They said that they did it because I asked the size of the mother and discussed the potential size of the puppy. I just think that's kind of weird. I thought you were supposed to ask a lot of questions when you adopted a dog we are semi retired and home all the time we have a large property in El Cajon with large fenced in area. I video taped my entire property for them to view. In addition, we also own another property in Arizona. We are in a very good place to have a pet we've adopted many times from shelters sometimes across the country! I've even paid for dogs to be sent to me from rural shelters in Mississippi to save their lives . I have never gone through the mental anguish as I have gone through dealing with this rescue. The emotional drama of going back-and-forth with them over the last couple weeks has absolutely worn me down. My heart is broken and I am crying. It is very emotional... certainly, they must realize that people to get very attached when they are about to adopt a puppy. These folks that I had to deal with had no compassion or humanity as to the pain that I am feeling. The foster mom Lesley was amazing, compassionate and kind. I wish I could've just out directly with her. I was told that they would notify me if anything changed that there were no applications for the dog that I wanted. I asked for the ZELLE to pay them. They told me not to rush that there were no other applications and that they would let me know if anything changed. Well, they did not; they simply adopted the dog out to what was supposed to be a temporary foster. My heart is absolutely broken. I am crushed to the core. Please be careful dealing with this rescue group. I understand that they are all just volunteers, but certainly they must understand that people become attached . when I expressed how upset I was and that I couldn't understand how this happened. They basically told me to put my adoption process on hold which I think means they won't allow me to adopt from them. I don't know. I guess there's other puppies that are available from that same litter. I was not aware. I thought they were all adopted, but I don't think that they will allow them to be adopted to me . Essentially they would rather have the dogs never find a home rather than to be adopted to someone who really wants the dog. Pretty absolutely amazing if you ask me. They also were very against me fostering to adopt, however, allowed someone else to foster her and after five or six days, they apparently decided to adopt her. They had initially told me that the foster did not intend to adopt her and that I could pick her up when I got back from Arizona. Today, I leave to go home to San Diego and I am so sad because I won't be able to pick up my girl... I hope the person that has her gives her a good and can give her an amazing life . I will not have that opportunity.

I would not recommend Baja Rescue because they have you to sign a contract that states if you have…read moreto return the dog, you must return them to Baja Rescue. Well, I adopted a puppy and had many unforeseen issues, including my older dog rejecting the new puppy, and they would not take her back. They told me, if it was an urgent issue all I could do was pay one of their trainers $50 per day to give her back. They had no fosters available yet here I was liable, per the contract. They hid behind their monitors/phones texting with no one wanting to help at all. They accused me of not wanting to spend the money to train the puppy along with being very, very rude to me when all I wanted was for them to live up to the rules of their very own contract. If they are going to write a contract as such, they need to follow through and take the puppy back quickly. This is how bad things happen to animals when an owner can't keep the dog for many reasons, or the dog is not a good fit for the household. If they truly care they should adhere to their own requirements. Long story short, with time and training and patience, and after 6 weeks of being abandoned by Baja Rescue entirely, and moving forward as a loving animal lover, we will be keeping the puppy afterall. But, this isn't always the case for some people and if Baja Rescue truly loved animals they would stand by their word and their contract or not have that in the contract at all Therefore, I do not recommend this rescue to anyone. They do not follow through and their actions reflect neglect of animals.

We went to the Humane Society and Helen Woodward, then my friend told us that there were dogs for adoption at the Point Loma farmers market. We met Babs at the farmers market and learned more about A Way Home for Dogs, and she was open to us fostering a rescue dog initially to see if adoption would be a good fit, which I really appreciated. She offered to bring the two dogs we were most interested in to our house after the event so we could meet them each one on one. After meeting the two dogs we asked to foster (to hopefully adopt) a friendly pug. Babs was very honest about him and how to manage and care for him. She left us with leash, crate and treats and dropped off food for him the next day. She has been highly responsive to questions and has gone out of her way to support us in the process including providing supplies and temporary care. Babs is fiercely protective of her rescue dogs who she's nursed to good health, trained and prepared for adoption. She genuinely cares about the dogs and helping them find good families/homes. In addition - and what she's most known for -- she helps people find lost dogs for FREE! Babs and A Way Home For Dogs is truly amazing. Though we've dogsat many times, I hadn't owned or lost a dog before so I wasn't familiar with A Way Home For Dogs but after we started fostering when I talked with friends about our experience many spoke highly of Babs and her nonprofit organization. Our very first experience with them happened during a tough time--COVID, and it was only our second Christmas in San Diego after moving from Hawaii. Being away from home during the holidays was hard, but their team created a drive-through Christmas event that brought so much joy to our family. The volunteers were amazing, and you could feel how much heart they put into making the season special for everyone. My children were given toys and my pet was given treats and a toy. They also gave a free fresh Christmas tree. I cried in appreciation for several days everytime I walked out into our living room and saw the Christmas tree. It brought a bit of normalcy during COVID. Since then, we've participated in several of their holiday and pet-friendly events, and each one just keeps getting bigger and better. Their annual Unleash the Holiday Cheer celebration is one of the best community events in San Diego. They offer so many FREE activities and giveaways for military/veterans including (from the flyer 2025): * A free concert * Crafts and professional Santa photos * Gifts from Santa for the kids ** A Pet Costume Runway Show with big prizes ** - we haven't participated in this but I always look forward to what they participants come up with * Story time with the Candylane Princess * Face painting * Carnival games * A "Puppacino Station" for the pups * Foam party, bubble artist & even a Swifites station * FREE Kong pet toys * FREE vet care vouchers for all attendees - We benefited from this last year. The garbage disposal broke in our home and we couldn't wash dishes. At the same time one of our dogs needed a blood test and procedure done on them. I'm so grateful for the vet care voucher. * 1000+ unwrapped Christmas gifts donated to Active Duty Military & Veterans **This year civilians were able attend for free.** It's community effort, and it shows. The vendors are awesome, the volunteers are friendly, and the atmosphere is always warm and festive. That's when I found out we were rejected, because they don't think people with new babies should adopt a dog. I reached out, because we were interested in adopting a dog, after our old man dog passed. Followed up with a text within the day, just to see if the dog we wanted was still available. Was told over text that they'd get back to us soon. Well, 5 days elapsed, and I heard nothing about our application. I reached out via email to ask if the dog we wanted was just gone. At that point, I get a terse email saying, "Will you prefer not to adopt dogs to people with brand new babies. A new baby is so much work. Our experience has been that people often return and adopted dog because it's too much work. We highly recommend you wait for a couple of years." I respond: That's not gonna happen. I suffered from allergies, and while it's not a proven hypothesis, there's evidence to show that animal exposure at a young age can help mitigate allergies. And we have a nanny during the weekdays. You could have told me you didn't want to consider us, instead of just ignoring me. A little 'tude-y? Sure. But finding the right dog has been a frustrating process, and getting ghosted by an agency that says they're responsive is rude. Then she gaslights me by saying "You could've responded in a nicer way and we probably would've talked with you." And I call bullshit: So you reject our application, but don't tell us until I reach out for a 3rd time. And at that time tell us it's because you don't think people with babies should adopt dogs, but it's somehow my fault for being annoyed? You have a right to your opinion, and I'm sure it's frustrating dealing with people who can't stick to their commitments, but the least you could have done was respond. You closed the conversation, not me. Adoption is already a hard process, especially now that our family has more requirements. The least a standalone agency can do is be responsive, transparent, and honestly, less judgy. Getting ignored and rejected without a conversation, and a blanket rejection based on what our family looks like was shocking to me.
