For the uninitiated, Dudley Square is the busiest bus terminal in the MBTA system. It exclusively serves all buses, all of the time with multiple connections to nearby Ruggles station if you need the Orange Line. Service here is pretty frequent. The buses obviously have a much lower capacity than even Green line trains, so they can get pretty crammed during rush hour. However during off peak hours you rarely need to wait more than ten minutes for a bus to get you to your destination. The bus routes also overlap a lot, so there are usually multiple options to drop you within walking distance of a destination. The station its self has multiple signs to announce bus departures. Were you going to South Boston? Catch that 47 to Broadway, buddy. You want to hit Harvard square? Did you want to go through Allston on the 66? or up Mass Ave on the 1? Wherever you need to go, Dudley will connect to there pretty quickly. There are also a number of shops nearby. There is a Dunkin' Donuts if you need a quick snack, a fried chicken store, or Chinese restaurant right in the station. Sure, it is still outdoors, but you can grab your thing while still keeping an eye out for the bus. If you can go further afield, you can grab a quick bottle of wine for that party at the liquor store, last minute supplies at Walgreens, or hit any of the other small businesses right across the street. All of that is a clear win. It is not rail service, but service like this feels like that next best thing. That is great. Some reviews here go on to rate Dudley square as a neighborhood, and other bus riders. Sure, we can look at that. Like any transit hub, it attracts people with a lot of different agendas. Most of us just want to get from A to B. Some other folks at the station are beggars. Some are boisterously loud. Some are street canvassers. It is a public square, so any thing goes. However there is also a police station literally one block away. There are usually MBTA and Boston police parked right in the station, standing around in plain sight. While we might get annoyed with other riders, and they might be different forms of nuisances, this station is in no way unsafe. Just do your thing, and you will be home sooner than you know it. read more

There is so much history here at Dudley Station. You can find the little facts throughout the city and it's always something new for me. For starters, it used to be the Orange Line with an elevated service much like those in NYC. It was shut down in 1987 and replaced with the Silver line in 2002. There are so many buses that run from here to other parts of the city within Boston and outside of Boston, like Cambridge and Somerville). I love that you can always connect to other buses from here too. The location isn't exactly the best in all of Boston but it is what it is, like other parts of major cities. At least it's in front of a Police Station -- perhaps that makes it safer? lol. I use this station fairly frequently and it's always interesting seeing different people here while I am trying to get to where I need to be. read more

Dudley Square Station - Transportation Near Me - Boston, Massachusetts

Here is a reasons why. Just to note I live just 4 blocks away from here. 1.) The people who just hang around either near Joe's Famous, the machine near the little shop..just plane all around dudley: though they are just hanging out talking smoking. I personally am uncomfortable because you never know what will happen. It is especially creepy at nights and in the knew machine huts with the fake glass windows because a lot of people crowd in those. 2.) Those people who beg you for money right after they see you put money on your card or are in one of the stores (Dunken Donuts) watching you pay for food.: 3.) The preacher guy: if you have going to dudley in the morning than you may have seen this guy. This is my own personal annoyance with him and as much as it is with the guy who goes cart hopping on the train preaching out Jeasus. 4. )The machines: I have had total of $10 eaten by these dam things. So I would suggest if you get the chance go somewhere else to put money on your card. Also never leave anything on top of those things. I talk to the manic and the cleaning people once and they suggest not to because people put sticky gross stuff up there and no matter how many times they clean them it will always get thiry. read more

I just moved to Roxbury a few weeks ago and I am approximately a mile from the nearest T station so I had accepted the annoyance of getting around the city in advance...then I discovered Dudley Station which is a 10 minute walk away. I am fairly certain every bus within a 20 mile radius stops here...give or take a few. It's fabulous! Sure people don't really embrace their standing in line manners and you have to wait outside only quasi protected by a roof, but there is a DD on site and did I mention all of the buses?? I have never felt unsafe here, but have usually only been during rush hour so it's pretty well populated. I am hoping the taxi dudes at some point accept that I am in fact walking home from the station and do not need a ride, but appreciate their offers (nowstopasking). Now I am on a mission to figure out all the routes, this may take a while! read more

