Just left Waxbergs. My experience couldn't have been more different than the last time I was here. I was greeted when I came in, someone was called over to help me, he explained how the Taos I was looking at were different than the Birkenstocks I was wearing, and suggested Finn's because they too have a cork bed. Came here with my significant other because he needed shoes that would help prevent fallen arches. Rather than Sketchers or some other cheap store, I suggested this might be a good place to find something that would actually be protective. Upon arrival they had someone come out to help with selection. I think we were only here about 20 minutes, so I appreciated the quick service. The service was good and neither of us felt like they were just trying to sell the most expensive items. I hadn't planned on buying any shoes, but I did see a few pair that were pretty cute and apparently they carry (sometimes) shoes in large sizes for women, since I have clown-sized feet, but the only ones they had to try weren't going to work for me. So happy I accidentally found this place! I suffer from bunions and have spent so much time trying to find good ortho shoes online and so hard to know without trying on the actual shoes. This place has so many brands and styles to try and all better quality than what you find in a "regular" shoe shop. Irwin helped me and was so knowledgable and had some great suggestions for my situation. My mother gave me a coupon and said this store has Mephisto shoes. Since that brand is the most comfortable I've ever had, I tried going there. The service was incredibly nice, they showed me whatever I wanted and explained differences between 7.5 M and 7.5 W vs. 8 M and 8W. I was truly impressed with the variety of colors and styles as well as the individualized service and follow through. Yesterday I received a call from them saying, "Remember the shoes you liked but didn't get because they were different colors from sun exposure? Having been a customer for many years, I go in, find Lou, and say bring me some shoes. Yesterday my husband and I walked out with seven pair between us. Waxberg's has the best selection of good shoes - supportive, comfortable, and still stylish. But the main reason I come back is for the superior customer service given by the knowledgeable sales staff. Lou is my go-to guy, but everyone there is good. They really listen to people's problems with their feet, and the first question they ask when you try on a pair of shoes is " Are they comfortable?" They don't just want to sell you a pair of shoes, they want to be sure they fit well. Also, there is no pressure to buy...we just prefer to come in less frequently and then stock up! If you want good shoes and an attentive sales staff, Waxberg's is where you want to be. read more

Very clean place with a lot of options. The discount section in the back is nice too with deals from time to time. However, for some reason or another (I have my hunch), my family and I have never been approached by a salesperson once in our 7-10 times we have walked in looking for shoes. In fact, I've barely been acknowledged. Not a single "hi, welcome to Waxberg's" or "good morning". Not even a smile at the kids. I don't know why they would do this; the only reason that comes to mind is possibly the fact that some of my family members dress in traditional Asian clothing and wear a headscarf. I just got an amazing pair of winter boots here. Service was excellent! They took my temperature when I entered and had hand sanitizer available in multiple spots. Then I got fitted for shoes. These are my first shoes after my second pregnancy with twins so I wasn't sure what would fit but they helped me out. I got one boot on one foot and another on the other side to test them out. The sales man suggested a couple pairs of shoes that fit great since I am on my feet a good part of the day and they usually hurt. I purchased sneakers and a few months later bought another pair. What I did not know was the widths were different. I called Waxbergs and wanted to replace a pair of sneakers- Irwin looked into my history and said," which width shoe are you looking to replace?" "What do you mean which width?- when I was there I told the salesman that I wanted the same shoe and now I have two different width shoes? I was furious! Irwin was extremely patient and told me to bring in both pairs, so we can see which one fits- then he would replace the bad one with a correct size - free of charge. My better half is not a Yelper but she is still steamed after horrible customer service at Waxbergs a year ago, so let me briefly relate it. (BTW, she's a physician, so Grace K., they're equal opportunity offenders!) She goes into the store on way to office, no acknowledgement by staff, starts to look around. 15 minutes go by, no one has come over, and into the store comes a reverend she knows. She starts talking to him and they both sit down. Eventually, a salesperson comes over to wait on the reverend and my wife is ignored. She goes to the sales counter, and is told "we thought you were with the reverend", and she has to explain that no, she came into the store 15 minutes before him, and could someone help her now. Counter people tell her no, they're too busy, and she'll have to keep waiting. No apology, even after she identifies herself as a physician who often refers people for foot care. Asks to see the manager and is told he's "too busy" to talk to her. So she leaves angry at how the store wasted almost an hour of her time without any care to make it right. And I don't blame her. We all want to root for independent businesses, yet so many fall into this pattern of arrogance and favoritism and then cry they can't compete with Amazon. read more

