    I dropped in to pick up a BBQ pork vermicelli plate , two banh mi and a rice flour with meat plate for dinner. Our party of three were not impressed with the foods. The amount of protein in each order was lacking. The BBQ pork was dry and short on flavor. We didn't taste or locate the butter in both banh mi. This shack did not measure up to the competitors in Vietnamese Town in terms of flavor and quantity. The employees were nice and quick.

    Good place to check out for a VARIETY of Vietnamese snacks !! Quite a variety of fresh made different sticky rice flavor (sweet AND savory), preserved candies, coconut pandan jellies, banh baos, banh cuon, fresh soy milks, fresh made banh mi, etc Minimum credit card of $10 Since none of us spoke or understood Vietnamese (everythings labeled in Viet), we had to recognize or guess what some things were like the green soy milk, wasn't sure what the difference was. Variety of sticky rice flavors, unsure what the flavors were, etc Overall, nice place to check out either way. Ended up coming here twice during our trip. Very clean and organized. Just wished there was english too

    I've been here several times now, and every time it just hits the spot. Definitely get the Banana Chè and Bánh Mì -- they're delicious and pretty loaded. The service is fairly quick, as they have several aunties working behind the counter. The vibe is slightly more chaotic, since it's meant to be a quick stop to grab something to eat.

    So there's not much of an English menu available. You just need to know what you want or like or pick up something totally random and give it a try. On the bright side you know it's legit when they don't care to have an English menu and cater to their own kind. He walked in and they spoke to him in Vietnamese. He went along with it by nodding. I guess that's how I feel when I walk into a korean restaurant and they speak Korean to me or maybe they just do that to everyone like on Japanese restaurants when they welcome you. Anyways, with the limited translation available, he picked up two bahn mi, durian jelly/pandam/coconut milk dessert known as Che and 2 containers of soy milk. We assumed the soy milk was sweetened for the red and not for the blue. There's a ton of other pre-made prepackaged food that looked yummy but again who knows what it is. My friend said it was great! He's a frequent flyer. Now for the bahn mi - love that it was toasted. Filling to bread ratio was proportional. Veggie part was slim but maybe that's the trend here and people are not a fan of the veggies. Achieved the bahn mi craving but nothing outstanding that I can recall. It's simple, affordable and fresh. Cash only.

    I came to Đức Phương Thạch Chè was because a member of Chow Down in Chinatown Facebook Group referred me to find Niangao 年糕 Bánh Tổ. Yes, I found it just fine, plus more. I had no idea what to expect as I walked in the the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. Wow, the parking lot at Universal Plaza was so packed. I could only find parking by the dumpster in the back of strip mall. The restaurant was also full. I could barely walk in because the line blocked the door. Looking at the menu... OMG everything is in Vietnamese. So, I quickly pulled out my phone to start google translating. I managed to get a few items that made sense. I figured I need time to understand what is what, let me take some time to study the ingredients first. I went back next day around the same time. Well, what a contrast. There were only a few customers. I was well prepared with my translated knowledge. This restaurant looked more welcoming. The employees seem to be friendlier and they spoke some English that I could understand. I ordered a small cup of Chè with yam and casaba for $2.75 and a cup of Silken Tofu with Grass Jelly (Tàu Hủ Sương Sáo) for $5.00. I am glad I learned this dessert myself and tried first hand. Mmm... not my type of dessert. I can't handle something that sweet. I had an aftertaste with heavy syrup and coconut cream. But I will be back to try the sweet rice dish... hello Google Translate app.

    Usually the food is good, but they need to check the kitchen hygiene. Be careful when you get their prepackaged food and check for dead bugs in your food. It was unpleasant to pick up a piece of food to see that roach underneath it.

    Đức Phương Thạch Chè is a famous Vietnamese dessert restaurant in Houston, Texas. I often come here to buy their Vietnamese sweet desserts and some foods to go such as Vietnamese ham, spring rolls, shrimp salad, Vietnamese sandwiches, fruit smoothies, iced tea with boba, etc. They are always friendly and nice to the customers. Their service is so professional beyond my expectations. They have all kinds of Vietnamese varieties of bean desserts. If you would like to have some Vietnamese Chè, then I would highly recommend that you come here.

    So much selection!! Came on a friday afternoon just to check it out and they were actually sold out of many things (a good sign). We had a flight that day so just got a few things to eat then and take with us back home. The sua chua was amazing, the perfect amount of sour. We also got the fried rice cake with pork floss on it, so addictingly tasty. Will def be coming here for every Houston trip to stock up on goodies

    We were greedy and bought too many! They also had Che com - a specialty made with green rice flakes.

