EXCELLENT service! We were well taken care of. Although they weren't offering tastings at the time, we sampled 3 wines before making our pick. All the reds we tasted were delicious, but we went with a full bodied, tannic Malbec. The person leading our tasting even gave us a 2-for-1 deal for our glasses. Each of them were a healthy pour. The people working here are so kind and accommodating. They gave my mom and me an extra wine tasting glass because there was a specific one I really wanted to try, which was such a thoughtful touch. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, and the outdoor seating is gorgeous. It was a little too cold for us to sit outside, but I would have loved it otherwise. I also think it's really cool that they let you bring your own snacks. Overall just a really pleasant spot. This place is such a fun winery out in Julian. I was in the area helping out a friend with apple picking, and a worker from the winery was kind enough to give us extra bottles of water for our hard work. The inside was very clean and relaxing, and the staff were friendly and helpful. I was going to order a flight of wines, but decided on a full bottle of their apple wine instead that was recommended of the staff. It was very crisp and sweet and light. I stopped by here to help a friend harvest crab apples that reside on their estate. After working hard, I was relaxing on their patio as they were opening. The staff asked if I was waiting for wine tasting and I explained I weas just relaxing for a minute. Instead, they offered us cold waters which I was very thankful for! So we decided to get a bottle of wine bit later and ordered the apple wine. It was excellent, although a little sweet. Very refreshing though. They also had some tasty snacks available and a hot food was available outside as well. Overall, it was a great experience and I am especially grateful to their very friendly staff. read more

This was our first time visiting Julian, and someone at Calico Cider recommended we try Volcan Mountain Winery because they have the best view. When we got there it was the one place that had plenty of guests on a Friday afternoon, but not too crowded. Mel greeted us right away, and mentioned they weren't doing tastings that day, just glasses and bottles. But while we were deciding what we wanted to drink she let us taste quite a few options anyway to help us decide. The wine was great, but Mel was a true treat. We made conversation with her as she still walked around making everyone else feel attended to and she treated everyone like a friend. I mentioned to her that I forgot to apply sunscreen and she reached behind the counter for some and took me outside to spray me down. Talk about service. Then Mel gave us a full photo shoot inside because she wanted us to remember our first time in Julian. Aside from her great service, she knew a ton about their wine selection and was able to tell us all about flavors. We will 10/10 be back next time we're in town. Thanks again Mel! The Mrs. and I headed to Volcan Mountain Winery today after a great lunch at Julian Beer Company. Lisa at Hawk Watch winery suggested we pay them a visit. Volcan was only selling wine by the glass or bottle. So no tasting flights were offered. I don't know if that is the norm, but no one was complaining. Mel(Short for Melissa or Melinda I assume, but I could be wrong.) helped us out. We ended up taking a bottle of Barbera and sat outside. We had a great spot to people watch, but then it started to rain. We didn't care. The temperature dropped about ten degrees. Our table had an umbrella so we just sat there and enjoyed it. The rain lasted about a half hour. Meanwhile, more people showed. You can bring your own food if you choose. If there is one winery worth a visit in the Julian area, Volcan Mountain is the one. We are both red drinkers and we're very impressed with the quality of their wine. So we ended up joining their wine club! I was staying somewhere that had a beautiful view with a deck. I was craving the ability to sit with a glass of wine and watch the sun set on the mountains. Following signs for a different winery I drove past Volcan and saw a nice crowd sitting at picnic tables and enjoying the wine. The atmosphere is so homey and friendly. My two boys asked if they could run between the grape vines (we had gotten in trouble in Temecula) and the kind woman behind the counter gave them the go ahead with the admonishment to watch things they may trip over. They were off like a shot. I got to try out two wines and ended up buying a bottle of both. Sauvignon Blanc and an apple wine which I had never tried before. When in Rome right? Planned a trip to Julian for MDW and this place came up as a must see - let me tell you it did not disappoint. The drive up to it was a beautiful windy road and you can see farms and other vineyards on your way up. Parking was not a problem and neither was seating (we got there around 12?) I would recommend coming early though as it was quite packed as we were leaving Mel was the lady working and she is incredible. Greeted us right away and made us feel comfortable. I told her we liked reds so she suggested a few and gave us a few FREE pours so we can decide. We ended up with the "meritage" which was their house red blend and it was delicious. We finished the whole bottle and on top of that mad mikes sausages was serving food. There was also live music and they are dog friendly !!! As I previously mentioned this was my first time here in Julian. This was also my first time here at this winery. My local family recommended we visit here since we were at the nearby Julian Cafe for lunch. It was a gloomy rainy day when we visited. Since it was raining and the place was not busy the server allowed us to enjoy our wine inside their members only tabled area, which was more comfortable than drinking our wine outside under the elements. We enjoyed a glass of white wine for $9.28 and a bottle of their Barbara 2019 dry red wine for $40. I enjoyed my red wine. My total bill was $53 excluding gratuities for the bottle and one glass of white wine. We probably would return here for more wine the next time we visit Julian. read more

Just outside the downtown area of Julian about a mile and a half is Volcan Winery. The drive is quite nice and scenic. Owned and operated by a Hart Winery Family member theres a good deal of experience here. Nice outside area with seating for enjoying the the apple grove across the street. Inside the wine bar is small so it doesn't take a lot of customers to make it feel crowded. The wine is young, we were tasting 2016...I would say it will be even better in a couple years. My favorite was the Old Vine Zinfandel.. forgive me for I have zinned! Definitely stop by and do some tasting. Volcan Winery is a worthwhile step on your visit to Julian. read more

Was here during our trip we stopped at Volcan Mountain Winery due to a recommendation of fellow travelers. My friend sampled the wine tasting for $10. Great price for 6 delicious wines. Wait, did I say 6? Mel, the lovely owner of Volcan Mountain Winery, added a 7th wine sample called Apple A La Mode which was the hands down favorite. We would have stayed longer but we had to run off to buy pies. When we told Mel she recommended her favorite bakery and also said that if they were closed to tell them "Mel sent you." This is what I love about small towns. I hope that you get a chance to journey to Julian and if you do and if you love wine then make a stop at Volcan Mountain Winery. You won't regret it. read more