It's kind of funny that people are reviewing a bus hub, but hey, that's the sort of thing I love about Yelp! If you look at the crime stats from the transit police, this place doesn't have any more crime than any other busy transit hub. It is in a (gorgeous, historic, awesome) largely Black neighborhood, so some people think that makes it OK to say it's "sketchy" or "not a great area." I've never had any problems here. But yeah, it's a bus depot, there's lots of people, and it's easy to get to, so you're going to have criminals using people as a target and people with mental illness loitering and possibly bothering people. It's a city -- gotta expect these things and be careful, but please don't go dismissing people's home that you've passed through a couple times as "unsafe" or "not a great area" or any of your other ignorant comments. As for people's "standing-in-line manners" commented on by someone who's not from the neighborhood, I tend to think that people who experience a sense of community have the best manners -- letting people get on the bus first who have children, who are elders, who have disabilities, etc. If these were the buses you rode every day to get to work/school, you'd start to get to know people by sight anyway and start to feel like part of something, and then you too would be waving folks onto the bus or helping people with their walkers and baby carriages! read more

This depot has many buses servicing the local area and a major bus line (the "silver" line) which runs to downtown Boston. The reason I wrote this review, is to advice people who want free parking when they need to get into Downtown Boston or even travelers visiting Boston. There is free parking around Dudley Station which you can even park at for days at a time. The best I've found is on Washington St south of Dudley St google maps says it's approximately 2446 Washington St (there's always plenty of parking, but not too many scary people walking around like there are north of Dudley St). You can park your car and leave it there for a few days (except, I believe for Tuesday mornings when they do street cleaning and will tow your car- if you are parking for several nights you need to plan to move your car to a different street on the night that they tow PAY ATTENTION TO THE SIGNS ON THE STREET). Then you just take the Silver Line Bus out of Dudley square right into the heart of downtown (it runs to Downtown Crossing). I do this regularly as I live in Jamaica Plain a couple miles south of this area. A note about safety: This is not a great area. However if you park where I'm telling you to, you are around the corner from a big police station. I've never had my Toyota Corolla broken into there (and I leave it for days at a time occasionally), but I wouldn't advise parking a high end sports car overnight there. Also, do not leave any valuables in plain site and don't leave a GPS mount on the dash. I have never had a problem crossing the street and catching the bus and I've done it at night many times. That said, be more cautious than you normally would and move quickly to the bus terminal and back. (You're not going to get hurt, but you might get hassled for money) read more

I spend a lot of time here because my internship is on Dudley Street. The low rating is because while most people at the station are trying to get from point A to point B and are nice...there are some pretty scary people as well. I often just miss the 47 bus and have to wait 20 minutes for the next one and have been intimidated and really frightened a few times. There are some people there who are just...not great and perhaps not of the most stable mental status and they will scream and swear at you or stare and just make you uncomfortable if you're there for too long. Luckily there is a police station accross the street and the transit police are visible in the station, but the few negative experiences I've had make me pretty scared of this station and I've only been here a month. read more

This bus station has so many bus options that will take you all over Boston. It really is a convenient station...but it also has a bad rap. It's located in Roxbury, not the greatest part of town. There has been reported shootings at the station in past years. Not to worry though, there's a Police Station across the street and Transit Police Officers located at the station. They're always walking around... if you're not flashing around your expensive jewelry and purses. You Should be OK! read more

First off, I love the hustle and bustle of Dudley. People talking about danger around here in 2015 need a reality check. But Dudley, the end of Silver Line, is a poor excuse for mass transit for the people of Roxbury. Roxbury needs an actual T line (light rail) that continues up Warren all the way to Blue Hill Ave, if you ask me. read more
