I've lived in San Diego for almost 20 years and didn't know there was a wine region here! The couple who runs this vineyard was very friendly and helpful. I loved the Malbec and bought a bottle. Dry viognier was also very nice. We also tried the Debit, which is a very ancient vine from Croatia, and very rare. This was a full-bodied, fruity (apple notes) wine, but not at all sweet. Yesterday, I took my wife on a drive through the east county when late in the afternoon we noticed a charming little winery and vineyard named after the s little town of Dulzura. We drove over the little bridge that straddles beautiful Dulzura Creek that winds its way to Otay Lake. Once over the tiny bridge you are face to face with a beautiful homestead dating back to 1895. Flowers surround the front of the two story homestead and overall the grounds are inviting and tranquil, thanks in part to the sound of Dulzura Creek and the many native trees that surround the property. Once inside the tasting room which, is both quaint and historic as, it was once a pickling house built in 1905. A large cabinet filled with with artifacts and historic items that help tell the story of this hidden gem. Both Sarah and Grant spent ample time with us during our tasting imparting useful and interesting tidbits about their wines, all of which I enjoyed. I don't remember a single winery in San Diego County that had as many delicious wines. With a wide variety of whites and reds you will not be disappointed. I have to thank Sarah and Grant for an absolutely great afternoon in which my wife and I were treated to great wine and wonderful conversation! There are other wineries in the area and you're close to Tecate. We did not try any other wineries but, I can say with certainty that Dulzura Winery is a destination spot not to be missed! Found this winery after spending the day at the Farm Animal Refuge and it was delightful! Sarah and her husband are wonderful people and they make delicious wine. The winery and their home with an air bnb above the wine tasting room is on land that dates back to 1885! You can feel the history in this place. It's just beautiful. Wow! I just read that really negative review by Lisa! She was not happy! I feel bad that she could not enjoy this wonderful spot. But, since I have been visiting this place on a regular basis for seven years, I would like to clarify a few things. First, yes there are many rusty things. They are antiques. This is a ranch from the 1880's with a beautiful and charming home built in 1885 and still intact. Many of the old ranch implements are set out on display and they are rusty. Some of the chairs are ancient and hand made. But, none of this has any impact on the cleanliness of the location. The tasting room is small, bright, clean and just right for a small family owned vineyard. If you are there, there is a cool pamphlet describing the history of the Clark Ranch - now Dulzura Vineyard and Winery - still in the Clark family. Second, there is a cat. And a dog named Willy. My advice to the unhappy reviewer: don't visit France, Italy, Portugal, Spain or Rome where you will certainly encounter dogs in the restaurants and cats in the kitchens. But, there is no food served in the Tasting Room so what is the problem? And, by the way, this location is not only pet friendly but child friendly as well. Third, gosh, Grant and Sarah are two of the nicest and kindest people I know. But, they are owners, not waiters or temps trying to make a sale and get a tip. They have patience but when that is worn they will pretty much give back the vibe they receive. Good for them! Finally, the wine! OMG. The recently bottled Rosé and the environmental yeast Sauvignon Blanc Wild are to die for. Read all those good reviews, then make the trip and judge for yourself. read more

I was surprise to run into this place. On occasion when I go to Mexico and cross from tecate I venture on to try different restaurants and such. But this time I stop for a glass of wine. I was not disappointed at all. The owner was a pleasant guy who you can tell really enjoys making wine. His selection was just right for the area and he was very nice to discuss the grapes, areas of cultivation, climate, etc. he took the time to also poor some good wine and the quality was good enough for me to go home with two bottles. I like the tasting room. It was old west like and clean. Overall as part of a wine tasting weekend in that area I would for sure come here. I am planning on going there for another weekend to just visit the rest of the wineries around and enjoy the area. A very pleasant and unexpected adventure for sure. read more

Really enjoyed the wine tasting experience at Dulzura Vineyard today. The 94 wine corridor has grown up and the is the place to start. Grant and his wife were fantastic hosts and I especially recommend the 2021 Sauvignon Blanc, the 2021 Fume Blanc, and Rose of Syrah - the best Rose I have tried. The 1885 property is also a treat to see. Get in quickly before these wines sell out! read more

Stumbled upon this place with my boyfriend when we were driving through southern San Diego. Such a great find. The winery is in a historic ranch from 1885. The tasting room is cozy and welcoming and the people are super friendly. Wine was delicious, my favorite was the Sauvignon Blanc, but you really can't go wrong. They have a great variety of reds and whites and even a vin gris (rose). Worth checking out as I believe this is one of the closest wineries to downtown San Diego. Way more homey than any of the over the top Temecula wineries (the wine is better too!) read more

My wife and I went for a hike at Hollenbeck Canyon Preserve with our Samoyed. Little Did I know she had plans to lure me to a winery; enter Dulzura Winery at the Clark Ranch. We rolled up and Chester the Chesapeake Retriever/chocolate lab mix greeted us with some woofs. Dog friendly! In goes the Samoyed, my better half and myself. We begin our five tastings with whites to reds. Everything was terrific. Sarah, the lady of the house/winery is a chemist and her husband is the engineer-between the two of them they have crafted some great wines. Lots of terrific history here going back 140+ years in the family and San Diego. Soak it all in along with the views! We will be back. Definitely worth visiting and the wines are worth buying. This vineyard is beautiful, and the wines are delicious. I was surprised at how many varietals they have. Huge variety of wines. The winery is on a property that has been owned by the same family for over 100 year. It was just as interesting to learn about their family history as it was to learn about their winemaking process. They made us feel welcome, starting with the old man Ev and his dog that come out to greet every new guest. Great place to take a date. read more

Absolutely unbelievable experience. Wasn't sure what to expect but this was the best winery experience I have ever had. Relaxed atmosphere friendly wine maker who was eager to share his extensive experience making awesome wines. The tasting room is really cool and there are many wines to chose from, the grounds are nice and we enjoyed our picnic. There is also hiking. We spent 2 hours tasting then left with a half case of wine that not only were tremendous tasting but also the best tasting. This place is amazing. The wine is far better than any wine you can get in San Diego- Temecula does not come anywhere close. I heard about the winery recently, so my husband and I went for a visit to check out the Cab Franc which is a favorite of ours. The winery is lovely, the wines are spectacular and rival any from Napa! The Cab Franc is delightful and all the white wines are dry and lovely for summertime drinking. Tasting prices are really reasonable and the wines well priced. Take a ride East and enjoy the wonderful scenery, walk the grounds with Chester and bring home some delightful wines! Great wine! Great, friendly, knowledgable staff. San Diego East County is making some terrific fine wine. It's not a long drive and beautiful country (except for the eye-sore casino bldg (what were you thinking San Diego?)) I highly recommend a drive to Dulzura Winery to discover some little-known fine wine. It's refreshing to see small scale boutique wineries working hard to do their craft. Well, absolutely the best wines in the county. A wide variety of wines and some wines that I thought wouldn't do well in our climate, but very happily surprised to see a Cab Sav, Cab Franc and Zin that are really top tier commercial wines. I love many of the winery locations around the county and Dulzura has a really nice winery, but for me it's all about the quality and consistency of the wines.
