This is a jewel of a motel. Stuck in Billings, Dude Rancher Lodge is clean, comfortable, and affordable.

In the restaurant the prices in the menu are lower than what you might be charged! Our waitress said she couldn't change what was in the computer! The food was great and probably worth the higher price but they need to update the menu prices. read more

This place-- I'd give zero stars. I wouldn't even have a place like this running. We were so tired, after driving, we wanted to just sleep. The check in was close to 400 for 3 days after paying with cash- zero amenities, no washer nor dryer, nothing! There is a diner connected to the lodge but zero activity nor complimentary breakfast, it's ok, I wouldn't trust eating there. First off, we are given a key that only locks the push in knob, the master lock on top only closes from the inside which I noticed right away. Secondly- when we walked in, the carpets in the hallway were old, stained- filthy, same with the rooms. Carpet cleaner would help this place out or hardwood floors. Absolutely filthy- indoor sandals needed. The place smelled and had odors. The walls were dirty, AC unit dirty, dust and stains everywhere. Pillows too hard or so light it was like you were sleeping on paper. Mattress was uncomfortable, we both had neck and back issues end of our stay. Bathroom was scary- sandals again. The knob to turn on shower water had internal mold growing inside. The rooms are so dark that when you open the old curtains you only get a view of the parking lot, invest in blinds and privacy blinds to allow natural light. Upon returning from our day, (second day now), I noticed and felt something was off with the room, so I decided to zip both rolling bags a certain way, closed meeting in the middle, after a few hours of leaving and returning the 3rd day- I was right. Zippers were opened and tampered with. That's why this key thing is suspicious. Someone goes into the rooms when you're gone to look through your stuff. I highly recommend to not stay here, report them, bring a camera, or don't leave anything like money, cameras, jewelry, etc behind. Super shady place. My bf was heated, he wanted to go up to them and confront them and leave, but we were leaving that next morning and luckily we were smart enough to only leave clothes and toiletries behind. Employees obviously don't get paid enough, or have drug habits,it looks like a lot of reformed ex cons and druggies that were hired to work here. So in the back room up front, someone watching cameras knows you're gone- is coming into your rooms snooping around in hopes to find something of value. This place needs a full revamp and new team. Old place that shows its age. The cleaners do a great job but the carpets could use a good shampooing. Bed was large and comfortable. About a medium firmness and all the pillows in the world to choose from. Great bathroom towels. I'm picky about towels and expect a relatively inexpensive motel to have bad towels. I was pleasantly surprised by these. Good television with a lot of channels. Was amused the coffee maker had cups and sugars but no actual coffee pods or tea bags. Very friendly staff. read more

If you enjoy a very supernaturally charged experience, this is your place. I was not aware of the history of this hotel when I booked my stay. I checked in, walked to my room, and had a full on panic attack.I left...went for a drive and started to research. Well no wonder my heart raced and my hyper sensitivity went awry....it is most definitely a haunted hotel. The whole place has "that" feeling. I stayed in room 218, not famous for interactions but I'm pretty sure a male spirit lives in the corner of the room. He is confused...not friendly but not benign either. This is the one! No frills here but goodness, the price is right, the receptionist rocks (gal from Idaho), it's unique, great location, super easy park to room... Hey ladies, fellas, this is a fun place, such a great rate, you'll have more money in your pocket for the great restaurants just a block or two away, and it feels more like Montana than a chain hotel... isn't that why you came to Montana in the first place. This place is a mid-century cowboy themed gem. The attention to detail, which mattered in the middle of the 20th century, is great. It's be upgraded so it's not run down and dingy. But still, the carpeting is a collection of cattle brands. Come on! It's awesome. The front desk hospitality is a bit brisk, but the rooms are clean and cool. Air conditioning is marginal--at least in the room I stayed in in late July (worth knowing if you go in hot times). But it's cowboy AF! It's a unique place worth your stay. read more

