Housemade Vietnamese desserts galore! Most of their items are made-in-house, with a few exceptions. Some of the items on the elongated middle table are not made in-house. They have a ton of vegetarian-friendly desserts. Additionally, they offer both soy milk and pennyworth by the half gallon. They also sell fresh banh cuon (steamed rice flour rolls). You can buy them by the pound, and they offer two types: one with minced meat and the other plain without meat. Oh and the sell banh mis as well. The lady behind the banh cuon counter is friendly and helpful, and so are the cashiers. However, don't expect the ladies behind the smoothie/fresh dessert counter to be as pleasant. I've been here a few times, and each time, they've been just as grumpy so I now skip that section. Note: The fresh stuff that they make daily like xoi (sticky rice) gets sold out quickly so it's best to arrive early, ideally before 3 p.m. to ensure there's some left. Some of the workers aren't cross trained and got confused when we ordered a mango smoothie, telling us they don't have mango boba until her coworker corrected her. I had no idea what to expect as I walked in the the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. Wow, the parking lot at Universal Plaza was so packed. I could only find parking by the dumpster in the back of strip mall. The restaurant was also full. I could barely walk in because the line blocked the door. Looking at the menu... OMG everything is in Vietnamese. So, I quickly pulled out my phone to start google translating. I managed to get a few items that made sense. I figured I need time to understand what is what, let me take some time to study the ingredients first. I went back next day around the same time. Well, what a contrast. There were only a few customers. I was well prepared with my translated knowledge. This restaurant looked more welcoming. The employees seem to be friendlier and they spoke some English that I could understand. I ordered a small cup of Chè with yam and casaba for $2.75 and a cup of Silken Tofu with Grass Jelly (Tàu Hủ Sương Sáo) for $5.00. I am glad I learned this dessert myself and tried first hand. I'm not here to bash the food as it was ok, but what deserves the 1-star review is the blatant disregard the owner/employee had towards me and my baby. I came in and placed an order and while chatting with an elderly lady, a "auntie", she leaned down and kissed my 9 month old baby who was facing forward in a baby carrier. I asked her not to do that and she replied with that she was giving the baby "good luck". When my food was ready I went to grab it and to my surprise she leaned in a kissed my baby again!!!!! Same excuse when I asked her not to do that "I'm giving the baby good luck". Lo and behold the next day my baby ended up having a fever that ended up with 2 Dr visits and 4 days of pumping them full of ibuprofen and Tylenol to finally break their fever. Maybe it was coincidence but this interaction in every sense was inappropriate and really off putting that their employee would think it was ok to blatantly ignore my wishes as a parent and paying customer. With the very recent outbreak of measles in TX, RSV and Flu going around, it's not just something I'm overreacting about as the safety of my child is the utmost priority and I would've never thought it would be up for debate when I came into this establishment. I hadn't been here in a long time (probably 5+ yrs). My last experience here wasn't that good, but since it's been so long, I decided to check it out again. I got some Vietnamese desserts (chè) and a Vietnamese pork bun. The desserts tasted nice. There are a wide variety available, and they leave the coconut cream on the side and give it to you at check out for the chè (for the ones that need it). The pork bun, however, was not that good. It had a very gamey pork smell, and the taste was just okay. There wasn't much filling either compared to the bun. And finally on the corner, you get an area for registers and checking out. I ordered the soft pudding drinks #1 and #2. Number 1 has tofu pudding, grass jelly, red bean paste, and tapioca pearls. It was delicious but a little too sweet. You will need to order first at the banh mi counter then go over to the cashier and make ur payment. Show ur receipt of the payment upon picking up ur banh mi. I recommend trying the mini banh bao. This place is located close to my house and I enjoy coming here because they have sooooo many varieties to pick from.