Today I took my parents to Waxberg to get them some shoes. I specifically went here because the last pair I bought them (which, by the way, cost me over $200 each) were the most comfortable shoes they have owned. NEVER will I frequent this store again. From the moment we walked in, the salesmen were RUDE and ARROGANT. They acted like we were invisible. We were ignored the whole time we were in the store. There were at least five salesman sitting around and not one of them acknowledged our presence until I asked about a certain shoe at which point was rudely told, "it's over here and you have ten minutes to look around"! Really!!? I come in here, to possibly drop about $500 of my hard earned money, and this is the treatment I get? Never again. As I read other Yelp reviews, seems like this is typical Waxberg "service". I don't recommend anyone frequent this establishment! read more

What a fabulous store! The first time I went there Sol spent a great deal of time with me to find shoes which would be comfortable despite my bunion and hammertoe. My entire adult life I have worn a size 8 shoe, so I was dumbfounded when Sol brought out a pair of 7-extra wide shoes for me to try on. I assumed I would be walking out in disgust within several minutes. I was wrong; Sol was right! The shoes he chose were perfect for me. During my second trip to Waxberg's I worked with Chuck Durante, one of the pedorthists at Waxberg's. He spent at least an hour with me identifying the best orthotic for me. He put no pressure on me to make a purchase of any sort. These older gentlemen--the sales staff at Waxberg's--provide the type of customer service that no longer seems to exist. When I go there, I feel that I'm taking a journey back to another era--where salespeople knew their product inside and out and provided actual service to customers, rather than just acting as cashiers. read more

This is the mini "Alamo Shoes" of the northwest suburbs...they carry Danskos, Merrils, FitFlops, MTB's, Earth Shoes, etc. Very good, knowledgeable, NON-overbearing sales people. I was looking for a good pair of walking shoes for an upcoming trip... my salesman "Irwin" recommended "Wolky's" sandals. Tried them on...Sold! Can I tell you, we walked EVERYWHERE on vacation and my "Wolky's" didn't let me down, super comfortable. I also bought a pair of "FitFlops" and the hubby bought a pair of very stylish "Timberland-Smart" sandals. They have a "frequent buyers club" so you get so much off of your next pair of shoes depending on what you spend. There is a little "Sale" backroom with some good deals. Waxberg's is located in a strip mall next to a Panera Bread on the south side of the street. I had to giggle when "Irwin" gave me his card and under his name was the title of "Shoe Psychologist." read more

