On Tuesday we went to Dumpling King. The staff were wearing "I heart Dumpling King" T-shirts. On Wednesday, I bought the shirt. That's the short version of this review. The slightly longer, less positive spin includes details such as the fact that our dumpling noodle soup once came complete with floating insects, we waited half an hour on a quiet night for take-away dumplings, and if you ask for extra soy sauce then be it on your own head. Despite all this, the dumplings are cheap and tasty. And that is why I wear the shirt with pride. I heart Dumpling King. read more

Crowning you "King on King Street" will be very difficult. I ordered the lettuce wraps first and you my friend were the King of Salt. I left needing something sugary just to offset the sodium cave beginning to form in my mouth. Unfortunately, your staff were cold and put off that I was there. Bathroom was filthy and so was the kitchen when I popped my nosey schnoz in. Totally acceptable at high peak hours-but I was the ONLY one in there at 2:45 on a Tuesday. The prices however were very good. It is $6.50 for anything on their lunch menu however, your only choice of dumpling is pork and chives. The portions were massive. I got 12 dumplings-juicy and yummy..... Boxes for takeaway. There are other dumpling spots I want to try so I'll hold off playing on your court for now. Get it? Royal Court? Dumpling King is an absolute gold mine. The cuisine is Northern Chinese, which is a change from the 'Aussiefied' Cantonese style most Australians are used to. The dumplings are to die for, including the pan fried northern style, which are filled with pork and chives. Steamed prawn dumplings are also a hit, with two juicy prawns encased in sticky glutinous goodness. The vegetable dumplings are also tasty, packed with vegies and garlic. Other highlights of the menu are the Peking duck pancakes - the only downside is that there are only six pancakes which aren't really enough for the amount of duck. Another dish with handmade pancakes is the shredded pork in Peking sauce. Dumplings are served with either soy sauce or chilli in oil. The chilli in oil is very spicy, as you would expect, but adds a great flavour to the soy sauce. Just add sparingly! Dumpling King also does hand made noodles. They are lovely and thick and irregular. The dishes that come with a sauce makes them very slippery and almost impossible to pick up. My favourite is the handmade noodles with pork mince and bean sauce. It kind of looks like spaghetti bolognaise when it comes out, and it is served with cold cucumber. The sauce is absorbed into the mince so the noodles aren't drowning and are easy to eat. As for service, English is not a strong point. There have been a few occasions where things have been lost in translation. There is an upstairs section where you go if the downstairs is full, and it is not the most pleasant place to eat. There is also the tendency to be forgotten about - out of sight out of mind. The outside area is dirty and most unpleasant; I doubt I would sit out there again. It is to be expected really, it's Newtown after all. You can BYO, which makes it a very cheap meal. The food is tasty and inexpensive, with 12 dumplings for $8.80 and the aforementioned handmade noodles with mince and bean sauce is only $10.80. Being cheap and tasty, it is therefore packed and advisable to book ahead on a Friday or Saturday night. Ask for a downstairs table unless you are planning a rowdy party and need elbow room. read more

My flatmate Em, keeps screaming at me, "you have to go to Dumpling King, you have to go to Dumpling King, they have the best dumplings ever!" So finally she wore me down and I went, they are on King Street in Newtown, and maybe Em's right, the dumplings really were excellent. Many dumpling places only serve pork and vegetable dumplings, but Dumpling King offers beef dumplings too, beef and celery to be exact. We also had the Northern Style Steamed Pork Buns, which were excellent. Among the dumpling selection, you can have dumplings in Hot & Sour Soup or Noodle Soup, I didn't try these, maybe next time as I will have to go back for more. And I cannot forget, deep fried ice cream, I cannot stay away from fried ice cream and yes they have it and it was awesome. read more

