Outstanding oysters and noms! The Freeport Oyster Bar is an unassuming little place tucked just behind the Freeport Historical Society. There is plenty of parking in the many lots that are smattered around the popular LL Bean destination. They oysters are shucked as you order them, they come with lemon, and mignonette sauce, we tried ours with a side of kelp relish (not for me cause it was a lil spicy but my nephew was all about it). Oysters are briny served over ice, lots of liquid still in the shell for slurping fun. They also have other things to go with your oysters like soups, salads, snacks like popcorn and smoked salmon dip. They have something on the menu called Tinned Fish Plate - I'm going back soon to try that cause tinned fish is up my alley. Add lobster rolls and hot dogs to the list of yums! This is a place for locals and tourists alike. The night we went there were some local fishermen/lobster men buying drinks for everyone at the bar - but you have to ring the bell first! You'll see the bell.... The bar tender was on her game, we tried their rotating mocktail, and I tried the Ruby Slipper just because of it's name. Service was fast, friendly, and busy. The inside is like the hull of a ship, think nautical theme, exposed beams, old warm wood that looks like it was salvaged from the sea. 7/4/25 Went in as the doors opened at noon on the Fourth- the only one to sit at 'The Shuckers' Bar' (which I recommend). The three shuckers were engaging, friendly, until the tourist crowd rapidly filled the place and the oyster orders swamped the shuckers. They are good, however and very very few shell bits were left. The restaurant feels new, fresh, inviting. I had six bombazines, cultivated in Brunswick, ME and six Besos Del Mar (Spanish for kisses of the sea). The bombazines were thick, filled a deep cup, were meaty yet soft, and crushed easily with the tongue against the roof of the mouth; creamy, slightly sweet, slightly salty, with a sweet finish like a German Spaetlese. Sublime ; required no help from the mignonette or lemon slice. I found the Besos Del Mar slightly harsh and off-putting, also briney and with a taste vastly improved with a half-teaspoon of mignonette or a few drops of lemon. Both species were fresh, full, filling the cup, as the photos illustrate. I will be back here, frequently! read more

I've been to Freeport plenty of times but have never stopped in here before! I'm from the area, but had a few friends visiting from out of town and they insisted that we find somewhere to get some chowder. The restaurant is very cozy (not too many tables for indoor seating), but luckily we didn't have to wait long as a party was leaving just as we arrived. The service was very quick and the waitress was attentive to our table. I ordered the Winter Kale Salad, which was really fresh and delicious! I wasn't too hungry so this was perfect. My brother ordered the grilled cheese, and my friends ordered the clam chowder. All of it arrived warm and was perfect for a chilly day. I will definitely be going again next time I'm in Freeport and will recommend to anyone visiting! read more

This was stop #1 for fresh oysters after visiting LL Bean (we went to Linda Bean's later). We were able to get right in at a small table for 2. It's not a very large place & the tables are close together so it's a bit cramped in there. They were also hosting a fundraiser in the entryway so that added to the crowding. Our waitress was knowledgeable & helped us choose what type of oysters we wanted. We went with a full dozen, but one half was from one part of ME & the other half from another part of ME. I cannot recollect clearly what the waitress told us, but they did have slightly different tastes. They also had a unique relish they make in house which was pretty good with the oysters! Another young man brought our oysters out to us & explained what each dip was. He was very enthusiastic about it & seemed to enjoy reviewing our order. We thought that was above & beyond. Walked from LL Bean to find dinner. During the off season it was hard to find a place open. My goal was to east as much and variety of lobster as I could in my 4 days in Maine., Found this place and went in. A few locals who were finishing up and then staff. It is a cute little place. A few seats and bar seating. I bet the summer is a great time here when the doors are open and there is seating on the grassy area out back/front. My server/bartender was great. We talked the whole time I was in there. She was heading on a trip to Mexico to meet some friends and surf. She recommended the Lobster BLT. I would have never thought of lobster on a BLT but it was so good. The lobster was tender and the bacon was so crispy. The right amount of lettuce and tomatoes rounded out the sandwich. There was just the right amount of mayo and I did not have to also for more. Both pieces of my sandwich were spread with mayo as a sandwich should be. Fresh kettle chips and house-made pickles were served with the sandwich. 10/10 for food and conversation. I know it has be a few months but I think her name was Sam or maybe Chris. This fine gentleman in the photograph is Bossman's son - Bossman is a biologist - a big hearted big smile big fella that enjoys talking with the patrons, his presence makes everything merry. Bossman's son (name to be added later, my apologies, it's contingent upon discovery of my damn notes - uugh, I'm so pissed at myself, I hand wrote 1.5 pages when I got home) was teaching a new recruit proper shucking technique. Scoop in a light semi circle, don't stick, jab, scoop and lift - I added that part - shucked a few myself for pay and pleasure. Long Island and Connecticut - where Blue Points reign supreme - never much cared at any high level for those, they're too chunky, so are Beaver Tails, just with prettier shells and gulfs can remain there with the Exxon Valdez - no anti environmental comment there - I just like big money sinking to the bottom depths, being swallowed up and decaying and making beautiful fish hotels, musta been the fishbowl wreckage I kept buying from Portland Discounts - the pirate, the gold - the doomed diver with the bronze forward window pumpkin globe on his head. Did I mention that I filed my receipt record and my notes therein? We stopped in on a chilly evening and ended up with a dozen oysters on the halfshell and a cheese board over probably a 3 hour period. All were incredibly fresh and super good. This spot is awesome! All of the food was great. Adding kelp (powdered, flaked, pickled) to a lot of the dishes was really unique. The local raw oysters were perfect, Old Bay popcorn awesome, charcuterie and pickled veg were high quality. You cannot go wrong with anything on the menu.