I booked this for my brother bc he was driving from Idaho and needed to rest before he headed to Colorado..I thought this would be a Fun old fashioned spot..when I called the gentleman to book it was over Father's Day weekend and I thought I wouldn't get a room, but the gentleman was very nice.. The only downside was a/c in my brothers room wasn't working and he said it felt about 90 degrees in his room.. Let me start by saying that I am giving this lodge 5 stars, not because it's a "five star hotel," but because it is what it is and it's unapologetic about it. I have seen other reviews hollering "Gahhh! Stay away," but you should only follow their advice if you're accustomed to staying in corporate type hotels. As with other historic, older, privately owned inns, I will tell you: IF YOU WANT THE HILTON, STAY AT THE HILTON. Now, for the good part: Staff: check in was a breeze and the woman that checked us in couldn't have been nicer. Check in isn't until 4, but she told us that if we came back by 3, they would have a room ready. We went out for lunch and some shopping and browsing and by the time we were done, our room was ready. The room: Despite the pearl clutching over the "dirty carpets" is a little silly. Are there stains on the carpet? Yes. Absolutely. That carpet is probably 60 years old and despite the stains, it's actually clean and free of any debris or dirt or whatever. The room smelled and looked CLEAN. Is it loveworn? Yes. Could it use a bit of a facelift? Maybe - but ONLY if they can find the same carpet and wallpaper. Speaking of wallpaper, the cloth wallpaper in our room (103) was SUCH a fun throwback to old time "road trip/Rte 66 days." It's BLUE. And cloth. And was probably incredibly expensive when it was new. Yep. It's a little worn as well, but that's part of the charm! THE BED was clean and had a mattress cover (yes...I always check lol), the pillows were firm, and the sheets were crisp, but soft. I stayed in four hotels this trip and never slept so well. It was a great mattress. THE AC ISSUE: So look - Billings in the summer is freaking hot, so the old AC can only keep up so much, but they have fans in the room to help circulate the air. We got ours as low as it would go, pointed the fan at the bed and slept like babies. THE SHOWER: WORTH EVERYTHING! LOL! From Montana, to Wyoming, to North Dakota and back, none of the showers in the nicer hotels had as much water pressure or got as hot as this one. I loved it! Oh - so, once upon a time, there was a "whirlpool" feature in the tub. I didn't use it because, regardless of the "class" of hotel I'm in, I'd never use a jet tub that wasn't my own. They're never clean, ANYWHERE but your own home, so it wasn't an issue for me. Other reviewers have complained about the water mist as you enter the lobby from the courtyard parking lot. There's another door if you don't want to run through it, but frankly, it's a welcoming cool-off from the Montana heat. If it were at a restaurant courtyard, you'd probably welcome it! I don't want to give anyone any illusions that this is some polished "grand hotel." It's not. It's a cool, funky, awesome, old motel on the National Register of Historic Places, within walking distance of great shopping and food, and despite the classist comments about the people that are "permanent residents," is totally safe. I left all kinds of stuff in the car. Guess what? It was all still there in the morning. If you have a fun sense of adventure and curiosity, this place is an excellent find. If you need to be pampered and have your bottom powdered everywhere you go (and there's nothing wrong with it if you are) this probably isn't the place for you. read more

If you like to sleep in cool temperatures then I would not recommend. The room temperature was around 80%+ all night. Woke up around 3am in a sweat. Tried to turn down air but only warm air came out. Talked to the lady in the morning and she agreed and said she was hot in the night also! Said that's the thing with historic hotels- they control the air!! Pros: What a great find with tons of character! This hotel is super charming with lots of western flair. I stayed here last Thursday through Sunday while I was in town to photograph an event. I had a tiny budget for this trip as I shot this event for images for my portfolio and this hotel is very to the First Interstate Arena where the event was held. I'll say that the night desk person was delightful. The other two individuals that I interacted with, not so much. None of them were really helpful and didn't seem too knowledgeable about the area, and couldn't offer any helpful suggestions. What person that works at the front desk of a hotel doesn't know where to get coffee? One of the women told me to go to Denny's. Maybe I should have made myself clear and stated that I wanted good coffee. I checked in late and I was given a room on the bottom floor and it was adequate but upon looking in the bathroom, I was greeted with an orange sink from the sixties. The tub was a jetted (whirlpool) tub but the jets were pretty gross looking so I didn't partake. Upon further inspection of the room with the lights on, the carpet was filthy. I never walked on it without my socks on, it was that bad. In the morning after the first night, I woke up to the smell of cigarette smoke. That was the final straw. Not to mention I could see how really bad the carpet looked in the daylight. I asked to switch rooms and they put me on the top floor in a room with a slightly smaller bed. Other than that it was meh. The best part thing about this hotel was the nice night desk person and the 5.00 breakfast from the attached restaurant. I won't be staying here again and I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone. Also, I did book via Expedia so maybe that's why I got such a bad room. I know that hotels want you the book on their own site so they don't have to pay 3rd party sites such as Expedia commission. read more

