Five star for product & pricing, ONE for customer service. Commenting on customer service only because... in the words of Glenn Close from Fatal Attraction, "I will not be ignored" lol. I'm angry. Returned a pair of shoes, asked if they carried 1/2 size larger, was told no. I left the store, realized I left my my high end prescription sunglasses for driving on the counter. One may not have realized they were prescription and picked them up for the brand, regardless, this all happened in a matter of maybe 15 to 30 minutes. I know they have a lot going on but seriously, we are talking $500. plus No empathy, no concern, no care, took my number and sent me on my way. When I called later, I asked for a manager to check the "security" footage, I had the exact timing from my receipt. Again, some huffing and puffing a snide side comment "we don't usually check video for lost sunglasses" but Anthony assured me I would be contacted later that day, after a review of the "security" video. Nothing, tumbleweeds through the air waves. Now I intend to file a police report which will hopefully help identify what may have occurred. This is a review for DSW generally. I ordered two pairs of shoes from DSW online. They sent me a pair of shoes I'd never ordered, never even looked at, and which were so ugly I suspect they were just trying to get rid of them. I called to complain and request a refund. Here is where the real trouble begins. I wound up with five pairs of shoes, only one of which I'd actually ordered, all of which they charged me for. Now I'm supposed to find time in my busy schedule to drag four boxes in to their physical location because these idiots (and I do not use that word lightly) are trying to unload their extra inventory onto customers who ordered something else entirely? Do not shop here. They are bad-faith actors who stock a lot more ugly shoes than decent ones, and their customer service is a nightmare and a joke. read more

I've been looking for a good pair of faux-suede boots for months and went shoe shopping at the Designer Shoe Warehouse (DSW) over Labor Day weekend. I knew what I wanted and was hoping to find it at the Skokie location. I wanted a stylish yet comfortable shoe I could wear for hours. A black boot with a low heel would fit the bill. I initially shopped the front of the store (where all the regular priced items were) and found nothing I liked within budget so I went towards the back wall clearance section. At the clearance section it took some time (and digging to find the perfect shoe) but let me tell you, shopping the clearance section is the way to go. If you have the patience and persistence to comb through all the clearance items you can find an amazing deal. I found the perfect pair of Aerosoles faux-suede boots marked down at the highly coveted yellow tag (80% off) discount. Knowing I found the perfect shoe at a steal, I felt like Cinderella! I immediately snagged it up and made a beeline to the counter. A shoe that normally goes for $220, I was able to get for $44.00 after tax. I would definitely come during sale season and hit up the clearance section. read more

This review is specifically for the woman who was so rude today when I asked s out the bathroom. Tip, yes, that's the bathroom down the hallway, where the lights are off, and the orange cone sits blocking you. I made the mistake of attempting to get the attention of a worker by saying, ma'am, and she kept walking, clearly ignoring me. I had to run to catch up with her and say, ma'am again, she clearly did not want to engage with the public, or had a very large chip on her shoulder with a very bad attitude. Once I caught up I asked if the bathroom was open , she rudely said it's in the back corner and kept walking. I said the lights are off, is it open and she said someone has to let you in and she continued to walk. It was unclear who that person might be so I said to her should I go to the front desk and she rolled her eyes and said it would be her ,and most people would just go back there and wait. I'm not sure what's going on here, but she wins first place for making customers feel unwelcome. And, based on some other recent reviews, it looks as if customer service has really gone down the drain. It might be time for management to do a training on attitude since asking about the bathroom shouldn't piss you off. read more

This place is more like a 2.5 star, because it floats between 2 and 3, but it usually lets me down and I leave regretting my decision to go there, so I'll put it closer to a 2. There is usually always an issue here and the willingness, desire, or care for the employees to solve it is always dismal. There is always a LOT of garbage from the excess packaging of the shoe boxes (a fault of the companies who make the shoes, but a responsibility of the store to keep it clean). There are a few nicer employees who work both the floor and register, but for the most part, it's better to avoid any and all interactions with them (god forbid you need to use a coupon, points reward, or birthday/annual perk). Lastly, the sign out front has been half lit for over 3 months; goes to show the state of repair of the entire place overall. At least what's on the outside matches what's within. read more

