Duke's Bakery was amazing 20 years ago...not so much anymore. Their bread is not as fresh. We bought many loafs a a few different occasions this year and it's just not as good as it use to be. AMAZING! That is all that really needs to be said about the glazed donuts. These things are magical. They put Krispy Kreme to shame. I could eat 20 in one sitting. Not going to say I could do it easily. But I could. They have an assortment of other donuts, cookies, and cakes, but who cares. You go here for the glazed donuts! PE classes at Marquette get to walk here every so often, but I had it 7th hour when I had it with Mr. Decourcey so I never got the privilege. Very close to Fast Eddies, so if you ever have to spend the night in your car after a night out, its a quick trip. read more

We ordered 4 cakes for a Celebration of Life for my father-in-law, Bob Carter. The cakes were absolutely delicious. The carrot cake and the German chocolate cakes rivaled my home made cakes which are both challenging to make from scratch. The white cake with strawberry and the chocolate were well received by adults and kids, alike. Duke's made my wedding cake nearly 50 years ago and they still bake the most delicious cakes anywhere. DO NOT get your wedding cake from here!!!!! So much was wrong! 1.They did not match the color of the fondant to what I wanted and they did not tell me they couldn't do it until the day he went to pick up the cake so it was to late to find someone who could (they could have airbrused it to get it the right color) . 2. They didn't cover the cake all the way and you could see the plate under the top layer because there was such a huge space. 3. I ordered the larger bottom layer to be red velvet and the smaller top layer white, but it was the other way around. 4. the cake had been made so many days in advance that by the time we got it it was all dried out and tasted nasty. We had to take a drink between bites because it was so dried out. 5. The cake was lopsided (see pics). If I had been the one to pick up this cake (a family member did it for me because I had to get my hair done), I would have demanded my money back, told them to keep it, and picked up a sheet cake from Wal-Mart because it would have been a better quality. I cannot believe I paid $167.00 for this plain undecorated 2 layer cake with it being of such half assed (at best) quality! I used to cater and do cakes for a living, but because I was already spreading myself thin doing everything myself. This just added to the stress read more

We have gotten dukes for years for our birthday cakes and cupcakes. I went and picked up my son's cupcakes and I can say I was pretty disappointed in the lack of effort on the decorating. The icing was just slapped on and the sprinkles (paid extra for) were very sloppy. (Yes I know they are "sprinkles") For the amount paid per cupcake, the icing could look MUCH nicer. He is taking them for his school birthday treat and the only reason the school won't think I made them at home is because of the box. I know the pretty swirls on top cost extra but I think that would have taken less time than spreading it with a knife and would have looked much nicer. I'm sure the taste will still be good but the last 2 times the decorating has been really crummy. read more

Must buy the peanut cookies. Like chocolate chip, but with peanuts instead. Sorry, not such a fan of the donuts, yum yums or danish, but LOVED the peanut cookies. This is a very small place, no seating. Coffee is from a vacuum pot, didn't even risk it. read more

Call me a blasphemer ... I know Duke is one of those good old family-owned Alton places that you're supposed to love, but I don't think I've ever had something there that really knocked me out. Half the things I've had practically choked me and coated my fingers and face with powdered sugar. It's not like the baked goods here are bad, but considering how everyone raves about it, and I think in terms of quality it's middle-of-the-road, it ought to be taken down a notch. read more

Best donuts in the area! Just moved here a few months ago and my sister highly recommended them but she and I usually don't have the same taste...I tried them anyway and was pleasantly surprised! My favorites are the traditional glazed, donut holes, and the twisted glaze ones! read more

Stopped in completely by chance. Very glad we did. It's a total throwback to the old days, with a quaint old fashioned store front, and lots of glass cases full of all kinds of great bakery goodies. Since it was October 25, there were lots of pumpkin pies, pumpkin, ghost, tombstone, and mummy shaped cookies. We had a blast, a couple good cups of coffee and some snacks for our trip to the Piasa Bird. Super friendly staff, too. We also saw a couple picking up a great looking two tier wedding cake. Avoid the cookies, Avoid the cookies. They may look good but usually old and stale. I bought 2 iced cookies @ $4.27 took 1 bite out and they were soooooo dried out and tasted a week old. I tried to exchange them for something fresher and young lady... Morgan wasn't willing. They lost me as a customer for good today. I say avoid. Poor Quality Cookies, Poor Service. We were in Alton visiting my niece with my husband and mother, we are from South County and frequently visit Alton. We were told to go to Duke Bakery because we were told they were great. We went last Friday and we probably should have heeded the warning signs and left but one lady was waiting on me and another younger girl was waiting on my elderly mother. I asked for a couple of the chocolate caramel cakes and my mother got donuts and a small round stollen. The lady that waited on me went into the back and came back to me and said she wouldn't like to give me the fresher ones in the back and was quickly scolded by the young girl in front of the customers when she didn't give me the stale ones in the case and when my mother got home the donuts were fresh but she said the round was extremely stale. She took one bite and threw the rest away. She said we should have walked out when that girl scolded the lady for giving me a fresher product. Just thought you should know. read more

The staff were knowledgeable,swift,efficient,and FRIENDLY... How have I not known about this bakery? We stopped by after seeing the bakery shops items in an off site location so we thought going to the shop itself would be a good idea. The glazed donuts are delicious and melt in your mouth, but my personal favorites are the yum-yums. I am so glad they have revived the classic yum-yum. For a while they were hard and over-done, but now they are pretty much just like they used to be. This bakery is part of Alton's history that is alive and well! My grandfather would go here after church when he was little and has wonderful memories of the great food! I now come here for all my bakery/sweet needs with my own children. So saying this place is consistently great is an understatement! My favorite is their bear claw! My parents got their wedding cake from Duke's back in 1966, and it was gorgeous. 4 tiers. I got my wedding cake from Duke's in 1989, and it was also gorgeous! This is my parents' 50th wedding anniversary year, and I'm ordering the cake for their open house from Duke's - as a replica of the one they made for them in 1966. Their cake decorator said they do that a lot and it's no problem. Just one more way to add a special touch to a special occasion - a replica cake made by the same place that made the original 50 years ago. I guess you could say we include Duke's in all our major family events now. :) read more