We were excited to stay at a historic hotel. The hotel is in bad shape. The exterior is nicely decorated but the interior is horrific. The carpet was stained and dirty. We stay at pet friendly establishment and they are not filthy like the room (122). Someone left their dirty underwear under the sink in the bathroom.. The bed sheet had a hair on it when we pulled the cover back and a spider was also on the bed. The area is sketchy We had a terrible experience and it is not worth the $138 a night. read more

Just got back from my 3rd stay here. I've never actually paid to stay here because my company has picked up the tab. But for $80/night this is solid, clean, cozy, and warm place to stay if you're ever in Billings. If I was White instead of Yellow, I would've felt like I was staying at my grandparent's or Uncle's house. The extraordinarily friendly staff is even friendlier than in Hawaiin hotels. These aren't corporate trained fake-friendly staff, these people are old school, providing genuine Midwestern hospitality in which you feel like you're staying in their home. I even checked out well past the 11AM checkout time and they didn't charge me extra. I also ate at the restaurant for the first time...AWESOME hashbrowns! Loaded with butter and grease, but still crunchy! I just wish the toilet paper was softer...but luckily this time I brought my own roll of 3-ply Charmin. ;-) read more

This is "as good as it gets" for a somewhat kitschy, historic, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, western-themed, downtown, walking distance to local brewpubs, with a restaurant called Stirrup, featured in Hotel Impossible and just mildly haunted Billings, Montana mote circa 1949l! The staff is definitely five stars. Those who helped me. Thanks Nancy and "Steve" (Todd) are my new BFFs in Billings! As soon as I saw the name -- Dude Rancher Lodge -- I was sold and there! The Hotel Impossible (reality TV) feature was pure bonus. Since the airing, several of the rooms have been redone and are boutique chic. Some of the regulars are none too happy preferring the tried and true old-fashioned look. I'm glad I got to see things as they are/were for so many years. The new look is definitely a step up. Personally, I hope they hold a few rooms back. The lobby has also been beautifully redone. The fireplace is a major feature and the mantel -- one huge, rough-hewed timber is just stunning. The low-rise, two-story lodge surrounds an internal parking lot. First floor rooms have internal and external doors. You'll love the branded carpets and wall hangings (new rooms) which are the brands of the seven ranchers who were the original owners. Just in time for Halloween, I'm penning this review because -- naturally -- the Lodge is said to be haunted. Specifically room 226. A woman in white. Dude Rancher Lodge was built from old bricks reclaimed from a local hospital and school. The Stirrup/Dude Rancher Lodge Restaurant serves up big plates of breakfast, lunch, and dinner, You know? From the sounds of the footfall it was an adult and a child. At some point I heard a young girl crying. I was going to call the front desk but shrugged it off and fell asleep. In the morning, I inquired who was in the room above me. Okay...get a grip....No one was in the room above me. The room was out of commission. One of the rooms currently being renovated. Run don't walk away from this place. You can hear every little noise and I mean everything. Neighbors talked until early morning no one on duty to ask them to be quiet. Parking may be well lit but tight and cars coming and going make a lot if noise. Homeless are everywhere around so I was scared to walk my dog. Not worth 80 something dollars. read more

Needed a quick stop while passing through. Found this little hotel. Great price. When I arrived it was in a neighborhood that was questionable. When I pulled into the parking lot, it appeared there were several rooms on the lower outside level rented monthly. It was my 13 year old daughter and myself. I was uncomfortable parking and going in. But we did. The desk clerk was very friendly! Best part of the stay actually. When we got to the room, it was musty smelling, very outdated decor and furniture, needs major renovation. I looked out my room window often to make sure my car was safe. If I ever stay again (which I probably won't ), I will make sure my husband is with me. read more