This location tends be very busy and the employees and managers always seem to do a really good job. Considering how busy they are-- The store is clean and well-kept. The employees are helpful when you need it. And the manager, Jen, was very helpful today as well. I am happy to have this store in the neighborhood. read more

This is my Go To place for shoes (besides Nordstrom and Nordstrom Rack next door). I shop here for my whole family, heading straight to the Clearance rack at the back first. I almost always find what we're looking for, and my Rewards add up quickly enough to allow for additional savings. I have noticed more on sale on the sales floor, lately too, which is awesome! Customer Service is great here, as well; the sales people are always available for assistance on the floor, happy to help you locate whatever you're looking for, and they'll either check another store or offer to check online. The other day I needed a different size and it was only available online. They placed the order for me and they don't charge for shipping. They are always busy and parking can be tricky, but that's due to their size and selection. The lot just never seems big enough! Plus they share with Panera. Ugh. But they're close to home and convenient, so I deal with it. So yes, I'm a fan!! read more

I was there with a mobility challenged, elderly relative and was struggling to open the door and help her in without getting her caught in the door. Retail workers watched us struggle and did not assist. Another customer did help. DSW has NO handicap accessible doors!!!!! Isn't that against the ADA law???? read more

The location did not appear fully staffed at the time, but I knew what I was looking for and did not require additional help. The store was well kept and bright with natural lighting. When I did finally seek help, attendants were available and helpful. This store is also in close proximity to other excellent store in the area, so you can shop a lot of stores at once, so you're not going out of your way just to stop at this DSW. They have a very large selection of just about every style of shoe that you want. There's a limited number of sizes of every style, so you may not find your size in the style you want. They tend to have higher quality shoes than someone like shoe carnival or pay less, but the ones they carry are marked down by maybe $30 for a $120 boot. Sometimes they are 20-40% off of that price, but again you might not find it in your size. There's extremely limited customer service so you'll have to hunt on your own unless you happen upon a really nice salesperson that's not busy restocking shoes. Staff is very helpful and friendly and the store is very clean with shoes and other offerings well displayed. DSW is my "go to" place whenever I need shoes! read more

Signs all over the store state that if you need a size just ask. So I approached two employees who were on the floor having a conversation.... I waited and the employee who was facing me (I think the manager, black woman with long straight hair in a pony tail, name starts with an L) gives me a look like "can't you see we're busy, move along"....pursed lips and all. I said "sorry, looks like I'm disturbing you" and she goes "uh huh", looks back at the other employee and continues to talk about the other employee's school schedule I think. Needless to say I walked away without getting help. I feel sorry for the employees who have to work with this woman. Have private conversations with your staff if you need in private areas...or how about just a "I'll be with you in a sec" read more

Love all the options. I came in with a specific shoe need and was able to leave with my mission accomplished! This was thanks, in part, to a really helpful sales person. (Wish I remembered her name!) Very disappointed that n the service I received here today. I bought a pair of summer shoes last September. I understand the store has a 90 day return policy. I went to wear the shoes for the first time at a family event last night. As I'm wearing the shoes the left shoe literally fell apart. The stitching came completely undone within 45 minutes of the event I was no longer wearing a shoe! I went to return the shoe today. Dame the manager came up with no smile no apology for the embarrassment of the shoes poor quality and told me the only thing she could do was a store credit. The shoe was $70 I just bought three other pairs of shoes in the last month there. I wanted my money back. The shoe was poor quality and completely fell apart. Very disappointed. I buy a lot of shoes there so the store credit is not the issue. But if a shoe falls apart in 45 minutes the store should return the shoe for money back. Selling poor quality merchandise is shameful, not apologizing for the shoe falling apart and the embarrassment is pretty bad as well. Just think you should revisit your policies and make sure you do what's right by your customers. I understand you don't make the shoes, but you should stand behind the quality of the product you do sell to your customers. It was very clear the shoe was brand new when I brought it in today. I'm really upset and disappointed. I've never had an issue like this before and felt it should have been handled differently. read more