    Go here when you arrive to Houston, somewhere in the middle of your trip and last day you're there! Sooo many choices. Kinda overwhelming. And my pants stopped fitting like a day or so prior but oh well lol. I try what I can't get in my area or have never heard of before. I left absolutely craving and now will likely learn to make a couple of things here. Che hue - dessert with beans, jelly, coconut and more but different than southern style Che or desserts because of the balance. There was salty with all the sweet and it was just perfect! And my group of 6 Vietnamese adults had NEVER heard of sua bap or corn milk and guys - if you like creamy, decadent with some sweetness, oh my lord. We bought some to chug at the airport right before we had to go to security just so we could get one more taste of it before we left!

    Wow this place was busy on a random Friday at 11 am. They have an abundance of offerings! So many pre packaged foods (Banh bot loc, Banh bao, etc). They also have a ton of ché. I got the #2 Banh mi Dac biet which was only $5!! Where can you find Banh mi nowadays for that price??

I actually stopped by around 9am with the intention of getting a sandwich but ended up going with the bun bo hue with tofu which was super flavorful and filling. If you want a little more kick, they have all of the fixings to spice up it up - hoisin sauce, chili oil, sriracha, soy sauce and pepper - yes, please! On the other side of the cafe, there are tables to sit and eat, and there are menus stacked up on the counter to view. When I walked in, there were two guys sitting at a table, so there was no service or staff to wait on them at all (probably not needed). The cashier at the counter was quick in totaling up the cost and packaging of my containers into a bag, so it was an easy 'get and go' deal for me. I tried the fried rice, which was mixed with vegetables and tofu, and it was a little bland - had to add black pepper and spicy sauce to eat it. The stir fried beans, carrots, and tofu was lightly seasoned as well, so if you like well seasoned dishes, this would not be the ideal location. I have yet to try the variety of other dishes and desserts they offer, but they do offer clean and healthy vegan options.

Nguyen Ngo was our first banh mi stop and also our last. I'm really very particular about my banh mi and have a firm POV on what a great dac biet (combo/special) should include (and accept that this is my own preference and that others may disagree!). My checklist below is typically where I find the most variance from shop-to-shop, as almost all places include the requisite jalapeños and cilantro: - Bread: soft with a thin, crispy crust and the crust should not be so hard that it scratches the top of your mouth - Condiments: pate should be fairly generous and flavorful and there shouldn't be so much mayo that it's dripping out of the bread - Pickled veggies: should be close to 50/50 between carrots and daikon - Cold cuts: has to have cha lua (steamed pork sausage) and gio thu (Vietnamese head cheese, preferably one that doesn't have much of the ear as it's too crunchy). I'm fine if it also includes thit nguoi, but don't require it. I don't like thit nuong is included though, as I find it makes the sandwich too heavy So how does Nguyen Ngo stack up against my list? - Bread: 10/10, probably the best bread I've had for banh mi. No idea if they bake it themselves or if they purchase it, but they're definitely doing it right - Condiments: 10/10, perfect balance, but the standout was definitely the pate. It was creamy with a strong flavor, but not overly liver-tasting. I thought about it all week and even considered flying a tub of it back home with me (I did not, but might do it next time) - Pickled veggies: 5/10, mostly carrots with a tiny bit of daikon. Also leaned a touch more sweet than I prefer and maybe not pickled for quite long enough? It was nice and crunchy, but the main drawback was not having enough daikon in the mix - Cold cuts: 8/10, they don't offer gio thu or the kind of cha lua that I like in my banh mi, but the thit, jambon, and saucisson were a good enough combo that it didn't throw me off too much We ordered their dac biet on the first day, which includes this shredded chicken that I really didn't care for. The consistency was almost like pork floss, but less tasty. On the last day, we chose the 4 ingredient banh mi and got it with pate, thit, jambon, and saucisson and that was much more to our liking. We bought 9 to take back home to share with our families (plus a couple extra for us), and they did an excellent job of packing the veggies separately!

I tried there grilled BBQ pork baguette and the meat was done really well! They will have a butter spread along the base of the baguette with a little bit of mayonnaise to help give the filling a premiere texture. I just wish that they would do the same to the ceiling and not just the base of the baguette. Fair warning, if you drop by later on in the day, close to their closing hours, the baguette may not be as moist, still somewhat crunchy though. I highly recommend going earlier on the day to catch the baguette when it's made fresh. Service is standard for this area of town. They'll prepare the baguette in less than 5 minutes and will call your name when ready. Another fair warning, this place was cash only. Come prepared. The place is very spacious with a couple of tables and seats. Most folks choose the to-go option. You'll have no problems with finding seating if you'd like to stay.