We were first given a room that hadn't been cleaned then without much apology another room that wasn't much better. There was a clear blood stain on the comforter and the toilet was broken but constantly running. I was in town for work and had already booked four nights. The toilet got fixed on the third day after multiple requests to the staff. The person at the counter gave my wife attitude after multiple requests for some fresh towels. They don't clean the rooms, not during your stay and not likely after you leave. Another friend of ours briefly viewed her room, decided not to stay and was told that her reservation would only be cancelled if she "cleaned it herself" so that they could rent it. Run, don't walk away from place!!! When we first arrived at the hotel, we were welcomed by all the monthly renters and transients congregating in the courtyard where you are directed to park. Not a safe feeling to say the least! With all our luggage in tow, we had the amazing experience of walking thru the best feature of the whole place. The Dude Rancher water park! A corridor of water misters shooting hot water down on you as if to disinfect those lucky enough to be checking out and leaving. Our room was located on the second floor. Now, I got to tell you, my wife packs for a zombie apocalypse and I'm no little guy. With no elevator, my wife loaded me like a pack mule in the Grand Canyon. I had no hand rail but thankfully they supplied a rope for grip. We'll talk about my rope burned hands later! Reaching the second floor we were greeted with a thick cloud of Mary Jane. In a haste to get out of Cheech and Chong alley, My teenage daughter was the first to enter our room. She immediately burst into tears as the smell of skunk orgy overtook our senses. After a few minutes, it didn't seem to matter, we all got the munchies and decided to walk downtown for some Doritos. Upon our return, we discovered the air conditioning in our room wasn't working. It was over 90 degrees in there! We called the manager and at first we felt he was very sincere. He explained the ac has been on the fritz and he had someone working on it. We realized later after reading reviews of this place he was one good actor! The air hasn't been working for a long time! At first, I thought the decor of this place was kind of charming. I had a great experience at this hotel. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the interior is surprisingly welcoming and comfortable. My room looked more like a bed and breakfast than a standard hotel room. It was very clean, cozy, and the bed was so comfortable. I'm usually not too picky about accommodation while traveling, so I'm used to paying a low cost and essentially getting what I pay for - or less, in many cases. This hotel was very reasonably priced for how comfortable it was - especially when compared to other hotels at a similar price. The staff was friendly, the wifi was fast and reliable, the water pressure was good, and the room had personality and was tastefully decorated. It felt very warm and "homey." A breakfast coupon cost $5 and included a beverage. I ordered Eggs Benedict and hot tea, and it came out on a huge plate with a side of hash browns. Breakfast tasted great, wasn't greasy, and was very filling. This meal elsewhere would have easily cost $15. No complaints here. If I ever need an overnight in Billings again, I won't hesitate to book this hotel. read more

Have you ever wanted to visit a real life movie scene? This is the place for you! When you enter into your real keyed room it's looks like the place you go to do your last bit of hard drugs. If you aren't into drugs this is the place you take a $10 hooker. Carpet is so nasty my shoes needed shoes. Bed bugs and smoke smell galore. After 10 minutes I had to leave as I thought I would be robbed/killed/raped/ or addicted to drugs. My spouse said he would sleep standing up in his shoes rather than touch anything in the room. The reviews and pictures are 1000% deceiving. There is nothing cozy or sweet. You walk into this room catch herpes and smoke a pack of menthols all in one breathe. The other reviews say a/c doesn't work- probably true because there was a 5 in fan plugged in with the one lamp. Save a life. Save your own life and sleep outside in the street. read more

Just awful. I thought I was booking at a cool, mom and pop hotel, which I always look for when we travel. Instead, it's a ran down sorry excuse of a motel. There is a funky smell throughout the whole place. The carpets are tan down. There wasn't a clock of any kind in the room. We turned on the air conditioner and chuckled as it clang to life...then, after about twenty minutes or so, we realized it wasn't pumping out cold air very well. We put a desk top fan they had in the closet on top of the vent and went to dinner. Upon our return, we found our room to still be hot. I called down to the desk and told Cindy our air wasn't working. She cut me off and said "yeah, the unit on the roof isn't working right". I asked if we could move to the first floor, she said there were no lower rooms available and it wouldn't make a difference since the unit wasn't working right anyway. I asked her for another fan that she eventually brought up. Thank god it was only one night. read more