Honestly? This particular location isn't my favorite. This store tends to feel super chaotic when I'm in there, maybe because it's always pretty busy. I live around the corner from their newer Northbrook location, and I prefer to shop there because it's new and still pretty quiet. What brought me to the Skokie location was the announcement of their kids shoe section. I've known it was coming for some time now, and I was anxiously awaiting. Here's the deal...it's a small section. There's a nice selection of baby/toddler and girl shoes. For older boys shoes, it's just okay. Sadly my 5th grade boys couldn't find anything they liked, so I'm making the suggestion that the shoe selection is particularly ideal for younger kiddos. Note: The Vans selection is limited to only a few styles. I was hoping they would have had more. One more thing about this location is the fact that the clearance shoes aren't discounted as much as I remember. They do run sales though, like the Converse sale currently taking place. I went to my students' prom last night and realized that if I was getting a pedi in honor of the occasion (yeah, I'm a total nerd-bomber) I should get some sandals to show it off. Sorta like that mastercard commercial, now that I think of it... Anways, I got 2 pairs of really great sandals -- espadrilles by nicole miller and pumps by guess. Under 100 bucks for both including tax. Not that I'm a brand whore or anything -- I am really not -- you should see what I wear to work, ha! But, I just wanted to prove the point of, good deals abound at DSW. Minus one star for the fact that it was packed to the friggin gills, there was no place to sit down (shoe boxes on all the benches), and my pants were too low rider for all that squattin and trying on shoes.... Ok. Seriously? We all know that I have a shoe problem. A serious one. And it's worse now that I am temping because I shouldn't buy shoes ever. I came in here for moral support with my roommate as he needed new work shoes. I can't resist a spin around the pump and sandals aisles, and then made my way to the clearance rack. Oh. My. God. I found the most incredible black and gold patent alligator platform pumps that I have ever seen. They had one pair left, coincidentally in my size (GAH!), and so I had to try them on. WOW. These shoes are hot. And actually somewhat comfortable.I had gotten one of those coupons for $10, and they were on super clearance...so my choice was clear. I needed to have these shoes. Done and done. The selection at this store is fantastic. It's one of the larger ones I have been to. There don't seem to be many associates on the floor to help with sizing, but clearly I can get myself into a big enough shoe mess on my own! I don't regret this decision to purin the slightest. I love shoes, and given the choice between food and shoes, this is what I choose. Call it irresponsible, but I am one happily outfitted lady. read more

This is definitely my go-to shoe store in the area because of its wide selection and great prices. I am extremely happy with my latest experience all thanks to Melissa, the floor sales associate. While looking for a pair of male dress shoes, I noticed the size I needed was not available. Right when I noticed and was deciding to leave, Melissa approached me ready to help. She was dedicated to me and was quick to try to find a solution for me. After telling Melissa I couldn't find the size I needed, she checked the store's stock and it was sold out. Nevertheless, she still radioed another associate in the back to check just in case for me which was awesome. Turns out, they did have one pair left! Thanks to Melissa and her persistence, I walked out with a brand new pair of shoes in the size I needed! And it all took less than five minutes! That's what I call good customer service. I came by here today to find some work shoes (since mine are falling apart and my co-workers always make fun of me) and they were having a clearance sale so I was really excited to find something. I mean the store is HUGE and you can find almost anything that you are looking for. The discounts are great and you can find great bargains. I've gotten a lot of shoes from this store and you can also get bags and other accessories. The back has a clearance section where you can get shoes for up to 70% off and it depends on the sticker color. read more

Huge shoe selection, if your shoe size is between 6 and 9. They have a ton of shoes on their clearance racks. The shoes are discounted, yes. But you will still pay over $40 for sketchers and steve maddens. Honestly, the prices are pretty much the same as Shoe Carnival or Famous Footwear. DSW is definitely bigger and you will have a much larger probability of finding what you are looking for. read more

The key to shopping at DSW is to sign up for their rewards program on a junk e-mail account. You get occasional GREAT coupons in the mail and by buying from DSW you wrack up points that lead to more discounts. Tha'ts just the half of it though. You get so many sale offers/discounts/announcements in the mail that it really becomes benificial if you buy a lot of shoes or you would like a discount when you NEED to buy shoes! It just seems to always work out for me at least. They don't have a lot of size 10's or + for women stocked but they'll order them for you. They have a lot of cute sneakers, flats, hells and boots. A clearance section in the back, and purses/other accessories too. It's the first shoe store I trust to go to outside of a department store. Before I think of a department store even. read more

