I have a few clinics I have to attend throughout the year. All of the staff js super friendly and helpful. The parking can be difficult because there are so many people using disabled spots that don't have placards or plates. And there's a long walk from the lot to the clinic area. Add about 10-15 minutes extra to park and walk to and from the clinic. Everything is color coded so it's easy to remember where you're going and coming from. read more

I'm not quite sure how to review this clinic, but since one of my favorite doctors practices here, I thought I would drop a line. Duke Clinic is adjacent to Duke University Hospital. You can actually walk to and from the clinic and hospital via the skywing. When you enter, there is a welcome desk. The clinic is quite old (at least the building is), so it can be tricky to find the right floor and elevator where your doctor is located. You can ask at the welcome desk, or as I found out, you can just pop your head into any office and ask for help! All of the doctors, nurses, and staff that frequent the clinic hallways are all extremely friendly and seem to understand how one could get lost. There are maps of course and a directory on the wall, but between the "red elevator" and the "yellow elevator" etc., things can get a little confusing. No worries though. The welcome desk can help you and your doctor can even give you a little map. After my hmmm 3rd or 4th visit I had it down. LOL!!! Of course I can only attest to the abilities of my doctor, but she is top of the line. MD/PhD and has one of the best bed side manners I've ever come across. Available by email, cell phone, and home phone for emergencies, and always has a doctor on call. She is also available to be paged if necessary. Sweet, caring, and absolutely brilliant. I have a very complicated case of Lyme Disease and Duke Clinic has served me well. So well, that I live in NJ and travel to see my doctor two or three times a year. Other odds and ends, there is a gift shop. You can purchase water, juice, coffee, t-shirts, etc. Sarah P. Duke Gardens is located right across from the parking deck and is a lovely during any time of the year. It's a nice place to walk around and relax if you are early for your appointment or if you have a guest with you and they need to kill time. Parking deck is attached to the clinic, and you can't miss it. You do have to pay, it's typically 4 dollars for 2 hours. Just save your ticket, for you have to pay inside before you leave. Do not go to this clinic they will charge you twice. Their fees are insane and no insurance will cover it. I was charge 300 for the doc visit and 200 for the clinic fees. She listened to my heart and lungs and that was all no labs or anything. This is extortion. Really find anywhere else to go. read more

The reason I'm giving Duke Clinic five stars is because of their Transplant Psychiatrist, Dr. Benson Hoffman. Three years ago, I had a double transplant. In the last two years, I had consecutive bowel obstruction surgeries. My mental and physical condition after the second one became somewhat overwhelming. In my desperate time of decision making, Dr. Hoffman displayed to me his compassion, competence, and moral professionalism by bringing to light what would've been otherwise hidden in the dark, THE TRUTH. He made it much easier for me to analyze, then decide what I had been contemplating. This is adjacent to the Duke Hospital and you can walk across a skywing to the hospital itself. I'm not definite that there's always wifi at all of the facilities, but it's quite common for Duke apparently to keep the visitors occupied with food and drinks (there's a food cart that comes around) and having information stations at each major intersection of halls. It's actually a pretty nice place that definitely reminds me of my old college campus (University of Washington) with the gothic structures interspersed with the more modern buildings. People there are super friendly. Every doctor/nurse or whomever had a badge, had no issues with directing you to the right place or what not. Not sure if it's the hiring process, or some facility training, but either way, this hospital system seems to be on the right track when it comes to making even the most "nervous wreck" visitors welcome. Only reason I took a star away? The gift shop was closed for "reinventory". Come on. A hospital gift shop closed during visiting hours? That's sort of absurd. read more

This clinic is located beside Duke University Hospital (one street to the left of the hospital). There is even a tunnel that connects the clinic with the hospital but it is currently closed while construction is happening at the hospital. The location is beautiful with stone buildings, a very green grassy quad, and peaceful memorial garden. It is nice to help calm the nerves when entering for serious reasons. The first time I visited this location I had a pre-op appointment a week before a surgery scheduled at Duke University Hospital. I had an early morning appointment and was quickly processed through different areas to have various pre-op tests performed. All of the staff were professional but warm and caring as well. They made every effort to reassure me as the gravity of the surgery I was facing hit me. My second visit was for a post sugery appointment with the neurosurgeon. Unfortunately this visit was not as pleasant as the first. I had a complication from the surgery which may end up requiring a second surgery. To try and avoid another surgery they had to perform a spinal tap and draw off some spinal fluid. After being stuck with a needle multiple times and an inability to numb the correct spot I was released and told to make an appointment with the radiology appointment at Duke University Hospital the following day so they could perform the procedure by sight rather than by feel. Overall my experience with this clinic was very good but I can't give it 5 stars due to the failed spinal tap torture I had to endure here. TIP: Schedule early for pre-op appointments. You breeze through in no time but will note when you leave that it is so full that people are even seated outside the waiting area in the hall waiting. NOTE: Take exit 15 off Durham parkway and bear to the left and then go straight across Erwin road. The clinic will be straight ahead and parking garage on the left. Exit 14 says it is for Trent Road / Erwin Road but is much more confusing to find where you are going. NOTE: You do have to pay to park but they take credit / check cards so no need to worry about carrying cash. read more