The check-in process was easy enough. Got my keys, walked up some incredibly dirty, stained stairs, got to my room and was flabbergasted at how gross it was. The floors were so stained, that if my pup had peed on the floor you wouldn't even notice. It smelled old. The bathroom was newly remodeled, and looked nice.... Except the toilet bowl was covered in poo, and there was a ring around the water line, like it hadn't been cleaned in weeks. They say pet friendly, but there is literally not a single blade of grass anywhere for them to eliminate. I woke up to a smell of something burning, like an electrical fire was about to start. I never could figure it out. At 6:00am I couldn't take it any more and was so disgusted at how gross the place was, I packed up and left. I would not recommend this hotel even one star. Stay clear. So we stayed here last Friday night, its was a record hot day for this region. we got to our rooms and it was so hot in the room so went to turn up the in room unit and they bolted over the controls so that you can't adjust it?? We go to the front desk and the only response it is "101 degrees out". So we asked for a fan and the lady begrudgingly gave as a small one that doesn't oscillate. We actually had to buy another for the night that does oscillate being that its a two bed room. Turns a mutual friend had to ask for a fan there once as well. The room was filthy and I'm laid back, it was legitimately gross, i sent ics and videos to friends and they said it looked like meth den. stains all over the walls in the bathroom that was a weird red wall paper that was textured from the 70's. the point at where the carpet meets the wall at least 3 inches out the carpet was noticeably filthy like just are vacuuming and they hadn't taken time to clean to quality standard in ages, like some dudes house in there 20"s while in college. and the pics on the website aren't a reflection of the rest of the hotel. This is definitely a unique hotel where the experience matched my expectations, but the price did not. We had reserved a room with two queen beds and upon arriving were told there were no such rooms left. Not a total problem, as that happens sometimes. I was more thrown off by the state of the room we were given. It is a kitschy motel, so I didn't expect clean modern rooms, but overall the place felt a tad dirty. On top of that, there were little things here and there (had to connect the TV ourselves into the wall, air conditioner didn't work properly, no vent/fan in the bathroom) that just had the whole experience feeling kind of off. I'd be more fin with this if the price didn't fall in line with many other quality hotels in the area- what we paid for the dude rancher seems a little high now. read more

I stayed at this hotel on September 20, 2018. The employees were friendly and helpful. The decor is definitely dated and kitschy, but I didn't mind because the price was good, the location was ok, and I was tired. In daylight the next morning I noticed how very dirty my room was. The carpet was sticky and very dirty. The bed linens didn't smell fresh; far from it. When I saw a used bar of soap on the shower shelf, I wondered if the used soap from previous tenants indicated the linens were used as well. They definitely need to do a thorough cleaning. read more

i had a reservation for teo nights at tge dude rancher lodge. july 6 & 7 there were homeless people everywhere around downtown and the lodge parking lot. my hummer woukd not fit in the small courtyard parking ,so i was told i would have to park in the overflow parking. there were no downstair rooms available. ckerk showed me 2 rooms that had wet carpet and strong odor of cigarette. ckerk said she "would not be offended if i didn't stay there". i said i would not stay and asked if they were going to charge me. she ssud no. i found a room at hilltop inn next to the airport. by the time i arrived in great falls i had to go to a doctor for severe allergies. im allergic to cigarette smoke. dude ranch charge me $194.60 doctor $150.20 prescriptions over $150.00 read more

Stayed at the Dude Rancher after a long day's drive from Minneapolis (on my way to Yellowstone). Didn't call until about 4:00 PM on the Friday before Labor Day and they were one of the few reasonably priced lodging options in Billings with availability. Wish I remembered the name of the woman who answered the phone because she was great. Friendly, efficient...and managed to still be when I finally dragged myself in at 11:00 PM. She said she was glad I made it and she even found a reason to give me a discounted rate on the room. The room itself was serviceable and clean, with a few subtle kitschy touches. The property itself was just dude ranch-y enough to seem kind of cute and nifty (but not corny) to this Big City girl. Safe convenient parking. Good water pressure. Premium cable. Free Wifi. AND free coffee in the morning. Basically I couldn't have asked for more for less than $100 a night. read more

We were drawn to the lodge because of the reviews about the kind staff, quaint decor and comfortable accommodations. We were not let down! Chris and Carol at the front desk were kind, helpful and quick with recommendations for places to go in Billings. We loved our room- a comfortable bed, table and chair, armoire and dresser and even a flat screen tv with digital cable. Our bathroom was clean and they had the best smelling soap. The shower was a bit short for us (we're both six feet+), but it was workable. The biggest challenge we had was the room being hot because, even in May, the hotel heat was still in since it got down to 40 at night. The front desk made sure we had a fan and we opened our window, so it did cool off eventually and we got to snuggle under the cozy blankets. We had breakfast in the restaurant for $10 + tip through a lodge promo. We loved the sausage links and French toast and year coffee wasn't bad either! This is definitely the place to stay in Billings. Do not settle for a chain hotel! read more