My favorite DSW ever! I have been to the one in Oak Brook, Schaumburg, Deer Park, Northrbook, Chicago (couple of them). Skokie is the best. Everything is organized best, workers walk around everywhere asking if I need help, and the selection is awesome. My size 7 is super popular, and they seem to have extra 7s. Parking can be a hassle sometimes, but meh, not a problem if you go a little bit to the side. LOVE SHOES!! read more

i like dsw, and i really like this one. There's only like 2 places I really buy shoes from nowadays - this dsw across from old orchard or famous footwear on lincoln and mccormick. the dsw on clark is good too, but i don't like driving on clark, and i don't like parking on clark - takes too damn long. there's only 3 types of shoes i wear - kenneth cole for my dress shoes, kswiss for my casual, and boots for the winter. simple as that. running shoes are usually new balance. with that being said, dsw is much cooler than famous footwear because they have kenneth cole. and most of the time it's priced the same as the kenneth cole outlet in aurora. It's hard to not leave this location without one or two pairs of shoes. This location is always clean and full of new merchandise. I'd warn that if you, like me, wear size 10 or 11, then know the Clearance section at this location is a bit scarce. It's also pushed back in a corner near the bathroom which doesn't make for a particularly pleasant shopping experience. They get bonus points for accessibility (huge parking lot), friendly employees and great customer service. read more

I am a shoe addict. I can't help myself, I just love them so. When my doc told me to stop wearing three inch heels, I headed straight for DSW to renovate my shoe supplies by adding lots of flats to my collection. DSW is like heaven for me. I usually shop at this DSW because it's close to all of my other shopping locations; however, I prefer the new DSW that recently opened on Roosevelt and Canal in the South Loop. After all, their clearance section is a full room, rather than just a few racks in the back of the store. read more

I love this store and frequently buy shoes here, but I had an awful experience with their customer service today. Felt like I needed to say something. After visiting the store I realized not ten minutes later that I didn't have my wallet. I called to ask if somebody had turned it in, or if any employee could quickly sweep the place for me. After being on hold for two minutes, the manager came on the line to coldly tell me they did not have my wallet. She didn't offer any help or options, I had to ask if I could give them my information. She took my information in a very exasperated manner, and I didn't feel like the request was taken seriously at all which really upset me. (It's not like I left some precious stuffed animal and making a fuss about something that isn't a big deal, this is a WALLET.) I drove back to the store right after the phone call because it was evident it wasn't taken seriously. Immediately I spoke with somebody and all they could do was check the locker and coldly say that they still don't have it, but they heard my request and they'll call if anything comes up. The manager was at the front hanging out and she shouted over at me, "we heard your request. We will let you know if anyone turns it in." I proceeded to frantically search the empty DSW warehouse while the manager and the other employee chatted away at the front. I immediately found my wallet in one of the front aisles. The lack of regard for my belongings was offensive and rude, especially coming from a manager. Management should take note and change accordingly. What's not to love? Tons and tons of discounted designer shoes? Yes, please! I've had pretty good luck at this DSW location. They almost always have my size in stock, and the selection is unbeatable. The prices are definitely less expensive than department stores. Also, the employees on the floor and the cashiers are friendly, and you can tell they love shoes too. I guess one negative of this DSW is that their parking lot is a little small. DSW shares a lot with Panera Bread, and sometimes it gets really crowded and hard to maneuver around in. Also, I guess my one other gripe is that DSW's clearance section doesn't really feel like clearance. I don't seem like the prices are that much cheaper than the shoes for sale in the main display area. And the shoes in the clearance section are pretty picked over. I mean, it's called clearance for a reason, but they pretty much never have anything I'm interested in in my size. But those two things aren't enough to prevent me from giving this DSW five stars. Love the shoe selection but the low score is for the service. So they offer a $10 coupon if you sign up your email...ok great..so I sign up my email and didn't get the coupon. I started reading reviews and you don't get the coupon emailed til days later. Ok so I'm going to talk to the cashier...you would think they would accommodate. Nope. The cashier was actually kinda rude. I asked if I can purchase them now and come back when I get the email (totally inconvenient by the way) and her response was "No, that would be a price adjustment and we don't do that." Ok so let me get this straight, I'm physically in the store and I need to come back to buy the shoes?! That's kinda unreasonable and poor customer service.
