrade into a greasy and soggy mess. I think these might be my new favorite fries in town. As a local, only the double decker seafood platter ($82) was disappointing for the price. There's just better places to get nearly everything on it, for cheaper. But for tourists, it's easily worth it. Service was perfect on both visits. The new Dry Dock is barely recognizable from the old dive. It's massive and trendy. But it mostly lives up to the hype, with better food than other waterfront spots. If you can score the perfect table, you might even have the single best view in the city. read more

I finally made it to try out the new Dry Dock reopen! At first glance walking into the restaurant I was a little underwhelmed as the decor was very bland. I felt like I was walking into a chain restaurant, I was expecting for for a maine vibe... not the case. It felt dry, empty, nothing calling out to me to have a memory of this establishment! The service was great, bartenders were very attentive with very quick food service. For the food I started with the shrimp ceviche which the shrimp was incredibly fresh in the ceviche was very delicious but the corn chip selection was honestly terrible! The fried chicken sandwich was subpar nothing special or something that I would ever be like I have to come back for this again, they really need to reconsider their French selection because they were just awful tasted like they came out of a frozen bag straight into a fryer just very generic. Another part that I really disliked about this restaurant was their plating selection. The plates felt like they came from an old Denny's very dated! I also was very disappointed in the plating of the food in general. The proportions were fine, but I dislike when there's empty space on a plate. I don't think I'll be returning back to dry as it just wasn't something to remember or place I would bring family friends to for a fun dining night out too many great options in Portland and this one I was expecting more from but was pretty disappointed in overall. read more
