I don't know what happened to this location, but after today's visit, I drive a few miles more to shop at a different Ace. Stopped in this morning looking for a water shut off valve for my sink. Not knowing much about the part I needed, I went looking for an associate. He was in the next aisle doing nothing, I asked him for help. All he did was point to the section of valves and ran away. In the past, they would help you find the exact parts you needed. And the two cashiers could not have been more bored and seem like they were doing my a favor for shopping there. read more

I stopped in with a unique-size screw that I couldn't match at Menards or Home Depot. The guy who helped me knew exactly what he was talking about, they did not carry it either. I've been looking for these exact screws for almost a year now for a project I'm working on but could never identify the size or part no. He wrote down what I needed to Google them and I found them instantly on Amazon using the numbers he gave me. I wish I would have gotten his name. I may just call the location and get it so I can update my review. Excellent customer service. So rare these days. I ended up shopping and spending over $50 on Christmas gifts before leaving. read more

If zero stars was an option I would choose that.I brought my two Anderson screens in to be replaced.I was charged over $70.00 for a smaller screen and a larger screen.While this amount was fairly expensive (I thought),I accepted this and paid. I picked my screens up the next day and brought them home.Upon getting home I noticed the metal around the larger screen was completely dented around the entire screen. I called to speak to the manager and brought the damaged screen back in. He refused to accept any responsibility for the damaged screen. When I told him the metal had not looked like this prior to them handling it ,he said the person who worked on it was not there. There was no attempt to accept responsibility or rectify the situation. While the screening itself is fine, I will now have to order another screen from Anderson for an additional 70.00 (at least) for the damage they did to the frame. read more

On Thursday, Apr 27, my dad and I went into Ace to get 2 car keys cut. It was the keys with the remote, but we just needed the key part cut (as we still have the original remotes, we just wanted to save $150-$200 per key). The gentleman at the key cutting section began asking rude questions as if we had done something wrong. He barked, "Where did you get this key from?", "Who sold it to you?". We explained that the plastic case shattered and we just needed the key cut and how expensive it was so we went this route. I purchased 2 blanks (with plastic shells) on eBay and just needed them cut. (I also brought in the originals as proof, even with the shattered cases.) He continued to complain about the internet taking his business. We then asked if he sold them in store and that we'd be happy to purchase it from him to give him business. He replied that he didn't and then refused to cut the key. His parting words: "Why don't you go to the dealer and get it done?". This person, quite obviously, wasn't an employee but someone involved in management. Here's a tip: don't be an asshole to a potential customer that's trying to give you money AND even offers to purchase the same product from your store to give you the business. Good choice if you have more money than time. I remembered an ad that offered two for one replacement keys. The staff of four salespeople plus a cashier checked it out and agreed, but only if I brought in a coupon. They couldn't share a coupon with me. "The boss is a stickler about that." I imagined a Barney Fife like manager in a back room cubicle emoting "Ang' we have to nip this frivolous coupon sharing in the bud! If not, once the word gets out, we'll have a line on coupon moochers that wraps around our crummy little store in no time." Sounds like a clear case of penny wise and pound foolish, I'll stick with Menards from now on, where the service is more friendly and they always try to make a deal that makes sense to a customer, regardless of the size of the transaction. read more

Several bad experiences here. From unknowledgable high school kids unwilling to help to unknowledgable grandpa types not knowing where to find items, to just a flat out poor selection. Funny that another guy leaving a review waited at the back counter for 10 minutes while the guy was on the phone because I also had that exact same experience, except it wasn't a key. I was told by two other people that the guy behind the counter knew where the propane torch tanks were and i waited ten minutes for him to tell me it's not his department and I should go ask someone else. He reluctantly walked me back to the front of the store after telling him that no one else could help me. I tried supporting local stores rather than big box stores, especially when I need something small and/or quick for a project, but I can't do it. I'd rather take the extra 5 minutes to drive to Lowe's and support the evil corporations because the service and selection and prices are terrible. Also, the parking lot is atrocious. read more

I had a different experience with this store. I received NO SERVICE! I called the store in the afternoon asking if they could cut a car key for me with a chip in it. The person on the phone told me no problem as long as the key didn't have to be cut in the middle which it didn't . Ok so I go to the store and it's another story. I talk to the high school kid behind the counter to see if he will cut the key and he says he has to ask his manager .the kid goes to ask the manager who can't give the kid an answer because he is on the phone ordering paint. Kid comes back 10 minutes later and says he needs to go and ask the owner . Kid comes back and says the owner says no. Ok now I've been here for a while so I asked why not? I asked to see the owner . This is when the fun begins. The owner comes out with a very bad attitude ... Telling me about how he's not going to do it because I'm not buying his 80 dollar key . He needed to pay for this expensive machine bla bla bla very rude! Anyways I told him that one of his employees told me it was ok to just come up and they would do it. Then he says did you get a name???? Well I didn't think I needed to in order to get a key cut for a car. That place is full of attitude and lack of service! Never again!!!! Generally have a good selection of the hardware items I need. Staff is very helpful. Rarely have I been in the store and not approached by someone who asked if they could help. I usually get someone that reminds me of my Grandpa helping me out. Very old school, but knowledgeable. This is my go-to hardware store when in the area. read more