Famous for its handmade noodles, make sure to give them a try! Newtown is always buzzing with activity, making it difficult to find a park. It was a family birthday, now that's not to say that it was an anniversary of when the family became a unit or any kind of new age hippie mumbo jumbo like that, but rather, someone in the family was having a birthday and as a family we were celebrating. We were doing this celebration at Dumpling King in Newtown. A restaurant that catered to dumpling eaters almost exclusively. We took our seats upstairs in a sort of semi balcony, semi closed in room, bricked walls and a lattice window. We sat and ordered some dumplings. As fortune would have it, I was to meet some friends two doors away after dinner and have a couple of drinks, and being cheap, I decided that it would be a good idea to drink as much wine at dinner as possible, given that it was B.Y.O. and therefore an inexpensive option. The dumplings came and they were incredible, the fried and the steamed. There were so many dumplings that becoming full was a real danger. I downed another glass of wine. Conversations continued as we enjoyed our dumpling feast, the night winding down in dinner town, (another two glasses) and the inevitable goodbyes on their way. (Another glass for the road, make that two.) I left the Dumpling King with a belly full of scrumptious dumplings, saying goodbye to my family and walking confidently to Freaky Tiki's. I entered, said hello to my friends, talked swiftly about how good Dumpling King was and then it hit me. The two bottles of wine, all at once attacking my sense of good judgement and pulling down into the abysses of drunkdom. It is with a heavy heart that I must change my review. I rarely give bad reviews. I like reviewing places I like and want to share! I had previously given Dumpling King 4 stars but after last Friday's meal.... do not sit upstairs. It is damn unpleasant. It is hot, poorly lit, smells and is so so noisy. Not the ambient noise mixed in with loud music. Loud echoing talking, or more accurately yelling, of people trying to be heard. Also, check your chilli oil pots folks, especially if they are uncovered. Which, upstairs they all are. We found a gigantic dead cockroach in ours. It still makes my stomach churn. With barely an apology, we had everything replaced on our table. We should have left, but our dumplings were about to come out. Honestly the food still remains tasty. Some really lovely dumplings. But, the bamboo steamers look really old like, continuously not dried properly moldy, old. I think they really need to lift their game. A very dissapointing experience and I don't think ill ever go back. Currently on the lookout for a new dumpling place in newtown. read more

I do hate to whinge but I am wondering why this place is called 'Dumpling King' when there is so little variety of dumplings? I've had lots of buddies rave about this place and I had a hankering so I ventured forth. As stated - not too many options if you're craving a delightful dumpling. I ordered a serve of the steamed vegetarian ones and the shallot pancake. The pancake should have been called a pizza. It was as huge as it was delicious! The dumplings however were quite a let down - they had the reheated from frozen taste about them and were not very flavoursome. My friend had some of the noodles and from my small taste they were delicious. I'd definitely go back for the homemade fresh noodles but not the dumplings. read more

Claiming to be the King of Dumplings is something you would want to back up in order to avoid needing to rename your restaurant. Dumpling King should do this. I've had tastier dumplings at marrickville markets, cheaper, and I get them within an hour. I usually gives places a chance ( who knows what staffing issues they're having on any given night), but after 3 times and each being disappointing, I can't go back. Positives: things are tasty, but I've had tastier Negatives: few staff; waiting long times for table service and food; staff seem to not be treated well- never seen anyone smile. read more

We went here a few weeks ago and I'm still upset from the experience. We went with a group of 5 my husband and I ordered vegetable dumplings, as we don't eat meat, he had the steamed I got the fried. The waitress brought out the plate of what we thought she said were fried vegetable dumplings and put them in front of my husband, so I assumed they were mine. My husband ate one and I took a bite out of one and thought it tasted strange, I looked at it and it didn't look like a vegetable filling. So my husband went up to ask the waitress if it was meat. She then pulled out her note pad and said that we ordered meat dumplings (which the other people at our table did) she was very rude and dismissive. I will never go here again. read more

Came in with lots of hope and good recommendations from friends. Unfortunately, we had very poor quality dumplings :( meat too dry, dough too thick and very unevenly cooked, soup inside completely dried up in half of them,and took 25 minutes to get them with only 8 other people in the place. Quality seems to have degraded :( I remember eating here a few times and the quality was decent for the price. Now it seems the quality is poor (at dinner time). Ordered prawn dumplings and after 15 minutes of wondering asked about them and they told me they take 25 minutes?? Sure enough when they came out they look liked they had been nuked, tasted like rubber. I took these back and got the order cancelled. I asked about the cooking time and they said thats just how they are. Even though it only takes ~10mins to steam a dumpling from frozen. I feel let down and wont be risking coming back. read more