Took my mom to Waxberg to get new shoes, we knew what pair she wanted, because she HAD been a customer for the last 10 years. Well today that all changed. Salesmen walking around acting like we were invisible. We stood there over 15 minutes and not one single salesman asked us if we needed help. So we left...if they hadn't asked us by that time they weren't ever going to ask. Calling Waxberg's to have them remove my mom's name from their mailing list. If they aren't going to waste their time on a customer who was going to drop $200 on a pair of shoes, I'm not going to waste my time going there ever again. They did me a favor found the exact shoes at onlineshoes.com and with their promo I saved over $50. So thank's Waxberg...for having the worst customer service we've ever encountered. The salesman shouldn't be so judgemental when they don't know how much people are dropping for a single pair of shoes from their store. Just finished eating at the Panera next door. Had a drink in my hand. I'm a nurse, and I wanted to check out a new pair of Dansko's. So I walked in. Immediately, an old gentleman/"salesman" pounces on me, 'If you're not gonna stay a little while, would you mind throwing out your drink before taking a look around?" Uhm. I'm not a 5 year old. Nor do I run with pairs of scissors. I asked if they carried the Dansko XP's, (which is a newer version which is lighter). And he didn't know what they were. He said no. Didn't know what they were. I have been to Waxbergs multiple times. Each time I have signed in, been able to look around and get an idea of what is available, and then had excellent, personal service. I have chronic plantar fasciatis, bunions, sciatica, and fibromyalgia and their recommendations have been right on target and have helped to abate my pain. My most recent visit in mid-January was for a pair of athletic shoes. After discussing my needs, my history and looking at the wear pattern in my current shoes, I was given a suggestion for a pair of shoes that have proven to be great for me. The sales people are knowledgeable and personable. Their selection is great as well. I am a convert from cheap and inexpensive shoes to quality shoes - you get what you pay for. They were so accommodating here, it was fantastic. My bunion-burdened Mom twisted my arm to go here and I guess Mother knows best - at least sometimes! My guy was honest, attentive, and offered constructive suggestions with no pressure. There is very little on sale, but the pricing is the same as at any department store's prices and the selection is great. After having spent the whole day at Old Orchard trying on shoes (with no results), I was thrilled to have been in and out in less than 30 minutes with the cute pair of summer sandals I needed. Keep in mind that this place is about 50% orthodics-laden support shoes and they certainly cater to a more, ahem, mature crowd (there is a lot of velcro - not going to lie) BUT they are certainly more than just that. They have a good selection (a handful of mostly cute styles from several comfort brands and they can order anything for you), knowledgeable, friendly, low/no pressure, etc. Its no bargain, but if you need a genuinely helpful place to get you a great pair of durable, comfortable shoes for work/walking/whatever, this is certainly the place to go. read more

I've been to Waxbergs a couple of times. The first time was for myself as I was dealing with some horrible Plantar fasciitis. Irwin checked out my feet, measured, watched me walk and brought me out 3 different shoes to try on. One of the pairs I fell in love with. Between those Dansko's he sold me and my Brooks running shoes, My heel pain is about gone. A couple of weeks ago I returned to Waxbergs because my husband started a running plan and his shoes were horrible. He had also started some heel pain and he finally listened to his wife (typical male) and went with me to be fitted for some real running shoes. Once again, his foot was examined, they looked at the wear pattern and they then brought out several shoes for hubby to try on. We will go back! read more

After suffering with dorsal bone spurs in my feet for several years and thinking I just had to suck it up with ill-fitting shoes and lots of costly trips to the shoe store, I've found relief at last! Dawn, a pedorthist who consults at Northwestern Orthopedic Institute, let me in on a little secret: Waxberg's Walk Shoppe. After accepting the seeming fact that I'll probably never wear cute shoes again, I made my way to the store. Randi helped me. By that I mean she stuck with me for over an hour, touring the store, negotiating my picks and retraining my eye away from too-narrow shoes that constrict my feet. For each shoe we picked out, she'd determine if I should wear it with my carbon foot plates and my orthotics, the plates and the manufacturer's insoles, or just the insoles. When in doubt, she'd consult with Dawn (who also works at Waxberg's), so my shoes were doubly approved to be right for me. I walked out with four pairs of shoes: Brooks running shoes, Aravon mary janes, (surprisingly cute) Dansko sandals and, to my happy surprise, Fitflops. No, nothing was on sale, and the shoes may not be the world's most stylish. But knowing I can sustain comfort in and even benefit my feet is precious to me. One tip: I almost tucked away my receipt without noticing that for every $50 spent, you get $2 back on future purchases if you bring in the original receipt. Best money I've ever spent on shoes/sandels! It took a while for someone to approach me for help as they were all working with just one customer or went to the back of the store passing me by, and the credit card computer wasn't working so not five stars but very good still. Once someone finally did approach me they were friendly and helpful and the sandles the guy recommended are great. Keens brand. Super comfortable and I work at a daycare so when I'm outside running with the kids and going in the sprinklers my feet feel great and stay dry as they are water proof.