Funny I had same experience as Louis F. Same thing I called to have a couple chip keys cut and the person told me it would cost a couple of bucks extra cause I had my own blank chip keys, when I get to the store I got the same song and dance that Louis F. got from probably the same Mr. "Attitude manager"! I recently called ace hardware to acquire information on N95 mask availability the man who had spoken to immediately asked me why I was calling & who I was after I had told him that I was customer who wanted to simply know the availability for these masks he began to loose his patience & asked where I lived & who I was repeatedly. After trying to explain to him one gain why I was calling I asked to speak to the store manager he claimed to say he was the manager. I then expressed my concern to him that asking someone who they are or where they live is not an appropriate way to greet a customer on the phone. Once I did he began to yell racial slurs through the phone I then told him that if he did not change his tone & behavior I would report him to corporate. After that he threatened me if I even tried to report him. So after that entire conversation on the phone I gave up & hanged up on him. So after that experience I do not recommend going to this store specifically or even trying to call it is one of the worst places to get service as a customer BEWARE!!!. read more

I couldn't believe my ears when I went into this Ace Hardware on Sunday... I had a few keys that i needed cut and the guy in there wouldn't do it! Said it would damage his key cutter... I went straight to the Ace Hardware on 147th and Cicero and they guy in there GLADLY cut my keys for a dollar each! and GUESS WHAT?!? his key cutter is just fine Terrible service... had me feeling like a fool No body that I know even GOES to Ace Hardware except for such things as having a key made or other little machining tasks or hard to find items... (Menards and Home Depot have screws and hand tools as far as the eye can see) but if they are going to point me to the door for something as simple as cutting a KEY then I'm sorry but I have no use for you and i will actively tell people how terrible your service was and still is and would GLADLY direct them to the Ace on Cicero. This place is THE WORST place to go and find things you need. The owner is mean and not helpful. He yells at his employees right in front of customers. Both managers of the store are rude and do not help you either. Everyone is so rude when you call and most of the time when you ask to speak to a manager you are sitting on hold for 10 minutes. Then when the manager does answer he says they do not have what you're looking for. However when i go up to Ace and i look for it, i find it by myself and i'm pissed off. And the workers on the floor never ask you to help they are always talking to each other and laughing and pointing at customers. I will never return to this store. It is the worst customer service ever and you get no help when you go. read more

I had one of the best ever customer service experiences this weekend at Duke's Ace Hardware! I am in the service business and I appreciate it when a business exceeds my expectations! Because I had several projects, I encountered three different people in the store all of whom were courteous, knowledgeable and just had a "can do it" attitude. I have used them in the past and have always been happy, but a Menard's is closer to my home. I went to Menard's first and they could do what I need to have done, Duke's hardware had the material and was willing to do what I needed to have done. I also got a great deal on deck stain - they had exactly what I needed on sale! They will be my first source for all of my future projects! Thank-you! read more

I was being threatened and needed to change the locks on my house so I bought new set ups at Dukes. The manager was so kind and compassionate. He recognised that I was clearly shaken and without asking anything personal he just walked me through it and showed me how I'd change the knobs and bolts. When I got there before 3, they wouldn't let me in and said they were closing early. 5 employees walked by and wouldn't let me make my purchase. I love this place. Everyone is always friendly and very helpful and knowledgeable. And, most importantly, they're never condescending. I'm a 58-year-old female that does her own minor electrical, plumbing and other home repairs. If I get stuck, or need guidance or recommendations on tools, etc., they are always more than helpful without a condescending tone and without handing me a set of floral-decorated tools. I'm a BIG fan of this particular hardware store! I've been in there a lot lately and everyone is very helpful and friendly! I've had some really minor repairs done and was almost afraid to ask because I thought they would think they're silly but NO, they were only too happy to help me out! They fix the smallest things and I REALLY appreciate it because it's usually something that means a lot to ME! We NEED this in our neighborhoods! Really bad experience today. Literally 4 times as many employees as customers, but they were all too busy to help us. The cashier confirmed this when I complained.....she said "yes, they are too busy today." Both manager AND owner in the store, but could care less if anyone needed help! Why open your doors???? Put up a sign that reads "We are closed today, because we are far too busy to help paying customers". I have never, ever experienced a retail store that put their needs ahead of the customers. Sadly, they are our local ACE, but I'll gladly go elsewhere. They don't need anyone's business. read more
