Du Vin is my go-to for wine always and forever! Love Robert and Rene - they are great about making recommendations based on any guidelines, preferences and/or budget you give them. They are kind and lovely and always a delight to encounter while shopping. Stopped by today to pick up some cremant. I ordered on the phone, then picked up from a table outside the store - very COVID safe even for the most conservative among us. While I miss taking my time to inspect bottles inside the shop, I'm happy they have such a great and safe option for the pandemic. Decided to check this place out due to the positive Yelp ratings. It was worth a quick browse but not much more. The guy running the place is super nice and friendly and the shop has a really cool wine cellar type vibe. The racks are overflowing with lots of bottles of wine (no, really: watch yourself or you'll find that you are bumping into bottles)! I'm very clumsy so this store just stressed me out way too much. I was terrified that my bag / arm / shoulders would send a priceless vintage bottle hurtling towards the ground. I couldn't deal so I mostly hung out by the front door and chatted up the employee about the awesome espresso machine behind the front counter. The store is very heavy on European wines. I didn't see many California wines at all, but if you are looking for something French then this is your place! There were also many large format bottles that would be nice for a collector. As would be expected in a swanky neighborhood, the prices are inflated. I liked the animal rights signs and stickers throughout the store and I really liked the overall atmosphere of the store. Minus stars for the cramped, claustrophobic shelving and the fact that there's no parking lot (good luck finding metered street parking here)! I stop by whenever I'm looking for a special gift for my wife or for a party. Robert - I never get his name, but the other reviews call him Robert - is SO easygoing and knowledgable. There is no snobbery at Du Vin: you can ask for the cheapest wine in the house and he'll smile and find it for you. Or tell him you're looking to spend $15 or $50 or $200 on however many bottles, and he'll work with you. Just tell him what you like and what you don't. He's passionate about wine and happy to educate you. Pro tip: Du Vin also carries a lot of interesting and hard-to-find spirits, from small batch bourbons to obscure scotches. They even have fresh french bread and chocolate! And the place is tucked away and cute - a true neighborhood gem. read more

Nestled behind a little cave of ivy on San Vicente is this beautiful little boutique filled with a most exciting array of varietals for this little wine snob to coo and ooooh over. They have it all. They know it all. And they use delicious words like robust and earthy!! **swoon** As soon as you walk in they are ready to help and it almost feels like someone plopped you into a choose your own adventure book. Suddenly you and the guys here are like wine detectives trying to solve the case of the missing vin on your palate. Is it fruity, is it sweet, is it spicy, is it neat? Customer service really stands out here. Du Vin is south of "the blue whale" and he has the best prices. I only buy pink champagne though. I wish I took a photograph of the label of the first bottle I bought here since no one I asked wrote it down. I had it with Italian wedding cake. The prices are standard but the employees are really good at helping you pick out something you'll like. The shop is a converted house. The owner listens to you when you say how much you want to spend. He helped me choose a premier cru from the Champagne region of France dry enough to take the sweet dessert. I have tried a number of Wine stores and I tend to always get good help, but never do I find someone that can help me understand excactly what my own taste is....similar to George N.'s experience, I always feel silly trying to explain exactly what I want in a wine, unless Im in the third day of a trip to Napa, drunk off my ars using terms like "As you ascend the mountain of this wine you can taste the earth, the dirt almost sticking to your teeth, soon you hit the icy face of this climb and notice wild mountian goat droppings with a hint of wilderberry, once you get to the peak you feel a gust of juniper lavender pomegranite cloud formations and as you descend the summit of grapitude you notice just a pimple of cheese filled with formica and honey bunches of oak clusters on the outblow...what you novices might call, the finish" The next day I wake up wondering what made me sound like such an idiot...oh yeah, the wine That being said, Robert and Rene always help me understand exactly what my taste is and when Im at a loss for what I want, they can steer me in a hole new direction. I walked in, they asked me what I was looking for. I kind of expected this from what I'd read here but still don't love talking to people in shops. I said I wanted two bottles of Sauvignon Blanc for the Hollywood Bowl and they asked me if I mind drinking screw-caps. Nope. Well they just handed me two bottles. Try this $12 bottle (with the screw-cap), try this $18 (traditional cork). Let us know what you like and we'll direct you. Sweet. Done and done. The wine was terrific. Both bottles. In fact, may have favored the cheaper. They take down your phone number and make you a "member." Basically they keep track of what you order so that when you go back you can say, "Hey, I had a Bordeux I really liked but can't remember what it was." And they look it up for you. And then recommend others that you would also like. They are completely unassuming. Not snobs. Guys that would drink a $10 bottle of something they really liked with you. To me, this is what drinking wine is about. Be warned, it's a little tricky to find. It's pretty much a pool house behind some other building minus the pool. But seek it out. It's so cool. You just have to promise that after you explore the entire kingdom of wine with Du Vin's help and are full of knowledge, you stay as cool as these dudes. EXCELLENT: service, selection, location. I walked in to buy some mid-priced, good white wines for a party a friend was throwing. She just said "whites, like a sauvignon blanc and something else". Liking white wines myself I knew I could find something, but the guy at Du Vin immediately asked what i was looking for, and immediately took me to 2 different bottles. One was $14.99 and the other $18.99. Much appreciated! I was actually thinking of spending $30ish+ on each bottle, but he said there was no need. I like that. He wasn't trying to rob me! He also asked what the meal would be and selected the wines accordingly. My friend said that everyone loved the selections. I will go back here for sure, when I'm in the area. In a boutique space--a converted Los Angeles home--nestled in the ritzy and frequently garish neighborhood of West Hollywood, you will find a specialist in European wines. Inside Du Vin lights are cast dimly, and the selection is abundant (considering the space). When meandering through the cozy nooks of the old home you will find that there are rare troves of treasures--primarily of the Gallic variety--and holdings of some other wines that one can find anywhere. They are without a lot of the accoutrements of the modern wine emporia--like a tasting room or a restaurant upstairs (like another famous locale you may know)--but the owners do what they do...well. French Bordeaux and Burgundy, the prized liquids that are heavily sought after, can be found here in excess, in all price ranges. The prices are tailored to the neighborhood--relatively high--so Du Vin might not be the first place on your radar after browsing through wine-searcher, but they should be considered for their charming layout and all-around aesthetic. The service was outstanding; two very friendly staff were interested in helping me locate the wines I came for and as a special request they helped me collect some wood wine crates, going out of their way. I was treated like royalty despite my disheveled appearance. If you have yet to check out this staple on the Westside, existing modestly for over two decades, then they are definitely worth a trip, or if you are just feeling like a spendthrift on a binge, I would highly recommend a visit. I've been going to Du Vin for about two decades. Rene, the owner, and Robert, have been informative and patient with my low knowledge. I treasure this store for it's European fare, with a sprinkling of US liquors, which I think clutter up the place and I'd prefer more European offerings; but I suppose you have to meet the tastes of your west side clients. They keep track of our hits and misses as I report back about things they recommended. I do so admire a wine shop that stocks pricey $5000 magnums, but still takes the time to help you hunt down an $8 bottle of white French table wine you had once at a dinner party. I wasn't sure what to expect when we came here--I take that back, I was completely prepared to be defensive about my somewhat silly quest and to not ask any questions at all if there even a hint of a sneer as we tried to track down this wine we'd quite enjoyed. But contrary to many snooty wine places, the owners were briskly informative and engaging. They helped us locate a young bordeaux similar to a pricier kind we enjoy, and managed to help us hunt down the very last bottle of an elusive year of vintage emblazoned with a fleur de lys design that I remembered--amazing! The shop is stocked with a wide range of wines and mixers and price ranges, many with descriptive handwritten notes that make you want to try them all. Du Vin also keeps a file on all of their customers, so you'll always know what that lovely little vintage was that you found that last time you were in. read more