I had surgery at Duke Plastic Surgery Clinic in the 1990s The surgery was to correct a minor facial defect, a depressed cheek bone. Duke used a product manufactured by W L Gore and associates that is known as SAM//ptfe/Gore tex and was discontinued for "business reasons" in 2009, Gore stated. I was told at the time that is was a perfectly safe product that could be easily removed if removal might be necessary at any future date. I have been having problems with severe pain, facial swelling around the implant material, and bone marrow edema confirmed by MRI for nearly two years. All others causes of my problems have been ruled out. I was referred to Duke for evaluation, diagnosis and treatment via removal if needed. The original surgeon--he is no longer with Duke--told me via text my current diagnosis is suspected implant material infection. During my recent appointment to discuss my problem with a Duke surgeon I was told that removing the implant material would cause severe disfigurement of my face and my scalp. I tried to complain to Duke about my not having been told of even the remotest possibility of such in 1996. Duke's reaction has been to refuse to treat or see me again in any capacity. I was informed by a lady named Kayleigh (sp?) via phone yesterday that the decision was made by the head of plastic surgery at Duke, Detlev Erdman. I have begged for help in determining if I do in fact have implant material infection. I have begged for help or an appropriate referral elsewhere. I clearly stated I do not desire to litigate or seek monetary compensation and that I am only seeking help. I have approached Risk Management (Kim) and a patient coordinator (Cari Banks). Duke refuses to treat or help me in any capacity and accepts no responsibility for their lack of responsibility and lack of compassion. I cannot find a surgeon to treat me. I have been told of no way to determine if the material is infected. I have been suffering for nearly two years. I have endured course after course of antibiotics prescribed to me by well meaning doctors since November who have no guidance to offer. I have no recourse that I know of. Please beware of Duke's lack of ethics and compassion and their inability to take any responsibility for their actions. Beware of their greed. Beware that patients and their suffering do not matter to Duke. If you have had a similar experience with the facial implant material I've described, please contact me at 336 254-2429. I was told all other patients who received said implant material are "lost to follow up". I cannot be the only victim of Duke's use of such material and callous disregard for the outcome as regards the patient's suffering and health. I know the material was so new, the surgeon used samples of the implant material for my surgery. If you know of any surgeon who might be able to help me, please contact me. You think you're a valued client? Duke Gastroenterology will quickly teach you otherwise. It starts with the imperious-sounding greeting on the automated attendant telling you that "if your call is emergent" you should call 911. It really says that, condescending tone and all; call and listen for yourself. It goes downhill from there. I asked my primary care doc for a referral to a colonoscopy provider near my home and he sent me to a nearby Duke clinic. The Duke bureacracy slowly awoke and after several attempts over a period of weeks, I got an appointment several months out at a facility far from my home. That should have been my first clue. As the time neared, an unexpected robocall instructed me to present myself for an unexpected pre-colonoscopy inspection. Long story short, no one would tell me why I needed to appear in person vs. having yet another phone interview. Finally, a sullen clerk admitted that they expected me to show up at 7:30AM to do bloodwork and "stuff like that." Blood draws are always sent off to labs for analysis and the results returned days later but when I pointed that out, the clerk was clearly displeased at my temerity. Smugness fairly oozed from her as she enjoyed showing this uppity client (that would be me) who was in charge. It was made very clear that I could show up as ordered for the early AM blood draw and "stuff like that" or I could take a hike. So I took the hike and am now shopping for another provider that will at least try to pretend to give a crap. I don't need to have my rear end kissed, but it bothers me to have to pay to have it kicked, you know? Duke has some extremely talented care providers, one of whom saved my life several years ago. It's a shame that some of their gatekeepers are smug, arrogant mediocrities. read more