Love this place. Hidden gem tucked away in the back of an ivy covered house on San Vicente just 50 ft south of Melrose. They really do carry the best selection of European wines as well as special liquors and spirits that won't find anywhere else. Also, they offer fresh baguettes (made daily)! All the people that work there are so pleasant and always put a smile on your face. I wish I knew about this place sooner. Now that I found this place, I won't purchase rosés anywhere else. For me, buying wine is almost always a precursor to leaving a store feeling like a complete imbecile. Do I like wines that are peppery, tannic, loaded with fruit, endowed with deep bottoms, aggressive in the melon attack? Yo, is this a wine or a Sir Mix-a-Lot video we're talking about? I just know I want to drink something better than the fermented grape smoothie that is Charles Shaw. Luckily, the kind folks at Du Vin have always been able to steer me right. Nestled off a small brick patio in the shadow of the Pacific Design Center, Du Vin is a store focused primarily on European wines, champagnes and spirits. While the store is loaded with bottles that could easily assassinate my credit card balance, they also have a nice selection of wines under $15. And they tend to be very very tasty. I would much rather spend ten bucks on a Du Vin recommendation than six bucks on a Trader Joe's mystery bottle of "TJs Etruscan Bulls Blood Sangiovese." A friendly and non-condescending staff are ambassadors of accessible viticulture and have always humored my ridiculous questions. Give em a try if you're in the neighborhood. read more

I was under the impression that their selection would be overpriced (as most stores in this area are). Not the case at all! The owner, Rene, was extremely welcoming. He was getting ready to close the store for the night but did not rush us at all and asked we take our time to check the place out. While I didn't go in with the intention to buy anything, I ended up buying a bottle because I thought the place was so great. I thought the selection of wines and whiskey was outstanding and will be back to make ANY alcohol purchases. Really great for anyone who loves wine and wants to discover new favorites. The staff are really attentive, as every other review attests, and they keep a record of what you buy so if you like the findings you can buy them again. Bought half a case of their house Rose which seems to be made exclusively for them and it was really good. Would definitely buy a case next time. I give this 5 stars, mostly for its convenience to me but also for the large selection of European wines and the top notch service. I've only been here twice, which is sad because I live directly across the street. But I will keep coming more and more. The hours are what get me, I'm iff work right before they close usually. They have some really great wines, the prices are sometimes steep, but the selection is worth it. I also love that they specialize in Bordeaux which is my favorite. This place is worthy of my booze money. The staff is of great help to me when I was looking for whites that are 20 bucks and not from California. While my preference heavily tilts towards the Mediterranean appellations, I was impressed by the LOW PRICE I found for a white Bordeaux. The same Bordeaux sold in Trader Joe's. That's a buck cheaper here. Once I noticed that, I felt free to roam the cozy aisles. The wine racks tend to be sorted by country and they are predominantly French and American it seems like. The Spanish and Italian wines share the same cave out-back-there. Pro-ish tip: Wines on the rack are sorted by price, it gets higher as you circle around each rack. read more
